I agree totally on your comments on hotels and Airbnb. Just got back from Portugal and the Airbnb had the worst beds, pillows and cheapest furniture.

I’m always skeptical when the Airbnb says comfortable beds. I almost never find that to be true.

Most of these problems can be avoided with proper preparation and research. Also adjusting your expectations but that’s hard for an average American who is purely a creature of comfort

That's why I made the video... for people researching. Thanks for weighing in.

Going to less traveled areas and having good wifi/internet is a challenge, no matter where, in my opinion. Also, I like that VIP lounge at the end :) Those credit cards are game changer if you are traveling a lot (or just a couple times a year). Thanks for the advise!

I travel 6 months a year. Even in places like Tirana Albania I find great internet. Maybe in some remote village you might have a problem

Definitely furniture and beds are notoriously bad in Airbnb

Maybe some reviews will get people to do better.

The best way to improve this area is to get yourself into really good shape physically. I had back, hip and shoulder pain all the time. It seemed impossible to fine a good bed. Then I started working out and after a year of training my body was able to handle sleeping on the floor without pain. Having a healthy amount of muscle really helped improve my sleep quality. I just turned 50. Reducing my weight and eating good changes your life.

I'm 51 and in pretty good shape. But, this is good advice.

Have you looked into PIA? Private internet access? (Not pain in the a--). We have that for a VPN and it's so affordable. Let me know if you need a coupon/promo code. I'm not a paid sponsor just a subscriber.

I don't hear any travelers talking about the crappy furniture. Glad you addressed it. I MUST have a comfy bed or I am miserable. I traveled a lot in 2022 for my job and that was by far the worst thing to deal with!! I was able to deal with most other things if I was able to get decent sleep.

Yea, I'm not sure why most people only show the rainbows and unicorns. There are a lot of challenges out there. Thank you for the comment.

If you switch around with VPN’s you can get 30-90days free trial. Great for those short trips.

Don’t know where you are staying. We have been slow travelling for seven years using Airbnbs and we have not had any problems with beds, wifi, phones. The only thing is that some Airbnbs have more cooking appliances than others but we manage. Also you don’t have to get back to your home country to get VPN. We use a credit card without international fees because these add up and have more than one for back up. Money resolves all problems.

I made this video after a month in Spain and its true, my wife doesn't book the most luxurious accommodations. 😂

You hit the nail on the head. 👍
    It's all about planning.
Create a to do list. Like:
    Get an unlocked phone
If it can do e-sims but them right before you arrive ton of sites that offer this.
    VPNs are cheap and secure
Get a Google voice number. Free and a must for double authentication
Make your airbnb must have list. Be willing to adapt. Things are just a different norm overseas.
Use services like wise for international payments
Go with 2 credit/bank cards keep them separate.
Can you pre pay your bills? If electric and water bills are always around $X.00 a month pay ahead for the months or time away.
As you said bring a fire stick. Thanks again for breaking all this down.😊
How did your trip turn out?

I've been traveling a fair amount. But this was our first time we spent a month in another country. So there were some things that stood more this time. And every trip has it's own challenges. I think you could probably make this video after each trip and mention something new.

Airbnb can be like a Thrift store version of the hotel.

I have a vpn but have nothing but problems with it when using it overseas so we gave up using it.

I haven't gotten one yet, but I was on a Facebook form the other day and they were talking about how to trick the vpn so it works better in other countries. I think one thing was picking different cities that work better than others. I remember someone saying Houston.... I'll do a video about it one day when I get one.

Many people have to payoff that new iPhone before the provider will unlock it.

Could you find cheap hotels instead of Air BNB? I never thought about the crappy furniture. I’m retired in LA and am thinking of slow travel.

    • @TheRetirementality
      @TheRetirementality  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

The problem with slow travel and hotels is that you don't have a kitchen. So you can only eat out. But, we did stay in one hotel on this that trip and I don't think it was any cheaper, the bed and the wifi was the best we had. So.... pros and cons...
