- In the early 1940s the Nazis controlled Paris- but even they were terrified of a depraved maniac whose body count might have been as much as 150. The cops wanted him, the Nazis really wanted him, but this highly educated psychopath wasn’t so easy to catch.
This is the story of the man who became known as Dr. Satan, and it’s arguably one of the most messed up tales we’ve ever told.

To be fair to those guys, they where dealing with utter chaos in the aftermath of the german occupation and subsequent liberation.

@@clangnk3504 ya seeing that they should've had a recent picture of him and not some sketches he should've been able to been identified even with a beard by his eyes or height and other descriptions. I'm guessing cops in those days didn't get payed much so work wasnt as methodical as it is now

And the scariest part is that psychopaths will always come and go. They aren't always serial killers, but they are also businessmen and politicians.
The scariest part is that the more society learns how to spot these people, institutionalizes watching how these people behave in school, then acts like they'll do absolutely nothing wrong in adulthood amazes me.

psychopath is not an official diagnosis. Even the prefossinals can't agree on wherever generalized labels apply or not.
IMO, generalizing is a mistake. Doesn't address context/specifics enough. Most people are close minded and in denial statistically. The truth is we're all monsters. The deluded people claiming the moral high ground are simply ignorant of the killers they create from their own ignorance.
The frontal lobe is responsible for fear, among other things. The fact that he wasn't even slightly afraid of dying meant his frontal lobe wasn't working at all

Not necessarily, there are many other reasons why he may have been so comfortable with death. Having murdered so many people, he likely didn't put much value on life to begin with. Once captured he may well have viewed death as a preferable alternative to imprisonment and people prying his brain. He may even simply have seen his own death as a necessary reckoning for the deaths he caused, like a gambler who accepts his luck eventually runs out

That is one of the most incredible stories I have ever heard. At so many points incompetence compounded by further incompetence conspired to shield him from justice for so long, until he finally got what he deserved.
He really did get dealt a perfect hand, being a WW1 vet, got him through the 20s, being a doctor got him through the 30s and being a psychopath got him through WW2. Definitely in the top 5 known psychopathic serial killers.

There was a movie about a serial killer in Paris during the occupation called Night of the Generals, hunted by the French police, but (spoiler) in the movie, the killer was a German General played by Peter O'Toole. Really good movie.

Quite frankly it was only by sheer luck that he even survived WW1 and being gased. Apparently he only got a very little whiff of Mustard Gas or he would have died and agonizing death. Some people don't know that a Generation of young French men were killed in WW1, so him surviving is beyond Luck.
French men had a 16% chance of being killed in WW1, and a 70% chance of being wounded.

Not surprising he was this likable along among people at the time. Most serial killers are charismatic and liked by strangers.
It is actually quite common for psychopaths and narcissists to become doctors. Having that kind of power over someone is an ego trip. Its been shown that most psychopaths are in positions of power (CEO, Manager, Doctor etc.) because they are excellent at manipulating their surroundings to get what they want.
VERY IMPORTANT: Psychopaths and Sociopaths are still people, people who are suffering from a legitimate psychological disorder. They are not inherently bad people unlike what most tv shows might tell you. It is a personality disorder, one that can be treated for. The example in this video is a tragic example of poor understanding and bad resources allowing a child to grow up to be a killer.

I am surprised that I had never heard about this guy before and I have a keen interest in WWII. My parents also had an interest in France and Paris in particular. You would think that some book or documentary along the way would have made mention of a serial killer at work in Paris during The Occupation by the Germans, but I can't recall any such mention. He certainly was a complex character of high intelligence but also a risk taker due to failures to conceal his activities properly, and this is evident all through his life and his numerous run-ins with the justice system. I am surprised that they didn't keep his brain for further studies post execution.

Death in the City of Light is a great book about this killer. The police were hunting him when the allies were fighting the Nazis in the liberation of Paris. When he was tried he claimed he was a resistance operative of a mythical resistance group known as Fly Tox.
There is an English made movie from 1957 titled "Seven Thunders" which is set in Marseilles, France during WWII and involves a French doctor who poisons people who come to him thinking he has an escape route they can use to leave the country.
This is the wildest story I’ve ever heard. It needs to be made into a movie.

My great uncle was a detective in France during the occupation. When he was commanded to supply the Gestapo with the names and whereabouts of Jews in the city he warned all of them to leave at once and he did the noble thing, he gave a list to the Gestapo of all the Communists and Communist sympathizers. He deserved a medal for that alone

@@chrisd2051 I feel the same way. My great grandfather died in a POW camp "medical" wing. I have the letter they sent to my great grandmother that stated he died of "sickness" from his wounds. They were about to repatriate his body when the war ended. The camp was located in what became East Germany, she pleaded with the Communists to repatriate his body and they dragged their feet until he was finally buried on French soil in 1960 a full fifteen years after the war ended. So I have a unique hate for Communists and National Socialists
