Wardrobe department usually gets this one wrong; brand spanking new and no thought that they need to look worn and dusted up. The best looking uniforms you see is in Generation Kill, where the department was given strict instructions not to wash the uniforms at all, so that the actors wearing them would naturally be dusting up, sweating and wearing them out progressively through the duration of filming.

I wouldn't say this is the best shot movie ever, but it's an amazing case study of how 24fps suspends audience disbelief, hides imperfections, makes special effects look WAY better, and uses our brains to fill in the gaps.
Here at 60fps it fails to be what our minds expect as "a movie" and starts being treated closer to real life, thus any and every flaw stands out.

This wasn't the run of the mill HFR. This was double the frame rate of normal HFR. That ended up being why this and "Gemini Man" were such massive failures. Both movies had so much in common: both were directed by Ang Lee, both were presented in a format that only a handful of theatres could actually display correctly, and both had no business being shot in that format because it ended up being too much of a distraction.
That being said, I've no doubt it looked amazing in its native format, but it was the digital equivalent of shooting an entire feature film in 15/70 IMAX - a really bad, really wasteful idea.

I think it's interesting to see what works and what doesn't. In 60p, gestures and affects have to be much quicker, more instinctual - especially in a situation such as this. Movements must be less restrained and more reckless (which is harder on both stuntmen and actors alike). Vin makes a hero comment before rushing in... that may or may not work, depending on what it is. I think it seems a bit unnatural here, but since he is in cover, it's ok for him to take the time to talk before acting.
    The good:
The shooting is fantastic. The explosions are fantastic. The rockets work. The soldiers fighting seem totally absorbed in their task, and I believe it. The fight in the tunnel works really well, up to the point where he dies, when you can tell that it's fake.
    The bad:
The two guys who come out of nowhere to snatch Diesel's character, seem unnatural (why didn't anyone spot them? There were dust, but not enough to obscure them... and they never would have attempted something like that, no matter how fanatical they are). When the soldier reaches the wounded vin Diesel... stopping there _in plain view of the enemy_ to have dialogue... that might possibly work(ish) in 24p, but in 60p it sticks out like a sore thumb. The enemy being blown up by the .50 doesn't work at all either (although that particular CGI is probably quite iffy even in 24p).
I still think 60p (or higher) can - provided it's well made - provide an experience beyond what is possible in 24, but I also think its proponents underestimate the challenges that comes with that amount of information. When some things look natural and others clearly don't, you get yanked out of your state of suspended disbelief.

    • @ShreyTyagi

I do not understand why framerate changes your perception of what is happening in these scenes. Like, at all.
Did you actually watch this in 30 fps? What makes it so different to you? The only difference I'm seeing is that is smooth and the other is blurrier and stuttery, but it doesn't change the acting to me at all. I legitimately don't understand how you can reach your conclusion.

    • @Snagabott
      @Snagabott 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Thornskade Fair enough question. As you are alluding to, the factual information of what takes place is obviously not altered. But: take the scene around 2:36 where the soldier runs up to a wounded friendly in the middle of open ground with a trench right next to them. This is the kind of reaction I am expecting next...
      th-cam.com/video/Zx9Amrs5lIg/w-d-xo.html
      th-cam.com/video/WDpOawqg5i4/w-d-xo.html
...but instead, he decides that this is the perfect time and place to sit down and have some dialogue. sigh.
If it didn't already, it probably strikes you too as pretty dumb after I point it out, and would be dumb even in 24 fps. But the issue seems to be that your brain gets conditioned by the smooth pictures and landscapes and explosions and casings flying to think that "yes, there is really a firefight going on there" - in effect, you start to expect perfection. I would call this an action choreography mistake no matter which way you cut it, but judged against the standards of a totally amazing firefight just moments before, it stands out that much more. When the action cannot follow up expectations, your brain stops believing in what's going on. There is clearly no firefight going on around there, in spite of what the movie is insisting.
In addition to reactions needing to be more logical and instinctual; timing must also be tighter. Not just for stunts (which may or may not adversely affect safety), but actors need to hit their mark that much more accurately - not emoting too late (psychopath face), but also not too soon (clearly rehearsed). Their margin for error is that much narrower. The amount of expression needed to convey an emotion changes a bit too. I think method actors will probably have an advantage in hfr, since they tend to rely on their bodies acting once the emotion hits. But make no mistake: it heightens the standard we hold performers to.
The same applies to sets. Hollywood has over the years learned what can be used to fake other materials in set design - but most of them are still of such a type that you could tell it was fake if you saw it in person. It is a necessary evil - both for safety and costs - and it's usually ok in 24fps unless you get very close up shots of that set. Which you won't, because the director planned it out that way (that's why he didn't ask the set people to go get an authentic piece). In 60 or 120 fps, you start noticing. Your brain gets so many angles of the object and with such clarity that it goes "hey, wait a second, that's just painted wood!". The same goes for actor's faces. You can sometimes tell that they are wearing makeup.
So I'm absolutely not in FilmmakerIQ's camp of "24 is _better",_ but I am in the camp of "24 is _easier."_

    • @Thornskade
      @Thornskade 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@Snagabott _But the issue seems to be that your brain gets conditioned by the smooth pictures and landscapes and explosions and casings flying to think that "yes, there is really a firefight going on there"_
I'm glad I'm not suffering from conditioning, but I am convinced the simple reality is that if you were used to movies looking like this, you wouldn't have come up with this odd explanation. I suspect you have simply seen a movie not look like it's suppposed to so you've been thinking about that, which has taken you out of it. And now you're looking for explanations other than the most obvious one: You're not used to it. You don't think "whoa there's really a fight going on there", you're going "huh, this movie doesn't look like other movies. Now I'm consciously thinking about everything to process the differences. Oh look, this scene is pretty stupid, totally wouldn't have noticed at 24 fps."
_timing must also be tighter. Not just for stunts (which may or may not adversely affect safety), but actors need to hit their mark that much more accurately - not emoting too late (psychopath face), but also not too soon (clearly rehearsed). Their margin for error is that much narrower._
This doesn't logically hold up at all. If an actor emotes/acts too soon in a 24 fps film, this _may_ get delayed by a frame and hit the spot. But if they emote/act just a liiittle too late, their emotion is delayed by an entire frame, so it's way too late, rather than just a bit too late as it were in a higher framerate film. Lower framerates don't give you more leeway for acting at all, and the timing of when each frame is captured is effectively random and imperceivable to both actors and directors so you can't account for it to begin with.
_The amount of expression needed to convey an emotion changes a bit too._
I see no logical reason for this. Can you please elaborate on that claim?
_But make no mistake: it heightens the standard we hold performers to. _
Watching these film clips in both 30 and 60 fps, the performance doesn't look any different to me. I have no idea how you would reach that conclusion, other than what I discussed in the first paragraph.
If the framerate was even lower to the point that you no longer perceive motion but rather a string of attached images, I would agree. This does have the effect that the actor's movements don't have to be very "perfect", so to speak. However, at least for my perception 24 fps and 30 fps is already way past the point of only seeing still images. I see the same acting whether it's 24 fps or 120. I would agree that _fast_ movements get masked with motion blur, however from the research I've done on this subject you can achieve similar motion blur shooting at high framerates.
_The same applies to sets. Hollywood has over the years learned what can be used to fake other materials in set design - but most of them are still of such a type that you could tell it was fake if you saw it in person. It is a necessary evil - both for safety and costs - and it's usually ok in 24fps unless you get very close up shots of that set. Your brain gets so many angles of the object and with such clarity that it goes "hey, wait a second, that's just painted wood!". The same goes for actor's faces. You can sometimes tell that they are wearing makeup. _
I can mostly agree with this. I do not believe that you get "more angles" of each object. The angles are the same, the difference between one more inserted frame is fairly irrelevant, and you don't just randomly see more details. A still shot of a set looks the exact same in 1 fps or 120 fps. But what you're saying has truth to it due to stuttering during panning shots or when something is moving by the screen, making it hard to focus on and track something which has movement in 24 fps films, and so while panning shots in low framerate films have always given me eye cancer from all the stutter, it does mean I don't really get to focus on the details of whatever it is that's stuttering by. This is where 60 fps or 120 fps movies definitely have to put in some extra work if they're trying to mask imperfections of a set or of special effects.
I absolutely agree of course that shooting in 24 fps is easier. If not for most of the things mentioned here, then there's definitely more work in post-production, especially for special effects. There's also the fact that these films take up more space and the effort only pays off in cinemas and for the Blu-Ray release, as streaming services do not allow for such high fidelity yet to my knowledge. This is more of a catch-22 though; I would overall prefer to watch films in higher framerates.

A lot of the actors are stiff, choreography is sloppy, and I think the framerate really reveals unsure actions. Special effects could use some work, too, and maybe a greater use of practical explosions and squibs would work really well at a high framerate. That being said, when Vin was on screen, it seemed completely natural and nothing he did took me out of the experience. I think this is just something directors and actors are going to have to learn to work with.
There will likely need to be an animated movie that comes first and proves what is possible at a high framerate. Until directors and actors overcome that learning curve, the majority of shots are going to look more like a play than a movie.

I actually don't mind it. Having gotten more and more into gaming, it's not as jarring as I thought it would be. Feels almost more like a documentary than a film in some parts. I do wonder though if you went with a bolder look in the color grade if that would help make it feel more like a movie. Maybe there is a nice in between you could do. The color was the only thing not working entirely for me.

Why is people been so hard with this kind of video settings and clarity? I've already watched the ones from gemini man and honestly it looks awesome, I know my reference in mobile is a Xiaomi Mi A1 and a Sharp 4k 60 hz tv but still looks amazing, imagine in a better panel. Would this be a perfect example to tell those detractors of this quality "the future is now old men?" I wouldn't mind watching the whole movie like this, it is like you are live, in there and the details are amazing, water drops, explotions, I mean everything!

    • @snails6997

I know, right? Somehow. people hate high FPS movies.
      "Too real"
      "Its not a movie"
      "Too perfect"
      "Its like documentary"
"less perfect of 24 FPS would be nice"
I really dont get them. Coz this looks awesome.
24FPS is there because it the minimum FPS human mind start the movements. More than that, they gonna need bigger film roll for the same duration of clips. Making the cost higher.
Maybe people still doesnt get used to it. Maybe they love the fantasy and the "un-realistic" aspect of usual movies. Might be still need time. Maybe film maker need to get several adaption. Maybe this will be the stuff our grand child can accept. They might gonna say something like "Ugh, 24FPS is such a last millenia"
