- I used to hate Super Mario Bros 2, but now it's one of my favorites. What changed?

Why hello you lovely little peppercorns, my name's Noa Lee and Super Mario Bros 2 is often cited as one of the best games on the NES and it's one that's seemingly loved by everyone...except me and a few others. Super Mario Bros 2 is of course the western version of another Nintendo game by the name of Yume Kojo Doki Doki Panic but it greatly overshadows that game and has become one of the most important milestones for the Mario series.
So why is it that I hated Super Mario Bros 2 until recently? Is it just that the game was too different from the rest of the Mario series? Or that it always felt like an official rom hack? Who's to say; all I know is that I fully expected this review to be me just talking about why I personally hate Super Mario Bros 2, only for me to be pleasantly surprised that it's sort of grown on me.
Super Mario Bros 2 is one of those games that no matter how hard I try I can’t seem to get into. As the sequel to one of the most important games ever made, Super Mario Bros, you’d think it would be right up my alley but that’s never been the case. From Super Mario Bros 2 ’s close connection to Yume Kojo Doki Doki Panic, to the new combat mechanics and focus on explorative gameplay rather than tight platforming, Super Mario Bros 2 ends up as quite the peculiar game, and its history has prevented me from enjoying it as a Mario game until recently.

It’s not the best, but it’s far from the worst, especially as Super Mario Advance 1 because it really is a blast from the past so it shouldn’t have only been a dream.
@@kieranstark7213 I think it's funny that "cannonically" this game is just a dream, yet all of the enemies, character designs, and recurring themes of this game have continued to live on in the main series, yet something like Super Mario Land 1 wasn't a dream and yet practically nothing from that game has carried on. I mean, who can forget Mario's iconic power up: Super Balls! lol
I agree, unless miraculously, Nintendo brings characters from the Super Mario/Wario Land series back for cameos from Tatanga to Captain Syrup.

I've often wondered that myself; it's clear that SMB2 (USA) affected the development of Super Mario Bros. 3 since there are pokies and the looks of the characters haven't changed. Could've been a much different world.

The reason Doki Doki Panic was chosen was because it started out as a vertically-scrolling 2-player Mario game prototype, according to an interview with one of the game developers from Nintendo. They added in some side-scrolling levels, reduced it to one player and made it into an Arabian-themed promotional video game for Fuji TV's Yume Kojo '87 Festival. Shigeru Miyamoto, Koji Kondo and Kensuke Tanabe all worked on Doki Doki Panic in 1987 before retooling it as an easier, more accessible Mario sequel for gamers in the Western World. Many characters in this game came back in other Mario games, plus Wart (under his original Japanese name, Mamu) returned in The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. If anything, Super Mario Bros. 3 would've became Super Mario Bros. 2 in the West if another Nintendo-published game wasn't found to be used as our version of Super Mario Bros. 2...
In August 1990, I was introduced to SMB1. And I think in later September, I got introduced to SMB2 and SMB3 on the same day. I played them in order of course. I begun to see SMB1 as more simplistic compared to SMB2 and SMB3. My cousin that had SMB1, had told me that other Mario games existed. And that the second one didn't have question mark blocks, you instead pulled up grass to get items, and you went through doors instead of pipes. So at the time, it seemed like each Mario game was going to do something different. SMB3, she hadn't played yet, but I when I played it and saw the instructions, I seen it as a much expanded upon version of SMB1. And for awhile, there were only 4 Mario games, Dr Mario being the fourth one. I guess Super Mario Land existed, but nobody really knew of it yet in my 2nd grade class. The TV show for SMW introduced me to Yoshi and some of that game's tropes, but it would be awhile before I played it. I had the first three games mastered before I got regular access to playing SMW. The other cousin of mine, that had SMB2 and SMB3, told me that Wart and Bowser were cousins, and I just thought, the Mario universe had multiple villains, like how on cartoons, there were often two or more reoccurring villains.
I still want to see more of the SMB2. Like a 3d version of the SMB2 tropes. Or even a game where say, Wart comes in and overthrows Bowser and you have to overcome Wart and his army, and in such a scenario, Bowser can be a playable character.
And while SMB2 had a huge legacy, Super Mario Land, got more gimped in that regard.

Mario 2 was a fantastic game back then and was extremely popular and hard to get when it was released. and it still really holds up well over time. Yeah its different from the others, but at the time of release there was only 1 other mario game to compare it to. SMB2 Is easily a top 25-30 nes game.
Doki Doki Panic was intended to be a Mario game
Well yes originally then it turned into something else and then it finally became what it was originally supposed to be. Weird isn’t it? I certain think so
This game gets so god damn hard as you play through but it never ceases to impress with it's creativity all the while. As you mentioned, once you allow the game some time to stand on it's own merit and allow the "HEY THIS AINT LIKE ANY OTHER MARIO GAME" feeling to settle - it really begins to shine. This game has always had the Doki Doki stain on it, essentially stripping it from having any meaningful legacy.
As proof of this, try and find a 20th, 25th, or 30th year retrospective video on SMB2. It doesn’t exist.
People didn’t like it because it wasn’t like the first and third. But here’s the thing. The first game is only good through the lens of 1985. At the time of its release, there was no reason for SMB2 to live in the shadow of its predecessor. Because it, too, was very good through the lens of its period.
The idea of using enemies as projectiles is not just awesome, in general, it was completely unique at the time. So many mechanics from this game are unique, from the ability to play multiple characters, to the sand mechanics, to the enemy designs, to the level design. All completely original at the time. And the levels have real personality.
It was objectively better than SMB1 and (the lost levels) in graphics, gameplay, level design, and yes, music.
I’ve never seen such a good game for its time get so much hate as SMB2. It’s a shame.
For the record, before Doki Doki Panic was rebranded as a Mario game, it was designed to be like a Mario game. So there. Take that, nerds.
This game was the start of it all for me. Discovered it circa 1987 and it was a huge revelation. I was instantly hooked and I instantly realized how good video games are! And more than 33 years later I'm still hooked like crazy haha. And glad that the game grew on you. It's one of the best Mario's out there IMO and it feels unique in some ways.
I played the Gba version as a kid, not knowing about the original Mario 2. Didn’t care how “different” it was compared to the first mario game. It was fun to play.
It was strange even back then, between SMB2 and the ‘Super Mario Bros.’ movie from 93, it was a turbulent time to be a Mario fan, you have no idea.
The original Mario movie is weird and makes no sense, at least stuff from Super Mario Bros 2 actually became part of future installments, Shy Guys, throwing Koopa shells, those black furry guys who jump around, all became Mario staples.
weirdest part for me is their heads stay the same size when going from 2 hearts to 1. The coolest? the rare bosses and graphics. actually for me the coolest was totally remember a dream about playing this in 1990 when someone said "get this powerup to become bubble gum mario" that makes you this invincible mario who has bubble gum covering him all over and firing it at enemies, one of only 2 dreams I remember that far back having
Wow man what a great video. I couldn't agree with you more, except for the ending. I've tried so many times to get into it and just cant. Never played it as a kid and have no nostalgia. Also, thank you for saying the north American crash, top hat gaming man informed me of that, and big ups linking gaming historian. I've truly come to love your retro reviews and my biggest complaint is merely that there aren't work. Seriously really good work, the editing, voiceovers and just entire quality is fantastic. Thanks Kenny! I'm honestly surprised how many people have a similar story as me when it comes to SMB2; such an interesting air surrounding this game. Still, trying to find a way to increase the number of videos I get out; I'd like to do at least once a week. Kenny Mentzer I’ve attempted to play this game since I was a kid when it first came out. I never liked it, I could never get into it, it’s frustrating and the platforms sucks

I know you probably won't like this reply, but I'll try to explain as much as I can. Super Mario Bros 2 is one of those "You had to be there!" sorts of games. I grew up in the 80's and 90's when all these games were fresh and new. Coming out of the Atari era, we fans honestly didn't have any expectations for our games. Seriously. Super Mario Bros 2 being vastly different from Super Mario Bros 1 wasn't a big deal because there was nothing else to compare it to. We didn't get the Japanese version, and then this, and be like "Hey! The previous games were so alike, why is this so weird and different???" Heh, maybe there was like...a fan or two that was confused about why neither Mario game could be won by defeating all the enemies coming out of the pipes (like in the original Arcade Mario Bros game) but I never knew any!
Anyway, all that said, I'm really happy you've come to love Super Mario Bros 2! It was the first (and only) NES Mario game that I was able to beat without cheats or warps. For a very long time, it was my all time favorite Mario game and still holds a special place in my heart!

It was still relatively early in video games, all Nintendo sequels were weird then the 3rd game went back to the first games roots but way bigger and better.
This was my one of my favorite game as a kid, my mom and I played it all the time! It's so weird, but I can't help it. It's so charming in its own way :D
I think I would've loved this game when I was a kid; you're right, there's just a lot of charm to it that certainly appealed to a lot of kids back in the day. :)

The USA version of Super Mario Bros 2 made a greater impact on future Mario Bros games than the Japan version ever did. Arguably the Japan version made no impact at all.
lol actually yes, we got birdo, shy guy and other stuff from this game while the Japan version biggest improvement in relation to the first game is... a poison mushroom, pathetic right?
@@juliodonofreo yes, it was pretty much the same as the first mario.. except for the poison mushrooms and the difficulty level, that was way way higher.
Almost no impact actually since well Poison Mushrooms have come back every now and then, Luigi got his high jumps from that game and Mushrooms got the design of having eyes from that game.
Most people don't know the actual background to Mario 2 and many videos with evidence have disappeared over the last 12+ years. Miyamoto and his team were working on Mario 2 when they got a call that for some theme park they needed a video game to accompany it. And because they were so short on time to deliever they used already existing Mario 2 game assets to get the job done. Mario 2 was supposed to be a four player vs game with mostly vertical arenas. And most things in Doki Doki Panic (the actual Super MArio Bros 2 in the West) indicate just that. But since they had Doki Doki Panic now in Japan they still needed a fix for Super Mario Bros 2. And so they just re-used old Mario Bros assets. That is why Mario 2 Japan feels like a hacked version of Mario Bros. But most people do not know neither do they care. Funny?
Mario bros 1 and 3 were real Mario bros games. This was more of an experimental game but this game was still kind of cool
Here is how it goes. Had it not been for the Doki Doki incident, the Mario Bros 2 game would have been totally vertical only and 4 player via the multi-tap. But because for this Dreamland Park and the need for a video game Mario 2 became a regular platformer with lots of vertical shafts. All assets used in Doki Doki Panic were half finished already since Miyamoto was working on Mario 2 at that time.
Always great to come back to a game that wasnt given a fair chance and then turn around and love it. Believe it or not, this was a recent experience for me with Hollow Knight.
I agree; I didn't like Demon's Souls the first time I played it (thought it was just okay) but then I went back and played it and now it's one of my favorite games ever. Makes me wonder how many other games I don't like are actually up my alley these days.
I recently began playing Donkey Kong Country 3 on my daughter’s Nintendo Switch. I had it on SNES when I was a teen and didn’t really appreciate it back then, especially after the first 2 which blew me away. Playing it again 26 years later, I can finally say I love it.
I’m enjoyed this game as a kid. Had it on NES and then as part of SM All Stars on SNES. Now in my 40s I’ve been playing both iterations once again on my daughter’s Nintendo Switch. In fact hours before this post I played it start to finish, no warp zones (or warp vases in this case lol).
SMB3 remains my favorite but I still love this game, it’s unlike any Mario game before or since and in a good way if you ask me.
SMB3 is my favorite 2D Mario game as well, but there's just something special about SMB2. Which version do you prefer the NES or the SNES version? I'm partial to the NES version myself. :D
@@NoaLee when it comes to SMB1 and SMB3 I’m 100% partial to the NES version. Up until the other day I was 50/50 on which SMB2 I preferred, until I played straight thru the NES version on the Switch. NES is my jam!

for me this is one of the most approachable NES games. The difficulty scale is relatively smooth. The music is really nice, the graphics are well done. The pace isnt fast and the hazards arent cheap. Hell, even the graphics are really good too!

That clearly shows from what era you are. When the game was released in 1988 nobody thought it was weird.

The reason why the real Super mario 2 the lost levels wasnt released in the US was because the Japanese thought the game would be too hard for Americans so they released this instead.
I've always liked it better than Mario 3, you get more characters which is cool, even the original Mario is Very repetative, and the bosses are also unoriginal, I only miss the fireball throwing in it. Even in Super Mario world it's mainly Mario, and the color swap for Luigi, and Yoshi for the most part which isn't great. Plus I think the game is better looking than Mario 3.
Since this was the second installment and was slightly different from the others, I wonder what if Mario became one of those franchises where there is no such thing as THE bad guy and instead the villain and baddies would change game from game, since Bowser wasn't established yet since his only appearance was in the first game. I am also glad that didn't happen since i don't think i would have like the franchise as much,.still this game is absolutely amazing and besides mario maker 2, i wish more mario games had elements from this. Like other than captain toad and the yoshi games, where are the turnips and shy guys? I really do want to see more of that.
Personally i like the game. But i only play as luigi for 2 reasons.
1: hes my favorite mario character
2: hes the most fun to play as..... Mario is just mario except his jumps feel off. I like peach but her picking up speed just gets me killed most of the time. And i dont know what toad does because i only used him like 2 times.
Peach is my favorite, but Luigi's a close second. I agree with Mario's jump's feeling off and Toad can pick up items faster and through them farther but otherwise he's about the same as Mario. Luigi and Peach are the way to go in this game. :D

I had Mario Bros when it came out and then I had Mario Bros 3. I then searched long and hard to find Mario Bros2. And when I was finally home I was so disappointed with it when I played it. It had nothing to do with Mario Bros. I finished it. But I never liked this game. I really think it was a big mistake by Nintendo. A really stupid game imo.
Mario 2 is the first game I was able to finish, so I love it still today.
I don't know but I don't like this Game. It's too different and I don't feel it as a Super Mario game. Especially knowing the whole story behind the game.
That's fair; hell, that's exactly how I felt until I made this video. lol
I wonder will I ever be able to love Zelda series like you do Super Mario Bros. 2 now. I always thought Zelda games were way too confusing to be fun. I also found it's story very bland. I also hate the open world of A Link to the Past. It is large but also empty there is nothing to do in it. Maybe my opinion would change someday.
I kind of had a similar thing happen with the Zelda series when I was a teenager. Didn't really care for them until I got Wind Waker on a whim and fell in love with it. Maybe try that one? IMO the Wind Waker has the best story, characters, music, and setting of the whole series; the open world is a bit empty but it's also an ocean so at least it makes narrative sense and sailing is a lot more fun than walking.
Or maybe try the Oracle games on the Game Boy Color. Their open worlds are smaller and structured more like a Metroid game so they open up gradually and there's almost always something to do just a few steps away.

I've played gamboy ones. They are decent at best if you ask me. As for the wind waker there is no way ! I can't emulate a Gamecube game on a Samsung Galaxy Tab 4. No I don't have a PC or a game console. Good advise tho Wind Waker looks really good honestly. I really liked it's cartoony style.

@@NoaLee Thanks Man. I am trying to finish all classic Mario Games in Nintendo Switch online, after all, that was one of my frustrations as a kid, not finishing any Mario Games. At first I find it odd playing this because it is different that is why I skipped it and played/finished Mario 3, Lost Levels and World instead. But after that, I give this a chance since I want to finish them all and I am glad I am enjoying it now. I am currently at 4-3.

The SNES version let's you save at least, but I don't really care for the graphics. The original looks better IMO.

I remember getting this game and was so disappointed. Not a mario game just a reskinned turnip throwing simulator.

@@NoaLee believe me I've tried to get into it but I'm at the stage you found yourself at - which is getting bored after a few levels because it's just such an odd game. Just doesn't feel right. Your video makes me like the game a little bit more though

Atleast super mario 2 is a good game
LOVE this game! Mario 2 is easily my favorite of the trilogy. It's far more consistently challenging and joyful than Mario 1, with far less flaws than Mario 3. This game is an absolute treat to play, for not only being a fantastic Mario title, but a fantastic NES game in general. This game is also WACK and bat-sh*t insane all over the place! It's called "Mario Madness", and boy does it deliver!

@@sidnew2739 Monotony in the fortress and airship levels, a number of subpar boss fights, cryptic secrets lacking any sort of hint, and comparatively simple stage design (next to later games in the series). Just enough to push Mario 3 beneath Mario 2, for me. Mario 2, however, I cannot find any major faults with, even if it lacks a similar sense of scale.

It's really fun getting extra lives in this game, as it actually takes a bit of skill to rack 'em up rather than just getting lucky or knowing or cheating. :D

how? im surprised u never said anything about the only 2 limited continues. thats what makes me drop the game.
@@zeebpc In 3-1 you can drop down the waterfall and go into a cave that allows you to farm a lot of coins really quickly and you can just repeat that section over and over to rack up even more coins so when you beat the level you have a ton of tries at the slot machine. With a little practice you can easily get 99 lives in about five minutes. :D

I hate this game because of it's shitty permanent game over, permanent game over is shit, the controlls also kinda suck and the level design is too confusing sometimes, I still really dislike this game :/
I like the japanese Mario 2 much more than this game tbh
Playing the SNES version or using warps helps with the permanent game over, but I'll totally admit that the controls take some getting used to. I think a lot of the problem I and a lot of other people had/have with this game is that we were all trying to play it as a 2D Mario game rather that treat it as its own thing. Once I stopped thinking of it as a Mario game it started to click for me, but I still see why it doesn't appeal to a lot of people.
The controls are absolutely all right.
What a terrible take no Mario 2 doesn't come close to mario 3 or Mario 1 for that matter of fact. Heck it wasn't even supposed to be a mario game and it shows that from the jump. Mario 2 was let down when it came out but then SUPER MARIO BROS 3 came along and "totally redeemed its self" lol (dumb&dumber). But yeah super mario 3 is a close to perfect game as u can get especially for the NES and was way more nostalgic then 2 but then again Nostalgia isn't a good measure for anything since it can be nostalgic for one person and not the other. It just isn't a great way to rate games, design,game play, sales,innovation, artistic choices, in all those categories mario 3 blows mario 2 outta the water nostalgia included lol
Yes it was supposed to be a Mario game before they had to use the assets to creat Doki Doki Panic for the Japanese game market. And besides your useless hate for the game, it was well beloved after release and people still love it for the same reasons. It is you the younger people hating stuff for the wrong reasons.
I dont see where its any less hard then the lost levels in fact it is harder then the lost levels in some ways in fact i have beat lost levels alot of times i only beat super mario 2 3or4 times.

I've been hearing that a lot lately actually; kind of surprises me to learn that there are so many others who have disliked this game over the years when all I used to hear was praise for it. lol

That's obviously bullshit. Mario 2 is not perfect, but a very fine game and far, far from bad.
