Before heading back down in the spring you should totally take a leg via the Åland and Finnish archipelago, lots of neat places to explore and plenty of natural harbours for free anchoring! Very very nice sailing.
Sweet video, when you reconnect the wires to your mast maybe install quick disconnects. That way you don't have to cut them again. Looking forward to your next videos. Cheers.
As I’m a TH-cam sailor, from a Landlubbing farmer family, I enjoyed the explanation about the starboard tack. I enjoy learning sailing info from your videos, Thanks Sam!
Sam its been great following your videos from you left usa, its been a great achievement for you. As for the yanmar cold start problem, if it were my engine i would aquire an eberspacher or mikuni diesel air heater glowplug and drill and tap a threaded hole in the air intake manifold and fit the glowplug in. Wire it through a relay from ignition circuit so it heats while holding key in crancking position and disconnects when engine starts. Probably a preheater element from an older tractor might be better as it wouldent draw as much current. Certainly would improve cold starting. Not been critical but would advice renewing raw water filter before it disentegrares and leaves u in the brown smelly stuff. Im a great believer in the 6 P,s Im preparing my boat for a cruise to orkney & shetland from the clyde this year. Enjoy your break.
That's a good tip, thanks. Never would have thought to modify the engine to have a glowplug. Another option I can see would be to get a secondary switch for the plug, or to change the ignition switch to one with glowplug function maybe. That way you can warm up the plug before cranking, as it should be.
I had the same probelm with my diesel heater. its just a question of adjusting the fan. I put a washer or two under the screw that fastens the elctrical panel. That way the fan was adjusted a lot better to the sensor. The fan itself also had some casting residues, that initially rubbed against the sensor. I removed the residues with sandpaper and voila! A have no more errors...
Man I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your videos. While others spend 30% or more of their time with drone footage, canned music, intros, pictures of animal life, and other stuff., your videos just jump right into it. That’s the way it should be.
Sam, just started following your channel. I live in New Mexico. In the past 25 years or so I have made 5 trips to west coast of Sweden for sailing. I have been as far south as Kungsbaka and north to Grebbestad. I have an old friend that has a summer house near Lysekil. I understand how the North Sea can get. Fair winds and following seas. Steve
A testament both to Sam's abilities but also the soundness of the Cape Dory. That boat has taken good care of you, Sam. There should be a known fix for your cold start issue. Our Yanmar always fires up on the first crank in temps down as low as 25 deg F, even after being winter stored for 6 months. I would talk to a Yanmar tech.
Sometimes I just sit in my chair and watch your videos and I am amazed that a local man is sailing the n a twenty eight foot boat. It just blows me away! You have accomplished a lot. By the way, a true Southern Gentleman never sails to windward in the ocean.
Sam thanks for the content enjoy your time on the land to recharge your personal batteries thanks for taking me around the Atlantic this past year I am landlocked in Northwest Pennsylvania and appreciated all of your videos good health to you.
Let us know when you are back in the Gothenburg area, happy to lend a hand and buy you a beer! Your video simply pushing off the dock towards Hawaii was - the - watershed moment that made me buy a sailboat! Keep up the good and inspiring videos!
Excellent idea to change the oil now. Get rid of all the acids and crud you don't want to work on the bearings while the engine sits for months at a time.
I have a small John Deere tractor with a Yanmar diesel. It has an electric air heater that preheats the intake so when starting, the intake air is warmed. It starts very well, even when below freezing. Maybe you can find and retrofit to your situation. Just a thought.
My MD7a volvo was always a little underpowered for theCD28. Your sailing adventures have delighted thousands. Looking forward to more miles under ther keel for you!
Wow! What a mighty wee vessel! I knew the numbers re her size, seeing her out of the water!? she's a brave and sturdy little ship. Have a great rest and Fair Winds come splash down!
Great adventure Sam, thank you for taking us along. You have inspired me to get into sailing and for that I truly thank you. Looking forward to your next adventure!
These videos are awesome. I've never sailed a day in my life but somthing about these videos are inspiring to a debt slave stuck in the system lol. Be safe man.
Thank you Sam for bringing us on your adventures. I have to thank the TH-cam algorithm for suggesting your channel. I didn’t know that I needed this, but thank you again
I know it's kinda dumb, but I can't help feeling sorry for Pickle all alone in the cold. ☺️😁 I saw on Instagram you stopped by in Vienna. Hope you enjoyed the city. Thanks so much for all your great videos! Enjoy your days on land in the warm Florida weather. 🙂
Thanks for showing the actual movement of the boat while sailing and the noise. Sailing is not a static situation on a smooth road or noiseless! Best wishes for fair weather.
Sam, was taken aback when I saw that it was necessary to cut the mast electrical-wires. Anyway, do-not use simple spade quick disconnects unless you can 100% guarantee that there will be absolutely air-tight and no water ingress because they will quickly corrode. I would try and find some gas/water-tight locking connectors to permanently install (maybe in a watertight enclosure) if you feel you will ever need to disconnect in the future. If not, I would make strong mechanical connections with each wire (probably J-hooks since you don't have a lot of extra cable) then carefully solder each connection and then seal every wire and the bundle with fusion-tape--making sure you fill any air-pockets or voids (use plenty of tape and wrap the outside at least 6-8 inches each way from the splice). But whatever you do, the connections need to be gas-tight or you'll for sure get corrosion in the connections from constant sea-air and water. Q: Are you an Amateur (Ham) Radio operator; HF is a great communications medium and a good way to pass time when all your books, podcasts, and movies are stuck in the cloud--LOL? And if you lose your other electronics, it can save you in an emergency situation. When I was young I used to keep radio-schedules with several ships in both the Atlantic and Pacific. I would pass progress-reports, weather information and exchange welfare checks with their families using both voice and morse-code. This was all before modern GPS, and satellites were available. Really love your videos and your GREAT community of commentors--have learned a lot on you channel!
Sam, I love your content.. and it's my dream to go sailing. I have plenty of money saved up to help out. Not buy my own boat, but to easily help out. I'd gladly be a crew mate if needed.
My 2GM won’t start in the 40’s F. If I have electricity I heat fuel lines into injector with a hair dryer and point the hair dryer into the air intake. Starts right up
Sad you didn't have time to cross over to Thyboron and sail through Limfjorden in Denmark.... supposed to be beautiful. That's where I'm planning to sail this summer 🙂
Sam, what a spectacular sailing season that was, well done, Eric the Viking has an awful lot of catching up to do to equal your ocean crossing explorations! Do you have any photos/plans or video of the fitting of your transom platform, they are so practical I think they should be on all sailboats where possible especially for singlehanders to assist boarding from swimming or dinghy’s! Does the wind vane operate beside it, they seem very close together? SkipRay.
Wow super clean bottom. You've been in cold water but you also crossed the Atlantic. Yeah... must be some good paint. Edit: do you remember the brand Sam? Thanks.
Looking forward to your Florida Bay/Everglades vids. We've camped/cruised our Hobie 18 from Tampa to Miami and all points between. Favorite ENP spots are Barnes Key anchorage, Rabbit Key, all the capes at Cape Sable, Flamingo, Highland Beach, Little Shark River into Whitewater Bay. SAiling the channels from Flamingo east towards Dump Key, Jimmie Channel, Captain Key and Crab Key. Watch the wind and tides so you don't get dried out in the upper reaches of the Bay. Good Luck, have fun
Re: your water tank inspection port, I installed the same inspection ports on my water tanks. Remove the ports and reinstall, but caulk first. I used Butyl rubber tape. The screw top should have an O ring so that is probably not the problem. The leaks are where the port screws into the tank.
I've found that even with a brand new inspection port of that type with the O-ring, they still leak if submerged unless you really crank them on ridiculously tight. We had to use a hammer and screw driver to pound-rotate the lid super tight to keep water from entering the bilge from our swim platform. Kind of defeats the purpose of being an inspection port. They seem to only be designed to keep casual water out, not submerged water.

Sam, first time I saw you was in a tiny beach/kid dinghy? In southern California, and now you are in my neighbourhood!? (Zealand, Denmark) very cool! Have a good winterbreak bru.
Most sailing vloggers head for the tropics in winter. You and the “Sailing Uma” couple are the only ones marching to the rhythm of a different drummer.

Before heading back down in the spring you should totally take a leg via the Åland and Finnish archipelago, lots of neat places to explore and plenty of natural harbours for free anchoring! Very very nice sailing.
And from Åland to Turku you can use my sauna and washing machine
I second that! Could take Göta Canal across Sweden for a different experience!
Agreed, it would be a shame to go this far and not go to the Finnish archipelago, late spring is a good time also.
I need a sauna.
Your heater isn't broken it has carbon build up. They are easy to take apart and clean . My heater had the same code and it was just carbon
Sweet video, when you reconnect the wires to your mast maybe install quick disconnects. That way you don't have to cut them again. Looking forward to your next videos. Cheers.
Rest well Pickle. See you next season. Thanks for sharing Sam!
As I’m a TH-cam sailor, from a Landlubbing farmer family, I enjoyed the explanation about the starboard tack. I enjoy learning sailing info from your videos, Thanks Sam!
You also have right of way over other craft under sail (within reason of manouverability ).
There's more .
Sam its been great following your videos from you left usa, its been a great achievement for you.

Sam finally turns on that motor. I think he is ready to get of that sailboat.
Sleep tight, Pickle. Enjoy the break, Sam!
Thanks!
That shot of Pickle covered in snow was AWESOME! Don't worry, spring will be here before you know it! :-)
Hard to believe that little boat has all those miles on it. Great job 👏 Great videos
It's been a great season of sailing! Looking forward to picking back up in May. Safe travels Sam!.
The white boat was very nice 👍

Always bittersweet tucking the boat away for the winter. Looking forward to seeing the camping videos from Florida!

A bit surreal to see you in my tiny childhood marina. Welcome to Sweden!
Same feeling here. From Hawaii to so familiar waters and marina. 😁
Vilken ort ligger marinan?
Battens in your H16 sail makes a big difference in speed. I know they're a pain to put in but you should do it.
Thanks Sam , please keep posting and looking forward towards Spring when you sail again .
What a season! Great stuff.

Thx for all the posts. Its been great watching them all...

Thank you for taking us with you!
Thanks for all the good vids Sam. Take care Smooth Saling.
Thank you very much for a great season!
Great adventure Sam, thank you for taking us along. You have inspired me to get into sailing and for that I truly thank you. Looking forward to your next adventure!
Well on the good side, cutting the wires gives you a chance to put on some sealed detachable connectors so you won't have to cut them again.
I love the maintenance videos. Thank you!
These videos are awesome. I've never sailed a day in my life but somthing about these videos are inspiring to a debt slave stuck in the system lol. Be safe man.
Thank you for the journey Sam...
we are going to miss the Pickle! but have a fun winter!
Love your videos !! seeing you on a Hobie brings back lots of memories... loved the rudders humming ..enjoy ...!
Thank you Sam for bringing us on your adventures. I have to thank the TH-cam algorithm for suggesting your channel. I didn’t know that I needed this, but thank you again
Also, could you place wire connections on it so that next time you have to cut them, it’s just a simple plug and play?
Cool pickle, warm Sam, have a great winter, put up a wish list, man! Great season of sailing!!!!
I'd guess that an internal Crankcase Heater would be more effective than blowing hot air into the engine compartment external.
I can’t wait to see your Med adventures- something I aspire to do in retirement. I’ll be taking notes!
Good video and I'm looking forward to your winter adventures.

It’s thirty years since I did any deep water sailing. Your vids help me relive some of the best times in my life. Cheers!
The more I watch the more I love it
Thanks for the season!! Always sad when it's time to put the boat on the hard.
impressive and inspiring trip you have taken there. So you have to keep going when the heat and spring return.
Thanks for showing the actual movement of the boat while sailing and the noise. Sailing is not a static situation on a smooth road or noiseless! Best wishes for fair weather.
The most inspirational Florida man ever. My new favorite youtuber
Great end to your season. I've enjoyed the videos and looking forward to the coming season.

USofA! Why?
Sweet. I'm looking forward to off season Sam videos
I like you'r video's. They are nice to watch because they are very calming.
Always better to change oil end of the season. The microscopic particles of engine metals in oil makes it acidic which causes further corrosion
My 2GM won’t start in the 40’s F. If I have electricity I heat fuel lines into injector with a hair dryer and point the hair dryer into the air intake. Starts right up
Thx for a great voyage
Hey Sam, I didn’t see you topping off your fuel tank. Hoping that you don’t have condensation in your fuel in the spring. That could be big problem.
Sad you didn't have time to cross over to Thyboron and sail through Limfjorden in Denmark.... supposed to be beautiful. That's where I'm planning to sail this summer 🙂

Sikaflex is your freind just give a good layer on the water tank and is good

"Goodbye Denmark, we're going to Sweden" - too bad, hope you make it to my home country next season :-)
Pretty clever to go on the hard in Sweden. Springtime and some of the worlds most beautiful women might make for a great start to next sailing season.
All feminists.
Saving this for later after work! Love your sailing adventures. Jag lär mig svenska så exalterad inför detta äventyr.
Lycka till! Tack för du vill lära dig vårt språk :)

It would be supercool if you could visit Hallberg Rassy when you get back to Orust.
If you are planning a leg in Finland after the winter, you are welcome for some sauna, wash, anchor and dinner in Pellinki archipelago
6:01 I'm always thankful when someone puts out a wind speed/direction flag like that! Thank you kind sir!
Thats the standard swedish flag you fly in Sweden. Unless there is some kind of holiday or celebration, then you use the normal swedish flag.
Welcome to Sweden! Let me know if you plan to make a stop in Lomma this spring.
My Yanmar 3GM30F starts fine in all weathers , no gloplugs, think yours needs overhaul
I hope you have a great winter
Welcome to Sweden! Don’t miss out on exploring the beautiful archipelago north of Orust when you’re back in the water. The Koster Islands are a gem worth the trip!
That looks like a much easier way to pull the mast & especially to pull the boat out! It seems safer for some reason too....
Often referred to as a "Gin Pole." Commonly found at smaller/DIY boatyards.
that's a really nice mast crane! my old marina had an old telephone pole with a makeshift boom. tricky even with a couple of people.
Love your content! Side note: The "Wind Mills" are called Wind Turbines lol. I'm actually going into the profession of repairing them, hopefully after some time I can buy a boat and do what you're doing. Love your content, keep up the great work!
My buddy did that for a while and he had 300+ travel days in a year. Salary was absolutely amazing but there's a limit to how many years you can travel 300+ days for sure.
Whatever you do, don't tilt at them
Hello Sam always waiting to see your next videos but you have to make more videos what are we supposed to do? We are going to be doing our nails waiting for your next season but it's all good it is ever break I guess I remember productivity for your consumers and one of your favorite fans I guess I have to wait like everybody else. Anyway Sam stay safe my friend God bless you and enjoy your vacation we'll be waiting.
Sam, first time I saw you was in a tiny beach/kid dinghy? In southern California, and now you are in my neighbourhood!? (Zealand, Denmark) very cool!
Have a good winterbreak bru.
Rough life Sam enjoy !
Most sailing vloggers head for the tropics in winter. You and the “Sailing Uma” couple are the only ones marching to the rhythm of a different drummer.
hey i cant wait to see your camping setup for the h16
Sam it was great seeing you at the home depot if you ever need a hand I would volunteer
Have a good sleep Pickles! Looking forward to your Hobie adventures Sam!
Thanks Sam.
When abouts are you planning on re-floating Pickled Herring? I enjoy your Vlogs and admire how you face your challenges. I was disabled in 1992 when a speeding truck wiped out my car after punching it into me, disabling me. I know that I cannot handle a boat much larger than 40 foot but you make smaller boats look easier to handle. I live in Zululand, South Africa and even in winter, the coldest it gets is maybe 18 centigrade. I get sea breezes warmed by the currents flowing South from the Equator so it is highly unlikely to ever snow here.
I am danish and come from Copenhagen, you should visit Denmark, you have to visit Kronborg Castle, and then sail into Copenhagen haubour, a lot of restaurants and people are son friendly, have a nice trip.
not forget Christiania
love this, the closet I get to sailing is Sea of Thieves.
I seem to recall that when you solo sailed to Hawaii, you had not sailed a boat on anything larger than a lake or a bay! I admire what you have accomplished. In SA to do similar you require to pass your captains certification. For this reason, I would like to buy a US registered boat which is exempt from this requirement. I am bright enough to pass these exams but after I was run down by a truck, I have lost the ability to write legibly which kind of limits me!
Man... id really hoped you head south and do the inland rivers, id love to do that one day and come out in the med..
