"The iPhone is boring!" That's something that crosses the mind of many tech enthusiasts lately, including mine, but the more I think about it, the more I realize that's the point. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro will probably not be that different from last year's phone, and that's ok.

I have been saying this for years now.
    I’ve been an iPhone user for almost 10 years now , I went from : iPhone 5, 6, 8, 11, and now 14.
I have never gone all out and went for the pro max versions but now I realize that they are worth it.
But I’m just tired of Apple not offering ANYTHING new or innovative or just basic features that android phones offer.
Theirs 3 apps I use on iPhone that do not have the back swipe gesture , this simple gesture is making me want to switch to Android. They have universal back swipe gesture.
Usb c , we’ve known that usb c is way faster and better. Yet Apple refuses to even comply and make the switch.
Android fast charging on their phones is ridiculous! iPhone is still at 25 watts…
Customization , now since I’ve been using iPhones for 10 years I have never been a big customization fan or wanted/needed it but the way I see how customization works on androids. It makes me want that
I can find these 3 simple things on a cheap mid range android phone, yet not on a $1200 iPhone…
For the last 2-3 years , I barely use iMessage , I can’t remember the last time I even face timed it’s been THAT long since I have FaceTime in like 5 years. Yes 5 years!!
All in all, I think I’m just wanting like a breath of fresh air tbh. iPhones have boring me.
I just bought a galaxy S20 FE to replace my iPhone as my daily driver and I have never been this excited for a phone.
If I’m able to make the transition to android , I should be switching to the 23 ultra this year or wait for the 24 ultra.
I really do NOT want to leave iPhone but I just need my phone to do and offer much more than what IPhones do

    It has a good camera
It implies a high social status
Recently it has gotten a nice ecosystem

I decided I wanted a device that lasts and works properly. I left Android's because none of the manufacturers updated the OS and you were always forced to upgrade every contract cycle. People get an iPhone and they keep them for like 5 or 6 years working perfectly with updates. Sure now the Pixel exists and that is great but it's not good enough. I also like the security of iOS and that I don't have to reboot my phone 10X's a day because it doesn't run correctly.

My problem with iPhone is price. They get more expensive. Pixel offers so much more value. Not just at MSRP but because of Promos they do through both Google Fi's store or just the Google Store. I upgrade my phone every year and never pay more than $100 out of pocket. Google was so generous during the Pixel 7 release that along with signing up for Google One for two months I ended up with Google Earbuds, The V2 Google Wireless Charger, and the 7 inch Nest Hub, and made about $60 on top of it. I can't afford a yearly update to an iPhone. I probably couldn't afford to do one every 3 years even. That is a problem.

Yes, Google is privileged to use the Pixel as a loss leader supported by the billions it makes with its primary business. So they can afford to sell at a loss to grab market share, so although they clearly offer value, this needs to be revised as a business model.

    • @jonny4036
      @jonny4036 ปีที่แล้ว +9

@@andyH_England I don't believe that is really the case. Apple prices on phones are insane. I mean if they can offer a Mac Mini for $599. The iPhone SE from last year has been using a body design from years and years ago. The lcd in it is from an ancient iPhone as well. Years and years behind anything recent. The Camera has also not been updated this whole time. Yet still selling for over $400. You can't tell me Apple couldn't bring prices down, by like a lot.

This is why most major carriers just have you pay a monthly fee of like $20 - $40 that includes your device payment and annual or bi-annual upgrades at no extra cost. As long as consumers are OK with paying that monthly fee the phone manufacturers can keep raising the prices - it's more of a subscription model now with a small minority actually purchasing new flagship phones at full price.

You can only squeeze so many pixels onto a screen before the eye can’t see the difference. You can only make blacks so black before the eye can’t tell the difference. You can only make the CPU so fast before they make no perceptible difference to the programs they’re running. I remember running out of room on my 16gb 3G. I haven’t run out of room on my 512gb 13 pro max. Previous generations of phones offered quantum leaps in performance. That can’t keep happening or if it does it won’t offer a value proposition. The one thing they can do that would impress me is make a battery that lasts twice as long, three times as long, four times as long. That would be worth the upgrade.

Before having an iPhone, my dad had a piece of junk Microsoft “smartphone” that he had to reset multiple times a day and hardly worked. I remember when my parents first got the iPhone 3GS and I was blown away by it. I immediately saved up to get an iPod touch and eventually my dad gave me his iPhone 3GS as my first phone. Now over a decade later I have an iPhone 14 pro Max and it’s crazy to think back to having an iPhone 3GS. The thing had a 3.5 inch screen, lasted maybe a few hours before dying and my data plan was capped at 300 mb a month at the time as well. Smartphones have certainly come a long way and if they remain relatively unchanged for a few years with only some performance upgrades and other improvements I’m fine with that.

I hope phones get that fast in my lifetime. You mentioned AR and that's something I've been looking into recently: AR glasses. However, I don't think I should need a new phone for that. Just like how a smart watch has become an extension I think the glasses will find its footing that will help better the overall experience.

What was interesting mostly were the leaps and bounds in hardware improvements in the early years. The iOS/Android wars were and are more about the software approach than the accompanying hardware. There’s less differentiation now even in that department. Perhaps it’s just ‘all good’ largely and that’s more a problem for the tech TH-camr than anybody else?

Phones are boring, TVs are boring, computers are boring and tech is overall boring. We've reached our peak with most tech. Silver lining, boring means we've improved upon this tech so much that it's the most reliable it's ever been and I love that! I want my tech to work when I use it. I'm glad we are at a point where we don't have to hassle with a ton of bugs/glitches, just minor ones here and there. Now that tech is boring, we as a species could try to go back and focusing on what's really important. Connecting with others and building on those relationships. Tech has consumed us to the point where friends and family have drifted away from each other. Let's get back to what matters most in life.

We have gotten spoiled in populated modern society, let your Apple Watch, iPhone, MacBook, & iPad die then have no power & no internet for few days to week an then you’ll realize how great these devices are, Apple has got the best overall ecosystem for everything connecting an just working most of the time and their build quality is usually the best, wish they would give better support an fix the glitches in software last couple years most of all, also that they would keep a pro phone that’s 1 handed with 5.8-6” 120hz always on display & no bezel, slightly smaller dynamic island, slightly rounded corners thats only 7mm thick, usb-c thunderbolt port, no camera bumps just best they can fit in that form factor & made of titanium, good video👍👍

I love in the Apple events (other companies do it too) when they say "This is the best iPhone we've ever made." It's like, well yeah. You wouldn't come out and say "We decided this year to dial it back. Our phones were getting too good, so this year's iPhone is going to be a little worse than last year's." I don't know, it just seems so obvious and lazy.

These events (anything related to smartphones) are a snooze-fest. Half of the presentation would talk about the camera and then some other smaller gimmick features that most people will forget about after a week or two. And companies know this tactic works because majority of consumers care about the camera more than the rest of the phone.

No one wants to have one day whereby everything just go wrong and excitingly chaotic, from peace to suddenly economic crisis or war. B/c outside of software , in minimal adjustments...thats all apple has really done. Their last hardware charge if I'm not mistaken was the plus series ....and gestures, but they can't go any further without dramatically changing they software, or at least developing another hardware line. But I'm really glad companies decided to start making phones that aren't just candy bar style shaped. Now they have folding screens, and pop up cameras, and super high quality cameras with protruding modules, and even gaming phones and phones with RGB and led lighting on the outside. It's fun to buy phones again!......I mean ..... Android phones at least.

As someone like myself that likes to collect technology from the past and the modern era. There is not much difference with phones anymore compared to the earlier years of android that used micro usb. There was so many brands and competition with multiple brands available to choose from but nowadays it's too limited. There was like the galaxy note 4 with quad hd display with a removable battery, to the lg g3 with smaller bezels than the note 4 while still having a removable battery and both samsung and lg phones both had micro sd card slots. Newer models of lg phones with hifi quad dacs. Htc with there boom sound front facing speakers. Huawei with there large displays with really good battery life and strong signal strength. Zte with the hifi dac on the headphone jack. Sony will different variety of phones from small phones to big phones while still using the same processor on both the small phones and large phones. The nexus phones made from different brands with stock android. I collect android phones as a hobby and I still have my old android phones but the batteries needs to be replaced on them since the batteries already degraded on them plus the carriers restricting the support to use on there network, otherwise I would use my older android phones. I still keep these old android phones because they have features that the modern phones no longer have. I still have my one plus one, nexus 6p, htc one m9, zte axon 7, sony z5 premium, and htc one max. All these phones have a headphone jack and included a charger in the box when I bought them. I have a drawer full of bluetooth headphones with batteries that don't hold a charge since they already degraded with non user replaceable batteries very long plus the bluetooth headphones I purchased years ago was when everything used micro usb and usb c did not exist on bluetooth headphones and usb c was starting to become available on newer electronic devices. I still have my wired headphones that still work to do this day, my wired headphones have user replaceable cables and are user removable with the option to convert my wired headphones into bluetooth with bluetooth adapters. I prefer to stick with using wired headphones because of the sound quality and don't produce e-waste compared to bluetooth headphones with non user replaceable batteries on bluetooth headphones when the batteries degrade and stop holding a charge. Wired headphones with removable cables can be used long term for many years since they don't have a limited charge cycle like bluetooth headphones and you can't keep using the same bluetooth headphones for many years where as using the same wired headphones can outlast bluetooth headphones long term. If you have to constantly have to buy a new pair of bluetooth headphones because of the design flaws might as well have a reliable pair of wired headphones that will outlast any pair of bluetooth headphones. Bluetooth headphones are convient just like getting food at a fast food restaurant. Both bluetooth headphones and fast food restaurants are convient but not the best while both have flaws in them and wired headphones do have some flaws but the flaws can be fixed and are easier to deal with not as expensive compared to anything convient.

Having been an RAE for AT&T for almost 10 years from 2006 until 2016, I changed phones almost every 6-8 months. In that time, phones were SO exciting when they came out! Having left AT&T in 2017, I am still involved in the cellular industry and I am still the guy that changes phones pretty regularly, but the excitement factor is definitely not there anymore. These are small pocketable computers, not phones. If you know how to uninstall the phone app and do so, is it a phone anymore? Nope. Phone is just a small app that virtualized the feature of a telephone.
Similarly, you install apps on a laptop that allow you to make and receive calls… you don't suddenly call it a phone. The more we stop looking at the hardware as a phone, but more a powerful computer, the more we can make conscious decisions to be more productive on these devices, and not limit them to means of communication (calls, messages, social media, etc).

I wouldn't say I've had every flagship smartphone ever released, but I have had a flagship phone every year since flagship phones existed, and sometimes several a year. I was a beta tester for HTC starting during their Windows mobile era, and had the diamond and touch pro, touch pro 2, and then into Android up to the m9. I never used an iPhone because I've never used a Mac until I started developing apps. I got an iPhone 7 plus and I used it for 2 years in that role. It was awful. Before using an iPhone I didn't understand why people liked them. After using an iPhone, I still didn't know why people liked them. The user experience is so bland, and there's hardly any real customization options. It's as if Steve Jobs was saying, "you'll like what I like or you won't have it at all." That's the impression I got from it. As someone who made custom roms for Windows CE, Windows mobile and Blackberry, and then Android... Using an iPhone was the most unimpressive experience I've ever had with something so many people seem to like. A lot of people talk about the apple ecosystem as the reason they stay with it. To me the iPhone was designed to be boring. It does the things that it does well for the most part, but that's not impressive. It should do the things that it does well. That's where a lot of other companies fail though. So yes, Apple makes a product that works. But it's always been a little boring. My favorite phones over the years were the blackberry bold touch, HTC touch pro, and HTC m7.

I agree. As a low vision user (20/70 left eye and 20/80 right eye), I started on a Galaxy S3, then S5, then iPhone 7 Plus, now iPhone 11.
iPhone and Apple software is A+ for the low vision community. The phones itself, can be better and lower cost for a big phone. eSIM exclusive iPhone 14 in USA? I view it as a bad decision. As a dual citizen, I’d prefer a SIM slot.
I use an iPhone 11, and will until it loses support. Android isn’t great for me and my low vision. Apple and its accessibility software beats the Android equivalents for accessibility, despite being the same feature. This is why I stay with Apple.
I hate the high cost, but it’s a necessary evil. There are lower cost Android with big screens, that’s great. I use my phone for texting, calling, and that’s basically it. For anything else, iPad is my go to, and a Mac for work. Yes, I can go Android again, but I won’t, because it’s not as accessible. My phone is a phone, nothing else. For anything else, a tablet and laptop do the job.

I used to want something exciting and different from phones but now I just want the best. Phones can’t do anymore than they do now.
They can do better but not new.
Now I just want the best battery, camera, speed, integration etc.
As a pro photographer who uses his phone to capture images that I spot when I’m not out on a shoot, I’m excited to see what the new 15 Pro sensors can do.

I’m using my phone for the same things I used it for 10 years ago. My needs haven’t changed so my excitement for the devices hasn’t either. I’ve been more interested in repairing these things than anything else involving them

Smart phones have reached a plateau, so therefore there’s nothing really innovative these companies can do to excite the buyer besides software perhaps

This is a great video and reminder. People have been so spoiled by tech that they forget exactly how much a phone in your pocket can actually do. Everyone is always looking for the next big thing, just to complain about it later or how boring it has become. Once VR does its thing (which I really don't understand, just another big distraction from real world ) people will complain about that and then want walking robots in there homes that can just live life for them so they don't have too.

It is, it is boring and I am dead sure that the build quality from the iPhone 13 onwards - has dropped. It isn’t as strong. It doesn’t take a beating like it used to.

I still love my pacific blue iphone 12 pro max 256gb there's no real reason for me to upgrade to the newest iphone 14 the performance is still superb. I don't upgrade my phone just to have the newest phone out I don't follow trends. I upgrade my phone because they did a whole new redesign & added new features.🥂😎

My friend wouldnt leave ios because of the health alerts she gets from her old relatives or kids if any emergencies happen. I never considered that. She didn't like how her 13 pro is just not working anymore so she got a 14 pro. Apple supposedly supports device longevity. But apparently it won't work past 2 years. My wife randomly asked me the other day if my phone was super hot after i used my Hotspot for a few hours (galaxy s23 ultra), i said no bc ive never had this happen to me. She said her phone gets nuclear hot after an hour. 12 gigs of ram makes a difference.

0:58 I have a S22 Ultra. My friend group of 20 or so all have iPhones. I get this pressure everytime I go out with them. :(

I feel you it’s just minor changes same form factor for years I’m getting the S23 Ultra. iPhones are boring can’t jail break lack of customization very limited.

I have been going back and forth with iPhone and Android through the past years, and I really think iPhones are boring.
I have Nothing Phone 1 at the moment and I love it.

The peak of me excitement was the iPhone X. It was the biggest redesign, UI change, and changed the whole landscape. I don't think they can do that again.

I've been an Android user for 11 years, and I recently purchased an iPhone. I dunno, but I love my iPhone. How it works, its ecosystem-even Android has the biggest customizations, features, and whatnot. It depends on the user, anyway.

When it comes down to it. If you like the stock experience, apple does that better.

I think the innovation these days is not so much of what can be seen, but what cannot be seen.
We have the insane chip that sort out so many tasks that we take for granted. The AI, text recognition, human recognition. All at in the milliseconds.
What i feel is that the UI needs a major revamp. Especially 1st party apps.
Groundbreaking stuff will be materials and engineering. If they can hit it.
