  • DIY on installing the Cree U7 fog lights. These lights come with 3 settings High, Low and Flash. Not only will these lights improve your night time vision while on the road they will also help you to easily be seen by cars day or night as u split lane traffic with the modulating light feature. I've had these lights on my bike for almost a year now and I can't see myself riding without them. They 100xs bright than any HID light and you can clearly see the road and light beam for over 2 blocks away.

    The red and yellow wires do not have to connect directly to the battery, although its a good idea to do so. You can tap into a 12v wiring source from the wiring harness and split your lead into 2 and connect to there respective switches.

    FYI
    Please check with your loca state regulations with regards to using the modulating light feature. For those of you living in california here is the legal code and definition for use of a modulating light.
    California Law 25251.2
    “Any motorcycle may be equipped with a means of modulating the upper beam of the headlamp between a high and a lower brightness at a rate of 200 to 280 flashes per minute. Such headlamps shall not be so modulated during darkness.”

      Awesome D. I absolutely love them, bright as all hell during dark night rides through the canyons here in the back side of my house. I use to be scared after hitting a bumper left in the road cracking my fairings one night ride home. Not anymore, i can see the road some 1-2 blocks down, and the flashes..man dont get me started on those, cars just jump out my way now and Ive never felt safer splitting lanes with them on. best thing is cops dont even bother you with them on. i cant say enough about these lights, I have two and cant wait to install my 3rd. Thanks for ur comments!

    All bikes should have a small strobe on them, riding a motorcycle is not the dangerous part , the other vehicles are the dangerous part of riding bikes. They do not see you and pull out in front of you. A friend wiped out the other day and broke his back because a lady pulled out in front of him. I put a small strobe on my bike and now people can see me coming in daylight or dark. All bikes should have a strobe, it will save your life.

    good day James, wanted to consult since they gave me a model lighthouse U5 and have the three wires, one red, one yellow and one black, can you tell me how many switches as conestarlos and I have to place. thank you very much.

    • @TheChemistDIY
      @TheChemistDIY  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      sure, no problem. i technically have 2 switches. if your looking to wire yours up like mine this is how I did.
      black wire to the ground of the bike.
      Red wire- i have a switch on because there may be some times when i want the lights on and sometimes when i dont. so this allows me to kill the power totally. To cycle through 3 different light modes i tapped into my high beam switch (left side fairing). when i flick the high beam from off to on this allows me to switch between the 3 different light modes. so technically the high beam has to be on in order for the fog lights to work.
      Yellow - Angel eye - i dont have it hooked up yet, this would require a 3rd switch. i made myself a custom abs 3d printed switch panel that mounts above the gauge cluster to hold my switches. ill see if i can post the link to that video next.

    Whats going on Jayvie. Im not sure what you mean by mini, this is the smallest version of this style of fog light that i have seen to date, if you know of something smaller, just like this one, please let me know. To further help you out on your decision to purchase this product the diameter of the largest portion of the light is about 60 mm or 2.5 inches (glass side). I like these lights so much I keep spares on hand just incase one ever goes out.. Hope that helps you out.

      Vinay Verma No the battery will be just fine. Since these are LED lights they are much more efficient in their power use. I run them every time I ride without any issue. If you install and do find yourself having issues I would suggest looking into your electrical charging system as it may not be puttting out sufficient power. Lights on 2-3 volts is the power consumption on my meter with the bike off, with it on and the charging system working properly I get a steady 14.4 v. so no need to worry.

      Question you may know this my dash when black the head light work and when I put the hig beams it show in the dash the blue sing of it when the the rest just don work don move nothing shows in the dash expect the beams I check the harness and all looks good
      Con you give any advice about that

    • @TheChemistDIY
      @TheChemistDIY  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gian, Sorry i'm not understanding your question. This is what I understated so far:
      1. You turn on the high beam
      2. Blue indicator on the gauge cluster comes on telling you your high beam is on
      3. ???????????????????????????????
      4. You checked harness, and wires look good.
      I believe what your saying is that your high beam headlight (projection bulb) is not working when you flip the switch. If this is what you are asking then here is how you troubleshoot
      1. Remove the dust cover and inspect the bulb (see if its burnd out)
      2. Add power to the bulb and see if its working. (just because it looks good doesn't mean it is...CONFIRM)
      3. Take a digital multi-meter and test the voltage in the headlight harness connector (should be 12v)
      (harness connector)
      (Grnd) | __ | (Low Beam)
      ^
      (High)
      If voltage is not there check fuse's ( under seat )
      4. Check Harness connection at the SWITCH ( unplug and make sure pin connections are good and
      free from corrosion or possibly broken within the connector)
      5. Check MAIN HARNESS connection (left side fairing) unplug and make sure pin connections are good
      and free from corrosion or possibly broken within the connector.
      6. Disassemble the STARTER SWITCH and clean copper contacts.
      Many people don't know the headlight power travels through the starter switch. When you start the bike by pressing the red button, the button cuts off power to the headlights so that enough amperage is given to the starter motor to turn over the engine. After time the copper contacts become burnt or dirty and need to be cleaned or the switch needs to be replaced if its really bad. If you ever have a problem with the bike failing to start this could be the issue as well...bad or dirty contacts.

      Nilotpal Nil, it all boils down to accessibility, demand and sponsors. If you know anyone in the South Cali area with one then great! let's put something together and see if we can get a few sponcers to back the review and installation project. I currently have an company waiting on me to review there LED lighting, problem is I don't have bikes to perform the install. I guess I could perform it on my own but then that would make people think my review was bias and that's not what I'm about.

      PRENZA CAUAYAN - I'm not sure of the diameters of the housing for that unit. The internal circut board of the U7 is roughly about the size of the bottom of 12oz soda can if that helps. As far as stealth well this is about as close as your going to get without some sort of modifications either to the bike or housing of the U7 unit. Remember stealth is what you make it when your dealing with aftermarket, I could technically remove my whole headlight and fabricate it to fit 5 or six of these lights if I wanted.. so really it's up to your imagination, skill level and how far your willing to go

    so you used a switch running from positive to the switch to the yellow and another switch from positive to red then black to black but i found out in order for the actual light to work you have to have the red and yellow hooked together right

    • @TheChemistDIY
      @TheChemistDIY  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tommy Kunkleman This is how I have mine ran. i have one main power wire running from the battery to the front of the bike (gauge cluster area) with a fuse in between incase something shorts (fuse is on battery side). from that main wire at the front of the bike i split it into 2 wires, one for the Yellow and 1 for the Red wires of the fog lights. each wire goes to its respective switch (2 switches total). The other terminals left on the switches connects to the one wire you want to power. I 3D printed myself a custom panel that sits ontop of my gauge cluster to hold all my switches (look in my video library to see). If you tie the yellow and red wirs together then both the demon eye and fog light will come on but you wont see the demon eye red because it will be drowned out by the white light of the fog light LED.

The switch diameter is thumb size just for reference and easy to find and trigger with gloves on. On the down side (which is not that bad) the LED bulb on this switch is HELLA bright at night, so much so that it tends to blind me when looking down, needles to say you wont forget this switch is on during the day, it just that bright. I'll post an ebay item auction number below, this is for reference only. I don't know the seller and have never done business with him but this is the exact switch I used.

    Brother I have one problem when I put this to low beam left led is flashing another is steady when I put to flash mod right is flashing other is normal this phenomenon started after one week highbeam is working good what can be the problem.

    • @TheChemistDIY
      @TheChemistDIY  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had this issue as well.. very easy to fix. You need to run a direct power line (+) from the batter to the fog lights. If you dont and your tapping of an additional power source from say for example the headlight hot wire, then voltage or current is to low for the switching of high/Med/flash on the fog. One light will get the proper voltage while the will not throwing both off sync (1 flash/1 on).
      Fyi when this happens you only need to disconnect power to the lamps for about 10-15 and they should reset. This 10-15 seconds it's the time it takes for the capacitor to discharge.
      Hope that helps

      @@jyothismgeorge6013 when I first connected mine I ran my hot wire off the high beam switch so I could cycle through the 3 modes.. really all I did was piggy back off the high beam plug that connects to the high beam lamp.. this was a great feature because the only switch I needed was for the angle eye but after a few times of turning on and off the high beam the lights would get out of sequence and one would flash while the other stood constant.. that's when I figured out that I would need to run a power wire from the battery and an additional switch solely dedicated to this function.. if you take a look at my newer videos this is the switch panel above my gauge cluster.

    • @TheChemistDIY
      @TheChemistDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      samir Khadka I can't speak of the U5 because I never went that route. As for the U7 they are amazing. If bright light is what you are looking for then look no further. Even during the day time I can still see the light being projected on the high freeway signage, which always amazes me. As for longevity of the light, as from the time of this video till now I've only had to replace one fog lamp. The LED died while the rest of the unit still worked (halo and red eye). You can buy LED replacement bulbs on eBay for as cheap as 10 for $3 depending on the wattage of the LED bulb, and then just solder them in. I don't have a single complaint with these lights. Hope this helps

    If they have the halo in GREEN your good ANYTHING IN RED OR BLUE IS A TICKET. Flashers in your head light are legal in all states. I HAVE A WHITE/AMBER hi/lo super bright small light so it looks great, mounted at my front fender lower bolt on a MT09 and a pair of denli's hi/lo under my regular head light and my regular head light has the flasher on the high beam 🤔 One I 100% legal and tossing way more light than you. The 2 extra light are on super quality switches in my handle bar easy to turn on and off. The deni is pricey but you get what you pay for. You can do the same I did but use 2 sets of the lower light it would be around $75 not including a quality switch. RIDE SAFE 😈

    I was wondering how to have it three modes in three way switch not one switching modes for all three.

    • @TheChemistDIY
      @TheChemistDIY  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jayvie, I thought about the same.. sometimes I find it a pain to have to power cycle the switch to achieve the desired mode. There are few ways that I can think to do this with a 3 way switch but all require some electronics components knowledge..
      Car Audio/Video parking break bypass:
      Back in the day when I use to do custom car audio/video installations I would install in-dash 7" tv units. These units have a buily in safety feature that requires a ground signal from the parking break to be able to view video on the screen while driving. Some more higher end units required a "double tap" signal of the ground wire and thus you needed a special device called a parking break bypass switch. As things got more advanced in car safety requirements, some manufacturers started utilizing a timed sequence of the ground signals in order to view video and aftermarket companies like PAC started making devices that employed a 555 time to give you an adjustable 2-5 second delay before the next tap to ground (output wire). You can find these units by doing a Google search or Ebay or Amazon.
      555 timer delay circuit:
      555 IC timer chips is an electronic component that times an output signal.. power goes in through one leg of the IC and travels out another at the legs set time. Same as the car audio video device except you're building your own for a few bucks. Do a TH-cam search for 555 timer circuit.. you just need the two outputs signals. One that will flash once and one that will flash twice.. or maybe not even that becaus as you move the 3 way switch from position 1 to position 3 you have to pass through position two (middle or off) which the fog light circuitry may register as a power cycle.. not sure, this would require some testing to figure out.
      Exploration:
      Opening up the fog light unit and finding the legs on IC chip which controls the light switching function and solder wires to each leg to your 3 way switch. This is probably the most sketchy method as you could burn out the chip and your fog lights become an over priced paper weight.
      At any rate I hope I gave you some good info to get you started.. keep me posted if you come up with a method.

    How do you connect the angel lights?

    • @TheChemistDIY
      @TheChemistDIY  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used T-Taps connectors connect to the high beam wires of my HID kit (+ and -). This Is allows you to use the handlebar switch to cycle through the high, low and flash built into the fog lamp, i usually ride with my high bream on but when i want to set lets say the flasher on, I just flick the high bream switch off and then on to get to the desired light function on the fog lamp. You are also going to need 2 auxiliary switches. One to cut power to fog lights (sometimes I dont want them on at all) and the other switch for the angel eye (YELLOW WIRE). This wire and switch is going to be connected to 12volts and the switch will allow you turn on/off when u want.

    • @TheChemistDIY

      +Rafiezal Marwazi, Yes, you can run a wire from the positive terminal of the battery to one terminal pos on your switch. the other switch terminal is where your yellow wire will connect to. If your going to run it this way i would suggest you buy a switch that has a built-in reminder light, last thig you want to do is come back to a dead battery because you forgot to shut it off, lol.. we all do it!

    Does any one have a diagram or a video that shows CREE U7 3 wire light to the 3 wire switch

    • @TheChemistDIY
      @TheChemistDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      David Melendez, i don't have a wiring diagram but i can run you through it.
      Rocker switch with LED light on it: this type of switch has 3 prongs. Because it has an led light to let you know the switch is on, it requires 12v and a ground from the bike or directly from the battery, the ground terminal on this switch is usually a copper color on one end. On the other end would be your 12v source from the battery or accessory (when key on). The center terminal is your output 12v which goes to the red wire of your U7 light. The ground wire (black) of the U7 light can be wired 3 ways, either to a ground bolt located on the bike somewhere OR you can tie it into the ground on the switch (which is i normally what i do) OR run a wire from the battery. Just remember that the ground terminal on the switch (if your sharing ground) will now have 2 wires connected on the ground terminal (one that actually goes to ground and one connecting to your U7 light (piggy back)
      Toggle switch: this switch only has 2 prongs, there is no led light on the switch. In this setup the switch is ment for braking the 12v source from the battery or accessory 12v. Here your just going to run a wire from the battery(or accessory) to one prong on the switch(dosen't matter which one). The other prong goes to your U7 red wire. As for ground for the U7 black wire, well just find a ground bolt on the bike, tap into a ground wire on the harness somewhere or run a ground wire from the battery, up to you.
      As for the yellow wire on the U7: this is the devil eye led wire and should be wired to its own switch. When you turn off the fog lights (white light) and flip this switch on it will activate the led within the fog of the color you chose. The angel halo will be lit as well. To wire this up youll use the same method i listed above, it dependson what swtich ur using... hope that helps

      @@chandang8818 the lights run off of 12v. When i metered them with my onboard volt meter they only draw 2v at idle. Once youre on the throttle this voltage drop is replaced by the stator. If your bike runs off 12v then these should work. One light at minimal is equal to the same light output of a normal sport bike headlight

      Ive ridden up on motorcycle cops and patrol vehicles with these lights on and never once has it been an issue. Ive had drivers pull up next to me in traffic on the freeway, give me thumbs up and say thats a good idea, they see me more easily as im splitting lanes.
      The key is not to be obnoxious with it. I generally dont use the flashing lights unless im in traffic splitting lanes. This is strictly a dawn to dusk application and never at night.
      Food for thought here, but if bicyclist can use flashing lights on the roadway and share the road without being a nuisance or danger then why cant motorcyclist.

      Excellent Question! i know the camera clarity is pretty bad as there is not much light in my garage but i positioned the fog lights to sit far enough over toward the fairing sides that if this did occur there would be minimal contact with the front fender. i have my bike lowered 2 inches so for those who are stock hight this may seem close but its so im my case unless you have the same drop. honestly i have not yet hit a dip hard enough to where the lights touched. if i did, 1) i dont think i would still be on the bike..lol as this is about 4-5' of travel 2) the lower part of my farings would bottom out with the floor, again 4-5 inches of travel. This was my same thought behind removing the lower part of the fog light casing. I didnt want the fog light touching the fender in any case. But yes be sure to mount them as close to the side fairings as possible and u should be good. Thanks for the great question .

      all depends if flashers are legal in your state. I split lanes all the time in front of CHP officers with these flashers and have never been stopped or told to tern them off. if cops were to sight you then u could argue in court that officers would also have to sight bicyclists and pedestrians for the same offence because they to use these flashing safty devices on publich roads while walking and riding at night.

    • @trykozmaksym

      I would argue about flashers - it draws too much attention and even distracts other drivers - imagine if everyone on the road had this nonsense - it would be a freaking carnival. Hasn't gsxr its own flasher for high beam? And btw, you keep saying about safety, but there's a tag STUPID FAST on right fairing :D that can hurt u more than u benefit from lamps.

    • @TheChemistDIY
      @TheChemistDIY  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The object of the flasher is to GAIN BACK the attention of the motor vehicle operator who is already distracted with the radio, cell phone calls, text messaging, and my personal favorite looking at themselves in the mirror while putting on makeup, not to mention those who are dozing off at the wheel. I think their distracted enough on their own and motor cycle related death statistics prove it. What's the first thing you do or think when you see a flashing light coming up behind or on the side you?
      You see California law makers saw the rider at an unfair advantage on the road. As a rider we lack the physicality of visibility due to our size on the road. Because of this, they gave us an option reserved ONLY for emergency and utility vehicles while on the road, the modulating headlight.
      California Law 25251.2
      “Any motorcycle may be equipped with a means of modulating the upper beam of the headlamp between a high and a lower brightness at a rate of 200 to 280 flashes per minute. Such headlamps shall not be so modulated during darkness.”
      To Answer Your Comments and Questions:
      “Imagine if everyone on the road had this nonsense, it would be a freaking carnival.”
      You hit the nail on the head MaxTryk. Because not everyone on the road has this option the motor vehicle operator (CAR OWNERS) know what’s coming (Emergency Vehicle, Utility Vehicle, or Motorcyclist) and how to proceed (with caution and yield the right of way).
      “Hasn't gsxr its own flasher for high beam?”
      Yes, it’s called the pass switch. When pressed it will activate the high beam. Problem being with this method is that you have to keep manually pressing the switch in order to achieve the modulation effect which takes your focus off driving. As a rider I have enough to worry about then to continually press this switch to get the attention of a driver who is swerving in a lane because they are focused on their phone.
      “And btw, you keep saying about safety, but there's a tag STUPID FAST on right fairing :D that can hurt u more than u benefit from lamps.”
      The sticker say’s “Stupid Fast” NOT “Stupid & Fast”, two very different things. It’s a reference to horsepower and has no inference to safety. Safety is an option left to individual. Moreover, Stupid Fast does not infer to where the horsepower is used, for all you know “Stupid Fast” could be used on track days only. What we have here is a statement based on assumption and if you didn’t know the lowest form of knowledge. Simply Put - th-cam.com/video/wg4trPZFUwc/w-d-xo.html
      To give you an idea of who I am
      I’m a 41 year old rider with two kids and a wife. I purchased my current bike with 40k miles on it, they speedo now reads 87k, so that tells you how much road time I see. My my previous profession I did Audio and Video fabrication for 5 years working with such people in the industry as Boyd Codington, APC, Bazooka, Audio Bahn, Kicker, and worked with the folks from Pimp My Ride. I have an AS degree in Visual Communication, BS Degree IT and partially through my Master’s Degree in Information System Security. I also have a 1.5 years of Microcomputer repair. So I would say I’m smarter than the average bear.
      Since you love to play off words, decipher this one. My riding “GROUP” can be spelled out in can of alphabet soup, on occasion we ride with the “Blue Knights”. So I would think I have a little bit of knowledge about safety and distractions.
      Thanks for your comments!
