“Tennessee Whiskey” was first recorded by David Allan Coe for his 1981 album of the same name, and then by George Jones, who took it to No. 2 on the country chart in 1983.

One of David Allan Coe's biggest hits was "You Never Even Call Me by My Name". It's a huge hit in bars. Bar crowds love singing it, especially the last verse.. The bar crowds even added their own little chant to part of the chorus.
Another big hit by him is "The Ride". I don't want to spoil a specific detail about that song, but I'm not sure if you would catch it otherwise.. Maybe look up what the song is about after, if you don't catch it? Assuming you ever listen or react to it, of course.

Britt....you are really a perceptive young woman. The way that George could move from high to way down low was why Waylon Jennings once said "if all country singers had a choice, they would all wish they had a voice like George Jones." George's voice was his instrument.

The dude is David Allen Coe! He sang an iconic country song that truly crosses genres, not because of the sound (it's old school sounding country) but because of it's humor and the way it lends itself to sing-a-longs. Anybody can and everybody does sing this one - there's even a chant that crowds made up to go along with it! It's the original "everybody in the bar sing-a-long song" - you gotta give it a listen. BTW, DAC is a great song writer. He wrote This Bottle for George Jones and wrote The Ride about Hank Williams - great country songs. But the dude is rough and served serious time in prison - the true "outlaw country singer".

Holy crap, that's David Allan Coe on stage with George?? He's the one who originally recorded the the song, a few years prior.
I've never seen them together before.. George Jones kinda popularized the song, but I would always listen to David Allan Coe's original version when I owned his greatest hits CD about 10 years ago. In my early 20's, late teens.

I waited hours in the rain at a county fair in Wisconsin once to see George Jones. He was late and we were wondering if he would even show up, they called him no show Jones. But he did show up, did not give an encore performance and was still worth the wait and was even better in person. I don't know if anyone sales "strawberry wine" commercially, I grew up drinking it and I have family members that make homemade strawberry wine and muscadine wine. They are both very sweet and are also used quite often in desserts especially with truffles, this wine is also commonly used in events such as weddings, anniversary party's and the like; they also carry a pretty hefty punch as an alcoholic beverage. lol 🤣🤣
I wonder if you'd be interested in listening to another legendary female artist "Shania Twain - You're Still The One [Live in Las Vegas 2014]" this woman has a fantastic stage presence, and she definitely left her mark on the country music industry.

I love that you were able to feel good about introducing your friends to Chris Stapleton.
I was in a similar situation when Lady Gaga sang the Anthem a few years ago. I'm a huge Jazz fan, especially the songs considered "America's Songbook".
I was living in Louisiana, and most of my friends didn't share my affection for Jazz. They listened only to Country, (Which, of course, I love as well).
When "pop star" Lada Gaga was announced as the singer of the Anthem, they were all shaking their heads, saying, oh hell... that's gonna ruin it.
Being a Jazz fan however... I've heard Gaga singing Jazz, originally in a duet with legend Tony Bennett. If you don't know, she's probably a better Jazz singer than pop, (but Jazz don't pay the bills as well).
I told them for a month leading up to it, "Just wait, she's gonna blow you away". You just don't know how good she actually is.
When she finished... they were silent. Gobsmacked... Just as I imagine anyone hearing Stapleton for the first time this past Sunday.

If you want Strawberry Wine, and you love a good story telling song...Check out Deana Carter (Pronounced Deena) singing her mega hit, "Strawberry Wine"... It was a song that they said would never make it on country radio... It is too long... It is a ballad... Subject matter... You name it... Deana proved that if the song is good enough, and tells a good enough story, country radio WILL play what the fans want to hear... You might also enjoy another of her hits... So, Farm Aid is a yearly event put on by Willie Nelson (the first one was 1985, and its still happening). It is to raise money for struggling family farmers. It is an all day event so there are a bunch of acts performing. They all know each other, so you get a lot of guys jumping on stage to join in on a song or two. You get to see a lot of collaborations that were never recorded and you will never see again. It's one of the best parts of an event like that. They haven't announced the location for this year's event. That should happen late spring/early summer.
