Sonic Colors DS - Sonic Was Always Good

  • I find it odd that people that hate the Wii Colors, and complain that it's mostly 2D, often say they like the DS game more. Which is a purely 2D game. I don't get it.
    Something I only noticed while editing the video. A significant portion of the playtime in this game is spent using color powers. Much more than the Wii game. Some levels feel like you barely get to play as Sonic. Might contribute to why I don't find this game as fun.

    I think the reason that there are "alternate" versions of the same game is because you want to aim at two different platforms but you need to share as many assets as possible between both of them; stage drafts, soundtrack and plot is something that you can copy and paste from the Wii to the DS easily; also marketing budget. The DS clings to the Wii's marketing budget and you save money instead of trying to market two different games.

    • @radiokunio3738
      @radiokunio3738 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +25

      Yes and no, I actually feel like "alternate" games end up cutting into each others profit. As a kid I had Sonic Colors DS first, so when I asked my mother for the Wii Version, she whould say "I thought you already have Sonic Colors".
      But if it was called "Sonic Rush 3" or whatever, the average person can easily distinguish between the two games and buying both of them is no longer "Redundant".

    This game is the sole reason why I want a Modern-style 2D Sonic game. Imagine this game with the trick system, no Wisps and Hideki Naganuma as sound director. Imagine the skips you could pull with the air-boost. Imagine being able to stomp, or homing attack reliably in Rush or Rush Adventure. I dare say we would have literal peak on our hands.

    I don’t think this game is best viewed as a companion piece, but really as a game that can serve as a completely fulfilling and alternative take on ideas that also are in the Wii game with the same name!

    I enjoyed hearing your take on this game! I disagree that the game lacked an identity comparative to the Wii version, especially with the plot. I thought the writing was overall stronger, and I really enjoyed that most of Sonic’s friends were incorporated into the story. I always think it is weird when there is a story where there is a major world event, like Robotnik building a massive space station and swearing he’s good, and major characters that would get involved are seemingly absent. It made more sense to me that the friends would also be around investigating the problem compared to the Wii version.

    I think why i like this game more than the wii Sonic colors despite being a pure 2d game from start to finish is that it isn't trying to be something it isn't unlike the wii version. That game is only a 3D Sonic game in segments and it felt like the 2D segments were just filler, whereas the DS version is a fully 2D game, and it feels more focused in its level design because of that. At least in my opinion

    • @lauraikoko
      @lauraikoko 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      that is literally unfair,who are you to decide what the game is? if the developers want the game to be 3D with 2D parts in it then it is 3D,you can't do anything about that.

    • @jeriahrosen101
      @jeriahrosen101 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @lauraikoko i never said i decide what a game is. I don't mind 2D segments in 3D Sonic games or any game, for that matter. I do consider Sonic Colors a 3D Sonic game. I just kinda don't like how colors handle the 2D sections and how much it overstays it's welcome. The platforming is basic and doesn't have a sense of speed too often. I like how Generations and Unleashed handled 2D segments because they aren't too long and have a good flow with the 3D segments. If you like that, that's great. People can like what they like, but personally, it's just not what im into. The Mario Galaxy games and Odyssey have 2D segments, and i love those games, but they don't overtake their identity as 3D platformers. That's what i think Colors misses the mark for me.

    Many years ago my PC wasn't good enough to run Dolphin at acceptable speeds, and I didn't have a Wii to play Sonic Colors. All I had was the DS version on DeSmuME, which I played a lot back then, I even 100% all red rings and Chaos Emeralds.
    It was cool, but felt very Sonic Rush, and it wasn't "the real Sonic Colors". I remember it had a story with other characters in missions, but at the time I didn't gave it much thought. It's been more than a decade since I completed this game, and I've since found a new appreciation for this DS version. The Special Stages of this game is in my Top 3 favorite Sonic Special Stages. Sometimes I boot this game just to play them.

    The most fascinating thing about this game is that it has two different wisps from the main game (and is missing two more)... They have the Burst Wisp and the Void Wisp instead of Frenzy, Hover, Cube, and Spike. It feels like some kind of alternate universe, or like version exclusive Pokemon or something. They even had Burst in the 3DS version of Generations as a reference to how it only showed up in the handheld game.

    I agree that its not Rush 3 for all the reasons you said, but I like this version way more than the Wii version, and how could I not? It uses the same beautiful engine the Rush games used and that is all the reason I needed to play it.
    What holds it back is all the modern elements they try to shoehorn in, especially the homing attack. The Rush homing attack was so perfect because of how unrestricted it was with your movement. Colors DS just brings the homing attack back to square one and its disappointing how we havent seen a homing attack like in Rush since those games.

    A lot of your questions about the development of Colors could be answered with the theory that is likely real that both versions of Colors were originally the port of Generations for both the Wii and DS but was eventually decided to be turned into an original game. They do share a lot of similarities, most of the time Sonic games that are development around the same time are almost nothing alike, as seen with Shadow, 06 and Secret Rings, but you can still see a lot of Generations' concepts on Colors.
    One example of this is how the story of Colors DS does the same thing as Generations where every character is involved in the story, in Generations there was at least an excuse as for why everyone was dragged into the white void but in Colors, there is no reason as for why everyone decided to be there at the same time, it makes more sense if you consider that they already had the assets and the missions, they just changed up the dialogue to fit better, and the Nega Mother Wisps is probably an early version of Time Eater they decided not to waste, it could explain why the 3DS version of Generations is so barebones, they already used their foundations, ideas and time on the DS version of Colors so the 3DS version had to be a rush job and a last minute decision to not leave the 3DS version behind.

    Ubisoft was especially bad with this, their King Kong game based on the Peter Jackson film had *six* completely different versions (GBA, DS, PSP, 2005 phones, 5th generation home consoles, and the Xbox 360), and all of them struggle for attention.

      As someone who played a lot of the DS version growing up, it all boils down to the DS version having a better story and better level design. Not to say Wii's level design is bad, but the DS' level design has a better flow.
      You boost, home attack, stomp on a rail, do a wall jump. It becomes this series of little actions that connect one on another non-stop. The level design was built to maintain that pacing. I reminds me of Wii's Unleashed day time stages level design.

      I think it had to do with your ability transitioning between 2D and 3D. Atleast for me it's hard to transition between 3D and 2D in the middle of a level, especially if I'm trying to get a certain time.
      With Super Paper Mario you switch between 2D and 3D, but time isn't a concern so I can afford a few seconds of null input to while I transition.
      Though this is also likely due to autism and having a more "Monotropic" mindset. Monotropism is the tendency to focus on a single subject or topic at a time, you tend see that more in OCD or autistics.
      Which is partially why I prefer SA1 over SA2, because you play as the same character though out each campaign, instead of switching characters for each level. In layman's terms SA1 is for autists (monotropism) and SA2 is for ADHD (polytropism).

    I have a similar problem with Star Wars Battlefront Elite Squadron, the DS and PSP games play so completely differently that it makes you wonder why even both trying to market them as being the same. Especially since the DS game has more plot than the PSP game, but the PSP game is closer to the original Battlefront 3.
    This isn’t even mentioning how had Battlefront 3 come out you would have a top down DS game somehow marketing itself as the same as the massive multiplayer Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii game. Speaking of the Wii I genuinely wonder how they were going to make it work on Wii when the 360 and PS3 are significantly more powerful.

    About your argument on Colors DS not being Rush 3 because of the new additions to the moveset that originated from Unleashed, remember that Unleashed came out after BOTH Rush games. It's kinda similar to how New Super Mario Bros. added wall jumping, pound grounding, and triple jumps to 2D Mario when they were initially introduced in 3D Mario. So if we got a proper Rush 3 instead, they probably would have still added all these new moves.

    People don't dislike 2D in 3D Sonic because it's 2D, people dislike 2D in 3D Sonic games because more often than not it's used as filler content, typically with slow, blocky, Marble Zone-like level design (especially in Colors where chunks of stages are reused multiple times to artificially increase the length to 6 acts per zone). In the Rush games and Colors DS, its actual level design, with slopes and alternating paths and a proper sense of speed. Same goes for the rest of Colors DS compared to original Colors, there's generally far less filler garbage.

    • @lauraikoko

      uhhh...the reason the 2D sections in boost games are slower is cause they're supposed to be easier to design cause they don't need to be as long since they're slower while the 3D sections need to be MASSIVE because of the fact that they're designed to be played for speed,it also allows for more genuine platforming cause of the slower pace. and no,the 2D parts aren't pointless filler cause they have a REASON to exist. what you mean by filler garbage isn't actual filler,it's called padding,and the 2D sections aren't padding cause they have a purpose to exist. if you want to know what is actual padding in colors wii,go watch pariah's last video.

    (Sigh) I really wish I got this version instead of the Wii version. At least I made sure to avoid Ultimate like the plague. And the fact I made that decision even before figuring out the... Functionality of it makes me even more glad. I don't need another... THAT game in my life. Though, then again, I suppose Scarlet and Violet are actually that. I can't believe I live in a day and age where I'm actually comparing a Pokemon game to one of the most infamously broken games of all times. How is that possible?

    I also don't think it's "Rush 3" but honestly this might ne my nostalgia for the main game but I think I might like this more than at least the 1st Rush game however I do view it lower than most boost titles in general & Rush 1 obv has the "better" story imo. I would've liked to hear u speak on the 1st "final boss" as the super sonic 1 comes off as an extra thing that feels barely connected to the rest of the game in some ways. I like to view both versions as 2 sides of the same coin whether it be story stuff or or gameplay & SEGA weirdly seems to treat it that way too. I wonder wut another Rush style game wit the new stuff added in C-DS would be like. I feel it would be great but this was the last of that style so oh well.

    I have nothing to say about Colors DS so here's a long drawn out anecdote memory I have related to it
    It's funny you talked about the "same name different game" shit because I remember after I got super into Colors Wii I asked around my school to see if anyone else in my class had played it [I was in 5th grade so it wasn't THAT cringy and pathetic but if I tried it in middle school proper I would have gotten the shit kicked out of me lol]
    Anyway the one kid I found who said anything other than "no" said he had it on DS and loved it and he became my best friend for a few years [until I realized he was a dick and I was only going to his house because he had all the cool consoles and I only had a Wii] and the first time I went over to his house on his birthday [where I got him Sonic and the Secret Rings, the special edition from Target with the Archie comic DVD] I played Colors DS and thought "what the heck is this" [I would have thought "what the fuck is this" but I was 11 and not allowed to think "fuck"]
    Poor fat bastard kid must have been as confused as I was when I visited the Sonic Unleashed website after getting stuck at Eggmanland in the Wii version and saw Empire City advertised on the site's map of the planet. "What's that man why isn't that in my game? This sucks..."

    Controversial take here. But I like the DS version way more than the Wii version and I think it's the best out of an Rush Trilogy; even though it doesn't have the Rush title in it's name. It has far better level designs, there's no filler levels that you have to do in order to proceed and the Wisp are handled much better here. Also I prefer how it handles it's story & characters there than the Wii version. As far as part of Rush Trilogy, it does many thing right for me. It doesn't have any obnoxious levels and terroble bosses that Rush has and it doesn't have pacing issue to where you need to upgrade stuff to progress and sit on an long ass cutscenes like Rush Adventure has. So yeah. No offense my guy. But DS is awesome and it's one of my favorite Sonic games in general. Next to Generations.

    I find your logic on why this isn’t Rush 3 very flawed. Cause saying that this game adds, changes, or removes features from the Rush games makes it not a Rush game would mean that logic would apply to other games like the Advance series, which changes the controls in it’s different entries, along with having different mechanics in each game. Yet, Sonic Advance 3 is still apart of the Advance trilogy

    • @Pariah6950

      It's because it specifically removes mechanics from the Rush games, and adds in mechanics from the non-Rush boost games. Rush as a subseries has its unique traits, which this game lacks. It shares more of its traits with other boost games. Unless we want to count Unleashed as a Rush game.
      Is this a Rush game, or just a 2D Unleashed/Colors?

    • @Zejgar

      All three Advance games are of the same genre and all three of them bear the name "Sonic Advance". This overrides all reasonable arguments about whether they can be considered Advance games or not.
      It is a funny thing to call this game Rush 3 because it looks like a Rush game on the surface, but there's just too many differences. It's like calling Colors "Unleashed 2", which I'm sure some people do, but it seems weird.

    • @joeker5208
      @joeker5208 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Pariah6950 to be fair though. The main mechanic of Rush is the Boost. The 3D games merely adapted that mechanic, and still go on to play like a Rush game even if it’s not a one-to-one and has its own unique mechanics. However, Colors DS uses the same engine as the Rush games, it’s main mechanic, and adds in it’s own mechanics. I see this is as no different than Advance 3 altering and removing features from Advance 2, like the boost state and trick system, and then adding in the team mechanic. But, to each his own I guess

      @@Pariah6950Rush adventure did the same thing. It added new features to the game and IT was using the rush engine. So this argument is already invalid, because just like sonic rush adventure did, colors ds added its own little features in the game. And if I remember in rush adventure, blaze was completely optional! You weren’t forced to play with Blaze! She was an optional character that you get to play as. All colors ds did was just remove her as a playable option!

    I think Sonic Rush Adventure sold poorly, which led to Sega to just make companion games of the main games. Colors, Generations, and Lost World also do this. Colors and Generations have alternate takes of the story, with Colors having "the best" because it had less of the crappy humor and more fanservice with all the supporting cast: but frankly, I think the DS version story is super dull, it makes the Rivals ones look better. How will you review the story? Separate videos or the same video?
    Wierdly enough, the Sonic Boom games are different. ROL its its own experience, while the 3DS titles are more metroidvania type of game. The stories aren't even the same despite having the same villai in Lyric.

      -Better story;
      -Better pacing (the missions are optional);
      -Better boss fights;
      -Better unlockables (Super Sonic playable is cool, but Infinite Boost after collecting all red rings in the DS version does the same thing. Also the Extras Gallery);
      -Better level design (in my opinion);
      -Secret Super Sonic boss fight (ending the Nega Wisp plot that was left unfinished in the Wii version).
      Also I appreciate this version for adding other characters in the zones. It made the parks feel more alive, you know, like a real theme park should be. In the Wii version it felt like Sonic and Tails were the only two people in there.

    I think it more memorable then the console version of colors, and it’s honestly more unique then Wii colors. Like starlight carnival is an actual zone compared to the console version.
    That and it has better storytelling and more characters than the console version.
