Not far from Seattle is the Olympic Peninsula, my favorite area in Washington State.
Lately I have been spending all my time in the city. so today I managed to find a free campsite out near Olympic National Park. The campground was Bear Creek Campground, a Department of Natural Resources site. There are many DNR campgrounds in this area. This one is a primitive campground near the Sol Duc River.
From there, I drove to Lake Crescent for a brief stop. Then headed to Madison Falls Trailhead. Which is located along the Elwha River. I then drove to Port Angeles to regain cell service.

My name is Scott and in 2015, I bought a Ram ProMaster City to live in. Even though I didn’t know much about RV’s and campervans, I set about building the van out as a minivan camper. And in April of 2016, I moved into my minivan full time.
Over the years, I’ve learned you don’t need to have a big skill set to build your own campervan. And that living as a minimalist and utilizing solar power can be a less expensive way to live. I’ve also learned that a minivan can be a very comfortable home.
Please follow along as I document my journey.

Scott...if everyone was as considerate as you this would be a wonderful world.
Aww, thanks Kat. There are a lot of really good people out there
Glad you didn't just stop to catch your breath. Wink, wink. Nudge, nudge.
The Japanese and their understanding of the benefits of Shinrin-yoku is spot on. We all need some greenery and nature in our lives which emphasises the importance of urban parks for city populations. Lovely scenery by the river!
Wow Scott you know how to find em absolutely beautiful. Well it’s coffee time. Soak up some rays be well my friend 😊
The adventure of Van life, you never know what today, tomorrow hold 😃
Excellent video! So many topics. I recently spent about 4 years in Portland living in a tent in the woods. As for grocery stores, I agree with you about Safeway but I did take advantage of their lunch plates. Fred Meyer was good for small purchases of meat from the meat counter. But WinCo was my favorite! I wish there was a WinCo in Austin.
Four years in a tent is cool
@@StaticCamperVan sometimes.
I guess this park is good when its really Hot because alot of Forest !Nice for a Good Chill👍☕☕☕☕🥶
The rivers stay cold, too
☕🌿🍁🏞️So refreshingly relaxing this drive through Woodlands you've taken us and then home-made soup...ah so Thankful for these Moments 🏞️🍁🌿☕
I've always heard that it's best to warm your vehicle at least long enough for fluids to distribute. Gorgeous place to hang out!
Yep, it’s always something! That about sums up life to me. 😅
All we can do is laugh
My parents and I owned the Log cabin Resort on the north shore of Lake Crescent. it's the most beautiful place in the state. You really should go there.
Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiveing Scott!! Thanks for sharing the video.
Thanks Rebecca
Love the area with all the nature around and such a lovely stream to end. Thanks for sharing. Stay well, and warm.
I watch you every day, love it! Everything you do is great! Thanks for being on here, take care!
Aww, Thanks Dyan
Gas was $2:65 here in Stephenville Texas today…I was pleasantly surprised.. at Walmart…later.. enjoyed our.visit
Super nice campground!! 🏔️
Scott, you make van life look easy!
For the most part, vanlife is easy
I call it nature therapy. 🌿🌲🍁🍃🍄☀️
Yes, it is beautiful there, but did I just hear the soft wisperings of the desert calling?
Nope. Haha
2nd one here from Canada.. ATB Scott 👍🙏
I was definitely born in the wrong country Scott, America is so beautiful. I'm struggling with my solar atm to much rain in the UK. Thanks for taking us with you on your travels buddy stay safe and happy 😁🙏💯🤟🚐🌲🌳🏕️🚐
Solar is a big issue for me right now, too.
10 years ago I was in the UK and I set my weather app to the town where I was staying.
When I got home it took me the longest time to realize I was looking at the wrong city on the app because the climate here in Vancouver Canada (in the same region where Scott is in this video, but on the Canadian side) and the UK is so similar 😆
So pretty there. Thank you for another day-in-the life…
Thanks for watching
*Beautiful!*
*Your videos are so peaceful/calming!*
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thanks Bonnie

You're welcome 🌹
The sound of a critter running over the top of your van definitely sounds like the typical squirrel ... those little buggers, lol.
I hope you have a happy Thanksgiving ❤Scott. Hugs from Maine
Thanks Tammy
What a lovely relaxing place where the water fall was.
👍My inlaws lived in the Nanaimo, BC area, for years. Beware of squirrels as well as the mice. They constantly had squirrel nests in their engine bays.
Love the Olympic Peninsula . I have camped at Lake Crescent before & there are so many beautiful places on the peninsula.
The view is beautiful❤
Hey Scott, next time you are over in Port Angeles, check out the yogurt at Grocery Outlet-- The brand is Graziers and it is whole milk and delicious! Thanks for the beautiful video of my "neighborhood"... You have a great cookstove there, don't think I have ever noticed it before. Thanks for another great video.
Thanks I will try out Graziers yogurt again, it’s been a while since I’ve tried it last.
That stove is very simple but has been the best stove yet. Here’s the video about it: th-cam.com/video/lsCcbvDp4ns/w-d-xo.htmlsi=SsfgS2Ci689PpqPL
My fave neck of the woods.
We've been there many years ago. So heavenly. 40 years ago. Happy Thanksgiving to you.
I greatly enjoy your videos especially in winter when are down south in our humoungous Promaster(!). You videos are a touch of home especially this winter wild camping in Nicaragua. I’m taking notes for next summer. Thanks for the good cheer.
Hey Thanks. I hope you are really enjoying Nicaragua
Ah what a Beautiful place ... all three of them ... good for my spirit too today. Thanks Scott 😺💜
Glad you enjoyed it
I lived in Port Angelos when i was in the 6th grade... And the one thing i remember about it was that it was COLD there... lol.❤
What a beautiful area and no trash, unlike the UK sadly
Thank you for another informative video. Your alternator may be going bad... you should carry a jump pack. I have replace the brushesin a few alternators and the worked a few more years, before I had to replace them. Bear Creek looks like my kind of camp ground. I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Thank you again for the chill video.
I hope you have a nice holiday as well. Thanks Anita
The Sol Duck river looks like a moving pond. It would be a nice place in summer to float along on an inner tube or air mattress.
With all that beautiful scenery the sound of a dog barking is not as aggravating as I thought it would be….even the sound of traffic doesn’t seem to be a problem 😊just beautiful there
I need some nature in my life too. Thank you for sharing your journey. Have a great week Scott.
Hopefully you can get out this week. Thanks
Wow the Olympic Peninsula is beautiful. I agree it's necessary to get out into nature and reset. There's something so refreshing about rivers and trees!
Breathtaking views and lovely relaxing waterfall sounds.❤️😘
Wow your really in the woods,no cell,Crest lake is Beautiful, also River!Waterfall is Beautiful, Awesome!👍✌️🤞👌🙌🙏🇺🇸💟✝️✨🌟🌻
Hi Scott great video I was sure wondering about mice where you were parked for the night glad you had no issues. Looking forward to the next episode
You really love nature and you make sure to soak up all the greenery surroundings, the rivers and of cause the hiking trails.
Wow that was a beautiful video. Thank you Scott.🐢🐕🌊🌺🌻🌈🌞💜✌️🐕🐢
Hey thanks for watching
Wonderful colours, loved this reel, so relaxing happy travels x
It looks like a great place to park and sleep in!
I love Port Angeles. It’s like being in the 1950’s to me and I love cities with downtown shops and restaurants.
Breathtaking views. Love this video. Thanks for it!
Hi Scott, I’ve missed you, you seem a little out of sorts , I guess! Maybe it’s just me. Stay safe and warm!💕 have a good Thanksgiving! 🥰🇺🇸
I was a little tired
Woohoo 1st one here
Hello Scott from NZ
⭐️
Aren't you ever afraid of any bear encounters? I enjoy your channel, so relaxing. Safe travels Scott.👍🎉
No Grizzlies in the Olympics, just black bears and they...for the most part, aren't aggressive.
Not likely to see a bear unless you hike inland.
Elwha River was just beautiful. Thanks for providing these breathtaking views.
Thanks Scott.
Beautiful nature
Dang I wish I could have spotted you in Port Angeles (where I live) I would have bought you a cup of coffee, oh well maybe next time.😊
I kinda expected to see you. I got a coffee at Country Aire and really enjoyed it.
Mice & Rats scare me as they can really damage your vehicle.. It looks like you have a great system set up just in case. Such a beautiful location.
Looks beautiful ❤
Forks is great love the olymipic mountains
Hi Scott. Looking at your video the sun looks very low on the horizon. How much current would that produce? Just a thought a small solar blanket, say 50watt placed on your dashboard and up against the windscreen so facing the sun directly would give you some good coverage and use up very little space. Also keep some sun off your dashboard. Just a thought.
Yes, solar is tough up North here. I have a folding panel that I have tried out set up like you are recommending. I found it generates almost no power through the glass. But it does help a little if I set it up outside
My oatmeal recipes-
I keep a bunch of small containers on the counter for my oatmeal and just add whatever extras I like that day such as dried chopped dates, frozen blackberries ,frozen blueberries, brown sugar, flax seed, ground flax seed, chia seeds and walnuts. Usually 2 things per day and I change it up. Try it you'll never get bored.
My plain Greek yogurt recipes-
In the smallest individual cup of plain Greek yogurt, just add 3-6 drops of concentrated lemon juice to taste and you get a mock sour cream that is 7 out of 10 for taste. Best part is it is fat free, high in protein, lots of probiotics, no sugar, and very low in salt and you can eat as much as you want and not feel guilty! It is actually very healthy for you.
Taco sour cream- I take the smallest cup of plain Greek yogurt and add just about a 1/2 tbs. of adobo sauce that comes in the can of smoked chipotle peppers. Just add more for a slightly smokie, spicy very flavorful sour cream for tacos. Trust me- it is game changing! And just as above it is very, very healthy for you, fat free, high in protein, no sugar, lots of probiotics and very low in salt. Eat as mush as you want!
Hey, great video. i really enjoyed seeing the nature, rivers in Washington. I have wanted to go up in the area where you are, but haven't been able to yet. Thank you for your video, coffee and adventure. The wooden boat festival is in Port Townsend I think in September. Someday!
Cody Wyoming is going to be 30's and colder.
I hope you find sun and have a great Thanksgiving.
Great video
I’m sure you know you could charge your house battery from your engine alternator. It just takes simple wiring and a battery separator. You can also add a switch in order to disable charging when you don’t want it.
It's not a viable option. I talked about this in a recent vlog. My engine is in really bad condition. There is a factory recall on the engine because they were built so poorly.
The Olympic peninsula is a godsend to everyone who lives in the "State of Seattle". I have relatives I visit who live in Port Angeles, and I am always sad to go back to Seattle. I love Madison Falls, 5 minutes from the parking lot, with everything you need. Magic.
Thanks for the rivers. I am a river person. I agree about needing the river.
Thanks for watching Sally
I am in Quartzsite. I went to the "market" where they sell dented cans and array of other stuff. They had yellow bird blue agave sriracha and the habanero 9.8 oz for $2.00. I bought the blue agave - knew habanero would be too hot. Came home and used on my burritos. Different but not bad. But will continue using it. Will have to check back later to see if they get different flavors in.
What an amazing deal!
Cool you have traps!🤩👍They like to go where its watm, and you never know if they Chew your Wires! Love to watch your Adventures and will be watching 💜 Have a Great 🦃 Thanksgiving ☕☕☕👍✌️🤞👌🙌🙏🇺🇸💟✝️✨🌟🌻
Wonderful videolog and gorgeous ending🎉
That area looks kind of Squatchy. Lots of sightings in that area.
I'm heading there this summer, camping in a tent (or maybe my car if too many bears) so checking out all the YT videos. Love your content! I'll be looking for neat places with some sun for solar panels!
Great vibe on this one....
You could have a bad ground or a draw on the battery that is killing your batteries prematurely. I would get a mechanic to look into that
It's unlikely since it only has happened once. I'll dig out my meter and get to diagnosing
What a beautiful camp spot. 😊 Also, I will be using your mousetrap idea. I have a fear of picking up a little grey tourist when I'm out van camping. So far I've just been using peppermint oil and sometimes a light source.
I'm so happy you were able to get out in nature and away from the hustle and bustle. It is always so refreshing. I have heard also that the sound of water, like the river or the ocean, can be healing to one's peace of mind and spirit. See ya soon!
I did put my lights out. Peppermint oil didn't work at all when I was in Arizona
@@StaticCamperVan Good to know! 😊
What bait do you use for your trap? I use peanut butter which they seem to like. And, with your Olympic wave heater, how much propane (cost) would you use say in an 8 hour period. I currently use my van propane stove with a flat cast iron plate with a six bladed fan sitting on the plate that operates from the stove heat.
I've used peanut butter on the traps but have found they work just as well without any bait. The traps are stuck down on areas that the mice walk over.
The Wave3 uses about a pound of propane every eight hours. I'm not good at math so maybe someone can break it down. I paid $2.80 a gallon at the last propane fill
@@StaticCamperVan so if on 8 hrs use then last about 5 days?
❤ Good Evening Scott 🌞🌻🌅Great park! Beautiful 😍 Can't beat $30 ayear for Camp!👍✌️🤞👌🙌🙏🇺🇸💟✝️✨🌟☕
That Bear Creek Campground sure looks nice, especially this time of year with fewer tourists. Will check it out in the Spring on my way out to see Forks. So enjoyed this video.
By the way, how do you entertain yourself in the van during this season of much shorter daylight hours and much longer nights.
I always carry a flashlight so the dark doesn’t affect my walks. Also I tend to cook much more in the winter.
It's always something. Lol
In sorry Scott.
Your ausome 🎉
I'm
Hi scott you've such A nice man there should be more people like you how nice would that be safe travels ❤ xx
Always look forward to your videos. Very honest perspective on your lifestyle. 👏 👏 👏
Thanks Robert
another great video....hope you are having a wonderful evening wherever you are tonight!
Thanks Patti. I'm currently in front of my heater
Don't blame you!!
Hello Scott, I really enjoy being on your nature trail walks with you. I work indoors and don't get enough nature therapy. And then there is your coffee chats. Coffee is my comfort beverage. I appreciate the way you make your own coffee to enjoy in your static coffee mug. You have the best Reliable arrangement for keeping warm with your propane heater. I can see that an electric heater might not work for you since your having minimal sun to support your solar power. I know you like Olympia and lake crescent is beautiful. Seems like in van dwelling life where you are there is a need to chase the sun from place to place. In an effort to get your batteries charged up. The Elwharriver is amazing. I like moving water that chants as it flows on its way. I buy whole milk yogurt too. Sometimes I add fruit to mine. I haven't grow tired of oatmeal yet but I do switch out and have creme of wheat or ralston wheat cereal now and then. Port Angeles is my kind of too.I shy away from big town and find places with populations of around 15000 friendliest. Big cities are stiff and sterile by comparison. Your very mobile dwelling smart. You know how to take care of yourself o. The road. I have had traveling jobs much of my life and learned what I needed to know to feel at Nome on the road. Like you if,I can,be warm enough and have a good cup of coffee I can nest and rest. A favorite quilt pillow and warm socks I can settle in and feel that that satisfaction of being home. I would prefer not to hear highway traffic when I park for the night. Sometimes its a trade off. Small airports without any major carriers are a favorite parking place for me. Generall they are quiet and little to no traffic after dark. Have you done that? Parking is often free there.
Interesting about parking at an airport. I don't ever park on private property though. I always park on a public street
Hello Scott, Airports are public access unless privately owned. Generally they are county or municipal opened and federally funded. The small airports without commercial carriers and without control towers are good places to park.
@jeanieirwin4747 I see. Thanks, but I wouldn’t be comfortable parking at one. I prefer to park on a street where there are lots of people around.
I'm a Hobo, wishing I had your van home because I am watching this video from the back of a Dollar General store!
Stunning rivers. So cool.
Thanks Dude!
Part of what you do is very appealing, what's it like during the holidays when you are on the road away from family and friends? I do think that having a channel like yours makes the isolation a little more bearable as you're not alone out there. Stay safe.
It’s not at all a lonely lifestyle. I have more free time to do what I want now. In the past, I worked through the holidays. Most of my previous jobs didn’t allow for time off even when we were sick.
Love these videos still
Thank you
@@StaticCamperVan I’m still doing the life up in the mountains in the Gold Coast hinterland in Australia. It’s the only place I can find peace at the moment. I’m a place called Witheren at a park called sharp park. Tomoro I will move into the town over the hill called cunungra for a week.
You would love the trails up here.
So peaceful and serene.. ❤
Gorgeous place!
🎵Down by the River🎶
:) THANKS MUCH for sharing! Loved it! I HAD to LOL as Gas prices are cheaper where you are VS State of Seattle area here, crazy! :( ENJOY and ALL the BEST! Cheers ! :)
Propane is considerably less out on the peninsula, too. I don't understand. Haha. Thanks Marty
Hi Scott,is there a story to your ‘static camper van’Title? When clearly it’s anything but.I’d of thought it was more of a wandering van 😃
I explain the name every now and then. But the explanation gets missed a lot, so I have a future video dedicated to the topic.
While I travel some to find better weather, I don’t travel nearly as much as a lot of vanlifers. For example, last year I drove 6,000 miles all year long.
I’m parked much more than I drive.
That dog is a new breed of dogs called ‘rooster dog.’ Is it morning? Is it night? Don’t know when to be quite.
The campsite is gorgeous. Lots of trees and beautiful rivers.
Haha
Thank you for another great video Scott! I love that you operate strictly on solar, and I would love to pick your brain in that a bit, somehow lol. I have a jackery, so that's a start.
I should have a solar walk-through video up fairly soon
Oatmeal is starchy.😇
Appreciated you taking us along on such a lovely walk by the river, into the woods, and the waterfall was a nice icing on the cake. And that it was all free! (which it is anyway in nature, ironically). Also, ironically, someone who grew up in the desert sun now finds his life in place[s] amongst the tall green trees of the great northwest. Where the sun often can't get to the solar panels you need to live in now. Nature and life mirror in metaphors and irony all the time. And so be it. A Plan thought up too long ago for anyone to remember, but can be reminded of it every day. BTW.. you asked about the meat situation. How about no meat? I'm not vegetarian anymore, but finding red meat is really not nessarsary in my foodstuffs anymore, too. Impossible brand, plant based ground "meat" is amazingly good! Except for the high sodium per serving content, (which can be eliminated from the body with lots of water), I think it is a good alternative. Like Mikey, try it you may like it😊. Safe travels!
The irony is not lost on me. I have some fairly serious health issues that require me to eat red meat. Without the diet plan my doctor put on, I wouldn’t be around.
So sorry about your health issues, Scott. I sincerely hope you get better with time. And yes, follow the doctor's orders to the T.
We need our vitamin D any chance we can get it in the northwest! Beautiful camp spot, enjoy.
If you are still in the area.... look for Allen's bar campgroung... great cell signal and only 5 bucks a night....
Scott, you mentioned that you ran your heater all night. I have the same heater in my Promaster City and am concerned about the safety of running while sleeping. How do you ensure adequate fresh air to prevent carbon monoxide buildup? Do you leave windows cracked and which ones?
I don’t have windows so I designed a ventilation system to ensure lots of fresh air. I have several videos that go over the vent system in this Playlist: th-cam.com/play/PL9PWzpL1cZIEK5IOyMP6XlZN_abmkRega.html&si=tgbadOhd20FDFsuO
SeaFoam, it’ll help clean the engine.
My brother in law sprays castor oil on His camper underneath.
I know it works for moles in my yard beautifully.
I always save some for my next door neighbor, because they all move to His yard after I spray my yard.
Trying to keep peace. lol
It is also sold under the name mole be gone. It works for moles and voles ( field mice ).
Thanks, great info!
