Today let’s make fortune cookies. Fortune cookies are given after a meal in most of the Chinese restaurants in the US. Believe it or not, before coming to the US, I have never seen a fortune cookie before. Some say it was invented by a Japanese immigrant, others say it was invented by a Chinese immigrant. This is a good recipe, they turned out great :)
The reason you have never seen fortune cookie in Chinese restaurants before is because they are Japanese.
"Fortune cookies (Tsujiura Senbei) were produced solely by the Japanese Americans till World War II. According to an Executive Order 9066 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt which states immediate closer of all Japanese American business, the Chinese American entrepreneur bought the businesses cheap as the Japanese were forced to sell under the law then continued to produce and sell to an already established client base."
