    Sorry about the net. I lost my 30 year old Borodin Cutthroat net 3 times. Once on the Provo, the Weber and San Juan. Twice it took me over 2 hours to hike from my car to the spots I had fished in the DARK ! And cross the River. Every time I found it the net would be hanging from a tree branch. I have since had it refurbished by the Brodins and it looks brand new. I fish that River your at and will keep my eyes open. New subscriber, thanks for the vids.

    Thanks for our honest opinions, I use a hinged leader when indicator fishing. A straight piece of mono to a tippet ring or swivel for attaching an indicator, it makes for easier casting, adjustment and the hinge allows the flies to drift directly below for a better presentation and faster sinking.

      I tried them out and agree with some of the critiques on the video but another advantage I found was that the in-line nature of the Oros reduces tangles when casting especially with complex rigs.

    So far I’ve had great success with the Oros Indicator. I agree that there can be a little slippage here and there. I typically use either 5x or 6x tippet. I found that if I just crank down harder I have much less slippage. I’ve tried other indicators like a plastic ball/toothpick combo and the New Zealand strike indicators, as well as Thingamabobbers. So far for me the Oros is my “go to” when using an indicator.

    I haven't tried these yet, but I did try Frog Eyes recently. I euro nymph, and sometimes use indicators to suspend flies or to get a little more casting distance and a better long-distance presentation. Anyways, I found that Frog Eyes have a similar problem as you saw with the Oros, in that they aren't thin tippet friendly. On 5.5X I lost a few Frog Eyes due to them slipping off while casting and then floating down the river. Good thing they're good for the environment...
    The Airlock indicators are still my favorite, and I find them the most reliable for staying in place. I don't often lose the screw caps, but I know some people do.

    Great video as always. I'm having good luck using Troutbitten's indicator approach. Take a small (or medium) thingamabobber and loop a little tag of backing and tie a knot in it. Use an ortho rubber band (like a dorsey indicator) to attach the indie the same way is yarn. Works fine on 5x and easy to adjust friction for easy movement.

    • @stephencifka4629
      @stephencifka4629 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This system also works on a long euro leader as an easy alternative without a whole new rig. You fish the indie tight-line with the mono leader giving you great control.

  • @1NotAPony1
    @1NotAPony1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good timing on this review, I have been thinking about picking some of these up to have. What you said about slippage on 5x is a concern. I'm a big believer in having the same diameter from an indicator to the flie(s) to have as much of a straight line connection between the 2 as possible. If I win the set you are giving away, I will see if there is a way I can add an o-ring or gasket or something to help prevent slippage. I'm not much of an indicator guy since getting the T&T Contact II, but there is a time and place for everything. Bummer about your net. Like broken rods, bad things can and do happen.

    • @FlyingTies
      @FlyingTies  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah I agree about having the same diameter line from indicator to the flies, that's why I was a bit bummed about the slipping also. I'm sure they could add a gasket in future designs though

    I like the idea that the line would go right through them, might make casting a little easier and maybe land a little softer than a thingamabobber? Might have to use a tapered leader and screw it in the thicker part to avoid slippage.
    That’s a bummer about your net, hopefully somebody finds it and gets it back to you. I use a magnet system with mine, but also tie it to my sling pack with parachute cord or a long boot lace. I e list them walking through thick woods here in PA when fishing mountain streams

    Love the Flying Ties name. My wife will often mess up when I'm tying and say that. She's been doing that for years.
    Have you tried an indicator on your euro setup? I use airlocks or a Dorsey occasionally with my euro to get a longer drift, when the water makes it hard to get a good drift, or it's too windy to have fun with the euro setup. I don't have any problem with airlock on 6x. Real easy to just throw one on for a particular section of water and then pull it off for the next.

    I've been using these - they're a lot better than AirLock. The big problem with the new Airlocks that are biodegradable is they leak. I had a pack for one year in my bag and went Steelheading in November and every one of them took on water. At least with these there's no "air space" to be compromised. I've been using the small ones for trout so far past few months and they do slip a little and I found the solution with simply cheap O-rings from the hardware store. I mean like 5 cents each.

    I use the New Zealand system for a indicator when nymphing. I found the kind you were using to be to bulky and harder to cast in the wind. Looked like you had to cast harder to get the rig out on the water which may force you to use heavier leader material. Anyway, thanks for sharing.

    I know that I’m real late to the party, however, I’d like to know if after 5 months what is your opinion of the Oros strike indicator? Did you try the mediums? I’m looking for a good indicator only to adjust the depth of my fly and to keep my lighter tippet from snagging on the edges of my football indicators, which drives me friggin’ nuts! I need a good all around indicator that will allow me to tie on a jig and move over to a size 16-18 BH emerger patterns without having to change my indicator to do so. I was thinking about the mediums. Thoughts?

    I'm not much of an indicator guy but do carry about 6 different types just in case... Never tried the OROS. In some situations like most of the Missouri River in Montana, due to lots of weeds, indicators are typically more effective to use than euronymphing unless you can find an area without a lot of weeds or an area with a little more current. That being said, I caught bigger fish euronymphing but many more fish indicator fishing.

    You got to put the line through the grove and then wrap the line once around the outside of the line holder! I do that for air locks because I have problems with those sliding down as well. Using a straight leader instead of a taperd one makes it slide way more.
