Awesome build, dude. Applause! I am guessing that you probably used the intercooler more as an “air capacitor” aka plenum, which adds the bonus of cooling the charge a bit. 🤙
@@mhz-yn9gh Exactly! A single cylinder engine has the intake valve shut 75% of the time. When the valve opens, if you don’t have enough volume of pressurized air, the intake will drop back to a vacuum which means no extra power.
@@Dieselmonkey89, Awesome! You’re definitely one of the few who know this fact… I see guys trying to turbocharge small single cylinder engines and this factor is what prevents their success. I have a diesel engine that I was looking at putting into a mini Jeep kart project. What was the RPM engagement range of the Comet 40 series and did you have to do any adjustments to the clutch to get it to engage at lower RPM?
@@TROUROCKS The intercooler is mostly for additional volume of pressurized intake air. Single cylinder engines have the valves closed 75% out of every 4stroke cycle. 2-cylinders would be 50%, and a 4 cylinder engine has at least 1 valve open at any given point of the cycle. Without a large volume of air as soon as the intake valve opens the intake will drop into vacuum. Which means no additional power.

Ben Kempa it is a noticeable gain in power on the mid to top end, but the key is the intercooler. It adds volume to intake system, which reduces pressure buffeting from the single cylinder engine having the intake valve open only 1/4 of the time. If a short pipe with a small volume between the Turbo and intake valve is pressureized by the Turbo to 10psi, then the valve opens and the pressure still drops to a vacuum and no oxygen is added to the cycle. And now you have a plug in the exhaust giving no power back.
Have you tried keeping Turbo boosted air volume high but without intercooler? Curious how much intercooler aids things compared to how much of the aid is coming from the Turbo boosted volumes air flow that you speak of. If volume is what really makes it work and not cooling..... then potentially on smaller bikes without as much room could do without intercooler as long as big volume is still being boosted
