    I was once told, in a work training course, that motivation is about having a “motive for action”. At the time I thought that was brilliant, but as time went on I still struggled with motivation even when I had a good motive to act. Sometimes it works, but it’s good to know that actually sometimes we will need to push ourselves to act first and then the motivation follows afterwards.

      I’m going through counselling and they’ve told me to use behavioural activation.
      It means doing the act not waiting until you feel like doing it.
      You rate your mood before and after 1-5 and after doing it repetitively you want to get the tasks done as you have evidence it betters your mood and efficiency. Just thought it might be worth googling if you’re interested 🙂

      Motivation is a myth. Of course we are motivated to do what is good for us, but our habits are dragging us down. So it is all about replacing bad habits with good ones. It is hard and you do it one by one.

      Yeah… It’s really weird, but both times that I have successfully lost weight, it has come after a moment of just really feeling happy and content where I was in life, even though I knew I wanted to change some things and be better.

    "There will be days you look in the mirror and not like what you see." And now i'm fighting back the tears. I have literally never felt beautiful in my entire life (i'm 48...). Even on my wedding day i couldn't see myself as beautiful. Even though i thought my dress and hair and makeup were all beautiful, i felt like i was wearing someone else's dress, my hair was not mine but a wig, and my makeup looked too glamorous to be wasted on me. I felt like an imposter, like all of those gorgeous things were not meant for me. UGH...

      I think we are taught to be overly self critical. It sounds like you looked amazing on your wedding day and your minds eye couldn't relate to how different it made you look. If you can make a guy look like a sex goddess with hair and make up, you can make a person look like a model with make up. But it's not photo shopped. I wish I was that good with make up, I can't make myself look any better 🙃
      Outer beauty is superficial anyway, it's what's inside that matters, what's inside is where the beauty lies

      Hey Viktoria, “ do you talk to others ,in the same way you talk to you yourself?” I think about is a lot and even people who weren’t that respectful towards me ,I’ve still treated them with basic respect, then why do I deserve any less? This has helped me, I hope it helps you too.

    It's sooo much about the journey! I almost feel like saying f* the destination lol. I'm currently lifting and losing 20kg from having my 3rd baby. And it's a huge mental battle trying not to think about the destination. This is why journalling and goals unrelated to my 20kg weight loss is so important. It takes the focus away from the "destination" which is forever changing. Kind of mad but true!

    To the point that you touched on around the 12 minute mark - I’ve only recently learned about the changes and fluctuations in our appetite, strength and endurance throughout our cycle and it’s been such an eye opener for me. I used to get so incredibly frustrated because of how physically weak I felt (and still feel) in certain phases of my cycle, I would get on my mat to do a workout and not have any idea why I struggled so much to do something I did easily a week previous. Learning more about my biology and the hormonal changes my body goes through has put so much in perspective for me when it comes to optimising fitness and exercise. I highly encourage anyone who experiences a cycle to look deeper into the subject, particularly if you feel at all how I felt! It’s truly validating.

    Thank you for touching on all of these different subjects on how many women evaluate their bodies. Up until recently I have been overly critical and have had many dark days when I have looked into the mirror and simply was not happy with how I looked. It gives me great comfort to know that I am not alone in my struggle to be at peace with my body

    Wonderful tips! My BEST advice for weight loss is if you are someone who is dependent on booze - quit alcohol. Your body and all other areas of your life will improve too.

      Squash in the UK is juice drink concentrate. It comes in a big bottle and you water it down to make it drinkable.

    I agree that making happiness the outcome of a weight loss goal could lead to anti climax or disappointment when you reach that goal. However, I was in the obese category and it was urgent for me to get back in the normal weight range, especially with covid looming.
    I think the other way around, although it's the same. I won't be even remotely happy until I get down to 73 kg. I am glad I'm 76 kg rather than 81kg where I started on my latest diet, or 86kg which was my highest. That doesn't matter though, because I'm still over weight, I still look like a bag of potatoes when I dress up, I don't look good in my clothes and I can't stand it.
    I know being say 65kg isn't going to make my life better emotionally, that's a seperate thing, but just being able to wear clothes and look good in them will make a big difference to how I feel about myself.
    I'd like to be able to just plod along with small lifestyle choices and slowly lose weight, but right now I can't afford to be so lax, that's how I drifted up to 81kg this last time.
    Anyway, you look great, healthy and fit and you have an up beat attitude, so it surprises me that you would worry about people pleasing. Personally I think it's enough to just be ourselves, either people like us or they don't, I prefer people to be authentic.
    I'm prickly round the edges, so I don't make friends at all, that's who I am. I think some of the grumpiness is due to the weight. I see it in the mirror every day, I don't like what I see.

    I totally agree with you about not depending on others for encouragement or help, but i have been struggling with something sort of related to that. I do not expect people to gush over me or my progress, but i get very discouraged because i have a goal of losing 60 pounds, and i've managed to lose 20 so far. (Google tells me that's 27.2 kg and 9.07 kg, respectively) The problem is, even with this significant (at least in my opinion it is significant) amount of weight loss, i do not look any different. My clothes don't even feel looser. I simply can not understand how a third of my goal is achieved and it has made no difference at all in my appearance. It is really disheartening, and honestly it often makes me want to just give up. It has taken me 6 months to get this far, and so it's not been easy, and sometimes it just feels like working so hard at something is pointless.

      Look up the paper towel effect - the smaller you get, the more noticeable the changes will be. Also, take progress pictures because your eyes will lie to you. In the meantime, you are doing great and should be extremely proud.

    I’m doing a program I’m at day 10 and there is a hiit workout set for today. I’ve been feeling AMAZING and felt so awesome after the last hiit session. The difference is this today I don’t have a kettlebell and two exercises call for a kettle bell. (Part of me is saying 😠 why am I so shit at this I set a goal and now I’m ready to chuck it all in the bin) I wish my brain didn’t do that. Instead of trying to do a barbell swing and do a half arse workout-I’m going to do high knees. As long as my heart rate is up and I get sweaty and push myself it really won’t make much difference.

    Ad the don't expect support - I have a similar weight loss like you behind me (ok, now I have gained with the current situation and a stressfull period, but not all of the original weight, and getting back on track and am happy that I came across your channel). My experience with some people was remarks like:
    But with the weight loss, your boobs are smaller - from women with boobs anyways smaller than I still had after the loss and whilst I was greatful that I got rid of pain that even with pills was just bearable
    When people asked how I achieved the loss, their answer was at times - but I want to also live (meaning get all the beers and food I want, not workout and still be slim and fit)
    Also there was a lot of "encouraging" to skip workouts, which was extremely annoying and difficult to explain that it is actually fun for me to go to the gym.
    I personally found this really draining and annoying to put up with.
    And I want to say big thanks for addressing stuff like loose skin and all the "downsided" that rarely anyone talks about.

    I would love your advice, I feel so bad because I have been eating really well, even gave up sugar and soda for the most part however I have just binge ate a big bar of chocolate and biscuits because I was hungry and emotional, I'm really struggling to not be hungry and starve myself, but I also struggle with binge eating 😔 any advice?     YES. I've learned to validate myself thank goodness. In regards to friends and family. I have a mom who is diabetic and my little brother is on the way. I've been telling them to eat healthier in the past year and just gave up. I figured I would lead by example. Once they started seeing me lose weight (about a month ago) they've started to eat healthier and exercise. Nothing verbal has been said. I guess nothing needs to be said haha :D

    My health and weight loss journey is a bit of an odd one. For a decade of my life I had atypical anorexia and was constantly in and out of treatment. Relapsing and losing a ton of weight then getting tossed into treatment and gaining double, just gradually increasing my weight over time. By the time I was 22 I was 210 pounds at 5’2, even more full of hate for my body now that my hate for my body felt reinforced by society, and nowhere near recovered. Starving during the day and eating a days worth of calories in an hour.
    Then one day last November something clicked. I don’t know what. But I decided to track my macros and eat with the intention of fueling myself and very slowly and sustainably losing weight. I probably doubled my protein intake and started eating regularly in normal portions. For the first few weeks of this, I felt so good I wasn’t sure if I was having a manic episode. But I wasn’t. I was just feeding myself properly for the first time in my life.
    I’ve been cut cycling (15-20% cut for 3-4 weeks then 1 week at maintenance to maintain the integrity of my metabolism) on and off (some off periods due to burnout or extreme stress) since then, and I’ve lost 25 pounds. I’ve got about 20-30 pounds to go until I’m at my personal ideal (150-160, I have naturally high muscle mass). I think it’s important to emphasize that it’s okay to take breaks. It’s okay to just eat at maintenance for a bit if you mentally or physically can’t handle another thing. The world won’t end. You can always go back when you’re ready. This isn’t a race. Do I wish I was at my goal weight by now? Yes. But that’s not what I was able to do while maintaining sanity and health. So that’s okay.
    I’m proud of myself for being able to engage in nutrition and health with the intention of weight loss in a (usually) healthy way. I have friends who keep me in check and not obsessive. This may not be recovery the way Instagram pages and even treatment centers want, and I wouldnt even recommend it for most people- but the important thing is that recovery is YOUR journey. There is no professional, recovered person, or anyone else who can tell you what recovery looks like for you. So take charge of your own narrative, while making sure that you’re not deceiving yourself

    Action precedes motivation. I used this phrase to get up at five in the morning to run 5 miles. My simple goal was just to put my running shoes on and take one step on the pavement. The rest took care of itself.

    FYI. Don’t start a million new things. Focus on one thing until you master it and then can start handing stuff off on employees of some sort. THEN take on new stuff. Nobody has a million hours in the day and you’ll quickly wear yourself out and get burnt out

    Joy is Christ. The fruit of the Spirit is not dependent on circumstances. That's first. I will say that healthy habits have helped me to be a generally happier person more in tune with the Holy Spirit. Jesus said to love your neighbor AS yourself. Taking good care of yourself physically, emotionally, and spiritually allows us to do the work He plans for us and to care for others from a place of abundance rather than deprivation. The secular self help books and diet industry encourage us to make our bodies our gods rather than God's gift to be used to glorify him. 1 Corinthians 10:31 "So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God."
