Mali Radojica - Epic Slavic Music of Serbia

  • A reupload from the original version posted earlier today--some people reported distortion due to the volume being too high so I removed some vocal parts and some instrumental parts.
Music arranged by Farya Faraji, based on folkloric motifs from the Balkans. This is another piece in the style of Balkanic music from Serbia, Bulgaria, and neighbouring Slavic countries. The instrumentation uses that of 16th to 19th century Balkans such as the kaval flute, the gaida bagpipe, a saz and percussions; my main inspiration being Kulin Ban's music, as I try to emulate their style and sound, go check them out if you like this style of music.
Mila Radojica is a figure in the cycles of Serbian epic poetry, traditionally recited on the gusle heard at the beginning of the song. He is a hajduk: real historical figures who were freedom fighters against the Ottoman occupiers, and were often bandits and highwaymen: they persist today in Balkanic folklore as Robin Hood-esque figures that often fight for the weak and the oppressed. Mila's story begins as he is captured and tortured by the Turks, but escapes with the help of a Turkish girl who falls in love with him.

Mali Radojica (meaning Little Radojica, and Radojica itself being a nickname from Radovan, or some similar name - there are multiple possibilities) was one of the hajduk characters featured in our (Serbian) folk epics (they weren't about singing, the melody was the same for every song, the point was in the story they tell). Hajduks were real, and often performed raids at civilian or even military targets throughout the Ottoman-occupied Serbia. They were commonly men who's family was killed by the Turks, and who essentially had nothing to lose, so they went to the forest to fight for freedom. Did Mali Radojica really exist, it is unknown, his story (which will be summed up shortly) seems quite fantastic, but is not impossible in theory, at least. Many of the hajduk epics were based around real events, which were, of course, changed to have a better story flow or more epic elements. The idea was that they boost the people's morale and give hope, hope of liberation from Turks.
Now, I've read the epic a while back, so I might forget a few things, but the general story is as it follows:
Radojica is captured by an Ottoman bej (sort of like a provincial governor) alongside several other hajduks, and the bej starts a celebration because capturing the hajduks was a long and difficult task. Radojica comes up with a plan in the bej's dungeon, to pretend dead, so that the Turks throw him outside, and that he can return and save his comrades, who are captured with him as well. However, the bej's wife wasnt convinced that he was dead, so she made a few "tests" to prove it. Essentially, he was tortured in numerous ways, but he managed to take all of it without moving. At the end, the bej's daughter enters, and Radojica opens one eye to take a look at her, but she saves him by putting a piece of fabric over his head, so that bej doesnt see that he is, in fact alive. She also tells bej not to worry, and that Radojica is certainly dead, and so he is thrown in the nearby river or lake. He then returns, liberated his comrades, and kills the bej and his wife, then marries his daughter (who fell in love with him, and helped him because of it.)
I totally recommend reading the full epic (and when you're already there, you might as well read all other songs of hajduk thematic)

The first (as well as the last) sounds were played on the instrument called gusle (fiddle). It is a string instrument that has only one, rarely two strings of hair from a horse tail and is played with a bow. The gusle remaind the guardian of the identity of the Serb people, and they sang about fights, wars, heroes, religion and the Kosovo covenant. This is the national instrument of the Serb people, whether they are from Serbia, Bosnia or Montenegro or Macedonia.

@@faryafaraji nice to know that you visited the Peloponese. If you ever come to Crete, Heraklion area, let me know. We have a huge musical tradition, which I believe you have already included in Degenis composition. You will adore it as the musical instruments existing in our local music are those you occasionally use. By the way, us Cretans still listen to our folk songs daily. Not as the rest of Europeans who only listen to their folk music on random festivals or movies

@@GreekAnthems I did go to Crete for a few days after Mani, but not long enough to completely soak it in--I think my next trip will be solely in Crete given how big of an island it is. I did however have time to go to the Stagakis lyra workshop in Rethymno, I took a video there of me playing the lauto while a Cretan played the lyra, it was amazing haha, I'll probably upload it soon
And indeed, something I really loved about Kriti is how much more present the folk music is present--I feel like there's much more of a respect for it, which is really great, it's such a unique style of its own within Greek music! Very beautiful island and culture you guys have!
