    I'm having a spike after like 4 years of being stable! I woke up and was like oh look who's returned after so many years. The key to habitation is having no stress response to the noise. You will automatically stop noticing it eventually and it will simply become background noise.

      I agree with you. I also find it incredibly helpful to have Craniosacral Therapy or a calming hands-on, body-based therapy to help drop you down into stillness again. Also if my T comes back I will do a good half an hour to an hour of yoga tai chi practice every day.

    Julian, thank you so much for your amazing content. I have tinnitus for about 1 year now, was doing pretty well for last few months (most of the time didn’t notice / soft level). Having a pretty bad spike right now. The first 2 months I had it, I thought my life was over (think most of us do). Then I found your video’s, and it was the first time anyone told that ‘it will get better’. I swear that was a major milestone for me and it went slightly down then and there and continued to do after that. You were the first one (after all negative messages online and the classic ‘learn to live with it’ from doctor) to say this. I think tinnitus is badly misunderstood by the average medical practitioner. Just hearing your voice is soothing to me. Bless you mate, you’re a legend. Keep doing what you’re doing, you’re making a big difference in this world 🙏🏻

    I am new to this. I take it the aim is to get the parasympathetic nervous system up and running and to become the natural default over the flight or fight adrenal response, which, ironically, high pitched noise in the head induces. So the challenge, is to bit by bit retrain the nervous system to calm down.

    Thank you. I'm there now. My spike is lasting months, though of course not daily for months, and not terrible all the time. Much of the time when I am busy and even happy (?!) the tinnitus vanishes. But I guess I call this a months-long spike because it's been a gigantic pain for months, not really going down much at all. Today it's been really, really annoying. It doesn't scare me as much as it makes me sad, and discouraged.
    I am a bit of a "veteran" to tinnitus now, it going on close to four years, so I know the obvious triggers. My sleep has been total crap for months, I am VERY deeply unhappy about where I am living, and not near family or closest friends for months, so the tinnitus has been "spiked" and worse. It is no mystery at all why it should be in the forefront.
    When I am stressed to any degree, the tinnitus ramps up. When I am not stressed (which is rare these days), it backs off, even vanishes altogether, for hours, or even days. So the GOAL is to get happy, or happier, and to go where I want to go, be with the people I want to be. It is a finances issue though, and I have pets, and relocating is difficult without more help. So - working on that, absolutely. But while I am still in it, it is quite annoying, and even distressing at times.
    I decided to purchase one of those sound masking machines, which I have never before tried. It is about $30-$35 US dollars, on Amazon or Ebay. I was sometimes using TH-cam vids for sleep, and they were nice too, but limited. The sound machine might be just what I need to get more and better sleep.
    I am essentially chronically sleep deprived.
    This is not good self-care for a person with tinnitus. Getting sufficient sleep is ESSENTIAL for reducing or eliminating tinnitus. Thank you again, Julian, Your videos are a most welcome and encouraging balm for such times.

    Julian, thank you so much for all your useful videos an kind words of wisdom. I've been suffering with tinnitus for the last 3 months or so now an have gone through all the relms of emotions that comes with it sadly. I've started having massages an am in contact with a carnsaical therapist in my area with the hope of starting body based therapy with her along with joining a yoga class too. However on her first email to me she said that if stress effects my tinnitus which of course it does, ( that as well as noise induced tinnitus is the reason l have it, as I've been under a hugh amount of anxiety an stress for some considerable time now ) then yes carniosacral therapy would be helpful BUT also which is the reason I'm asking for your help an advice on. Is that in her experience when someone is relaxed as l am now after my massage today, this can make the tinnitus worse because other distractions have been removed? an yes after a good day today this evening l am struggling again. So I'm in two minds as what is helpful or not? l would be grateful for your advice on this as to whether you think this is the case when being relaxed ?

    Thank you Julian, I found this video to be of great comfort....The thing I find most frustrating about having tinnitus is no matter how cautious you try to be(you cant always wear ear plugs 24/7) your so vulnerable to your surrounding environment especially if you live in a loud-noisy city where there are a limitless number of ways to have your tinnitus unexpectedly spiked. When this happens from time to time as it recently just happen to me the other day, you sometimes feel enormously jinxed by the 'unlucky timing' of these events, cursing to yourself, feeling intensely angry thinking 'what are the freaking odds of this exceptionally loud noise occurring right at the very moment that I just happen to be there!?'

      Chris Cross Just do not listen to negative stories, even from the doctors. There are many way to relieve this. I am from Hong Kong and have tried different ways. I have watched Julian’s videos so many times at the beginning that he will give you comfort. Recently, I tried Chinese medicine and acupuncture, and it really reduce the spike level even if it occurs. Of course, I have to protect (but not over protect) my ears in really noisy environment, with ear plugs or headphones. Habituation is the key to recover from tinnitus, that is, actually your brain and nervous system will recover gradually. What block your body to recover naturally are stress and your attention to hear it. The British Tinnitus Association has crucial information on this.

    Consider this too: Have your vitamin D level checked with a blood test. Low D causes inflammation and stress.
    D helps the body to heal/repair itself. Stress can burn up/deplete your vitamin D "storage" as well.
    After a prescription of 50 IU's a week for 12 weeks I was re-tested on the low end of the "normal" range. That was 2 years ago. I still have tinnitus but I feel far better overall. Approximately 1/3 of the U.S. population is low on D.

      Your body activates the sympathetic (fight or flight) nervous system just before you wake up in the morning to help with the process of waking by flooding the body excess cortisol/ adrenaline etc. This is a normal process but due to the hyperactive state our nervous system is already in with tinnitus it causes a spike in symptoms. Take a moment when you wake up to take 10 or so deep breaths and activate the parasympathetic nervous system and see if it helps.

    My tinnitus started after using Ear Dry....my ears burned like they had acid in them with this stuff. I rinsed the Ear Dry out and was left with tinnitus. That stuff should be taken off the market. I wound up in the ER with 210/100 blood pressure, way above what I normally have....the sound gave me intense anxiety, which just magnified the sound. I also felt significant vertigo that happens mostly during spikes. Went to an ear dr. and she said I'm getting old age hearing loss (after testing), but no solution to the sound. Thankfully I look forward to the fact that some days are better than others. Stress and anxiety are the worst sources of spikes, so I work hard at relaxing...easier said than done.

    HI. I have been meditating.. trying not to react. I reread your book over the weekend but the ringing is still very bad..for one week since i went to concert. It is very high like you described in your book when you were at your worst... I am trying to not react but it's hard.. any suggestions? I have thought about doing Gabapentin but i just don't want to go on medication especially since the interactions say you could get a viral infection and I don't want that. Any other suggestions Julian. I am doing craniosacrel on Wed.. but she is not good but i am just desperate. I did have dental surgery five months ago, so my question is can relaxing your facial muscles cause tinnitus to go down..because that is not your nervous system? So I am confused.

      Please note, I've had tinnitus constantly now for over a month ( I'm 50 ) I'm fit, vegetarian and athletic, I'm a yoga Teacher so I practice and teach on a daily basis and I've been having acupuncture sessions ( twice already, once a week ) Plus drinking the herbs given by the doctor, mind you it gets even louder when they put the needles around my ears, on top of my head and other parts of the body ( it hurts so much as to make me cry ! ) Oh I should also mention that Ive been taking a pill of Gingko Biloba per day plus Gingko Biloba tea and some Serc pills ( once per day ) Given by the audiologist Doctor ( I had the hearing test too ) which are more indicated for meniere's disease which isn't my case according to the Doctor but I just gave it a try to see if it can reduce it or even miraculously go away from my head but all of this has not help my tinnitus one beat :(

      Patricia: Your multiple symptoms are a form of Meneires, which includes: Tinnitus (sounds in your ear), dizziness (vertigo) or lightheadedness, pain or stuffiness in your ear, tightness around the head, etc. I have the same problem, which is due to fluid buildup in the left ear. The problem with Meneires, is that Julian's exercises may help with all of symptoms, or it may just help to decrease with the volume (spikes) of sound. There is NOT ONE exercise or form of adjustment to life style (nutrition, supplements, stress release exercises) that will help EVERYONE. You will have to experiment and and find what works for you and you alone. This is a lonely journey in which you will be travelling alone. I wish you the very best on your journey to help relieve the worst of your symptoms!!

    Tinnitus since 25+ years. Always told i cant do anything and have to live with it. What i have found out, it has many things to do with a gastritis Typ a which went suprisingly to a Typ c. Maybe HP was the reason. Additional a MCAS has come. Sad Thing, nothing helps in a Spike. MCAS came 2018 i am Sure, when my Immune system broke down. If someone has gastritis and tinnitus, check with selftrying whether gastric inflammation has a relationship with tinnitus. Mine surely is.

    I've had tinnitus in my left ear for 30 years, but it was very mild. In the past 3 weeks it went way up in volume. I went to an Ear doctor and when I told her the volume in creased in my tinnitus she told me some fluid could have not fully drained from my middle ear. Update, it WAS fluid in my middle ear from a cold, and also the HVAC system evaporator in my van was dirty with mold and mildew affecting my sinuses that increased mucus output that wound up in my middle ear. I spend a of of time driving long distance. Update 2. I'm taking prescription Flonase and this lowered the tinnitus back to my normal very low level. HVAC system now cleaned. Also cleaned the tiles in my bathroom which had some mold. Too all with tinnitus that don't have a middle ear problem, you are in my thoughts. If a spike happens due to stress and out nervous system goes haywire, how can we get a spike the moment we opened our eyes in the morning? When we are sleeping, we are at the most relaxed state of mind

    • @JulianCowanHill
      @JulianCowanHill  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I feel that if you wake up with tinnitus this could either be because you are generally overamped and your system is too activated. Every morning The nervous system rouses us for the day and if we are already switched on then this can push into tinnitus. If we calm and settle and bring our overall activation levels down our idling speed drops, so to speak, and it doesn’t push into tinnitus in the morning.

If the body is pumped with adrenalin/cortisol then changing to a cleaner diet with regular fasting would be beneficial to break the toxins and remove them from the body? • @pianoman551000
      @pianoman551000 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      To Bookie: A change in diet, may, indeed, help relieve the symptoms of Tinnitus. You can only try the following and see what happens; Reduce or cut out caffeine, smoking, foods that are high in sodium ( fast foods, junk food, deli food,) or any food that that is highly processed. Also, many people take bioflavinoids and swear that their symptoms are reduced by the reduction of noise in their ear. Your Tinnitus will be always with you, but with experimenting with life changes, you may very well reduce the symptoms to the point that you may not even notice them as time goes on. Good luck!! (Most importantly: reduce your emotional reaction to the symptoms of Tinnitus. The more stressed out you become, the worst the symptoms will be for you!!)

Now I am having a terrible spike and keep thinking that the gong noise made permanent damage and the noise will stay that way, Do you think that will happen...or is this just a spike?

    • @JulianCowanHill
      @JulianCowanHill  9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It is just a spike. Even if you had damaged your ears, and you need a lot of noise to do that, the aftermath of tinnitus can back off. My advice is to go and have craniosacral therapy to help the activation settle and if you know any yoga or tai chi or gently body-based practice to practice this regularly most days to distract your attention away from the sound and into body-based well-being. Lots of baths, showers, focussing techniques: watch the slow movement video or the clenching and relaxing video. It is just a matter of time. Tinnitus is always a changeable feast.

      I never have a moment of silence. It's much quieter than it has been in the past. A couple weeks ago the sound in my right ear was so loud that I couldn't hear much outside noise in that ear. My eardrums also pulsate. It's really frustrating but less stress and more sleep helps to keep things at a tolerable level. Is this something you go through?

    Hello sir thank you for your work and dedication. I got tinnitus in 2004 at 20 years old after a sudden loud noise. After about a month it subsided thank the lord and eventually after a couple of years it became an afterthought. I dealt with a few spikes over the years, some that would last a couple of weeks, due to loud noise, but it never scared me like it did initially. However, 1.5 months ago I was at a wedding with very loud music on the dance floor and ever since I have been dealing with a very bad spike and it has not yet subsided. At this point I am starting to get nervous it might not go away. With spikes you stated that "99% of cases come down again", yet I have read and found that may not be true at all and I may have done damage to my ear and made my Tinnitus worse. Any thoughts on what may happen with my Tinnitus? Terrible feeling here knowing that my Tinnitus was not a worry for so very long and that one night may have ruined everything.

    I would like to email you if I could have your email address. I will start doing yoga at home and try that to see if it helps. I thank you for your videos and for the positive reinforcement.
