    It's crazy to think that there was just a moment in time, a sliver in the grand scheme of things, where a musical brought all these different people together for one performance

      @@katesaporito7017 the ironic thing is he's not actually Irish. That's Jeff Leyton who is Scottish an did Valjean first in Manchester in 1991 and then on tour and in London. They should have marked Colm up as Irish and did so at the European football championships when they did a similar thing (it's on here, look it up).

    The best moment for me, alongside the Irish singer totally and utterly doing us as a nation proud, is when everyone; the Val Jeans, the cast and the chorus sing at once.

    For this to happen, a book written in 1862 needed to be translated into dozens of languages and sold all over the world. It would then need to stay popular for 118 years with re-releases, movies, comics, then be made into a French album, which would become an English musical. Then it would become popular in 17 countries at at least 12 (?) languages, so that all these signers would come to the same place, representing 4 mediums, a dozen languages, and 123 + years of the same story by Hugo. Wow.

    • @annakim9870
      @annakim9870 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      It's really incredible how even with the story taking place as a very specific time period in France had themes that would resonate all across the world

    • @wmier2
      @wmier2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@annakim9870 I agree. And the fact that Victor Hugo was in exile at the time he wrote this, this story managed to stay current and touched so many people. This is one of those stories that's a rare classic and, as you said, still resonates across the world.

    I was incredibly lucky to see Colm Wilkinson in the role of Jean Valjean and no matter how many others have played the part. Colm was and always will be Jean Valjean. Not only is his voice exquisite, he was also so believable. When he sang Bring Him Home the theatre fell silent. It was one of the most magical moments in the show and I for one was reduced to tears. No one has ever come close to singing this with such feeling as Colm, he sings it from deep inside his soul.

    What would Victor Hugo think of this amazing interpretation ❤ the songs, the incredible harmonies, my personal favorite is one day more, the power, strength, passion even the innkeepers get their bit comic relief, it's all heart stopping , then drink with me, a song maybe overlooked compared to the bigger stronger songs but the sadness of these young friends singing goodbye to each other in this sweet poignant song is underrated. The Japanese singer is so beautiful ! I'm very surprised because for me Jean Valjean is always a sad and grey man with a beard.

    I know nothing about music - but to translate English to any other language and still not lose the 'meaning' of the song is amazing

      Probably translated from French as the original was written in French.

      Andrew Lloyd Webber never wrote or produced Les mis. It was originally written as a French musical.

    The Japanese singer is a very famous celebrity in Japan...I am pretty sure with his education background and vast experience in performing, he'd know what he is singing -_- Just wiki for his credibility.
