    I'm happy I'm not the only one: I sold my x100v (a better close up lens) and never regretted it as I hated handling the body.
    To use a camera you have to enjoy the experience and I love my Pen F and my canon 5D mkll and RP.
    I use even older lenses the yours, old zuiko OM which I focus manually as I enjoy doing that. I even bought a split focussing screen for the 5D.
    I admit the fuji sensor was superior to anything I own now, but, to be honest, even my first DSLR, a Canon 450D with 12 MP was taking fantastic pictures and unless you pixel peep, you don't see the difference with modern camera if you expose properly.

    It took me a long time to warm up to the ~35mm angle of view as well. But once I started understanding how to use that perspective, I've begun to see it as an essential one to explore and improve my photography in.

    Currently enjoying my fun camera, the 5D classic with yongnuo 35mm f2. I agree with your points regarding this camera+lens set up. And yes, the chunky dslr with 35mm f2 lens, really a fun experience for a casual shoot
    Also, I've developed a method going about the MASP mode on the 5D
    ISO is set from 100-800, exposure metered at -1
    Av mode - f2 (for the bokeh), let camera decide the shutter speed
    Tv mode - 1/60 sec (for the motion blur), let camera decide the aperture
    M mode - Manual override on all setting
    P mode - all set by camera

    I never was a fan of the 35mm focal length until I started shooting with the Oly 17 1.8 on my EM10ii. Love the look it gives. A bit tighter than the 28mm I used to shoot with all the time on my Nikon full frame, but wide enough I can still shoot subjects up close which I love to do.
    That said, these days I’ve been playing with the 40mm FL. It feels like a 50 but just a smidgen wider.
    Anyway, use what works for you! Keep up the great work Robin.

    Very nice photos from your trip. I have the 17mm 1.8 and I like it much. They sold this lens together with the Pen-F nowadays as a combo. 17mm is a compromise for me between the 25mm 1.8 and the 12mm 2.0. Not too wide and not too close. When I was young I used my Olympus XA camera with the 35mm 2.8 lens. This small capsule camera was great for me in the 80's.

      The 17mm on the Pen F is just smashing; so beautiful and ergonomic, especially with a square hood. No qualms about IQ either, and when you discover DXO DeepPrime to get around the high ISO limitations, the combo becomes a keeper for life.

    I think DSLRs are definitely making a comeback. Many of us want some variety from always looking at a screen. I’ve been shooting mirrorless since 2013 (Olympus, Panasonic, Fuji) but I shot DSLRs for over a decade before that. Lately I’ve been going back to the DSLRs, including the Canon 5D, for personal work. It’s a really enjoyable shooting experience, and I agree that Canon ergos are excellent.

    Considering that it was being fed up with what I saw as Canon's stagnation back in 2014, that led to me picking up an Olympus EM5, I don't think I'll be leaning towards an old Canon as a fun camera lol. I've never tried a Fuji or Nikon though so maybe I'll try one of them at some point. I used to use my 50mm a lot when I shot film but had mostly zooms when I initially switched to digital. I prefer primes though and really like the 30mm macro right now.

    Olly E-PL10 for casual shoots for me, with the 25 f1.8 or 42.5 f1.7 Sharp, good autofocus, enough separation and above all else, light and compact, and not too bad in dark places. No viewfinder but that's ok, just line up the shot roughly with the display and the camera will work out 85% of the rest, and if not good enough, just fix the raw file when ya get home lol.

    Great episode and I like where you are going with this. The Pull-and-turn ISO dial on the x100F drove me nuts too, even though you can assign it to the front dial. I like my 5D too but I always feel it is too heavy, too intimidating and too awkward for travel. I am in the middle of a trip to NYC with my g7, 20mm and 14mm lenses. I am still adjusting to this camera. The way it controls highlights is amazing for a Canon shooter like me - but as I think about it, my 5D could have done everything I have done today a lot faster, with better focus control (because I could see what I was doing) and obviously shallow DOF when desired. But Video? Absolutely not! Live view shooting at an odd angle, no-can’t do that either; blown highlights? probably: instant focus? Yes!; joystick to move focus point - yes; crazy loud smack as the shutter fires? Oh yes, and it sounds great!

    What you said about those older X100 models are true: soft/glowy at wide open, bad close up performance, etc.
    Personally, I very rarely shoot at wide open (not a big fan of bokeh-y look) and usually from a certain distance, like street/travel photographer.
    Being such a compact camera makes the X100 fun for daily use.
    These days, I'm kinda fed up of 35/50mm focal length, and want to explore something longer like 85mm, 105mm, etc. Obviously X100 isn't the proper tool on this case, so need another camera :)

    Weird quirk with the Sony system. There’s tons of inexpensive options for 35mm and wider, and 85mm, but there’s a massive lack of options for affordable 50mm lenses. For under $500, you’ve got the Sony F1.8 FE which is pretty lackluster, or something from Samyang. That’s pretty much it. Nothing that really delivers strong bang for the buck for 50mm.
    I’ve the Samyang 50mm F1.4, and while affordable, that thing is a chonker of a lens with strong CA, and is not one I carry all the time unless I specifically need the aperture.

    You 'forced' yourself to get used to the 35mm focal length when useing the X100.
    But to shoot with a Canon (or Nikon, Sony or Fuji) with a 35mm-ish focal length
    gives a different perspective than working with the 4:3 (or mFT) perspective with the 17mm lens;
    I wonder if it the aspect ratio is (or isn't) the decisive factor.

  • @AlMansurpictures
    @AlMansurpictures ปีที่แล้ว

    Of course the fullframe sensor with nifty fifty produce a better images quality than the 23mm f2 on F, but that's only for the images quality not the other factors. User experience, design, other features. X100 series is a niche camera, it's an exotic camera, a different breed, different segmentation, different type of use and different user experience. So the title "there was a better alternative" is not right for me. That title will work better if you compare let say Pen F or EP5 + Oly 25mm or lumix 20mm to serve a purpose as everyday carry camera. Comparison between small compact camera with the giant pro DSLR even though is waay cheaper is just ridiculous. It's different "realms"
    I have pen f with 25 and 45, also x100v as replacement for my x100f. And yes, I still keep my 5D classic with 50mm. I love the 5D color sign but it won't replace my X100 or Pen F, it serve a different purpose.
    And if for some reason I need to sell everything but keep the 5D with all of its limitations to serve my photography purposes. It will get the job done but it won't be better.

    I own this Canon 35mm f2 I use with my Sony A7RII via an adapter, I like this lens too, it has a saturated look to the image. It is still very sharp at f4. It is cheap in the 2nd hand market. BTW I don't make any money from photography.

    I am trying very hard to stay with OM Systems... I really trying hard... the target is getting the OM1... but from Canada... there isn't an appointed distributor of OM products within Canada. I first tried the Olympus Pen-F; kind of a disaster... as the auto focus.. tracking does NOT work. and was told by another Olympus ambassador that the auto focus tracking is a train wreck. Next i went upgrade the Pen-F to a Olympus E1-mark iii. Now have used it for 2 weeks... again.. is still a train wreck too with same feature having a lot of problems. The problem there, perhaps I can't upgrade to latest firmware. So far, nothing positive to report. So far base on my experience... Sony Full Frame is far better. I have the Sony A9 full frame camera. All this... is very very basic.. and achievable 4 years ago and i was using a lesser model. About to give up soon... $$$ spent on trying to move to Micro43 has been a disaster so far... In Canada... we for now... like half year later... we can't purchase an OM1.... perhaps is OM1 or nothing... now basically now I understand that now... please reply me.. with your thoughts... I use mainly primes... on both Sony Full frame and on Olympus. I am seeing Sony Full Frame is a pro platform. and M43, is kind of a hey lets experiment with this... and hopefully one day.. it becomes good. yeah weight is difference... but if it can't do very basic stuff... then i must say Olympus is a piece of junk... hate to say that... but seriously ... is what is doing... really really bad !

    • @srgrohn
      @srgrohn ปีที่แล้ว

      it's not that there is no distributor in Canada; there is; the problem is with the supply chain problem. I'm from Alberta, and I had the discussion with a local camera company in Edmonton, and I was told there is a 6-8 week waiting list for the EM10 IV silver edition. I appreciate your views however, Sony makes great cameras, but not great glass. I had the very best from Sony with G master lenses. The glass just is not there; the 24-70 version 1 could not separate the subject from the background at all; I can do that with a $200.00 lens. I love the Olympus Colors, and the auto-white balance is spot on. If I can edit less, the OM system is a better company to invest in. Everything that I could do with the Sony a7II, I can do more with the Olympus Em1 mkII. Olympus has a steep learning curve, and I am grateful for Robin and a few others who shoot with the system for their videos. For fast-moving subjects, there is a way to do it with a D7000 with a kit lens, so why not my EM 1 mk II. Sony is not a "pro system" over Olympus, if anything, Sony dumbs down the camera so much that non-pros can take decent photos. I do not think there is any camera system that is a piece of junk, take it from a former Sony now Olympus shooter, it is an operator problem, not a camera problem.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  ปีที่แล้ว

      First of all, NOTHING is a piece of junk. Any camera produced in the last 5 years, no, even 10 years, are great cameras. Just because you can't quite figure out how to work the camera, or perhaps the camera is not suitable for you, does not mean the camera is a junk.
      Secondly, if you like the Sony so much, why look elsewhere? Just stay with it.
      Thirdly, I believe all camera systems and brands have their places and you choose what works for you. No one is better than the other, and it is not healthy to bash anything just because that one camera or brand does not work for you.
