A negative for TikTok is that it doesn’t always promote genuine creators. I don’t like to put so much emphasis on originality, but everyone should at least try to put their own spice on the content they create. A positive is that great content creators like Drew get to expand their platform and I find that amazing. Great video ! 👊🔥👊🔥

I personally think people def hop on fashion 'trends' to be part of it, but it also helps others, such as myself, find their true taste in fashion, which is good because they are able to experiment more on their wardrobe

The "copycat nature of the app" can be found anywhere. It just seems a lot more prevalent on TikTok because we're being fed similar videos all the time due to the algorithm. It's up to the creators to add their own spin to TikTok trends, but again, people are always getting influenced by each other no matter where or what it is. You (Drew), Ray Miah, and Kyron (gotsweige) tend to have really similar taste in style, and all three of you got that somewhere. Even TH-camrs use each other's ideas for videos. It just seems amped up on TikTok.

True - very very true. You know what it is I can watch 50 tiktoks and 25 of them can have the exact same feel but TH-cam videos are viewed at a much much slower pace

the shein hauls, the extremely mid fits, the lack of any fashion knowledge whatsoever - tiktok definitely didnt ruin fashion but atleast diluted the meaning of fashion. But it definitely has its positives, it can educate the masses about fashion due to its shorts videos catering to the masses's short attention span. In short its a double edged sword.
Thanks for giving singapore a shout out. From across the world, great video, keep up the work🙏🏻

    • @liltylenoll6955

none of this is because of TikTok tho. Mid fits and shein hauls would just exist on TH-cam and Instagram. Fashion has been diluted for a while I don’t see how it’s all of a sudden tiktoks fault

    • @commedicgarcon
      @commedicgarcon 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@liltylenoll6955 i never said the mid fits and shein hauls were because of tiktok they were just amplified alot on the platform, and since the tiktok has such a big reach it has a large influence on the younger generation. Which results in them conforming to trends as such. I agree that fashion has been diluted but the introduction of tiktok in my opinion has made it even more diluted.

For me I think it’s kind of strange that you have people who can put an outfit together, but have NO idea about the textiles or fabrics on their skin. Fast fashion has ruined that in my opinion, Shein, Zara, etc ultra hauls are just too much.

  • @nilseriksson8016

In my opinion Tik tok doesn’t ruin fashion, rather different styles. For example vintage clothing. When you think about vintage clothing do you think about flare jeans, disco-, Levi 501. Or do you think about these newly printed college sweaters that are colored in a “vintage way”. Because we see so much of the same clothes in the same category, our creativity with creating new fits narrow down. (I don’t if this made any sense, but those who understand understand :))

Another thing is that very less creator on til tok will tell others about what fashion really is . They also most of the time will only do trend jacking
so they are more behind likes and views and would wear something just for like that defeat the whole purpose of what fashion really is thats self expression.

I don't use tiktok anymore, nor do I use FB or Instagram anymore...
I've had it and not that I look up to everyone like the youth often do..
I often think it's people's second life and don't always believe that everything is real or that the truth is being told
but my daughter is 15 i'm 35... she often show me things on tiktok about fashion and also about online clothes like shein zara etc
but I think it's nice that such online stores are there, especially for the youth
they are already being driven crazy by all brands on social media and now they can also buy this or something similar but very good buy.
i always try to tell my daughter that she has to decide the fashion for herself if you are different from others don't join the hype and believe me 20 jqar ago i already thought so..
only then was only the street scene the inspiration so things have changed

I don’t think that tik tok is bad it’s just quick. Depends on how you use it. But to say TH-cam isn’t social media unlike tik tok would be false. I think both platforms are good on sharing info about fashion in general, but I think TH-cam is better because creators explain their outfits, their inspiration, and more tips in 20+ minute videos rather than 30 second tik toks. People share fast fashion on TH-cam, but tik tok is just easier to see and access for most people who do not want to watch 20+ minute videos. It’s just really how you use it. I prefer TH-cam fashion creators etc. just because like i said i can see their view like this video. But maybe I’m just ranting lmao. Good vid

Also to answer the question I enjoy how much social media has branched out my own style and evolved my closet into having much more diversity and looks. Some days I wana dress like an anime villain in all Rick and Vetements but other days I wana be a grandpa with pair of derbys cropped pants and sweater vest/cardigan. Sure, it’s annoying to see everyone wear dunks with cargo pants but it’s easy to see who actually has style and who just copy’s what is trendy. Granted sometimes it’s fun to wear something trendy to find a new look for yourself. Without the internet I would probably just wear vans and skinny jeans like I had been wearing since 2005. I feel that like Tik Tok has not ruined fashion. What Tik Tok did was force people of different sub cultures and demographics to become exposed to the most mainstream of fashion. The way I think of it is when I was in middle school, the majority of people wore Aéropostale, however there were plenty of groups people that might have dressed goth, punk, preppy, or wore whatever Walmart had on sale that season. While these groups of people are in the same space as the Aero people, you never were forced to interact with them. Tik Tok has a unique identifying feature to it that will force you to come across these people. I believe what then occurs is these people of different sub groups see the interaction numbers (comments and likes) that these 'Aero' people are receiving and then feel the need to contribute which over inflates the actual amount of consumers of these brands. In addition to this people like to claim Tik Tok lacks originality, but I think that is a negative take on the emphasis of participation on Tik Tok. Cheaper and trendy clothing from Shein, H&M, and Zara has always been desired in youth circles, and just like everyone wearing an Aero shirt in a middle school, it is accessible for everyone to wear clothes from these brands and therefore in order to be able to contribute to the participation driven nature of Tik Tok, people will buy and post these clothes. Essentially, I see Tik Tok as a giant middle school that is reinforcing a social fashion situation that really already existed. Tik Tok neutralizes most demographic separation, so if you like 'fashion' you will see all fashion. Given that the largest demographic on Tik Tok is the youth, it may seem that fashion is "being ruined" because for once in history, people outside of a certain age group are being reintroduced to 'middle school' fashion and probably never realized how large it actually is when you go from a 200 person school to billions of users. To clarify before anything gets taken out of context, middle school is merely a metaphor, point of this comment is to express my thought. After writing all this, I might do my own video to lay out my thoughts in a better presentation.

Tiktok helped fashion especially the poor kids now ppl popularized vintage or goodwill clothes aka hand me downs. They popularized cheap clothing. And fast fashion while i don’t agree with the labor and stuff. Popular brands like Nike use machines and over produce too. If tiktok ruined fashion then it’s probably just for the high end brands and their buyers. There’s no reason you should spend like a whole week/day worth of grocery shopping money when it costs so low to make. It’s just the name in it. Fashion isn’t just high end stuff. it’s whatever you like to express yourself so i don’t think anyone or thing can ruin fashion

For instance, I think you touched on this in ur video when you mentioned supreme. If you wear supreme now, generally you’re gonna come off as a hype beast, even if you never intended to be one at all. Here’s my thought about TikTok, I’m gonna look at the positive side of it. TikTok is not ruining fashion it’s helping younger people get introduce to fashion itself. Granted most of fashion on TikTok is streetwear but that’s where most people start. U see these videos of people dressing a certain way and that’s how people gravitate towards fashion and just feeling comfortable and confident about themselves, after that it’s up to the person if they wanna expand. Also a lot of fashion TikTokers starts there

I love these videos man. The term "ruined" in this sense seems way too absolute. Does Tiktok have negatives? sure. Does social media in general have its negatives? Absolutely. But ruined it? no. I think TikToks focus on the younger generation makes it seem worse than it actually is. I also remember all of us wearing fast fashion at one point or another and it takes time to grow out of that and figure out your own style. We just have to let them grow like we did and be okay with others on a different path than our own. What's worse than fast fashion? Fashion purists. I do see how social media has affected fashion as far as trends go and promoting insecurities. But at the same time it has been a way for people outside of the main fashion hub cities to become familiar with new designers/brands. If it wasn't for instagram I would've never seen those Raf Simons velcro shoes back in the day and maybe would've never known who he was. I also find it Interesting how instead of 1 trendy look that MOST people subscribe to everyone kinda finds their own aesthetic. (I.e. workwear, avant garde, cozy, etc.) The negative effect of that is it seems like it creates cliques. Like why can't workwear heads and Rick Owens heads hang out more? Lol. But the thing i hate the most about it all is how hard it is to get "hyped" pieces and especially sneakers. The community aspect of it is awesome but the people who try to be gatekeepers are annoying. But its interesting to see that the art of fashion and styling is now engrained in the culture so its more important than it ever was.

Being excessively influenced by Tiktok is lack of personality and that’s something that should make us reflect. Tiktok shows, do not force. We are able to chose what follow or not. As a matter of proof, google represents a priceless and fast opportunity in order to improve our knowledge, but it does not limit our education.

Good video. Personally, I think a lot of people hate on TikTok just because they're annoyed by seeing younger people do trendy things. These anti-TikTok people probably are influenced by other trends, too; they just don't notice it. It's really a social media thing. For instance, this wave of wearing looser pants, flare pants, and workwear jackets began due to social media. We dig it, right? Well, it's a trend, and we're not so different from the TikTok creators. We just showcase it differently.

Really appreciate your nuanced perspectives. I don't have tiktok on my phone anymore but when I did I used it to just expose myself to new forms and ideas. Fashion is a really interesting art in that it's so socially driven. Ultimately, I just try to wear things that I like, that make me feel good, and that are made and acquired as responsibly as possible.

Damn near everybody dresses the same now & its boring lol. A good amount of creators only push: Jordan 1s & 4s, Dunks, SBs, NB (990s, 992s, 550s), & Bootlegs of 1s (not reps lol). I get that they're "trendy" but some folks are scared to like things outside of those I listed.

I don't like tik tok because in my opinion it's an app used by people who don't have motivation to to something else. I also think on this platform there are many people that do the exact same thing( not all) and there is no diversity or other interests in public. tik tok is great when you spend like 10 minutes on your phone while waiting.
    Good and important video 🙏🏼

  • @raywearsclothes
    @raywearsclothes 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Personally, I think it's the algorithm that ruins it, you point around 25min says it well, the app pushes you content involuntarily, and whatever gets the most engagement, in this case, controversy, gets pushed. It gives little opportunity for content with actual depth to thrive because of the time constrain and algorithm, which makes the platform get flooded with "bad content", it's an app that promotes that kind of content. I do think there is a great chance for creators tho. Creators like you, Mark still thrived whilst making insightful/entertaining content. I personally got off the platform cus they took off the ig log in portal and i lost my account :), Good riddance(Thanos voice)

number 1 reason i hate tiktok is because it isn’t organic. You see every mf on there wearing Jordan 1s so the shoe rockets in price, and the only reason they like them is because they seen someone tiktoker wearing it. Same with underground music.. before you would have to search and search to find that one artist, only a few know about. Now you can just click an app see someone dancing to one of their songs.

Maybe do a piece on how many people are starting brands and if that might cause sustainability issues. More people are buying second hand and vintage but at the same time there are 500 brands popping up every day and not all are gonna sell, let's be honest. But there are some small labels that are 🔥

I really like tik toks fashion side at points but there are things I don’t like I think it is a little weird to say like “wear your Socks like This” etc. I think it’s ok to recommend this fit or way but it comes off in a way that’s like your doing it wrong. And I think it’s all about how you yourself express your clothes. I also think it has changed my opinions on certain silhouettes but that would happen regardless so yea it’s not all bad tho it’s nice at points and can help and lots of interesting people on there

I agree with the negatives because it definitely promotes everyone to sort of wear the same things, but then again the way that it is opening so many peoples minds to fashion is great I think. I really like that it is starting more people,( including my friends) to like fashion. Even though they start wearing all the basic race car tees with cargos and dunks, they eventually will branch out and want to experiment and thats where I feel like I am Rn!

Band tees are over, gorp came and went, the double knees are being tossed, they want the 8 ball fleece now. They said they are done with the bostons and the beatnik now it’s Tasman time. The Balenciaga days are dead, Gucci got used up, it’s Prada now.

In the video, you showed videos of the new balance 550 green trend. I actually really like how those shoes look, I found them randomly, and fuck with them. With the tik tok trend, however, it feels in-genuine now if I buy them, because it looks like I'm "going with the trend" which sucks because I'm not. I'm still going to buy them for me, but now my originality is taken because of tik tok

I miss the simple life. Since 2019, I feel that the digital world has expanded to the point of taking over our actual lives. Whether that be attention-wise or technology wise. How do people over consume TikTok? Seriously, the app is moronic, it has no substance, no expression, no real value other than pretty flashes of shallow nonsense, I really feel sorry for this generation because I really can't see anything of value coming from such a meaningless shallow hustle. EVERYBODY LOOKS THE SAME! Nobody has the balls to be themselves anymore, every outfit, style, label, and fit is exactly the same depending on genre, it's pathetic!

Good video Drew. I do think that true creatives can get big on TikTok, but not like TH-cam does. TH-cam usually does promote originality and creativity. TikTok can be creative, but for me, its not worth finding a needle in the haystack. The haystack is all the BS thats on the app and the needle is the actual creative stuff. I dont know. I dont use the app a lot, but it just seems like there is a lot of totally useless content on TikTok that really serves no purpose except to show off your body or outfit or whatever. idk. the app is not for me personally.
