Doubt & Despair with Tinnitus

  • Doubt and despair are major blocks to getting better with tinnitus. A part of us refuses to accept that there is a way forward and will sabotage any attempt to let go and release symptoms. There is only one path. That is to move towards your suffering and make friends with it, unpack it, digest it, process it and let go. The more you let go of your resistance and work through your stuff, the more your tinnitus will back off. This symptom is dependent on resistance, impatience, struggle, stress, fear, anxiety etc to keep going. A solid body-based practice will cut through this resistance more and more.

Your videos have been so helpful for me. I've had tinnitus 1 year today, and im almost fully recovered.
Folks listening, the one thing thar helped me drastically, i noticed a difference within 5 days was cutting out all starchy carbs.
I went on a meat and vegetable diet pretty much keto, so no potatoes or anything like that.
Also, in combination, i practised mindfulness and meditation to slow my racing mind down, which is what i believe caused my tunnitus.
Full body and mind stress paired with a terrible diet sounded the alarm bells in my head.
You can and will get better, but you need to take this seriously and understand that it's not going to dissapear over night so stay consistent.
My best friend had tinnitus he was a DJ, and the music every night damaged his ears. He's completely tinnitus free now. You are not stuck with tinnitus. You just rarley hear the success stories because they dont post about it online.
To anybody struggling right now im sending you lots of healing, love, and energy. I know the pain and disspear you're feeling BUT you will get better regardless of how long you have had tinnitus! Today is the day you make a change and fight back but not with fear ❤

Hi bro, quick question. When you said that you almost recovered and your dj friend is free of T, do u mean that you successfully habituated or the T is physically gone? I just got it 10 days ago and it confused me if the T can really gone or i have to learn how to habituate

I never comment on youtube, but I just started watching your video and I can already see immediate improvement. I got tinnitus one month ago. It is probably from a mixture of loud noise, stress and fluid in my middle ear. Yesterday I saw an ENT who was pretty blunt, and i was essentially left with "it might be permanent, get used to it, goodbye". My tinnitus had already started to subside at that point, i was on the path of being habituated (after just 1 month, i was proud!), and that visit sent me into a spiral. The tinnitus instantly came back EXTREMELY strong, it even reappeared in an ear where it was essentially gone. I started reading bad stories again and i became distressed again. Tonight, i started watching your videos, and already I can feel some improvement. I am far from being at ease with this condition, after all, I'm still listening to it. But even listening to it i can hear improvement. I will watch the rest of the playlist now, thank you for spreading much needing positivity in times of need

Hi Julian, a few days ago despair , now hope, I developed Tinnitus seven weeks ago, I knew what to expect as my father had it for 40 years. It is the most challenging thing I have ever faced. However, when I was really in a very dark place I came across a video posted by a dear lady in Scotland who has accepted and let go and is now "ok" with the tinnitus, her story is just so down to Earth and honest, truly uplifting, straight from her heart with an obvious desire to help fellow sufferers. This Lady's story brought me back. She mentioned you. Even knowing that just one person has a life again is just so wonderful I now know and accept that Tinnitus is part of me, I can't fight it or control it so it will submit to my desire for silence but I can at least work towards accepting and letting go. I know there will be ups and downs but for now its hope that dominates and it must continue to be that way. I don't know how 'bad' my Tinnitus is compared with yours but what I know is that it's hard not to focus on it and that only makes it worse. Keep positive, if you have faith, use it for good

Tinnitus to some extent is common to many people, as I said I have always had it since childhood but it was health anxiety that made me pay more attention to it. Sometimes I dont know if my tinnitis gets louder or if I am just noticing it when I am stressed and anxious. I get very hyper aware of body sensations when I am anxious or when I feel panicky. When I get too anxious I become frightened over things that I would normally ignore. I not only notice sounds in my ears but I also will feel like my hearing is a little muted ( a little clogged). At times I am able to not feel fear about my T and then other times I feel scared to death from it. I find it hard to not feel hopeless at times because I never know how I am going to react to T.

I have this clogged feeling a lot in my ear, too. Sometimes you get to read about 'tensor tympani syndrom' in that context, which describes a state of constant involuntary contractions of a muscle in the middle ear which usually blocks in order to protect the ear from louder sounds (kind of like a pupil reacts to light). As far as I know it's not scientifically proven (so no guarantee here) but it seems plausible to me that the more tense you are and the more afraid of sound you become the tighter the muscle becomes.

Julian, I have T since 2012, I thought I learned how to deal with it but almost once month ago I got scared about a health issue and also my beloved dog of 13 years died.I felt there that my T came back stronger than ever,I am afraid that this spike will stay forever and ruin my life. I used to be a musician but since T i stoped composing music, I still active teaching music but these days I am feeling desperation with this issue.

    • @JulianCowanHill
      @JulianCowanHill  8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Dear Alicia, it is so sad when a dog passes away. It can be overwhelming. This combined with fear is more than enough to activate tinnitus but this is NOT permanent. Please go and see a craniosacral therapist once a week for a couple of months and get help in processing your grief and helping your nervous system settle. Once you start feeling calmer and more settled the tinnitus will start to feel more manageable and back off. I also really encourage you to get back into composing again. This could be one of the best things you do to combat tinnitus. Think about it, you are going to use your musical imagination and experimentation at the piano or whatever you use to focus on something positive, creative and worthwhile. If you do something you love this will help you focus your attention off the tinnitus. What better masker could there be for you? Watch my focussing videos to help you get on track. th-cam.com/channels/P0pfmXnI8hMnXP52Eg2pEg.html
use them to get out of your head and back in touch with the body. This helps take the attention of tinnitus and reduce the hypersensitive hearing which leads to tinnitus. Good luck with it all. Love your music and love your abilities. This is bound to help you. Best wishes Julian

I started having Tinnitus after spending 20+ mins in a car with really loud music back in 2018. I've had it for couple of years but recently it got better to the point I never noticed it. There was no Tinnitus or even thought of it.
I am not sure if it was habituation or it just got fixed. But again after so many years I was exposed to loud noise at a concert and forgot to take my ear plugs. I only spent 10 - 15 mins there was bac k in the stage but now Tinnitus is back.

Guys, I just want to share with you my results with the keto diet.
I went on keto when I was at my wits end and ready to jump off a bridge. For 4 months my tinnitus was unbearable, however I knew something was going on inside my body for the ringing in my ears to be so bad. I read a lot about keto helping tinnitus, so I figured I had nothing to lose. SINCE BEGINNING A KETO LIFESTYLE, MY LOFE HAS CHANGED SO DRAMATICALLY ITS AS IF THE ANGELS HABE GRANTED ME A GIFT. I’m not exaggerating. The ringing has gone from a 10 to a 4. Obviously I was most likely pre diabetic when I started- but what do you have to lose except some of your tinnitus volume? TRY KETO you guys!!!!
If you need an app to keep you on track with keto, try life sum. Wishing you all quieter days ahead!

I understand where you are coming from. But resisting it, pretending it is not there and fighting it can prolong the misery. Putting your attention into relaxing the body is a good strategy because you let the T be and at the same time bring down the irritability and settle the nervous system. This helps it back off which enables you to make friends with it more and more.

When I go out with my friends and have a few wines the T seems to go, and I mean completely. So it can come and go and come and within the space of one evening. The next day it's back. Your central nervous system is constantly adjusting itself according to how safe you feel. If you develop a strong, clear, central focus then the volatility calms down and the hypersensitivity settles back towards normal. Please practice the boatmast meditation and the yawning and face massage in the First Things First section of my app www.quietenapp.com and learn calming and distracting yoga or tai chi, and also find a good body-based therapist to help your nervous system settle back into well-being mode (out of freeze or fight or flight) and it is very likely you will get much much better. If you need a personal session to talk this through in detail please contact me on info@juliancowanhill.co.uk

Tension and stress cause the jaw to clench and cause tinnitus to keep going. Letting go of physical tension or nervous tension helps tinnitus back off. Stress is probably the cause for both the jaw clenching and the tinnitus.
