so much D in that small rig. SO many kelvins we can see your sweaty pits. Nice. $999 worth every cent i bought 10 from your affiliate link to give to average youtubers
Softbox has specular highlights and sudden shadows, the Latern just rolls from highlight to shadow nicer. Softbox gives a harsh angular face, Lantern gives smooth teenage girl skin.
But the lantern also looks less like an “external light source”. Honestly (especially for photography) I do like the softbox look more than the lantern one. Feels more “pro” visually lol.
The lantern did look just a tad smoother, but the umbrella looked fine for what you are doing in your studio. The softbox was not terrible and without comparison between the other two, no one would likely complain - after all, lighting that fits into tight spaces is better than no lighting at all.
I’m not interested in lighting, but I watched your video, and have been watching your other videos. I think I’d probably watch a video of you cooking dinner. Well done bro! PS I’m subscribed on my other channel 👍🏼
Well that Smallrig lantern is the first time your skin tones looks really healthy, like not just-got-in-from-a run healthy, but heroic film star healthy.
Why are you not an actor?!! You’re so funny! I don’t even care what you’re doing I just love watching you. I like the lantern but if you can raise it up a little higher it might be even better.
Lantern gives the "reflected flash" vibe. I would dig it, I always liked photos I took in poor people's homes with a reflected flash from their ceilings
If you take the grid off of the soft box the light will be less direct and softer. It would be a closer comparison to the lantern. I agree that having the ability to adjust the warmth/coolness of the lantern would be nice. But, it is a very cool piece of lighting. You might even be able to get a nice tan over the winter for spring/summer. LOL! Have a great week!
The grid removal doesn't make the light softer. Many people confuse this, and also think a diffuser does the same. This would only be true if it were bouncing off light surfaces that were very close by like a ceiling or wall that it's almost rubbing against. The grid is to stop the light spread at the sides so parts of the background aren't affected by it. It has no bearing on the subject in the middle of it.
@@ArcanePath360 Yeah, got ya... The grid focuses the light into a smaller area rather than allowing it to spread out more. But, wouldn't that also make it less harsh?
Grids destroy shadow quality, and softbox shadows are pretty bad to begin with. A lensed light is the solution to efficient and controllabe spread and they work well with barndoors and projection.
@@charliejg No. In effect it isn't focusing the light. The light that reaches the subject is the same. Think of it in terms of putting blinkers on a horse. The horse doesn't see any better dead ahead, it just blocks it's periphery vision. It's the same concept. The point of grids is to cut the peripheral light spill so it doesn't bounce around and is more controlled. It's useful if you have different coloured lights illuminating a background and you don't want it to interfere with that. That said, it all depends on the situation. In a small room with the light next to a white reflector of course removing the grid will make it softer.
@@aristotle_4532 Nonsense. It isn't the grid that destroys "shadow quality" whatever that means. It's mis-use of a gridded soft box, or choosing one that's too small for the job. Typically when it's far away you effectively reduce the size of the light source, and thus create harsher shadows. Replacing it with a small light with barn doors on it will be even worse. It would be like a spot light. Also a soft box with a grid isn't meant for video use, at least not on it's own. You would need a fill light(s) unless you were going for dramatic effect and deliberately wanting light spill to be kept to a minimum for subject seperation. The biggest thing that affects shadows is the size of the light source/box.
I like your mellow presentation. The lantern is good for not crushing the black in your hair, giving it good detail. The softbox with the grid was good in that it made the background darker. All personal tastes, so there's that. Thank you for the test.
Lantern was better, but was it $899 better? I don’t know about that… and 5600K looked better. Warmer and nice, pleasing colors. Made you look younger, yes, it definitely did.
You can spend much less on a lantern thanks to the power of the internet. I spent $63 on mine (Glow 31" Quick Ball Lantern Softbox with Deflection Disk - apparently currently unavailable on Amazon but very well made and effective) and found that I like it much more than my softboxes or umbrella.
Awesome! I totally agree that the lantern light approach is the best, and I got hooked on lanterns after getting one of the household ones…and after realizing it lets you shoot from multiple angles, with light in same position, was super convinced then!
Thank you for making this video enjoyable to watch, trust me when i say watching most of these review videos is equally annoying as making them… probably
Lantern wins. Soft box 2nd, I think. Hadn’t watched one of your vids in a while. YT fed me this one, and watching it was totally nostalgic. The music, your voice and delivery. Funny and useful. SmallRig makes good stuff.
That's a major upgrade. Everything looks fantastic now. You now have 'mood' lighting - don't think of any one way as "better" but rather a way of conveying different parts of the story telling. Your living room seems now ready to accept the UFO and aliens if that's what you want. Variety in lighting is what you can explore - well done.
Use a full CTO gel to match the lamp in the background... Good ole fake for the 3000K NOT bi-color led. Good Day! oh yeah, the lantern is my pick as it's the softest light on your beautiful mug!
Lantern by far the best and gives schoolgirl skin. Umbrella next best. See if they will do you a deal on the lantern set up but the variable colour temperature version. Thanks for the entertaining vids.
Earlier I use to shoot foods and table top products using softboxes but I got awesome results by using a single lantern. Now 80% of my works are being done by using a single lantern.
lantern all the way - and smallrig stuff is awesome - I have smallrig cages for both D850's and love all my smallrig gear - need to get one of the lanterns now - damn you costing me $$$ 😵💫
Even though the SR 450D is 5600K only, your skin looks nicer, more natural and even warmer than the others. it appears that the quality of the light (CRI?) maybe is superior on the SmallRig?
Usually always agree with you. But I actually preferred you in the softbox over the umbrella. Umbrella < Softbox < Lantern. The Umbrella somehow made you feel out of focus or flatter ... It made it feel harder to know where to focus.. I also really liked the colour of the background lights when you lowered to 3k, but your face did look more detailed in the 5.6k as you recognised.
Lantern FTW. No contest. You can put a bare bulb (or smallish reflector) very close to the lantern and increase power to taste if you want to add a little hard light. I was taught to position the lantern either between the camera and subject for (single models or small groups) or in the middle of the room (when subjects are moving around) and always point it toward the ground. I never tried to point it at the subject like a soft box (mostly because of the size and weight of my lantern setup.)
I like the smallrig better. The light is softer, makes your lines look nice. There is also background lighting now and it places you in the spot. Umbrella boy was floating in the multiverse ...
Nice video, thank you... I am just looking for which light and modifier to upgrade to for my videos... I think the tree modifiers are quite the same... I can appreciate some difference in the light temperature than in the diffusing... It would be great to see the same light used in the lantern and with the umbrella to make the final comparison! :)
I got two umbrellas, and I don't even use them as I don't stream anymore. For Zoom calls I just use a LED desklamp and I switch color temperature randomly to annoy anyone watching
A curved front increases spread angle and makes the light softer for its size, but in lighting you need all types of light. Narrow softboxes only soften in one axis which you can control, square ones are semi hard and a lot more powerful than curved diffusers, reflected light is very unique in its power and spread, and the key should generally be a hard light, especially in longer shots. If you have something truly beautiful in front of the lens, you want hard light to show its form.
Yeah looks way better, and seems like camera has more Dynamic range than softbox and umbrella. Also has the 3d effect. The difference is there but some people could not even notice...
All he lights work pretty well, but the Lantern Light is dam sweet, at least for video, but when it comes to studio photography each of the lights have there own strength and weaknesses 👍😎
Btw: if u want more space cut a round small hole into the desk tabletop, and fit the lantern through that hole! I did that in my room to save space and it works! Just that the lantern will be a little close to you if you don’tmind that ia great. Also you have to cut into your desk tabletop:))
Lantern with smallrig definitely the best! Now you should study lighting.. your light needs to be at the other side and actually a little more on the side, so the dark side of the face is closest to the camera.
I think a lot this is going to depend on the lens you are using and what kind of sharpness/contrast you want in your final product. With a softer vintage lens with lower contrast you are may prefer the more direct light out of the soft box. I personally liked the amount of contrast it gave; although, I think that the lantern was more pleasing on your skin with its overall softness. Also, the lantern was giving a little top down directionality that I did not prefer. Really the only answer is to cut a giant hole in your drywall and put a 6' parabolic reflector on the other side of your desk, best of both worlds.
You cured my Fomo and I finally dumped the octabox from my cart on Adorama. My Aputure Lantern is wonderful. I have the 100x's because sometimes you want to be in 3000k. not because it's better (you do look better at 5600k and so do your practicala) just because sometimes I want to feel see that warm color around me. Get you some CTO gels and rig it inside the lantern somehow then you can have the color changing you need. if you have it on low power it shouldn't melt the gels. maybe.
Would love to have the lantern. Beats the hell out of the 60w incandescent bulb in the ceiling, with a sheet of tissue paper for difuser that I am using.

That lantern is life changing. It definitely suits your videos better to be honest.
Are you usually dishonest?

Not gonna lie, the best Smallrig 450D light review I've seen!
I REALLY ENJOYED THIS NEW CONTENT! Drones next please... See how many you can crash/lose/get arrested.

Very informative and entertaining. The first lighting video that had me cracking up. 😂 Thanks for the side by sides too.

I missed your humor - havent been here for a longer time. but now I am happy to be back!
4% was interesting because the room's ambient is brighter, yet warm compared to your 5600k key light. Could be worth experimenting?
Lantern wins. Soft box 2nd, I think.
Hadn’t watched one of your vids in a while. YT fed me this one, and watching it was totally nostalgic. The music, your voice and delivery. Funny and useful. SmallRig makes good stuff.
Your face looks super even and smooth at the end with 4% and clog.
For a tight budget, I would use umbrella. For a paid video shoot probably the lantern. Might only need one and a fill/back-fill light.
We deff need more stormy & breathing light vlogs, maybe a board meeting during a storm???

You’re becoming a canon boi. Welcome to the eos la familia
The Lantern is definitely the best for your video work! You look better with the lantern.
Lantern looks best. Downside(?) is the entire room is lit. 'Nother option is 2 umbrellas or softboxes to simulate 1 bigger light.

A young Tom waits - Epic !!
Lighting is a whole world in itself. I think MOLA would be your next leap
You and @The Angry Photographer are perfect! You should do one episode together.
Oh snap. I want the lantern light now. It also looks the best on you by the way. I want to see the 450B now!
I like your Gleason FE map on the wall.
I actually like the umbrella the best.
Intriguing comparison. Looks like great performance for the price. Perhaps Flat Earth Santa will bring me one for Christmas. Thank you for the video.
I appreciate your informal review of the Colbor light. I literally was just about to buy one as a light for traveling but now, no.
It's a good little light, just not great at max power.
Lantern looks best for sure!

Lantern, hands down. Thanks for the laughs.
It's so soft and diffuse with the lantern! It looks like you stacked 10 Black pro_mist filters on the lens.
The Lantern in every way! 5600k looks great too!
I use the Lantern but with a light control skirt, then you can shape the light and get rid of spill on ceiling and surrounding walls!
I bring lanterns to weddings because its the easiest way to get really good light in a room without thinking about placement very much.
Great video, as always :) P.S. Loving those JBLs :)!
You can also use the 450 as a boat anchor.
Wow... Impressed by the Lantern ! Much better than the other two...

changed umbrella to softbox with grid - so much better ;D
The lantern looks really nice, especially that last shot was beautiful. Get yourself a cheap CTO gel and then your color temps could be fixed.

Wait, you are using a $1000+ light setup.. Damn.. I imagined you were lit by a potato light bulb.. 😂
You're really Baker Mayfield aren't you!?
Looking at your sweating Pits I’m guessing it outputs 5600 watts of heat too😂.It definitely works well though from what i see.
Lantern light is awesome

hahaha amazing video keep up the good work. SUBBED!!!
Try a disposable grocery bag over an led panel vs what have you. Disposable grocery bag holds its own
Available Lights is the BEST! Like they did in that Decaprio Movie
All he lights work pretty well, but the Lantern Light is dam sweet, at least for video, but when it comes to studio photography each of the lights have there own strength and weaknesses 👍😎

Really informative and funny. So on the side of the cheap light.
I think that vigorously scrubbing your face with the rind of a Valencia orange would complement your skin tones....
You should be doing stand up comedy. Very funny guy. Nice job. Thx for the laughs.
Have a couple of SmallRig 220B's - really great lights for the money. I just wish the phone app/control didn't suck so badly. 😃
Lantern looked better and helped the background!
Yeah, Lantern for the WIN!
The larger light is diffusing so much better. Keep the huge lantern.
That lantern killed all those other lights. Like for real.
Try the brand new camping lanterns, they are just amazing... 😊
There's no such thing. Just the best for a specific result. That's all.
Why the video is so soft, it feels like 720p, I am watching in the 2k setting
You should try the “Lantern Umbrella Softbox” from Large Rig.
Lantern with smallrig definitely the best! Now you should study lighting.. your light needs to be at the other side and actually a little more on the side, so the dark side of the face is closest to the camera.
That would ruin my life, living room wise lol.
Get you some CTO gels and rig it inside the lantern somehow then you can have the color changing you need. if you have it on low power it shouldn't melt the gels. maybe.
Lantern for the win.
Would love to have the lantern. Beats the hell out of the 60w incandescent bulb in the ceiling, with a sheet of tissue paper for difuser that I am using.
Go to Chinatown and buy a Chinese paper lantern. Get a big one. Sometimes they come with the socket and lamp cord, but you’ll probably prefer to make your own. It’s cheaper. Then spend a little (or a lot) on an LED bulb that fits a standard socket.
@@MarcosElMalo2 Cool idea. Thank you.
Enlight us Cassey, green lantern boi!
we can see your hair with the lantern, previously it was a piece of charcoal.
I mean the softness is very close but your skintone did look a bit better on the expensive light.
Lantern is best, particularly from further back.
The lantern for sure.
LOL. Kasey got abducted by alien overlords at 7:53
Any recommendations for decently bright, soft, USB-C LED light with all the kelvins to go on the camera? I'm looking at SmallRigs M160 but not sure it's bright enough.
First comment. Awesome. Thanks Kasey.
SmallRig RC 450D I like it
