      that is not what the data is showing byd and tesla work in a different time line? Clearly BYD have the at home advantage but everyone else is essentially in the die hard fan base. i would keep a close eye on how the rest of this year sales goes because it seems this will be the wake up call for legacy. And yes the economic slowdown is just making it more apparent but not the cause because they are clearly buying BYD and Tesla

    People in the US can't afford a new car. The AVERAGE cost of a new car in the US is about equal to the average household income in the US. Inflation and mortgage rates and energy cost require more disposable income, leaving much less for a car payment... so they aren't selling. High end cars are selling, but the mass market just isn't there for high end cars.. the worst is yet to come.

    Ev car sales should be hitting peak now due to wretched charging infrastructure everywhere . Who in their right mind can endure searching for charging points and when found are often out of order. Also evs need to seriously up their game as regards charging times, whether at home or at a so called fast charge. If each country had the desired amount of evs there would be absolute gridlock at the charging stations. Road rage would seem like a tea party compared to the scenes that would be witnessed.

    • @TwoBassed

    Barring a serious auto crash, our hybrid electric Toyota Camry will last longer than our ability to drive safely--now that I am retired there is no incentive to replace it. But it is interesting to sit back and watch the transition take place. I figure this is comparable to the replacement of horse-drawn vehicles with automobiles. Thanks for keeping us up to date, Sam.

      Think back to those photographs taken in New York City 11 years apart, 1911/2 and 1922/3 ISTR. Motor vehicles had been manufactured in increasing quantities, if still very rare and expensive, for a decade, (and hand builts and prototypes by tinkerers for 2+ decades before that)
      The photos show horse-drawn to autos changing from roughly 98-2 to 2-98 percentages in 11 years time. Sound familiar? 2 decades of tinkerers, a decade of ‘only for the very rich/urbanites, then a decade of breakneck production increases and rapidly falling prices/adoption rate increases. I would guess that 2023 is now a ‘late in 1913’ moment with certain places like Western Europe, China, California and Québec living slightly in the future of 1914-1915. (In Norway, its 1919 and the war is essentially over)

    • @reiniernn9071
      @reiniernn9071 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I wish the best for your hybrid. And may very well last as long as you need a car (I'm in the same situation..driving a now young ioniq 5...not intending replacement, charging at home with solar panels whenever possible....which is most part of the year).
      Only I hope that you can get the needed spare parts long enough when toyota indeed fails as a company.
      (Maybe other producers keep producing parts when enough people wants them, I see that with a rover car owner. Still parts available after 25 years.)

    • @rogergeyer9851
      @rogergeyer9851 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Alan Jameson: It's as big, but will take longer, like decades. Even if not as good, as long as they're legal, ICE cars that older retired folks (like you and I) can safely drive several thousand miles a year or so, like Toyota Camry's, are plenty good enough, and relatively easy to take care of.
      Feeding a horse was expensive and work. Horses don't live all that long re working age. So in larger cities, the transition largely occurred in just a decade.
      Given AGW, it can't happen too soon, but of course, cars are only about 20 percent of the total problem.

    • @hokeywolf3416
      @hokeywolf3416 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Add to that all of the tens of millions of former commuters, now working at home with their ICE vehicles now rolling only 8k miles per year vs 30k before the pandemic. I'm one of those. I won’t trade for years.

    • @brunosmith6925
      @brunosmith6925 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I'm approaching my 70's (and still run my own company - since 1987) and here in the UK, a company lease on an EV (I have a model-3 Tesla) costs me (personally) almost nothing. The lease costs (including insurance) are tax-deductible, the BIK (benefit in kind tax) is 2% (compared with 40% on an ICE company car) and I charge 99% of the time at home.
      To have the use of this wonderful machine costs me (personally) about £60 a month. And most of that is electricity.
      OK... difficult for a retired person to take advantage of such benefits (it has to be a company car to be worthwhile) but for anyone whose company gives them a company car (in the UK), both the company and the employee save big time - and get a really nice modern EV.

    I just spent the last month and a half trying to buy an electric car here in the US. Most of the mainstream manufacturer dealers (Nissan, Kia, VW, Subaru) in and around the Chicagoland area were charging a "market adjustment" markup over MSRP from anywhere 2% - 20%. This doesn't include all of the other bogus fees they were adding over MSRP. So why would these companies expect for their EV sales to do any good in the US?

Most of the people who work for a living can't even afford a basic car right now. Rent, lease and new house loans are at the highest payment levels in the history of the US. Food is still way up in costs. Electricity bills are way up because of the cost of coal and natural gas. Cars come last if you can't afford food.

The least expensive functioning EV in my area of Minnesota is a 2017 Tesla Model S 100D for $39,900. The least expensive functional ICE car is 33X times cheaper. The difference in price will have to be borrowed from a bank, which produces nothing but misery and debt. The conversion to EVs is another large step down the path to rentier serfdom hell.

      @@tomdrewenskus8167 Indeed?
      FACT: After over 14 years of government subsidy and mandates, and additional fees and restrictions on ICEVs, the worldwide adoption rate is still only around 5%. And, like I mentioned, at least 20% of new EV owners, return to ICEVS. Not opinion...FACT.
      FACT: The average price of used ICEVs has increased to the point where they cost as much as new ICEVs, if not more so. More to the point, the average age of personally owned light vehicles had increased beyond 12 years. This shows people buying more older USED ICEVs, than either new ICEVs OR EVs. And, again, this is in spite of government force to the opposite. Again...not opinion...FACT.

If you have an ICE car now, why would you buy another ICE car, if you believe that EV's will eventually reach price parity, and every manufacturer will be making them. Not only that, if the government bans people from driving even the existing ICE vehicles on the road, you won't even be able to drive a car unless it's an EV. There are certain places like London and Paris where it's already very difficult if not impossible to drive an ICE car without an exemption.

If they were serious about it, we'd already have EV's under $20K for regular people but they can't be produced for that. If "new energy" was real and viable it would need ZERO government support. The market would decide, but since they can't exist without taxpayer monies then they will be nothing more than toys for the rich and/or ignorant self-righteous snobs. Once governments find something else to pontificate on, they'll move on from EV's and they will shrivel up and go away as they always have.
      Hybrids are the best solution as middle of the road usually is and they are most suited to cities, since majority of city slickers don't have a home to put a charger in like D. Vader trumpets in his comment.
