I never thought that I had the potential to give away all of my money and sell my home to go join a cult, but thinking of a craft commune with little hobbit houses has me 100% on board. IM COMING EDYTHE! (Because that’s how commune Edythe would spell her name)

My friends suggested a swimming commune but they’re not crafters so which do I join?!

Love your cross stitching. When I started cross stitching I didn't think it would be so rewarding but here I am stitching a variety of different patterns from fancy lady to fullcoverage. At the moment I switch between spinning and cross stitching with some crochet and sewing sprinkled in between.

The zig zag border on a quilt is call Prairie Points. It looks great but can be a bit of a challenge to make it fit along each edge. I've done it twice and that was enough for me, lol.

I so enjoy your podcasts - thank you so much. Your apple conversations make me long for the midwest of my childhood. I would love to join your crafty commune with hobbit holes - sounds delightful! And it's a coracle - Reepicheep the mouse sailed off in his little coracle at the end of the Narnia books. Thanks for a fun episode!

Amy Beth, you make me laugh out loud because I can soooo relate to what you're expressing. I find that because I consider myself a maker that I need to make all the things. I have to remind myself that I do not have the energy/time/space/budget, etc to do that. I also have many projects in waiting. Keeping a brief list of them and what is needed to do/complete them helps, but even watching your episode makes me think, I need to try ice dying and EPP (that bowl!!) and so on. All of your projects look fantastic.❤❤❤

Totally agree! I also have to sometimes skip sections of crafting podcasts that discuss a craft I don't do but have the vaguest of curiosity in (like spinning yarn) because I know my mind will stir and stew on it until I give in and I don't have space for that in my life in any way.
I also have the wild impulse that if I do the thing, I better buy the quality, expensive materials so I can have a good experience and not have to 'inevitably' buy them later and waste money. 🙄😆 But more often than not, those hobbies fall by the wayside and I come back to crochet and knit. My friend helped me be more rational about it and said to invest in beginner items to start and if I end up liking it, then spend the big bucks to get good quality materials. Who knew it could work like that? 😄
On the other hand, a crafting commune sounds amazing and would solve all the problems? 😂😍

I so identify with the hyperfixation! For me, after the rush of planning and gathering, it's almost like i've done the project. I look at my fabric and yarn stashes and know exactly what I was going use them for. Happy to join you in your coracle!

OH HEY FELLOW "CREATIVITY IS REALLY AN EXORCISM" HUMAN! Since you asked, I have tips! I find that sometimes when I'm in "I need to make this right this second," it's really more about being afraid of forgetting my idea. I keep an ongoing Word Document with pattern links, fabric/yarn colors and sources, and schemes, and often just having a written plan will scratch the itch and I can come back to it later. If it doesn't, I'll just GO WITH IT. I've found it's way more detrimental to beat myself up for needing to go on a little side trip than actually just doing it. I've also been working on not ordering additional supplies and patterns until I'm all ready to go on the plan-- this is a bit of a balancing act because I DO love a robust stash and being able to strike while the creative iron's hot.

I am so with you on having an idea of what you will make with something before or as it goes into stash. But I see so much beauty and then get ideas of what I'll make with it, buy it, and keep doing this cycle. Sadly I realize I am still buying way faster than I am making and using my stash. I am really trying hard, but it's almost like I have to get off social media, and I don't want to do that because I WANT to be inspired and get excited about making all the things! I say let the kids worry about getting rid of our stash after we are gone. Imma gonna leave names and contact info in my will of all my crafty friends, so the kids know who to give to first. 😂😂😂

Thank you for articulating the issue?/gift? of needing to outfit for crafting multiple interesting things. I have both your "problem" and a need to have ALL the best hiking/camping gear for me (even if I'm too old to use some of it...) Humaning is rough somedays but the days where an overnight frost has loosed the beautiful coloured leaves from the trees so that they look like psychedelic snow make up for the roughness. Sometimes...

Totally get the whirlpool analogy. And my stash has been stressing me a bit, so some is being given away and I bought an Ikea kallax to reorganize it. Now that I can see it, old stash is giving me more joy and inspiration. I also have a journal to get the ideas that snag me written down and out of my head and I force myself to let it simmer and try to use stash to do it. But I do like seeing sweaters on different body sizes so I can get a better feel for if I'd actually like it on me. I'm going to need more knit worthy people in my life to use up my stash!

The Quilt Museum has a huge collection but is not able to display it all. You can always ask for a special appt. If there is a particular quilt you would like to see. They are very fragile and are rarely displayed on the walls any more.

What your talking about is a compulsion and I have them often with crafting (and other areas of my life). I find sketching out what I have in my head and planning out color a color scheme is helpful as a halfway step to easing things out of my system without reaching the buying stage every time. It doesn’t work 100% for me, but it helps.

Hello, my name is Vasco, I’ve watched your podcast for a fair few years, I tend not to comment as I always feel rather awkward and that my opinion would not really matter. First and foremost, you are a fantastic human being, thank you for your sharing, and for being fab. What I wanted to say is that I have never fitted anywhere, not even in the knitting world, but perhaps I would in your crafting commune. Can I came and be your neighbour, so we can craft and chat? I totally get your cycle thing, for years I tried not to get a sock knitting machine, but recently I caved in….. along with so many crafting things, I just wish I could craft all day long. Happy knitting, spinning, crafting! 🧦 🧶

I don’t have any tips for escaping a hyperfixation on making something without buying stuff, but I do have some some solidarity for you! Honestly, just discovering my neurodivergence a few years ago and learning what it means to have an “interest-based” nervous system has given me permission to just scratch those itches when they come along because it gives me the kind of joy that more than makes up for the dents in my budget. 🤷

Don’t you think the gathering of supplies and materials in preparation for a project that you may or may not embark on (and possibly have to spend money on in a retrospectively wasteful way) is creative and fun? It lets your mind work on color, texture, materials, developing a vision, etc. , etc. I think it’s good for the creative juices!

Okay but what about when you're about to start a project and Edith has your damn US4 knitting needles because she decided to try knitting and 35 rows into her project, she set it aside to return to her woodworking...... I see many flaws as the knitter in this craft commune..... Already I am using needles that I need and just KNEW I had that one yarn... oh wait I turned it into that hat that I gifted. Dangit. So I guess I would have to have a secret stash with all my best knitting things the rest of the community doesn't know about. But then, I question if Edith is keeping her best whittling tools hidden too?? What is everyone else hiding???? And suddenly this community is just everyone looking at one another in suspicious sideways glances. That's it I'm moving back home.
