Am I the only one that thinks Javert's melody is one of the best and most haunting things to listen to?
Javert's melody is actually Stars, not this. This is the "law" theme. The police sang it when they took Valjean back to the Bishop and the Bishop also sang it. But the Bishop's version is what the "law" was truly meant to be. It is meant to remind people of sin to make them repent, whereas Javert only condemned.
@@Jen-Yueh_Hu That's truly awesome. Thanks for making us aware of that!
No...your not
lyricspeople1234 it’s genuinely the only reason I come back to listen it
It’s so badass
"I have heard such protestations..." a line my teacher used to use whenever we complained about homework, and now I'm sitting here mindblown
You should be honored you had Javert in your school
Mercy on whoever dared to eat a sandwich during class.
좆돼지뚱뚱뽀개찔밥 No No! Stop this nonsense! You didn't do as your teacher dictated! *OFF TO 19 YEARS OF DETENTION!* Say thank you, you have been showed mercy.
+SoHardToBeMe no,no. he was given five years of detention for that. the rest was because he tried to run😉
@@LexitaMai 5 years for what you did, the rest because you tried to run! Yes 24601?
He did that microphone adjust so in character, I was like "Javert's got a mic!"
When does he do that?
@@ajayharry987 when he starts singing "tell me quickly what's the story"
@@pendarazaripoor4296 i didn’t see that
Oooooooohh only now i saw it , you’re right!!
Ohh the mic on the stand. I got it
3:07 Best microphone adjustment in the history of microphone adjustments.
I know he's just adjusting a microphone, but he doesn't break character!
Look at how slowly and coolly he takes his hand away from it, it's like he IS Javert.
phantomfangurl to me it seems like Javert wants everything to be perfect. Including the mic.
DAMN I DIDNT NOTICE THAT
This made me admire Philip Quast even more
I didn’t even notice it! That’s how natural his action was 😮
Just look at the applause at the end of stars. He just has this smug, calm look on his face. MAGNIFICENT
Ruthie wasn’t afraid to add emotion and a bit of roughness to her tone but her Fantaine still keeps an air of underlying dignity, which is more than those who turn her into a sobbing wreck.
Yes, that’s one of the reasons ruthie henshall is my favorite Fantine. She gives her emotions other than sadness and it’s CONVINCING
My thoughts exactly. There's this dignity she gives to her character that makes her story even more tragic.
so true
Honest work, just reward, THAT'S the way to please the lord...I love this Javert. Not only is he a great singer but the way he's acting with his voice is what separates him from other Javerts.
Wartoz the way he spits words like 'disappeared' and threatening commands like 'save your breath and save your tears'
"Even a whore who's gone to the bad won't be had by a rat."
One of the best lines in music.
Super minor character but I love the customer in this scene. Great acting, expressions, singing, costume... just the right kind of believable, blood-boiling sliminess for his character xD
Robin So true
Robin He played Monsieur Andre in Phantom of The Opera 25th anniversary
Robin the name is Bamatabois, my friend lmao
I was just cast as him in my school musical 😂
@@davidwatkinson5389 im late but i hope you did well
Ruthie Henshall is incredible in this role. Clear and crisp notes. Perfect tone. Great theatrical choices. Love!
+Hey Shmoley!
Exactly.
@@abenhur100 cd da w
I am in love with the way that Bamatabois rolls his "r"s -
"The usual prrrice... Is this a trrrick... as it is with a grrrocer ... when this prrrostitute attacked me." Just ... brilliant :')
Fun fact: it's because he's supposed to be a fop. A common affectation of English-speaking dandies at this time of the century was trying (and failing) to have something of a French intonation to their general accent, aside from sprinkling in French words. (Those rolls don't sound French, he's doing it wrong on purpose).
The extra fun part of this is that Batamabois is actually French, but because the song is English-language he chose to do that. Kinda like only some people having an accent in movies xD
Ok now I can see why people were so critical of Russel Crowe. This performance blows the 2012 film version out of the water. There are so many subtle nuances to the Javert character.
Hier ist der Grund, warum Philip Quast so gut ist: th-cam.com/video/Y6F5QgCXT4c/w-d-xo.html
I dont see why people were critical. While i prefer this cast theres no room for unkindness in theatre thats not what this community is about. People were coming for him personally too. Like honestly it dosent take much to be respectful
@@annabelcranston3618 Nothing wrong with being critical as long as it is objective and with substantiated reasons. For example "he sings like rubbish" is not acceptable. But something like "his phrasing on the second line lacked strength and direction" would be perfectly acceptable.
If you think this guy is good, look up Norm Lewis as Javert. He is fantastic!!
@@Jen-Yueh_Hu YES. FINALLY SOMEONE SAID IT.
'Who layed HANDS on this good man here' THAT VOICE THOUGH =D
Well, they call them the 'Dream Cast' for a reason.
phantomfangurl I can’t imagine anyone else singing. Best cast ever
3:04 That "Tell Me" lip sync by the Conductor combined with Phillip Quast's voice is BOSS.
i love the way that Quast says the word 'javert' here. It's like he cant get over himself. It's quite in character and frankly hilarious
he adjusts his mic in character so much so i was intimidated. this man is the best javert, hands down in both voice and acting. god bless you, philip quast!
This Javert is the Best
agreed
No one better than Quast
I think David Ordinas was the best in my preference.
I prefer roger allam, he, in my opinion, plays the role perfectly
@@siraeslava2562 pity though that we don't have a lot of clips with him
Quast's portrayal of Javert is perfect (especially when you see him in other things and realize how diverse his roles/singing is). And his diction, my god. I will never get tired of watching this whole concert, everyone is great.
I ADORE Fantine's voice it is absolutely phenomenal I'm speechless
Javert’s “THATS! The way to please the lord” sent me. It’s so in character, he’s a slave to the law. Just like Valjean
I still love how Ruthie conveys Fantine’s emotions so cleverly and smoothly, going from sarcasm to despair. Conveyed in her face and voice.
One of the best versions of Fantine.
That's what I love about his performance in this, you could literally point out a million nuances about it (I love the way he really seems to be remembering, turning his head away and almost muttering when he says, "you make me think of a man from years ago..." and the way he puts disgust in the word "con", etc etc.) The thing that I find truly crazy about this whole thing is that through reading interviews you know he was scared sh*tless the entire time, haha. Now that is true performing!
I would love to be like Philip Quast, as someone who still has some stage fright but dreams of performing on stage.
10th anniversary casting was hands down the best. Beautiful.
I just love how many people are amazed by how Philip Quast adjusts his mic. Good to know I am not alone.
Fantine:
Javert: *ENTERS*
Fantine: “Why do I hear boss music?l
omg this made my day
Javert: enters
Literally anyone: I hear boss music
Fantine: *dies*
Valjean: "Why do I hear boss music?"
Javert: "Valjean, at last, we see each other plain. Monsieur le Mayor, you wear a different chain."
😂😂😂
Now I imagine Javert just blasts his theme wherever he goes to announce his presence. And yes, I know they didn't have speakers in the 1800s.
I came here to listen to “you let your foreman send me away” over and over and over again. It’s so satisfying and beautiful❤️
Love how he snarls when he sings "let him answer to Javert", does put so much more into the part then lewis or allam
Love how in character Javert calmly adjusts the mic...
I absolutely admire Ruthie Henshall's voice, like how she can manage that kind of depth in her voice and sound so crisp and clean and still hit the high hopes O.o
(Not ignoring Philip Quast's amazing voice too)
Shes idol, shes everyone's idol
3:08 the way he fixes the mic so smoothly and says *Javert!' scratches an itch in my brain and I love it.
I love Ruthie, how she plays Fantine with strength and vulnerability at the same time.
THATS the way to please the Lord! .....it sounded like a BANG in my head. Hahaha!
How does this have any dislikes? I love Philip Quast as Javert, and Ruthie as Fantine. everything Quast does is in character even the way he moves the microphone, it's such a Javert move.
When she sang the "Come on captain, you can wear your shoes" part it's just sooooo good god damn it
wow the conductor knows all the lyrics! you can see him singing along before javert starts!
Ans conductor can do so. That is not terribly spectacular. Still a good job.
It's often how they cue the entrances. Plus he's probably heard the thing 100 times
a conductor must know all,it is a basic quest 😢They are great
*Javert's entrance music starts at **2:59* RUN AWAY!!!! RUN AWAY!!!! *everybody legs it like King Arthur and his Knights in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail"* XD
They write his character in very well. He gets his own scary entrance music and they've written his name into the script in such away that the characters have to half hiss it out which makes even his name something to be feared.
That's what I love about him! :D
MsJubjubbird Voldemort?
does anyone else get insane chills at 5:35
Every time
Sarah Young Without even clicking it right away, I knew exactly the moment you were talking about :)
Fuck yeah
Chills indeed; but my chills start at 5:23
Absolutely!! The pure sound when she sings “god” is what heaven sounds like! Total chills.
5:23: after numerous times watching this I still don't know why I'm intrigued by this glance from Fantine to Javert here...
Ruthie Henshall’s voice, her incredible acting just standing at a microphone, the haunting melodies, all of it. Incredible.
Ruthie is the queen of Fantines.
i love how javert pronounces the last part instead if singing it. So much authoritative Awesomeness.
Every time she says "I never did no wrong" I get chills all over o.o
That flip of the baton at 4:15
Love how when the guy points at his face he doesn't just make a gesture, the way he points makes him look like a child
Anyone else notice that the guy who plays val Jean is also in the 2012 movie. He plays the bishop.
yes Colm Wilkinson, congratulations, you watched a nostalgia critic review
Why would I need to watch a review to see that he's the same man. It's quite evident by his face.
It's amazing that he looks the exact same 27 years later
alexander hunt I just noticed that as well pretty cool
duh doy
I think Lea Salonga does I dreamed a dream better, but Ruthie's fantine for the rest of the show just gets to me in a way that Lea doesn't. Just the husk of her voice mixed with the look in her eyes sends shivers down my spine
I love how every person put their all into their characters no matter how minor the parts are, the ladies, the John.
Ruthie is an incredible fantine
3:07 It looked like he was about to sing.
This entire piece gets more epic with every additional character entrance
7:13 tfw you know you're screwed but you gotta act tough and hope he doesn't notice
As much as I respect Russell Crowe and the movie, his performance wasn’t as brilliantly terrifying as Quast’s. Quast and Ruthie are best Javert and Fantine. Done!!!
Agreed with ruthie, and partly with quast. I do love quast, but I prefer roger allam as javert. Ruthie, however, is perfect. Lea salonga did well, but ruthie's voice is something else
@@siraeslava2562 I wish there was a high quality recording of Roger singing Fantine's Arrest. Such a shame they only released a shortened version of the cast recording.
@@TSF_Ukraine I agree, I wish there was a good recording of allam, but I still love him

SHES SO GOOD.
Will never get over ruthies performance in this
"I will see it done"
"But m. Mayor"

"But m. Mayor
"I...will...see...it... DONE!"
If you get into an argument with someone who calls the cop by their first name, you can't win
True but Javert only has one name lol 😂😂😂😂
I love how in this scene valjean helps Fantine, similarly to how the bishop helps Valjean
Ruthie Henshall is so amazing and so beautiful and Philip Quast is an awesome Javert...
Oh and I keep replaying 5:06
best fantine
Holy God is there no mercy ? I love this !!!!
Fantine: Don’t touch me, leave me alone!
Old women: *standing 3 metres away*
Lovely interpretation of Fantine's arrest. I love how the actor playing Javert says "protestations."
Philip Quast is amazing.
this Fantine is sublime
I love the split second when he's been thinking about Valjean, realises he's effectively accusing the mayor, and snaps into reporting mode
Everyone's voice is gorgeous! Especially Fantine's!!
Especially 1:39 😌
There's a lot going on here - timing, melody, lines, pressure, cameras, lights, audience...and yet Quast is able to stack a boss level mic adjustment on top!
4:12 Javert looks as if heʻs leaving, but turns back. Itʻs such a small move, but so convincing!
at the very end...look how slyly quast looks over at wilkinson to see what his reaction would be at the mention of name "jean valjean." brilliant little choices add up to so much.
The words bring chills down my spine, they have a power that I can't explain.
The orchestra sounds so great with the xylophone.
at 4:05 Quast looks actually surprised at how loud his That’s! comes out
Omg 😂😂😂 I hadn't noticed
Oh Gosh, Ruthie is just SO amazing
I really wish i could have seen this wonderful cast in person
Philip Quast is my number one favorite Javert!
But Monsieur Mayor!
I will see it... DONE!!
But monsieur mayor D :
But Monsieur mayor!
Can this be true?
I don't believe what I see..
A man your age.. to be as strong as you are..
Came here after seeing this on TikTok. I want a song of just Javerts part
Javert: begone *thotine*
I was in tears and now i laugh. Thanks.
*Duuuuuuuuuuude* That was a proper bruh moment.
Ughh... her story makes my heart hurt. In a way the message of this story is as relevant today as it ever was.....
Javert is amazing. I love his voice! ^^
I love this version of Lovely Ladies so much more than any other I've heard because it has so much more rhythm, I think it carries the lyrics much better :D
when ruthie screams at bamatabois i get chills
MONSIEUR ANDRE'!!!
Heard somewhere he was Grantaire once.... and the Marius understudy too...
I wish I could put Quast in the film, he makes this scene so perfect.....as for Anne and the 10th's singer, I cant decide D:
But Monsieur Mayor?!?!?!?!??!?!!?!?
I'm pretty sure he/she are just quoting the line....it's a funny line indeed
Call me naive but when Lovely Ladies was my favorite song for quite a long time while I was a sweet and naive 15 year old girl. I foolishly assumed that Lovely Ladies meant women who sang for the higher class men of the society, hence Lovely Ladies. I still love it now even though I know what it means
YESSSS. I caught that too. Love him in the 25th Phantom. He does minor parts so excellently.
"Here's something new. I think I'll give it a try." Me: ".....Monsieur Andre?" 0_0
ReviewCam You mean from Phantom of the Opera?
yoyoeldas
He plays Andre in the 25th
I never noticed it was him, he looks SOOO different
I can listen to this till I die···
Javert’s voice just scratches an itch in my mind… 🥰
All of Fantine's monologue 4:55 onwards is just supreme... Ruthie was incredible in this...
5:35 that “God” is truly heavenly
So much is done with the eyes of the characters. The singing is superb from all three...but the acting is what makes this the best there is. Next level. And Quast's diction is so impeccable...even someone with my dodgy ears can hear every word cleanly.
2:59 is the best bit
Best Fantine ever
All of them are amazing
Javert is a badass. In every version...
THATS the way to please the Lord. I love Quast
The guy Fantine slapped is named Bamatabois, in case you were wondering.
I think the conductor fancied being Javert for a bit 3.06
5:10 best note in the whole show
My favourite note is when Philip Goes down on The word chain during the confrontation,
Philip Quast: you’ll wear a different chai
-aaaaaiiiiiiiiin
@@obiwankenobi9141 He sings it in such a menacing way! Fantastic bit of work by Mr Quast!
There's too many contenders personally: Valjean's high notes in his Soliloquy and Who Am I, Javert's climax in Stars, Marius's Empty Chairs Empty Tables, Enjolras's "They will come when we call!" at the end of ABC Cafe, Eponine's On My Own climax. They're all so amazing, and there's more I didn't mention
