EICR in an empty property part 1 | Typical 1970s installation. (19)

  • Today I'm carrying out an EICR on a property for a landlord who actually cares about electrical safety! After finding various faults along the way it was nice to fix while I was there and then get some results. When carrying out an EICR it's often easy to get carried away with fixing repairs while you're there, especially when you know they'll impact on the final condition report. With the installation of a new consumer unit on the cards it was necessary to check all cables and accessories throughout, as it should be required before the upgrade of any consumer unit.
AS USUAL GUYS THIS VIDEO IS FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY AND NOT TO BE TAKEN AS ANY KIND OF TRAINING OR EDUCATIONAL PRESENTATION. AT ALL TIMES I AM IN FULL CONTROL OF THE INSTALLATION AND THERE IS NEVER ANY RISK TO PERSONS OR EQUIPMENT. ELECTRICITY SHOULD BE GIVEN THE FULL RESPECT IT DESERVES.

Thanks for a really good video. If diyers had stayed away from it, it would have been good by the standards of the day, apart from the bonding issue. The MK gear looks like 1960s. Putting the doorbell on its own circuit is a bit crazy: I have always thought it bad practice to have only one lighting circuit in any dwelling, however small.

Those MK fittings have got to be early 70s, my parents old house had them ripped out during a re-wire in 1983 !

Even earlier - my first house (new) was in 1974 and had MK Logic throughout.

  • @Umski

Looks a lot like the wiring and fuse box my parents still have but they have even fewer fuses - eek :o As much as I would like them to have it checked out properly it's sometimes a case of 'if it ain't broke' and 'there's nowt wrong with it' unfortunately with them :(
Looks like a pre-pay meter there (maybe with Smart function) - shouldn't mix the two up particularly in your trade ;) Your comment at the end about the landlord leaving it to your judgement to trust you gives me reassurance - shame you're not further south!

A gas boiler in a bedroom??? How someone thought it would be a good idea? Apart for the obvious when it's running, you know something that burn natural gas in a room where you sleep, what could go wrong.

5:50 BG really make me laugh with their sealing crap. MOCOPA requirement is for seals with identifiable imprints on flags OR a temporary sticker and a report to the DNO... two seals and two stickers should do it because we're BRITISH GAS and we make the rules!

Also, did the supply come back on from the meter without you having to press a button? If so that's a pretty serious mistake by L+G with the original (and generally twatting horrible) E470 meter.
