The VM itself supports 4 and 8bit colour depth (16 and 256 colours). SymbOS itself is currently using the 16 colour mode, but there is already the idea to support 256 colours as well. For this I have to increase memory support to 16MB at least for bitmaps, otherwise this wouldn't make much sense. Regarding audio capabilities: Insane is planning to add dual AY-3-8910, OPL3 (FM) and OPL4 (Wavetable) support (interfaces already defined). So nearly everything you need :)
Great work! Is there any chance you could make a FreeBSD build as well, or at least open source the container so it can be compiled on BSD? Also what is InsaneOS? I googled it but I can't find any information.
hmm. second try to post a comment. insaneOS is my own, still unreleased, bare metal Operating System developed for Pi0-Pi3. Will be released later this year
The VM is GPL2 and only needs a Posix-like system and SDL2. It's already on my github - but without the Z80 Kernel the VM is pretty useless. Kernel will be released soon though!
@@whetphish github.com/insane-rabenauge/symbosvm this is the Github repo link. I am currently finishing a first release version of SymbOS for SymbOSVM (currently not included in the repo), will be published during this week!
Indeed, that's a good idea! Will it flicker on a TFT? (interlaced) At least 768x480x16 should look nice and would be possible. I am currently not sure if there is enough RAM for 1024x424, as the system font is cached in a hidden part of the VRAM for faster textoutput.
Z80 fluxkompensator aktiviert!
We definitely need a modern diy computer for SymbOS usage)
I can't wait to try out the VM for myself please make a video upon its release
Crikey.. excellent
This is awsome! I cant wait to try it out. Whats the max colour depth available? What sort of audio capability does it have?
