Sambas are classic, Timbs are classic. They might become a trend and then get oversaturated amongst cool kids, but after that wave subsides they’re still classic. Thats what it means to be a classic. Maybe the people who think sambas are now cringe are the ones that jumped on the bandwagon the hardest in the first place?

Also kind of feel like thats whats unappealing to me about being into just plain “fashion” without any kind of lens or perspective on culture and community, such as you get from being in a subculture. The most interesting thing about clothes to me is they’re cultural markers of all these different groups of people, movements, scenes etc, and if you’re into THAT then you can combine different clothes from different scenes or reference points in a way thats interesting. Or just wear whatever the fuck you want, that also always wins.

Have a college degree in fashion design... but you can tell by how I wear my Timbs and Jordan's that they're not trends to me. They're part of the culture I grew up with in NYC. I think it's safe to say that Timbs have been a staple for a lot of new yorkers for a long time now. I think it's incredibly oversaturated in 2024 now, but ever since I was in middle school 2013-2016 and definitely before then too, it was 'trendy' to wear timbs for fashion and not just for workwear.

As someone that is into the alternative music scenes, the wallet chain as an accessory is actually really common in fashions that are associated with hard music. (Rock, metal, etc) Usually, in fact, if you get plaid pants for punk style it often will come with a matching chain attached to it. (Tripp NYC is a good example of this) So honestly I think that trend is probably bringing in some parts of pop punk with the 90s/00s revival

I just saw a video on instagram of footage from a camera that fell out of an airplane. At some point the camera was flipping so fast it synced up with the frame rate and just the video just looked weird, which I think is a really good analogy for how fashion trends feel right now to me-so fast, it’s not reality. I think that internet fashion content is sort of an echo chamber… algorithms feed you what you like over and over but it’s also unclear how many of these trends actually make it to real life for most people.
I have been seeing content about looking for inspiration from not internet sources and I’ve been feeling that heavily influencing my own style since last year-Japanese movies from the late 50s and early 60s, wow!

the underwear as outerwear trend often appeals to one body type (skinny, shorter torso'd/longer legged), which makes the boxer short variation more appealing for folks who want to participate. i do feel like miu miu fw23 (the show referenced a lot here for that trend) and the vibe it gave off fell into really great timing culturally, preceding barbie/barbiecore and after that "brat summer," which really plays off the similar "messy, party girl" attitude. really enjoyed the video, thanks for posting!

Black creatives like Tyler being influential is not surprising as culture loves to borrow from outsider communities. Lots of elements of hip hop fashion are co-opted but to get a different example the football boot/blokecore trend is very much so apeing English working class fashion. The (football) Casual aesthetic does have strong white working class connotations, but in places like London often Casuals were often quite diverse due to football being a common hobby in immigrant neighbourhood. The formal streetwear trend definitely pulls from Casual style as a lot of that style was dressing in (often stolen) designer jackets with straight leg jeans and adidas trainers for shoeing someone in at the Champions League Final.

well put. something I personally noticed in this video is many of the trends drew pointed out (underwear as outer wear, chains/carabiners, and boots with “non boot” clothing) have all been popular among queer people for decades. the “trend” happens when it’s finally adopted by the majority group

    • @lucenesylla1615
      @lucenesylla1615 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I also think the contrast in how that streetwear is presented is so interesting. For example, aspects of UK/football streetwear gained popularity within the U.S as early as 2019-2020 with more of a grime/football casual style with Nocta, Stone Island, Moose Knuckles, and Puma infiltrating trends mostly amongst suburban white kids as they were heavily influenced by Asap Rocky, who was basing himself with creatives in that space at the time and Skepta rose into Mainstream US consciousness with that wave of popularity. For the past 2 years, Black inner-city European streetwear has gained prominence globally, especially thanks to Corteiz and Nocta, but their influence outside the current trend of formal blokecore is slim in the United States but has completely taken over the European and Asian Market in addition to their grime style.

on ur point of wallet chains, i personally have recently seen them in the alternative context. i remember during COVID when the E-boy/girl trend was at its height, fake wallet chains were everywhere, esp on tik tok. perhaps this maybe driving the more decorative aspect to them? I also have seen it in context of chicano street wear, usually paired with 3/4 baggy pants (another trend i’ve been seeing get really popular this year, esp at my art school).

na i agree heavy on your point abt sneakers. timbs, gats and sambas r mad trendy, and they got pretty basic silhouettes. no one really wears 11's, or shoes that are really flashy. people are shying away from having their shoes as the statement piece, but rather focus on shoes being something to tie the outfit all together, which timbs, sambas, gats, etc do very well.

@@HiiipowerHabits yeah, but also kind of heartwarming how we reconcile with certain aesthetics. Back in my day, wallet chains were seen as synonymous with cholos, white trash, ghettos. Bad news.
My high school principal actually menaced with with expelling me if I didn’t remove my chain. That was back in… 1999 I believe.
Fast forward to around 2005 onwards I was cringely remembering that chain and wallet. That wallet! It was a monster, big, fat, black leather with an iridescent skull on fire. Now I remember that wallet fondly for being a totally representative artifact of those times.

    Two things:
    1. Edie Sedgwick invented the “underwear as pants” trend in the mid 60s. She put a shirt and jacket over her leotard and tights, running around New York after jazz ballet classes. The style originated in function. There have been resurgences every decade since then. Most notably when the biopic Factory Girl came out in 2007 moving into the indie sleaze era, which had lots of mod influences.
    2. Carabiners are a huge and historical part of queer culture, specifically lesbian culture. It was and still is a way to signal other queer women and communicate their preferences (like which side a guy wears one earring). They’re functional for the subculture but for other people it’s a “trend”

Not surprised you saw the keychain trend in Japan! Keychains and itabags are a big thing in j-fashion and harajuku fashion (ex decora) + both are a big thing in the anime/manga community and have been so for many years! I wouldn't be surprised if the current bag chain trend has its roots in j-fashion and the anime community honestly 😊

Wallet chains were “in” during the ‘90s and 2000s so maybe they’re just emulating the same style before, since late ‘90s-Y2k fashion is trending right now. Gen X here lol.

No one asked, but here are my comments on a couple of things mentioned in the video:
    1. Personally think other footwear beats sneakers in personal style and being fashionable, and yeah I have fully ditched sneakers, except when running.
    2. Timbs are sick, but worn by so many people now that it has less personal style than ever.
    3. Flats are nice, especially for the stinking hot summer days.
    4. High calf boots are also worn by many, but there are a million variants, and as you said; it is easy to personalize. Sick trend.
    5. Underwear as outerwear, just makes sense for hot summer days. It's basicly just short shorts.
    6. "Wallet chains" can be functional, but these days it's just another way to add another detail, pretty sick. I personally use it for my pocket watch lol.
    7. Personally didn't follow the olympics what so ever haha, but those fits are nice.
    8. Brat was ok fashion whise, nothing special though imo.
    9. Tyler the Creator fashion has only gotten better. Excited to see his future work.
    10. Bag charms are fire, love the personalization of otherwhise blank bags.
    11. Grillz are sick. An accessory many people aren't using, which makes it even better.
    12. Red as a pop of color, gotta be one of my favorite trends in a while. Shoes and bags especially can make an outfit x2 better.
    13. Pleated dress shorts are pretty cool. Dressing up while not dying of heatstroke.
    14. Formal streetwear is great, but thats also bc I heavily fw formality.
    15. Western moment was fantastic. Can't really ever get enough of that aesthetic.
    16. Maximalist accessories is fire, but can be too much sometimes, mostly its only positive though.

i have mixed opinions on the underwear as outerwear - ive seen loads of people start wearing the gingham style bloomers and i absolutely hate it, i i js think it looks too flashy and doesnt go w pieces and also they never fit right because of the material and dont make a nice silhouette , but i am in love the frilly lace bloomers that people have been wearing because it looks so soft and dainty and works with a lot of pieces because its js one solid colour + pair rlly well with high socks or boots and fits everyones bodies perfectly because it a such a stretchy and airy material

I feel like the best trend is the personal style trend. Tbh, not everything in the zeitgeist will be for you so why pretend. However, doing the work to find out what deeply resonates with you fashion wise is so amazing because as Helen Bonam Carter said "I think everything in life is art, how talk, how you dress...." so you might as well make it into a painting that even if no one appreciates, you do.

Watching such videos always makes me feel like I see a commentary on the present from the future. I say this since where I live (Denmark) most people (besides from Copenhagen) only adapt these trends approximately. 1/2 a year to a year after they have peaked online and in fashion communities. Am I the only one that gets the same?

Regarding the sneaker trend: I see adidas campus 2000s literally EVERYWHERE. I have them myself. They seem classic and nostalgic such as the samba etc. but they have a very different vibe imo. I live in Austria btw. So maybe it’s just a thing here. Loved the video btw! Keep up the great work 🫶🏽

I don't think fashion trends have slowed down but I definitely think that the general opinion on trends is changing, people will be most likely to point out and criticise when someone is following a trend and I don't really know if it's for the better. Having a personal style and wearing what feels right will forever be the best thing to do but trends still have a big impact on fashion especially for people trying to find who they are through their style !

i don't know how old my guy is, but it seems like some of these "Trends" he's remarking on are just him growing, learning and seeing more of the world. I don't say this to be dismissive, it just feels like some of the things he's observing as trends are actually he and his peers maturing.

I also feel that 2024 is the year of the sheer Outfit. I know it started in 2023 but I goes on still. Ties in with the mesh ballerina but we can also see it in other clothing and I personally feel like its such an interesting way to add texture to an outfit and go on the next level in terms of layering. Many ppl shy away because they fear the see through material but it is honestly so versatile and can look awesome on top of an already existing more casual outfit.
