The Orange Pi RK3399 is a pretty extensive board for only US$100. For that you get 4G RAM, an RK3399 SoC, pretty much everything broken out and HDMI recording!
    But does it actually work?
    Find out in this video.

Now I remember why I never bother with Rockchip. Some flash tools, upgrade tools, shorting pads on the board. Allwinner just boots OS from SD card without any extra hassle, so much easier.

On the plus side, I have high hopes for this leading to more SBCs with HDMI in. Would really open up possibilities for the streaming market, especially for people who can't afford to buy an entire new PC just so they can get decent encoding with OBS.

Software support seems to be a problem for most of these boards. I have a rockpro64 with the same cpu which has a PCIe x4 interface. The PCIe port doesn't work as it should, I presume due to lack of software support. So now a waiting game has started for complete software/driver support. It sucks. That's why raspberry pi's are still king of the hill if you ask me. Less performance but solid software support.

Isn't it an issue with the open source community instead of the device maker? I mean, it's completely normal, that there are lot's of hardware features with no or unstable support, with any Linux on any device. In like 15 years of using Linux on servers and embedded devices, and like 6 years on the desktop, I yet have to see a situation, where there's nothing left to be desired regarding hardware support in a Linux installation.

    • @MickMake

One of the problems is with companies promising the world and not delivering. The Pine64 had this problem at the start, (but they’ve since fixed it).

Fairly typical. All these pi "clones" still fail to understand that it is the software that makes or breaks a good product. Even after all these years they are still focussing on the wrong areas.

Interesting overview, try one of the rock64pro images here ( latest kernel )
    github.com/ayufan-rock64/linux-build/releases
Let us know how it goes, I wonder if this board is borrowing from the Rock64 / other guys.

      Thanks mate.
A few people have been using NanoPi NEO4 images with success, (mixed).
A lot of the RK3399 based SBCs have identical designs, so you should be able to mix and match images.

Hardware great, much promise. Software abysmal. I've experienced that with another manufacturer. They released another board with better software support instead of fixing the drivers etc on the first one!

Is there a good way to pitch in and help make working software for the Orange Pi? Does anyone know what's really needed to do this for Orange and other vendors?

      Yes!
Go visit the Armbian forums. Igor is a great bloke and determined to bring some standardization in for ARM based SBCs.

@@BobPegram As Mick says pick a Distro and get on the forums. Ask questions ( alot of them ), As ive shown there are alot of people moving on these SBC's / SoC's, Just as a start you might want to look at this,
      opensource.rock-chips.com/wiki_Main_Page
RockChip has been pretty damn solid with a BSP ( Board Support Package ) that is getting very refined / bugs ironed out. With support from the community over all this is how this gets fixed. It was not long ago getting Arch Linux installed on the Rock64 was not doable easily, now as ive shown this board sings pretty much.
Also look on the link in my first comment,
      github.com/ayufan-rock64/linux-build/releases
There is alot of information here also, the Rock64/Pro forums are very active with cool people aiming to help out where they can ( ergo they dont bite )..
You have to give these things time, we dont need complainers we need people that do things, you will find this interesting but I had this very same conversation at the local makerspace here with people who purchase the latest boards then just moan when not spoon fed an OS to run on the bloody thing, clearly the boards are not for them.
Linux on ARM is still very much maturing and in a huge amount of flux with so many SoC's SBC's available, and yes I know Arm graphics support is awful but with freedrino and now Panfrost/midgard and Bifrost it looks like Mali on the RockChips is well on its way.

As always, the software seems to be unfinished. They can bash the hardware out in a week but software is simply missing. Sad.

Just enough effort to list the peripherals on the sales page. I figure these companies are operating like old console video game developers. "Let's rush everything we do for pointless arbitrary release dates that result in a continuous stream of sub par crap."
Thanks for showing the company's managerial ineptitude. It's just another overpriced window frisbee of a project.
