Mitsubishi Shogun Sport 2019 - Is there a place for it in the market?

  • Want a plush family-sized 7-seat SUV that can really walk the walk as well as talk the talk?
The Mitsubishi Shogun Sport offers buyers looking for a larger mid-sized 7-seat SUV a tougher option that has real off road credibility. To achieve that, Mitsubishi has based this model on their L200 pick-up, but added a bit of stylish crossover sheen.
    Background
We've seen the Shogun Sport in the UK before. The first generation version of this model was, like this one, based on the brand's L200 pick-up truck and was launched back in 1998, initially badged as the 'Shogun Challenger', before being re-named a year later the 'Shogun Sport'. This car sold until 2009 in the UK and, though it wasn't replaced for our market, continued in redesigned form in other markets. It's only with the explosion of interest in recent times in SUVs that has made Mitsubishi's UK importers decide to bring the latest version of this car back to our shores.
It fits into the company's SUV range between the Outlander and the full-fat top Shogun model.
    Driving Experience
Mid-sized SUVs seem to be everywhere these days, but few of them are much use off a paved surface. That fact doesn't trouble the vast majority of modern family crossover buyers, but a few of them do really want to venture off the beaten track - or perhaps they want to engage in lifestyle activities that might involve things like towing on slippery tracks. It's these people that Mitsubishi are targeting with this Shogun Sport model.
It gets the same 2.4-litre turbodiesel engine you'll find in the current L200 pick-up that also provides all the underpinnings used here - so don't expect pin-sharp handling or a silken ride. Still, this unit produces 181bhp and a decent slug of torque - 430Nm - so this model should be well set for the towing duties that'll be assigned to it by most likely owners. Drive comes via Mitsubishi's Super Select II 4x4 system and a new, eight-speed automatic transmission. The Super Select II set-up allows the driver to switch seamlessly between two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive on all terrains. On tarmac, this means that drivers enjoy optimum efficiency in two-wheel drive mode, but can switch to four-wheel drive for extra stability when towing or in slippery driving conditions. The standard specification also includes Hill Descent Control, Trailer Start Assist, Hill Start Assist and a dedicated off-road mode.
    Design and Build
The Shogun Sport combines comfortable space for up to seven people with spacious levels of versatility and practicality, offering up to 1,488-litres of carriage capacity with the rear seat folded. Don't expect the third seating row to be really comfortable for adults, but children will be quite happy there. And there's comfortable levels of space in the middle row you'll be using more often.
The front of the cabin shares most of its fixtures and fittings with the L200 pick-up, so don't expect the more up-market feel you'd get in most obvious 7-seat 'D'-segment SUV rivals. Still, it's well equipped and everything should be easy to keep clean and seems to be built to last. The dash varies its hard-wearing plastic with splashes of silver and piano black trim and there's a smart high-mounted touchscreen that includes navigation and an incorporated rear view camera display. Through the leather-stitched wheel, you view a clear set of dials separated by an information display and above that, a graphic designating whether drive is going to all four wheels or only the two at the front.

In Australia, these arrived in 2015. The model is very close to getting a refresh.
Being in 'straya - we have plenty of opportunity to do a lot of highway driving and throw this around the bush, down tracks and through water. It is winning 4WD awards. It is a "value for money" proposition. It's not meant to be a show pony. You can properly get two wheels in the air and still move forward, traverse big ruts, mud, put a bull bar and CB radio into it (that's why there is a blank panel). It is a proper 4wd with low range, and can be driven in 4wd high on high grip (tar) surfaces with constant AWD.
You can carry a lots of stuff, tow three tonnes (with an Australian spec towbar), has good saftey equipment.
We have put about 65,000 miles on it in 3 years - and the only problem we had was a poorly plugged in fusible link in the stereo (which the dealer simply plugged in properly).
Oh, and sometimes "high and narrow" is the difference between having a stranded Rangie in a wheel rut, and a Pajero (shogun) sport that sails through. It is also the difference between the guy that had panel damage when he he a tree - and the guy who missed it because of more clearance. You can get it up some narrow tracks.

Yea, mate. This car is a good one. I also have one albeit an MT 4x4 and it's incredible how it can cope with the really rough stuff. Ours regularly traverses muddy, deeply rutted farm roads and high inclines but it literally never gets bogged down.

I bought this car last month. I have driven BMW, Honda crv, civic, freelander etc. I just luv this SUV. I DONT agree with what the auto press has to say about ride and handling. Its brilliant. I really enjoy it on tarmac and plan to do lots of offloading too!

Because a lot of the press think all vehicles should drive "sporty" and be good at "cornering".
I live in Japan and love road trips. I do not do "cornering". I slow down as it is dangerous to drive like an average car journalist as they do not see what is behind the corner. What if there will be a pedestrian or cyclist on the road? Are you able to stop? Roads are to GET TO PLACES not to do sport driving.
Now am I after something like Shogun Sport - the engine is small, the AWD is good, the trunk opens up, the price is adequate. I wish there was a 5 seat option with bigger trunk and split tail gate. This vehicle is narrower that most big SUV which makes it easier to live it and more comfortable for shorties like me.
I lost one friend taken by a sporty driver so apologies for the rant ...

@@valdius85 The Nissan Xtrail is the worst at this. It is so hard suspension wise, ok it handles well but on anything other that a road made of glass it rattles your teeth loose. I found the Pajero Sport ( Montero, Shogan) to be a well rounded 4x4. Far smoother and confortable.

Very good and informative review! To all the motoring journalists complaining about the quality of the interiors (not your case) and to all those who write negative comments without knowing, I'll tell something: My Montero (bought new) now with 227 tkm on the clock after 10 years of all road use (tarmac, off road) has worse materials than this but even after all these years the interior seems like new. I've seen other premium brand cars with leather dashboards and fewer Km who seem like used shoes! I would buy another Mitsubishi 4x4 in a beat because they know that making concessions for the interior quality in order to offer good reliability and cheaper prices is what's important for those who choose a car for its usage and functionality and not just to be "cool" and to show off. Mitsubishi, Suzuki, Subaru and Mazda seems to not having forgotten these principles. Toyota on the other hand, especially with the prices of the Land Cruiser, yes. For ex: A fully specked Montero Sport - £33,700 . A fully specked Land Cruiser - £57,200. A fully specked Peugeot 5008 GT line (not even 4x4 but just to create an idea) - £35,100. Even a Jeep Renegade Trailhawk costs more at - £35,800.

I got this SUV, since 2016, a diesel one. I just can say how much good can be doing off road, a real beast. Driving in 4x4 over grave feels a really different animal... Really exact, giving you a good road info. Driving over highways feels enough comfortable, giving you until 15 km/liter when you drive 100km/hour, and that's the best fuel economy I never seen on a medium size SUV (real SUV... I mean chassis+4x4+transfer box+diff locks). Isn't a sport car.. but is a really good animal if you like do off road.

Well done for reviewing this car for what it is and not trying to imagine it as just another fashion crossover. In a market flooded with SUVs this is one of the very few tough and off road vehicles sold in the UK. Unless you're willing to spend an awful lot more for expensive 4x4's from Land Rover and MB just about the only alternatives are the Land Cruiser and Ssangyong Rexton. This is a proper working off roader and all the better for it. If you need a car like this then the Shogun Sport, Land Cruiser and Rexton basically select themselves as a shortlist of 3. Ignore the usual reviewers who are obsessed with the idea that all cars should either drive like a sports car or be made by a German company.

I've noticed that the late 2019 versions of this model (non-facelift) in the UK now have leather padding on each side of the front console. Several reviewers in other reviews complained that their knees became sore when resting on the sharp console edge ( is a relatively narrow car?- It's narrower than the Subaru Outback I'm also considering). Mitsubishi have now also added usb points for the 2nd row of seats, since this OSV review. We've not got the 'face-lift' version yet in the UK which has been launched in Asia and Australia. I was also surprised that 'heated door mirrors are an optional extra! Some review drivers also complained that the driver's seat is too high and can't be lowered so that taller drivers (e.g 6 feet plus) can't see out when the sun visor is lowered. Anyone else experienced this.? Due to lockdown, I can't get to a Mitsubishi dealers to test drive one of these and so experience whether the above issues might affect me too.

That mess of buttons at 11:08 though... heated seat buttons are taller than the rest, which themselves are a hodge-podge of designs and fonts. Few other things scream cost-cutting than this, and really put a damper on the buying and ownership experience. A new and uniform button cluster might add what, another 5 bucks per unit to the cost, if so much?! Come on Mitsubishi, step up your game

Refreshing to hear a UK motoring journalist talking sense about the qualities this car has and why. This car works for Anglers and shooters, who sometimes need good offroad ability, decent suspension and a taller A/T tyre. This car has a centre locking diff and rear locker which makes a big difference. Its road manners, well I will learn to tolerate them. All good news when the UK is covered by an inch of Snow and the world stops. The Australians love them. Which works for me.

There is a place for that vehicle. I am after vehicle like that. Prado comes with many downsides and Sh Sport does certain thing better. There is room for improvement still though. :)
I like Mitsubishi and I would love to buy Sh Sport but do not understand their marketing decisions.
    1. Offer Pajero Sport in Japan. There is enough large BOF SUVs in Japan. People are not choosing Mitsu due to the perceived brand value and the detail of old Pajero - side door etc. There is more Wranglers and Shoguns on Japanese roads - that is M`s fault. In the meantime offer D:5 on other markets. It is an excellent vehicle for some people.
    2. The styling is fine. Use Triton face directly to lower the costs. I do not care if my "BOF go anywhere SUV" has the same face as a pickup truck. Price is more important.
    3. Offer 5-seats on all markets on all spec models. This is not that hard to do so do not be stubborn. Trunk is my priority - I am planning to put a dear in the trunk. I need space.
    4. Do not listen to car journalists who do not go camping/hiking/live on the farm/hunting etc. These are your customers. Listen to them and let them review the vehicle in practice - during the trips or work. BOF SUVs will never do cornering well. They are there to take me, comfortably, to the destination so I can do whatever I plan in a remote place.
    5. I miss low range in the Gr Cherokee. It is excellent feature to use not only on "extreme off road" but also when you want to go slow through the forest trails. Also, at least in Japan, the mountains are steep and it is often hard to go out to the road from the forest trail - going upwards and turning at the same time with only the front one wheel being on tarmac. Low range would save my clutch.
Keep up good job. Simplify styling. Look at how Subaru markets their cars. Offer a 5 people and a spare tire in the Outlander. The price for not knowing your customers is always low sales.

This is a good alternative to the rather pricey Land Cruiser in the UK. A proper 4x4 yet it amazes me how some people compare this to the Kodiaq and Qashqai, yes you read that right judging from some comments on other videos. Uneducated fools expect a car like this to drive like one of the usual suspect pretentious SUVs, then moan about it being big, slow and agricultural haha. This is what SUVs used to be like before this silly fashion craze for jacked up hatchbacks with that "off road look", but no capability. This does the job perfectly and the only people who will disagree are those who know nothing about the car.

Any more news on the implications for owners of Mitsubishi pulling out of the UK and Europe? I'm still considering one of these, and have asked a couple of dealerships about the mid-term and longer -term implications and haven't got any satisfactory answers. I'm guessing thy don't know either.
Specifically, I'm wondering what happens with a 3-year Service contract when Mitsi go in 2 years time. I'm told Mitsi will honour this for up to 10 years, but it's no good if I have to travel 100s of miles to a distant place for servicing, recalls, warranty work, etc. Customer care (from reading reviews) has been mediocre from dealerships here. How much worse when Mitsi are not a player in the UK market? No courtesy car freely available, for example, if you've driven hours to a servicing station might be a problem. A lot seems to rest on the Colt Car Company fixing this, but as this company is essentially all Mitsi what happens if it also goes 'tits-up'? How long will it take to get spare parts imported from Asia, such as panels or a replacement camera, sensor, if you've had a crunch? As of now, I'm guessing, dealerships won't be sending their mechanic for further training of Mitsi specific issues, so idiosyncratic issues with e S/Sport won't be so well know about. Of course, resell value will likely plummet if you think of trading one in after a few years.
Against this there seems to be a lot of L200s (which the SS is based on) knocking about and plenty of experienced independent mechanics. It's not the most sophisticated engine or car (compared to some), and I think that's a good thing as presumedly less of a hassle to fix. Reliability seems good (a part from electronic issues).
Last big issue. As of September 2020 in the UK the DVLC has re categorised this car as a commercial! Yeap, even the 7-seater! VED (after the first year) is now £270 a year rather than £150! Might be insurance implications for owners too as this is now a commercial.

And also people always joking because some of the owners like to install warning equipment 🚨 on their Pajero Sport & Fortuner (u are able to buy warning equipment for your car here in some store even though u are not an government official / police / military)
Just purchase a black Pajero Sport or Fortuner, equip it w/ siren and lights, voila.. u are now have your own unmarked car... 🚓
