Thank you for doing this story. Lynyrd Skynyrd is the greatest band of all time! My parents knew some of the members. Cassie was my mom's best friend. They grew up together. She was at my parents wedding. The Gaines'parents are the witnesses on my parents' wedding license and were very good friends with my grandparents. As a child, I remember my mom talking on the phone with Cassie. When they were going to be in a concert close by she would call and let my parents know. I'll never forget that tragic day. It was the first time I ever saw my parents cry. Their Street Survivors album cover was changed after the plane crash. They removed the flames from the cover. The original is hard to find and more valuable
There's something pretty cool and meaningful of having the original dock still existing below the new one...... it's as out of reach as the original band is to us now, but always there to remind us that such a fantastic and amazing band once existed, and will be remember by countless people... they became legends, and legends never die.
Dang, that was pretty cool y'all. Simple man is my absolute favorite song of all time. Not just a good song but good advice. Be safe amongst the madness.

I love watching your content . I learn so much about the people, the places they are associated with and I get to see them from my little village here in England (which has some of its own interesting history ) thanks to you.
I grew up along way from Jacksonville, way up in Washington state. You could say Skynyrd was a huge influence on my life in the 70's. Thanks for the tour.
Some say that the "Gimme Three Steps" story took place at a different place called "The Little Brown Jug", which was located at 2517 Edison Avenue. The Jug Saloon is 2 miles away at 5301 Lennox Ave & was originally called The Pastime Bar -- The owner recently renamed it in commemoration of Skynyrd, & some of the band members definitely hung out there back in the day as well, but there is debate over where the situation happened that inspired the song. I would guess that every bar owner in Jacksonville claims that Skynyrd & .38 Special members hung out there & that their place inspired some song.....
That, i assure you, is NOT where Van Zandt is buried. A few years back, people vandalized the actual grave and tried to dig RVZ up. So, the family relocated Ronnie, Cassie Gaines & Steve Gaines bodies. Then moved the headstones towards the entrance of the cemetery. But Ronnie is buried in an undisclosed location.
Thank you so much for this video. Everyone from the area has a Skynyrd Story. My dad was one of the last people that saw Leon alive. Thank you for the respect and the great history of are area. Stay Spooky my friends
Leon Wilkesons sister Mary was my friend. Leon wasn't in LS then but when I was at their house he was always praticsing his bass. He and Billy went to Forrest High.

On the 25th anniversary i traveled from Canada to the Memorial on Blanding Boulavard...spent the day with Ronnie Steve and Cassy...a Musical Hilight in my life
A few years ago Ed King was conversing with someone through comments that took a video of where hell house used to be.. I got the sense that he really wanted to go back to visit it or where it used to be from reading his comments to the guy that uploaded the video. I don't think he got the chance to do that before he passed away and I wish he had..
George I have to wonder what kind of hospitality Ed got , everyone was so young and he was probably a loner, but I loved Ed King he was a key to the direction or the music , I wish Ed was still with us , and I wish Steve Gaines and Cassie would have had a longer life , and I would have NOT wanted to fight Ronnie Van Zant I think Ronnie probably treated Ed kindly up until that show when he broke the whiskey bottle, I think Ronnie was a whiskey rock n roller
@@ljbull33 I also wonder the same thing about the hospitality Ed received.. When someone's from another town they are always an outsider to a certain degree & with Ed being from California.. I just hope he was treated fair because Ed was a good man and you'll never hear a song with a more recognizable opening guitar chord progression than Sweet Home Alabama and we have Ed King to thank for that.. The music wouldn't be special without the lyrics but the lyrics also wouldn't be special without the music either.. I heard Ed say in an interview that Ronnie got his guitar tech in trouble the night before ( drinking, fighting or both ) and the both of them were put in jail ( Ronnie & Ed's guitar tech ) By the time they were released from jail & made it to the concert Ed's guitar tech didn't have time to make sure Ed's guitar was in perfect working order and in the middle of a song Ed broke a string & that's what sent Ronnie flying off the deep end after the show & he didn't understand why Ronnie was so mad at him when Ronnie was the reason his guitar tech wasn't there to inspect & replace strings/parts for his guitar.. I think it really bothered Ed that Ronnie dropped the hammer on him for something that was to no fault of his own ( Ed's ) On a side note Ed King & Steve Gaines were both born September 14th 1949... That's one of those things that makes you wonder... Thanks for the reply and take care... George
Lynyrd Skynyrd's Roots are in Jacksonville For Elvis fans, there’s Graceland. For Beatles fans, there’s the Cavern Club. If you are a fan of Lynyrd Skynyrd, there is only one preeminent spot that truly speaks to their roots. That place is affectionately known at “Hell House”, and is located near Green Cove Springs, just outside Jacksonville. Like many locations that disappear over time, “Hell House” is long gone, destroyed by fire many years ago. The once-rural land on Peter’s Creek is giving way to the never-ending quest for real estate, and will soon have a new family making their own history on a spot viewed as Mecca for the legion of Skynryd fans. I visited it recently, before it all is gone, hidden from view in another gated community. "Hell House" is gone, but its foundations can still be seen in the ground. And the dock that Ronnie and the boys fished off between practice sets, is still present. If you are a true Skynyrd fan, you will hopefully enjoy this few minutes of nostalgia. As I walked the hallowed ground, I could hear strains of "Gimme Three Steps", "Free Bird", "Saturday Night Special", and so many more. I could feel the scorching heat that must have been barely tolerable in this tin-roofed shack full of high watt amplifiers blasting their songs for the raccoons, deer, egrets, and occasional gator that passed by. Oh, to have been one of those lucky critters! ~Wailer VIDEO: facebook.com/wailer.mon/videos/10209256865755822/
Thanks for the video. It made me feel like you are a kind buddy, personally showing me all these places and the history behind Skynyrd . Nice job and thanks for keeping it humble and low key and not all Hollywood.
Amazing video, Skynyrds music will live on forever. In todays manufactured music industry stories of a group of lads getting together in the backwoods writing platinum albums is a thing of the past. BTW my father was at the hell house back in the day he grew up way down in Clearwater but found his way up for work and became friends with Gene. Although he never "worked" for the band he was part of the circle for a while. I feel we grew up in the wrong era.
It might have been pointed out already but in case it hasn’t, the picture used in the video for Cassie Gaines is actually of Leslie Hawkins. Leslie was a survivor of the plane crash.
Dude i just went 2 weeks ago to the swamps of Mississippi and paid my dues at the crash site. I got lots of pictures only thing they were taken at night. Thats just the way it worked out but the columbs that are up are 8' tall and have scupters of Ronnie, Steve and Cassie. I could feel there spirit in that humid air that night.

Think Ronnie's house was on the empty lot at the end of Mc Vickers Rd. n Brickyard. In Johnny's Brickyard music video they used the neighborhoods dock to the left. This possibly may be the address 267 Brickyard Rd.

Great video that highlighted some great Skynyrd locations. Thanks for sharing. Unfortunately when discussing Cassie Gaines the photo shown was not Cassie. It in fact is another member of the "Honkettes", Leslie Hawkins who is pictured alongside Dean Kilpatrick in the photo. Sadly Dean was also tragically killed in the plane crash. Also as stated in the comments Allen Collins is buried alongside his wife in a plot across the street from Ronnie and Leon.
So interesting regarding Mr Skinner!.So cool, yet so sad!. It always makes me think of music that was never to be written because of these tragedies!.Be safe guys!.
The talk about going to a cemetery without a map reminds me of when I finally revisited my grandparents graves roughly twenty years after they were buried (and the last time I visited). It was on a whim and I was going by fuzzy memories of rough location. It took me about a half-hour to find it. The cemetery had changed so much during that time. Of course, I went on a cloudy drizzly day. I was the only person out there. I can't imagine how long it would take to find a grave of someone you know is in there but no real idea where exactly they are.
I’m a long time Skynyrd fan, GREAT video, thanks so much. I bought Johnny’s cd “Brickyard Road” when it first came out in 1989. The whole album is great! Every time I listened to the song”Brickyard Road”, I would always get misty eyed. “I can see him, standin’ on the dock, his old Chevy out in the front yard…”
Thank you for the beautiful video tribute to Rozz. ⚘️⭐️My friend and I used to go see Christian Death starting in 1990 when we were in high school. He opened up an entirely new, gorgeously sad realm of music and thought, that I'm grateful I got to experience live. I call it "Beautiful Sadness". A term I came up with to describe torture of the heart, expressed in a way that is so full of light at the same time, that it can still make you feel joyous. Your lovely wife said it perfectly and in truth; many great artists truly are tortured souls. We think about the greats that died 'too' young. My humble theory is that their intensity, luminosity, candor, vigor and passion can only be expressed for a certain amount of time before it just gets to be too much for them energetically. 🖤💜🖤 I subscribed and am looking forward to seeing more of your videos. I loved it...A perfectly articulated narrative, awesome video, and a passion for what you both do. Looking forward to seeing more. Thank you. 💜💜💜

Thank you for showing our bench & plaque memorial for Jimmie,it is being repaired at the moment & will be back at Whiteys next April in 2022. There is also a concrete bench that his sister Jane had made and we dedicated at Riverside also.
Good job and well done. I have been a Lynyrd Skynyrd fan my whole life I'm 60.
The crash happened the summer I graduated high school.
This was tastily done Ronnie would like it. Thanks again, Peace.
Hi guys, just want to say, this is one of the best video of honoring a group people that moved the world. And to include everyone, just a wonderful dedication.
Incredible band and a terrible fluke of fate, all I can say is thanks for all the incredible music as I keep blowing down this road of life, to one day to hear again that which was and was taken far too soon-Rock In Peace Y'all!
Of course where it really began in earnest was MUSCLE SHOALS ALABAMA!
This channel is the “GO TO” Channel if you are looking for the deepest of the deep info on ANY subject they cover and I wouldn’t change a thing. Thank you!
Thank you Mary
@@grimmlifecollective Ronnie was moved again in 2022 by his wife Judy
This was my dad's favorite band. He wanted to take a trip down to Florida and look at the graves. This brings back memories. Thank you for this
Gm
As a musician like my self I love playing their songs.
I grew up in Florida and videos like this make me homesick. It's a crazy place but it has a vibe that makes me feel so nostalgic.
No doubt.
Glad I found this one! I was thinking the other day that It would be cool to do a video in your style of the tragedy of Lynyrd Skynyrd 🤙🏻🤘🏻.
Very nice job! Been a die hard Skynyrd fan for years. God Bless the Lynyrd Skynyrd Band. Their music will live forever.
There's something pretty cool and meaningful of having the original dock still existing below the new one...... it's as out of reach as the original band is to us now, but always there to remind us that such a fantastic and amazing band once existed, and will be remember by countless people... they became legends, and legends never die.
This is so cool I live in Orange Park. Ronnie is so missed in the music world. The songs he wrote were just about home us life in Jacksonville...
Dang, that was pretty cool y'all. Simple man is my absolute favorite song of all time. Not just a good song but good advice. Be safe amongst the madness.
I don't think there is a song I don't like from them !!! NEVER BE another one like them !!! That I'll take to bank !!!
Simple Man is a song to live by
My fave too.
Just wanted to say thanks for the time and effort to document the history of a band that means so much me personally.
Their music is so classic still to this day, my favorite song of theirs is That Smell
My fave too!
Would have loved to see the Oak tree on Mandarin Road where Gary Rossington crashed his Torino, made famous by the song "That Smell".
Allen Collins you are not forgotten.
Went and seen there Graves at riverside right after Gary passed, he hasn't been put to rest as of writing but I plan on going back when he is. God bless and ty for the video. I've been to all these spots because of your video but also Allen Collins is buried in the smaller one across the street next to a big white angel statue
Wow !! So appreciate you covering so much of Lynyrd Skynyrd 🖤🦇🖤Thank you so much , I LOVE them !!!! Rock N Roll 🖤🦇🖤🦇🖤🦇🖤🦇🖤Happy Halloween
I don't know how or why I fell down the Skynyrd rabbit hole but I did. I'm late AF but their music was epic. So bluesy. I love it.

Thank you for taking time to shoot and edit. Great tour for all Southern Rock Fans.
The Ballad of Curtis Loew is one of my favorite songs
That, i assure you, is NOT where Van Zandt is buried. A few years back, people vandalized the actual grave and tried to dig RVZ up. So, the family relocated Ronnie, Cassie Gaines & Steve Gaines bodies. Then moved the headstones towards the entrance of the cemetery. But Ronnie is buried in an undisclosed location.
Why don’t you think he’s buried there?...where is it at then?
@@dsquare8029 can you read. He literally said because people vandalized their graves and tried to dig them up
He was put in the family plot, underground with several yards of concrete on top of his vault.

MAN, DID I ENJOY THIS. I'M A 69 YEAR OLD WOMAN THAT WAS VERY MUCH INTO THEIR MUSIC. THANKS....YOU DID A GREAT JOB.
Thank you so much for this video. Everyone from the area has a Skynyrd Story. My dad was one of the last people that saw Leon alive. Thank you for the respect and the great history of are area. Stay Spooky my friends
Leon Wilkeson son is my boss. He’s got some cool stories of his pops.
wow, killer!!
oh I bet he does! 👍 God rest his soul🙏❤️

Leon was cool as hell. I met him a few times.
Ya ya ya right and Ronnie's daughter is my wife! If u had a picture someone would believe u!
Leon Wilkesons sister Mary was my friend. Leon wasn't in LS then but when I was at their house he was always praticsing his bass. He and Billy went to Forrest High.
Allan went to the same school didn't he?
Allen went to Forest. Ronnie Larry and Gary went to Lee. Billy Bishop Kenney
The same Forrest High that in now Jeb Stuart middle school?
@@itzamia Nathan B. Forrest HS is now known as Westside High School.
@@googleusergp It's been a long time since I went to Jeb Stuart. I remember seeing things from Forrest High School there. It was probably books donated to the middle school library with the old Forrest H.S. stamp on it so us students assumed it used to be called Forrest High School. Learn something new after all these years. Thanks.
George
Lynyrd Skynyrd's Roots are in Jacksonville
For Elvis fans, there’s Graceland.
By far the best video explaining the origins with visual, GREAT JOB!
I have some family there in Jacksonville, Florida. Next time I go visit them I will pay my respect to my all-time favorite Southern Rockers!!
Actualy, the term would be "whiskey rock n roller "thats what i am!
Spent much time in Gainsville at the University of Florida in the early 70's, we saw Lynard Skynard many times in concert. What a blast from the past, ty for taking me along, my friends father, Hollis Holbrook developed the art depth at U of F and we always got the best seats, ty Hollis
One of the best bands to ever exist.
I just discovered your channel a few weeks ago and I love it. You both have so much enthusiasm when making your videos. I'm glad I subscribed to your channel.
Awesome video brother. Thanks for taking the time not only for yourself but for us also
I heard it told nothing was taken from Ronnie's casket because they only wanted to see if he was buried in a Neil Young TShirt as was rumored.
I saw them in San Diego, the original group before the tragic death of my favorite rockers:
LYNYRD SKYNYRD!!!!
I WILL NEVER FORGET THEM

THANKS FOR THE INFO BRO!!
This video is completely FANTASTIC! Thank you so much 🙏 I will now go and subscribe! Rest In Peace to Ronnie and all the rest..Thank you for a lifetime of music..

I’m in love with the music you chose for this video. The slide guitar is so beautiful!
being a Skynyrd fan who saw the band 3 times in the 70"s...thank you for this vid
Lucky you !!!
All these great southern rock bands have left some awesome music to cherish an future generations to enjoy also
Think Ronnie's house was on the empty lot at the end of Mc Vickers Rd. n Brickyard. In Johnny's Brickyard music video they used the neighborhoods dock to the left. This possibly may be the address 267 Brickyard Rd.
Awesome, Thank you guys very much for making this video, a lot of this stuff I never really knew about them.

Impressed that you kids like Skynyrd. Good job! Great to see those landmarks are still there
Great video that highlighted some great Skynyrd locations.
Ahh, I love the story of The Jug Saloon. Really cool video, guys.. Thank you so much!
Love that they went to "Robert E. Lee High School"! True Southerners & great musicians.
Thank you. 💜💜💜
When naming the "Greatest Southern Rock Band" you seem to have forgotten The Allman Brothers Band. Formed the same time in the same city, Jacksonville, Fl. I'd have to say Skynryd and the Brothers would be co-greatest bands.
yeah but even before them was Black Oak Arkansas.
There is one coming up now! Bret Allen and the Northern Rebels! Check them out!
Perfectly said. Couldn't agree more.
How about ZZTop
@@Jim-op3kg You're absolutely right. I'm 68 and was there when 'that little 'ol band from Texas' took off. I'm shamed that I forgot them. Thanks, Jim.

Beautiful place where the dock is ❤, wish it was my backyard,
Leonard Skinner had taken it well that the band was named after him. He was a good sport. I thought there should have been a tribute on his memorial.
think how much it changed the world that his parents named him a first name that almost rhymed with his funny last name...
