New S-Stock Trains on the Metropolitan Line

- It's August 2010, and new 'S-Stock' trains are being rolled out to the Metropolitan Line, and so we went with video camera in hand to go out on the network to track down the new train and compare the difference between the old A Stock, and the new units.
Recorded on 6th August 2010.
the fact that these trains are already 13 years old is mind blowing
It's crazy to think that the first batch of these trains have been in service for nearly 10 years whilst the youngest for just 3! Time flies!
Now 14

Wow - almost 7 years later. The open from end-to-end style is used on the Yonge line in Toronto and it's yielded the most interesting behavior: when there were separate cars, regular riders would know where to stand as they got on so they'd get off at their destination strategically (ie closest to the escalators, closes to the interchange tunnels). Since the Yonge line introduced "end to end", I've noticed the regular users now get on wherever they like but walk through the train to the 'ideal' exit door as their destination approaches.
Good point, i've noticed this (and done it myself) on these new ones on the metropolitan line. It's easier to wait nearer the end of the platform where fewer people will be (and therefore where there are more free seats), and then get close to the door you need when you need to.
I'm a daily commuter on the Yonge line and I definitely do this. I always ride at the south end of the train because it's less crowded (since many busy stations have entrances at the north end). As I approach my station, I walk to the north end of the train where the exit into my building is. And a lot of others do this as well, at Bloor station there is a parade of people moving southwards through the train, as people spread out along the train after boarding at the north end (where the main entrance is).
These trains still seem pretty new, even though its been nearly 12 years lol (edit: 14 😶)
ikr
That’s how you know you’ve done a good job
Yep, compared to the older deep level stock they seem space age. Hopefully we'll get the same effect when they introduce the "new tube for london" stock on the Piccadilly.
@@idot3331 I’m sure we will because a lot has changed. Except for that snazzy deadpool face at the front, the 2009s don’t really feel much newer than 1995and6s but now we get aircon, screens, open gangways and cool interior lights. Not to mention the nice front.
Yh
When I was in London last year I’d just got off the deep-level tube to switch to the District Line, was steaming hot and so was really glad to see an air-conditioned S-Stock roll into the station.
The chime as the doors open is so iconic
These trains still look new, but now they're nearly 14 years old! 😮
I'm glad to see London is getting air-conditioned trains. I've just returned from a 2 week trip to London (yes, in that cold weather), and was surprised to see how warm the carriages get when full (I was mostly on the Northern line). I can't begin to imagine what they're like in summer.
Yes. Too many mouth breathers
If u are watching in 2018 then you'll know that S stock has taken over the District, Hammersmith and Circle Lines too

Time traveling
bro r u stupid its the time
1:40 that jumpscare of the S8 stock’s doors opening
The new trains look so nice and I am so happy that the new trains will be more wheelchair accessible. They will really help make a good impression of modern london
As frustrating as it is that the Bakerloo line has seemingly been a bit neglected and not had new trains, I love the carriages on it. Somehow remind me of a 1940s casino!
I love the heritage of the A stock but I love the looks, the sound , the fact they are now self driving, and the door buzzer of the S stock
4:57 in around 2018....
It's 2024 and even the Piccadilly line hasn't got new trains 😂
3:33 bro, 13 years later and these signs are still on trains!
They still want to know what you think
@@Techlevel1534.u do have a valid point
Those trains still feel new to me. I have many memories of the older ones with the high backed seats. I was pretty shocked when the new trains appeared, British infrastructure had been so far behind for so long it seemed a miracle to see and touch the new trains. Walk through trains and air conditioning, was I dreaming?? :) Next I was most impressed by the London Overground new interiors.
Nowadays it’s nice to come to this comment section and see an old era of comments and what people thought would happen
I miss the A, C and D78 stocks so much
You miss old rattling trains? You do realize the new ones have airco right
@@MrJimheeren despite the S stock being fundamentally “better” than the previous fleets, the previous trains were far more interesting.
I miss the A stock
@RJ Trains Worldwide same
Same here they were faster 100%
I'm only nine so I can't remember them I always wanted to go on one though :(
Spencer Green I saw one in Acton town train museum
Same here
I have to say I am getting addicted to these videos. 🐨🇦🇺
Ooooo some more Vintage Viki on my feed.

The are currently no plans to replace them until the 2030s seemingly

I watch your vids and am subscribed, but this video is 11! Years old, these recommendations get out of hand :D
Lovely film, and presenter.
The S stock will be restricted to 62mph, even after the signalling upgrades, whereas when it was built the A stock had a top speed of 70mph.
Simon
citytransportinfo no
A modern signalling system doesn't restrict trains to a reduced speed.
I looked up the specs and apparently 62 mph is the top speed, not just one the train is limited to, so even if LU wanted to increase the service speed they couldn't.
The A stock regularly hit 70 mph in its prime, so it's sad that such speeds won't be continuing.

Bakerloo gets new trains around 2018, 8 years later it is going quick I remeber watching this in like 2010 bloody hell
I was born 4 months after this video was uploaded lol
I was about 2 years old when this was uploaded lol
Welp, it's 6 years after 2018 and the Bakerloo Line trains still haven't been replaced.
Piccadilly Line gets replaced first next year, followed by Bakerloo Line.
Bakerloo line getting new trains in 2018? That didn't age well lol. Hopefully they quickly implement the new piccadilly line stock on the other deep level lines too.
Seems like they will be getting them 12 years after that, thank you Siemens Mobility!
I miss the 'big mets' probably just nostalgically though.. I would have to get one every morning from Uxbridge when I was growing up. I remember being freezing cold in the mornings.. The S stock is a beautiful unit, they are very well built. Also, air con is a god send. The common misconception amongst commuters is that air con is for cooling, when actually the temp is automatically regulated for comfort. I think they are set to 22 degrees at a guess.
Wow.....looking at the other comments, it seems I'm not the only one that can't believe it's already been 13 years since the S-Stock started service!
Really well made and presented. I hope you will go and chase a few 378s, 172s and the 2009 Vic stock! Great stuff.
FirstClassFootage and nine years later, they are doing the upgrades this week

I don't think it was Geoff speaking
Probally not, Geoff is probally recording and has to keep quiet
And?
Pros and Cons with the S Stock compared to the A, C.and D Stock, but the air-conditioning has certainly been welcome on the S Stock during the recent heatwave.
Thing is tho, i think the "less seats but more standing room" is not very good, take some advice from the bus world, the more people who are sitting the happier they are. most of the time with these newer trains when it's crowded, all the seats are taken and you end up having to stand and on longer trips this can be a pain and when you do get a seat or you get the chance of getting one early it's so rock hard that you feel like standing, and I know that it's a metro train but even most metro trains aren't that hard (looking at you purple line). But I also get that those sorts of trains get extremely crowded so in my opinion they should use what I call an inline to window seat ratio. A good example of this is the b2k stock of the DLR (which are being replaced by b23 stock which is all inline)
Thing is that you need a good balance of window seating to inline seating that takes in to acount on the type of train, route, and journey time. so yes, THE MOST OF THE NEW STOCK TFL IS GETTING IS GARBAGE FIGHT ME

10 years later we are, and we still have the 1973 and 72 stocks still standing.
Here we are 10 years later the baker loo line still has the old trains
Belle vidéo Darik, tes vidéos sont toujours les meilleures
i like the sond of the opening door
You should try the Metro in Genova if you are ever in Italy. Catch it at Genova Brignole to ride it fully. It is rather historic and the new 2016 Stock Trains make mazing noises, so does the 1990 stock, (Oldest Stock Train).
We all do
It is satisfying!
We all do..
irene c italy? ‘Rona went there before i could
I remember when i first went on a metropolitan/circle/district train, i was so amazed because i was only used to the rest of tubes which are all the same dimensions. Was well impressed lol
Only thing i dont like about the s stock is that they made all the handle bars yellow, why not keep the m line purple like the old stock, and the district line keep it green and obviously same with the h&c line (pink)
Not too sure but I belive it's to do with RVAR 2010 regulation. Yellow grabpoles are easier to see for people with visual impairments so they went with that.
@@callofduty12316 right, that sounds familiar actually
I'm not sure why the Metropolitan line doesn't do it, but the H&C, Circle, and District lines all share the same trains (S7 stock), which are regularly switched between lines, and changing all the grab rails would be very tedious.
Can’t believe it’s 2023 already
I am an S Stock fanatic, and I travel on the metropolitan Line a lot, however since I mainly travel on the Uxbridge branch, I have not had the pleasure of riding one. Other members of my household have though, and they have, amazingly, criticized it!
I like the S stock, I've been on them many times☺☺☺☺☺
The train looks so futuristic... and this video was made back in 2010...
The hopes of the Bakerloo line getting trains in 2018... 6 years later and there's still no clear timeframe in which the trains will be replaced.
they're currently refurbishing 72 stocks so probably a while left for then
A lovely video on the old train..!! 📹😁
I never travelled on these! 😢
The new trains I have seen on the district and circle line! 👏
DoubleDeckerAnton hey again anton!
Stu Wilkes you are “smart”
They said that the S stock replacement'd be complete by 2015.It's 2017&there're still D trains out.
It’s 2022 right now and Bakerloo And Picadilly lines still haven’t had updates to them
At 00:24 the classic Jello effect from the rolling shutter of consumer digital cameras.
What I’m mad about them is that they replaced the A,C, and D which was pretty sad
I miss these old trains that operated on the Metropolitan, Circle, Hammersmith & City and District Lines
only did an old Metropolitan Line Train from Great Portland Street to Ruislip but didn't do the older Circle, District or Hammersmith & City Line Trains
5:21 anyone notice the terminating station was Baker Street?
Harrow on the hill station 5.21
Watford trains usually terminate at Baker Street.
Interesting video Viki, more please.
Nice Video Geoff Marshall
The same trains are also now on the Thameslink line from Bedford to Brighton with the same end to end design built by Siemens in Germany & presumably they built the S stock trains also.
Love the Mary Quant bob.
WOW 7 years old
Yeah, it's true, these are on the Metropolitan, District, H'smith & City and Circle
So the braking is still just as ear piercing
2020 anyone?

Great video mate I really like watching your videos there really cool and very interesting as well😌👍💜
These are nice trains and well lit, at the cost of 8 million I think, pretty presenter too, well done!!
I can’t believe the S Stock are almost 10 yrs old.. I feel old even though I was 5 when these came into service
It is a shame that there isn’t unique painted handrails, but the moquettes make up for them.
It would be a pain to give individual S Stock to all the lines, it’s more efficient to have all the trains running on the line with a single colour but notices to tell us what line the trains are on.
We caught the new style trains from Uxbridge and it was wonderfully airy and a great novelty to my son as he loved walking from one end of the train to the other!
I’d never stopped to think just how much better the S line is compared to the old stock. I wasn’t old enough to ride them during the summer. They must have been absolutely unbearable.
Never got a chance to ride the A stock, I seen them when I was on the district, I remember seeing high back chairs on the A Stock, I wish I could go on it.
Same here but I've never saw the A60/A62 stock.
Never been.on them myself tbh
Perry Mark Brackenbury LT Museum have one DM carriage at Acton Depot.
Perry Mark Brackenbury they were excellent trains that could get upto some speed and felt like an actual train rather than the underground. The seats were very comfortable
Perry Mark Brackenbury How Could You See An A Stock If You Were On The District Line?
If only we actually got those Bakerloo trains in 2018..
I really miss the A-Trains

Great video. Not ridden on one yet!!!
It's 2022 and still no new train for the piccadilly line
The new trains are better in every possible way but I still prefer the old ones. I can still remember the first time I rode that old stock but I don't recall my first time on the new ones...

Wow I'm the same! The old ones stick in your mind better I guess!

The S7 Stock in the Bakerloo line?? How did they want to put them there if they don't fit in the tunnel gauge?
I love to have a ride on these new trains. :-) Hopefully I should when I go to London in a couple of weeks time to connect en-route to Yorkshire.
Did you get to ride on them?
Loads of times now.
5:00 Bakerloo next for new trains? Oops…
I like the c stock layout nice seat arrangements
me Noob I like some old trains. And I like most of the new trains. I like the c stock. But I hate the a stock
The bakerloo line has the oldest trains in London.
Well done!
@@mtw227 I think their the oldest in the country now that the 38's were scrapped from the isle of wight.
I hate having no air conditioning on the train, I use it to go to school everyday and sometimes I find it difficult to breathe at times when it is incredibly packed
I've just seen the date on this video! I was going to say those new trains look similar, inside at least, to the trains that now run on Thameslink
2:20 S8 Stocks aren't the first trains to have air conditioning on the Underground - the title goes to the 1983 Tube Stock, though they were troublesome :/
Ten years later and it will be the Piccadilly that will get new trains first... but news has been silent for years now. S stock is beginning to show age, worn seats and burnt out lights, and the doors dont all open at the same time anymore.
Things I like about the new trains: walkthrough carriages, double doorways, standing room, open push buttons.
I loved the fact that at any speed the A stock would always soothingly rock from side to side which I miss on the S stock

Hi viki I love your All The Stations vids. Maybe you should do, all the least used stations in the country.
The Bakerloo line is the only one I haven't been on in the 2 times I've visited London.
0:46 well the sub surface at minimum, still got the northern and central line overcrowded or unreliable trains (in that order)
I miss the old A stock trains
Awww that's nice
The S stock first appeared in 2010 !!!!! i renember IT like IT was yesterday ( i hate it when the last train of a stock gos out of service 😬😬) no more A&C stock trains :( and no more 1962 Vctoria line trains 😥😥
It's been 8 years wow
nicely presented.
This is a well-done video, whether S stock trains are better or not. It was easy to see differences between two.
I think I like the older one, by the way.
Im only a few months older than the s stock and im 14 right now
same lol
I have friends that borned in 2010. He is also the same age of this train.
