Hi Matt. I worked for Mitsubishi for 7 years. The reason that they are rare is because they just didn't sell in big numbers new. Lots of them ended up as demonstrators and courtesy cars. GDi stands for Gasoline Direct Injection.. The five door is better to drive than the three door but both were a bit jerky to drive. Mitsubishi reliability was always high so they only ever came back for regular servicing. That model you bought looks like the Equippe version which was pretty much the entry level model and they also offered an Elegance model and one special Edition Warrior version for a short while. Unfortunately they were just dull and soulless but reliable. None of the guys back in the day wanted them as a smoker opting instead for the Carisma or Galant or the occasional Colt Mirage rather than the Pinin.
Had a 2000 1.8 GDI 3 door would NEVER start on its own unless with a jump had new battery all it did was turn over but it ran perfectly once it got going
@Drone Tours That's probably the GDi concept was good in theory but didn't work as well in the UK because our petrol is slightly dirtier than in Japan. Hence, they used to soot up regularly and could be difficult to start. Most needed a de coke by 50k miles. If memory serves me correctly, the original models were badged GL and GLS before they went to Equippe, Elegance and Warrior. And there was for a brief period an Evo version which I don't think was sold in the UK market 🤔
Hi Matt as a former Wheeler Dealer I really enjoy your videos as I was the same ,always liked and still do things done correctly and not bodged.Honest car traders are quite a rare thing and you deserve to do well...I love the observational comedy angle as well....I have only just stopped tittering about the "Feral Scrotes" mentioned in a previous video!! Good work mate keep them coming...
Bought a 3 door Pinin, new in 2001. It was written off in an accident and I am sure the car's safety features saved my life. Also had a Colt, a Space Star, another Pinin, a Carisma and an original design Outlander. All great cars.
You did well with this one Matt. Low miles and especially with no current major corrosion, they’re ‘hen’s teeth’ rare. I’ve owned a 2.0L Warrior’ Pinin (even rarer) for the last 5 years. Love the shape and short wheelbase. Have needed to get the welding done (to be expected) but we love it as a runaround. In the snow, the 4WD really is brilliant and great fun. AND I’m comparing it with a Range Rover/Landcruiser here. That flashing diff light still a problem (you didn’t mention). Sometimes just a sticky switch as the various modes not been used much but could be vacuum solenoid related. GDI = ‘direct injection’ petrol engine - main implication means E5 petrol only - 10% ethanol in E10 will eat the fuel lines etc eventually. GDI engines also found on some older Volvos too…..
Had a 3 door Pinin a few years ago👍🏻 All was good with it🙂 till we found out that the front of the car was mostly detached from the rest due to rust rust and more rust🤦🏻♂️
They were built by pininfarina and designed by mitsi!! I think most of these sold to British forces overseas as you could get a top elegance model for £8995 and sell it back in UK a year later for £10995. The joys of discounts and tax free
When Mitsubishi introduced the second generation Pajero in '91 they allowed Hyundai to build the first generation Pajero under license as the Hyundai Galloper, I bought a Galloper in the Middle East back in 2001, it was an excellent off-road vehicle and was more than capable of keeping up with vehicles like the Land Cruiser, Nissan Patrol and the Shogun when out in the desert.
You should get the £3.5k you're asking, especially if you tell them it's had a new flange. If they don't like the dent in the front they could always cover it with either red electrical tape of a Union flag, as long as the fit it the correct way up, like the last owner did.
If it’s a wheel bearing, the noise will increase when turning and loading up that bearing. So turn left for a right bearing and left for the right hand side bearing. The diff will probably make more noise when accelerating.
It's a pensioner job. He probably met someone at the bowling club who had a pit in his garage, and it sparked a " I must buy a tin of that red anti-rust paint, and slap it on while the wife is at WI" moment.......
Welcome back again 👋 Been sat back enjoying every video again but i must say love to hear that you’re proud of our fan. And can proudly publicly say you’re proud of your country
They are lovely little cars, used to see them loads when I was a nipper 20 years ago, love the old person details, out in the shed looking for some metal paint because some bits of metal are starting to rust… oh Iv only got gold, that’s close enough to silver for me :) I always preferred them in the metallic green for some reason…
Almost all of your videos’ scripts are similar and although I’m not interested in most of cars portrayed here I still watch every single one of them! Keep rocking, Matt! Thank you for your excellent content
Had one of thsse as a hire car in cyprus years ago...i was perfect...after 5 days i had to swap for a rav4 with the rental company...almost got it stuck on the shingle beach...the mitsubishi never even struggled💪👍
If you ever get offered a Topgear type job (which you could easily do BTW) please don't take it. Your major appeal is your honesty. So genuine. Long may this channel live
I know its been mentioned before, but you really should have a TV channel! This is the sort of thing the old school Top Gear was like, simple motor related stuff, rather than super car this, and super that. I'd watch it every week instead of my eyes glazing over when the Germans come out with yet another car that most people can't afford and that you couldn't take anywhere in this country anyway!
The rear centre seat belt identification is to help the "challenged" folk to connect the right belt with the right socket. Remember owners manuals of old used to tell you how to adjust the valve clearances, now days, to not consume the contents of the battery..... Flashing 4WD indicators usually mean that the desired function has not fully engaged/disengaged yet. Sometimes requires some wheel movement to complete. GDI is Gasoline Direct Injection, so the petrol is injected directly into the combustion chamber just before ignition. Supposed to be more fuel efficient than port injection and lower emissions. Same with the diesel engine, no pre-combustion chamber. Good to see it has been saved from the scrap yard for a while yet. Chassis rot is a difficult and expensive to repair well. Your cost for Waxoil treatment is very reasonable, good way to preserve any vehicle.
Picassos old mitsubishi actually turned out ok in the end what a strange we wagon. 😮 good video Matt 📹 👍 i like these proper random motors that u end up with 😂
'D' is Deeside and Chester, going by the Holdcroft number plates aswell, it was originally from Holdcroft Mitsubishi in Stoke On Trent. Madeley Heath Motors is a Renault dealer in Stoke On Trent also. I did my work experience there.
Just a thought, but whenever I pull the dipstick on a car to check the oil I always sniff the oil on the dipstick. The smell can tell you a lot about the condition of the oil and give a good indication of the condition and use of the engine. If it smells strongly of petrol then maybe the car has only been used for short journeys and never warmed up properly or the engine is rather worn internally and the oil rarely changed.
Well done Matt...1.5k to 2k profit 4 minimum work to the vehicĺe is a great days work...someone will be buying a good solid vehicle with only 47k miles on it and in pretty good shape safe in the knowledge its been serviced well and has had a new clutch, catalystic converter etc etc in the last 2 years...Good purchase Matt and enjoy the profit margin...Keep up the great work and great content and can't wait 4 your next video...👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
There are few 4x4 type cars of that size and shape that is actually a proper off road capable. Lots of similar cars now are cladded off road styling that are almost unchanged from the hatchbacks it shares a platform with. Some of the modern ones seem to rely on driver aids and a slight lift to qualify as an off roader. All of them would be sumpless wrecks with bumpers hanging off if you tried to use it like these Mitsubishis
Red oxide paint, same stuff as the forth road bridge, we used to paint it on stuff after welding. Pinin did the Matrix, I think it was an intern design contest
I've got a 1991 Shogun that just keeps going and refuses to die, the 2.8 diesel engine is slow but reliable, the bodywork is tired but keeps passing MOTs, any advisories are dealt with at the same time, Mitsubishi built well.
Drove a three door auto version with diff lock on holiday in Cyprus back in the 90's and it got me hooked on SUV's. The drive and ride hide are good, best of all it was easy to park being a smaller size. I actually like the square chunky look.
I had one of these as a hire car in Cyprus a few years ago. I loved it. A nice handy size and not to high up seating position. Great for taking in the views and good for driving in traffic on unfamiliar roads. The one I had was automatic and It did seem a bit thirsty. I have often thought of buying one here in the UK but have never come across a decent one for sale.
James May did say, the Pinin is a car that is designed by the Japanese and built by the Italians lol. These do rot badly though but a rare sight probably for that reason. Great video.
What's with the pininfarina badges though if it was designed by the Japanese? Also advertising if you ask me. Reminds me of the Alfa Romeo Arna, a mis marriage between Alfa and Nissan back in the 80s.
I was pretty optimistic for this car; it looked well loved. Sure some of the 'care' has been very much "Driveway Mechanic" standard, especially that Union Flag to cover a dent, but the fact it had been rust-sealed suggested a previous owner was prepared to lavish care on the car (Opinions on the red colour is each to their own), but things like the front still having official Mitsubishi mats and it showing signs someone had cleaned it regularly must've all been good signs. Again it's an example of how reliable a car can be if cared for properly; an 18 year old care that is known for major rust issues, and all it needed was a wheel bearing.
I don’t know what it is but I always found Japanese plastic interiors feel so much more solid than French equivalents or dare I say it some German brands!
Oooh, this is brave Matt. Aren't these (in)famous for rotting away? Jesus, I've never seen one that shiny! Anyway, to quote George Formby, "turned out nice again"........ I need to get you to fill in my lottery ticket Matt......
Hi matt and everyone else who can answer my question, relatively new to my interest in cars. I decided in 2021 to service my car myself, kept receipts and took pictures of all work carried out, since then I have took my car to VW specialist garages. Worked on these when they were new and in warranty as we were mitsubishi dealer . Relatively reliable car. Mpi engine was the better choice as the GDI engine suffered from coking up which caused running problems. Plus a expensive vehicle to repair due to part prices.
I've a 3 door 1.8GDI. Had it almost 5 years as a fourth car! They drive really well and more civilised than a Jimny. Great for nipping around and bad weather. Even towed my mates LR 90 when it broke down LOL. Rust is the killer, but if you get a good one, worth every penny. The engine oil in the GDI does turn dark almost instantly after an engine oil change, and mines done less than 50k miles and had 5 oil changes while I have had it the last 8k miles. If I could buy a new one I would.
If memory serves To engage 4 wheel drive, through the transfer box, you need to drive the car forward for a few feet. The 3 door was fun but not the best on road experience.
I had a 2000 1.8 GDI 3 door this is the 2.0 with 129hp Bad points very prone to rust Very thirsty And valves can suffer from carbon build up like every GDI engine But best part about them is that are they are very collectable and good off road and on road
These were great little motors - especially the 3 door 2 litre - went like sh*t off a shovel and actually handled (believe it or not) All the running gear is good, interior is a bit "Suzuki" (basic) and they love to rust. The rot is worst at the back, deep under the bumper where you can't see it.
Used to sell these, bit of a bouncy ride and the GDI needed a decoke in 50,000 miles blamed on our fuel...the Lancer was priced at 9995 with 3 years servicing thrown in about 2005 which sold ok.Even the Charisma wasn't bad when it used the 1.9 did Renault engine and leather seats for about 12k.
I wish they were that cheap in Australia I am actually in the market for something like this at the moment so this is a rather poignant video for me thanks! Cheapest one here in Aus at the moment is $7K AUD
Check the spare, on the last half dozen cars I've bought at auction the spare doesn't match or fit. The original scalloped wheels are far better than those after-market rubbish which need different wheel nuts and don't fit the wheels correctly. And check for a sheered stud. The Pajero with 4WD and diff-lock has really good traction on compressed up-hill snow, especially the automatic. You are struggling to get 10 km/litre. Rear brakes are drum here in Japan, discs on the rare turbo model. I always dump that thin sump shield. Cosmetic only. You can double skin with a doner. If you hear a grinding noise from the front, change into 4WD. Ten-to-one the the noise will immediately disappear. You can change back to 2WD later. 4WD is the default setting and a pneumatic change mechanism is used to engage a concentric gearing. AKA the dreaded flashing light. Jack, the Japan Alps Brit
Cool little cars that are great to drive , they rust really bad however as mentioned. We had the 1.8mpi 4x4 and loved to rev all day long. Gdi was the performance models
I suspect that the red paint is what old farts like me used to call 'red lead' and was commonly used in the 70's to fend off corrosion. I used it as undercoat for a damaged/repaired wing on a Beetle.
I don't know about the nomenclature Mitsubishi uses but I own a Hyundai i20 N-Line which has a T-GDi engine and that stands for "Turbocharged Gasoline Direct Injection".
Just come back from a holiday to Zante and I hired a 2022 suzuki vitara. The first thing I did was to look at the tyre brand and they didn't disappoint, I had a full set of linglongs.
Something about this car really took me. I checked your website just now, guessing you sold it! Shame these videos tempt us with cars that aren’t around anymore!
Had one of these as a first car. My mum forgot to put on the handbrake it went down a hill and into someone’s house. Since learned it is living another life at an off road centre.
You were close with Jimny, I had a 1990’s Vitara 5 door it needed some suspension links, the parts that fit like a dream had Mitsubishi Pini on the label and compare the shape….🤔
Haven't seen one of these for years, harks back to a time when cars like this were 4WD. Sounds like its not a bad one so hopefully some profit in it for you.
Hi Matt. I worked for Mitsubishi for 7 years. The reason that they are rare is because they just didn't sell in big numbers new. Lots of them ended up as demonstrators and courtesy cars. Galant always rather liked. Carisma bypass made in Netherlands and was another good drab car. A lot of Volvo sharing.
@Drone Tours That's probably the GDi concept was good in theory but didn't work as well in the UK because our petrol is slightly dirtier than in Japan. You wouldn't notice the pinin if there was a Galant in the showroom it was so much cooler
They are everywhere here in Greece. The 4 door lwb pajero where far rarer.
Sold as the Pajero iO here in South Africa. Rear diffs used to explode at high speed I recall.
What! Oh gosh!
Do the diff gears not handle high RPM well?
That they did, after giving owners years of diff whine notice.
Delighted to see the Flange is all good. Can't beat a properly functioning flange. Nice purchase Matt

Amen 👍🏾👍🏾
Nothing wrong with profit

Not just a soft roader, has low ratio and diff lock. The horsey brigade round here liked them as a second car, to go with the Landcruiser.
not a horsey person but i have a land cruiser and have considered one of these as a second motor
Yes, I too thought calling it a 'soft-roader' was selling it a bit short - along with the Vitara, which is also a capable vehicle in the mud.
Ahhhh Matt, I could watch these videos everyday... Oooh I do! - keep up the great work, you are a true talent.

1:06 GDI stands for: gasoline direct injection.
Mitsubishi was the first to introduce direct injection for petrol engines this on their Carisma.
the crooked badge on the front is hiding a large stone chip I would guess
Its a mini Shogan and an ideal village car. Well done Matt.
I think someone has done a DIY rustproof job with a tin of Red oxide Paint
It's a pensioner job. He probably met someone at the bowling club who had a pit in his garage, and it sparked a " I must buy a tin of that red anti-rust paint, and slap it on while the wife is at WI" moment.......
You just get better with every video. Really appreciate the break down of costs and the trials and tribulations of buying and selling cars.
Great vid as always matt, certainly a car you dont see many of anymore, and another example of if you look after your older car, it will last.
Isn't that just "go faster" tape? It must be going dead slow since you took it off. Clean car, happy for you on the outcome.
Welcome back again 👋 Been sat back enjoying every video again but i must say love to hear that you’re proud of our fan. And can proudly publicly say you’re proud of your country
worked for mitsubishi at Ned car the netherlands! the GDI is Gassoline Direct Injection!
12.20 box in engine bay is the injector driver, control the GDI fuel injectors .

Had one of thsse as a hire car in cyprus years ago...i was perfect...after 5 days i had to swap for a rav4 with the rental company...almost got it stuck on the shingle beach...the mitsubishi never even struggled💪👍
People who are turned away, by used cars with only one key, will love this Pinin!!
If you ever get offered a Topgear type job (which you could easily do BTW) please don't take it. Your major appeal is your honesty. So genuine. Long may this channel live
at 12:20 you ask what is that unit on the strut! It's the flux capacitor!!!!!
How refreshing to hear someone correctly referring to the flag as the "union flag" instead of union jack! Plus it's a fab video!😊
I know its been mentioned before, but you really should have a TV channel! Good condition ones you are always on a winner
Red oxide paint, same stuff as the forth road bridge, we used to paint it on stuff after welding.
Pinin did the Matrix, I think it was an intern design contest
The storage by the drivers knee, are kneecap destroyers if left open when you get out, I’ve done it many times in my E61 painful
I've got a 1991 Shogun that just keeps going and refuses to die, the 2.8 diesel engine is slow but reliable, the bodywork is tired but keeps passing MOTs, any advisories are dealt with at the same time, Mitsubishi built well.

Nice, sorted, low mileage, little 4-wheel drive motor. Great for Winters in what I assume is your Peak District.
Hi matt and everyone else who can answer my question, relatively new to my interest in cars.
I decided in 2021 to service my car myself, kept receipts and took pictures of all work carried out, since then I have took my car to VW specialist garages.
I found the servicing process relatively easy and I enjoyed it. It also saved me money by doing it myself.

Relatively reliable car.
Mpi engine was the better choice as the GDI engine suffered from coking up which caused running problems.
Plus a expensive vehicle to repair due to part prices.
Crikey!, I had a 3 door one as a company car on an X plate. Really liked it, automatic, sat nav, leather/alcantara seats. Thought it was really cool 😎
I've a 3 door 1.8GDI. Had it almost 5 years as a fourth car! They drive really well and more civilised than a Jimny. Great for nipping around and bad weather. Hi Matt the red paint true name is red Lead ,in it's day a very good paint.
If memory serves
To engage 4 wheel drive, through the transfer box, you need to drive the car forward for a few feet.
The 3 door was fun but not the best on road experience.
No, GDI gasoline direct injection would be my first guess. Not sure the at the G would be for with a diesel
I had a 2000 1.8 GDI 3 door this is the 2.0 with 129hp
Bad points
very prone to rust
Very thirsty
And valves can suffer from carbon build up like every GDI engine
But best part about them is that are they are very collectable and good off road and on road
Amazing condition and low miles built like tanks apart from the rust Matt's a winner deserves it
These were great little motors - especially the 3 door 2 litre - went like sh*t off a shovel and actually handled (believe it or not)

I prefer the yellow shades you wore in your previous video, no joke they really suited you
You deserved a good profit Matt, honesty is rare as much as a Pinnin.....
Yo Matt, you r a very entertaining guy btw. I love watching ur videos before going to bed LOL
Thanks for watching
8:19 This is the special edition that came with blinker fluid. You'd have to pay extra for that
Great video matt so glad you got a good result will make someone a nice little motor so win win 👍
I wish they were that cheap in Australia I am actually in the market for something like this at the moment so this is a rather poignant video for me thanks! Cheapest one here in Aus at the moment is $7K AUD
loads of these where i live in the Caribbean, aside from the rust they're a perfect island car. price is eyewatering out here 2/3k for a ropey one
9:46 - and now that song stuck in my head...
Good deal for you, Matt - and what a good value 4x4 for the buyer!

Well done matt. Its the role of the dice.sometimes you win and others you loose
This has to be one of the best examples still around 🎉
Hello Again, Well Mat about time you bought a good second-hand trade in, not a bad car, well worth the money. Regards, RichardA.
No new plates, Matt you're slippin
Cool little cars that are great to drive , they rust really bad however as mentioned. We had the 1.8mpi 4x4 and loved to rev all day long. Gdi was the performance models
Madley heath motors is in Newcastle under Lyme
Awesome stuff.
You can make one really smart in this used car market 👏🏾
That car will sell chop chop
I suspect that the red paint is what old farts like me used to call 'red lead' and was commonly used in the 70's to fend off corrosion. I used it as undercoat for a damaged/repaired wing on a Beetle.
Great vlog as always Matt. Thanks 😊
I want this car now! Haha. Loved this video. Brilliant presentation.
what was the diff lock flashing for ?
looks a cracking wee car, what was the issue with the center diff lock flashing...
Another great video Matt. Im glad there is profit to be had on this Mitsi. I have always liked the Pajero Io as they were called here in NZ.
I don't know about the nomenclature Mitsubishi uses but I own a Hyundai i20 N-Line which has a T-GDi engine and that stands for "Turbocharged Gasoline Direct Injection".
I had a 1.8 elegance 3door for 6 years. Did nearly 200k miles without missing a beat. 24 mpg and rising fuel costs put paid to it tho’.
Just come back from a holiday to Zante and I hired a 2022 suzuki vitara. The first thing I did was to look at the tyre brand and they didn't disappoint, I had a full set of linglongs.
Not my type of car but for someone wanting a rough and ready semi offroad runaround, its ideal.
At one stage the carpark of our local bowling club was full of these and Rav4s. I suspect because they are easy to get in and out of.
That was a real result for you
You deserve it
Well done Matt nice one Cyril
Something about this car really took me. I checked your website just now, guessing you sold it! Shame these videos tempt us with cars that aren’t around anymore!
Lol at a distance the electrical tape on the front looks like a nice design flare that was original 😅 it's got matching mats as well
I don't know in the UK but in my homeland, those were pretty reliable. I’ve had two (the year 2000 and 2009)
Replace the union jack sticker with a longer Mitsubishi one.
The British version of Tyler Hoover of Hoovies Garage. Top work Matt!
I don’t know what’s happening anymore-this is two good ones in a row! Congratulations keep it going 😂👏
Thank you!! 😁
Perhaps the Union Jack position to the right is the past owner's statement on the state of the UK?
