Great video. Sometimes we forget something that is so simple to some is major to others. When I was a child, I was at the dr office and a guy came in that had his battery explode in his face because of taking the positive cable off and his wrench shorted out on metal, causing sparks on a leaking battery and as you put it KAPOW.

People seldom check the acid level in the battery, and top it off with distilled water if needed. You always want to keep the plates inside the cells covered with the acid mixture, but not filled to the top, just covering the plates. Charging it during the winter a couple of times is also a good practice. A full day on a trickle charger is usually enough to top it off. Never let a lead acid battery get fully discharged. Even if you can recharge them, they won't last very long. Lead acid batteries produce a little hydrogen gas when they are being charged. Once, decades ago, a man drove into a tire shop where I was working. He jumped out of his Corvette saying that the battery inside the car had just exploded. A connection must have come loose and created a spark, causing the hydrogen at the top of the plates to explode. He was lucky that none of the sulfuric acid got on him. We helped him sop up the acid, and installed a new battery. Wear eye protection when working on batteries. If any acid gets on you, wash it off with water as fast as possible.
Yeah I guess people like you and I that works on equipment a lot and watches great informative small engine repair channels like Tom Doby repair assumes that everyone knows as much as we do about small engine repair etc. It's good to have videos that goes back to the basics just for people that are young and just starting out or people that's just not to mechanically inclined. I use carrage bolts so I don’t need 2 wrenches to take it out. Then I put the red battery protector spray. Kapow !!!!

it was a battery tester, you can get them anywhere they sale auto products

We switched over to TSC battery for several reasons, low cca batteries are not what I want to put on a consumer equipment 😮
Hey tom,when i tunn the key my riding mower does nothing,battery is good, jumped the starter and it works, the fuse is good,even put in a new ignition switch,also put on a new solenoid and still nothing happens when i try to turn it over,i really your help on this one, i also checked the saftey switches that i could find,its a huskee riding mower, Thank you for all of your videos to help us novices out!
@@brianblock-ul6re sounds like a bad ground, follow the negative cable to where it grounds and clean it, also make sure the blades aren't engaged

@@TomDobyMowerRepair no I thought the battery had finally went out on me but it was a wire that a rat had chewed through going to the stator not letting the battery charge. I think the battery was still good

The most janky I have ever seen on a battery was mechanics wire twisted tight to make a connection.... LMAO
