Snapper Rear Engine Rider Part 1 - Will it Run Again?

  • This Snapper SR1230 rear engine riding mower needs a lot of work to get it running again, but it is all there, very little rust, good and solid. It needed more work on the engine than I was expecting, so I am splitting this project into multiple parts.

Funny how you painted the engine cover before you even check to see if the engine was going to be a viable save.. Reminded me of a friend of mine that bought a older car that wasn't running and he put all of his focus on getting the radio working. At least I got tunes. Lol..
    Great video by the way.

Back when they built mowers like they were supposed to. Like a tank. My John Deere riding mower deck is riddled with holes. Snappers three times as old and still looks great. I'm working on the seat and surprised how thick that seat pan is, and made in the USA.

When you were taking the head bolts off I was screaming loose HEAD BOLTS lol. Even the newer Vanguard engines do that nonsense.
Every oil change just go around and torque them down.

The starter is very easy to rebuild!!! I bought parts on Amazon and so far I’ve rebuilt 3!

I would fix the motor that's on the mower and replace those warn parts, gears, and plugs. You got easy access to all that stuff and for maybe $25 in parts, you'll have it running. I would guess the low compression was coming from all the leakage around the head gasket. Now that you've sealed the leaks, I would torque the head bolts on to spec, and use some Removable ThreadLocker. The compression should come back up, but then you may also have some valve work ahead, hopefully just an adjustment. I know exactly what you're feeling thou, just when you fix one thing, it's something else. Stick with it, that'll be a real nice mower.

Super vid. Ohm out that sparkplug. Should be between 5 and 10k. Or just get a new one. I had a snowblower plug lead me down the garden path. Then decide from there. I say FIX IT. I wanna know what it was. Thanks for posting.

I would go on with the repairs unless it would be cost prohibitive. Also do a cylinder leak down test on this engine. I have learned many things since I became a subscriber to your YT channel.

It's nice to have it electric start, but even better to it both electric and pull start. I would definitely try getting the parts and fixing the engine that's on the Snapper. If you do decide to swap out the engine, see if you can install a pull start so you keep both starting options available.

When u had the head off, assume the valves seemed tight/good. Yay here.

  • @FrankRuiz66

I'd remove the engine and see if it was a camshaft issue since it seems to be off in the timing.
You can use the power built engine to supply the parts
    Or..
You can use the cover and pill starter off the Signature series engine.
Those Snappers were great especially the ones built in Georgia.
I have a 91 hivac self propelled with all the trimmings built in Georgia. And yeah they are loaded with safety cutout switches even on the push mowers..
You'll enjoy the hell out of that thing once you get it running

You can grind down the coil legs some.
How much is it worth to you or someone else fixed up? Anything is fixable for a price.
Depends somewhat on what spares you have.
So far, coil, 2 tires, head gasket, starter gear set. And wiring repairs.
Is that spare engine better off in something else yet to come down the pike?
For sure a carb clean , oil change, new air filter and plug.
It’d make for a great video series, I’d sure tune in.
    Good luck.

Swap engines; get it running. Then do a tear down on the original engine and see what it may all need without spending money on parts trying to get it running!!

  • @graggcain9496
    @graggcain9496 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Randy if you are going to keep it I would spend the money on needed parts. If you are going to sell it I would put the other engine on it and get it running. Just my 2 cents.

That engine probably has a compression release - trying to pull it with enough force to start would be pretty hard without that. The downside is a "compression test" is misleading because you only see 40-60PSI and think you've got a bum engine.

I have a problem with my rider snapper mod E331518KVE The disc in gear is blocked while in neutral it turns. The gears are engaged, but the wheels do not move, only by pushing the vehicle by hand thanks to the help ti seguo dall'Italia.

Fix the original engine. I bought the starter gears. I need the pull starter for my snapper. I have the 12hp 30 inch cut too. 2991 or 92 or 93 model year. It will do wheelies. If I get carburetor to stop surging. My snapper belonged to my stepdad and he babied it. It started leaking gas and my sister left it outside and I got it. And I got it to run but surges. I'm ordering a new china carburetor for it and hopefully that solves the surging problem. My uncle was a snapper dealer. I grew up on rear engine snappers. I think they are the shit. Especially when pulling wheelies..lol
