Academia never had to change: now it’s dire | Tyler Dewitt | TEDxMIT

  • My father wanted me to become a professor. Instead, as I forged a different path, teaching on TH-cam, developing Virtual Reality, and working outside of higher education, it became clear that his beloved academia is headed for major disruption. Tyler DeWitt works at the intersection of science, technology, and education. He is the creator of one of the most popular instructional channels on TH-cam and is the video author for the newly-released textbook “Interactive General Chemistry,” published by Macmillan Learning. Tyler is a frequent speaker and consultant on technology and the future of education. Tyler is currently the Executive Director of Innovation at Quality Executive Partners, where he works to bring VR and other learning technologies to the life sciences and pharmaceutical sectors. Tyler holds a Ph.D. in Microbiology from MIT. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

      Hank Green is a good suggestion. He just has a different teaching style. He uses animation, humour and talks fast(you could always decrease the vid speed)- he’s definitely entertaining lol, whereas Tyler uses a more traditional method of visual aid to teach, speaks slower and does have some humour peppered throughout his vids-he’s less dramatic than Hank. They are both very knowledgeable an teach the subject well, it just depends on which one suits your learning style best. I watch Hank’s vids to switch it up once in a while🙂

    This is really true. Actually these online class, some teachers are having trouble teaching, and can’t even convey what they should. So most of the students try to learn on their own and go to youtube to learn. Sometimes, we’re just using school to get a degree or grades but actually were learning better with the help of free tutorial videos on youtube. That’s also why sometimes I can see many viewers who joked that their tuition should be payed to the youtubers of the tutorial video.

    The past 22 years I’ve been teaching post-Graduate courses in person. Since moving online and starting my TH-cam channel - I feel I’m better able to help students as individuals carve a better path to their learning goals.
    My hope is that my channel grows to the point where I can purchase some AR tools and develop courses in that area. The possibilities are vast.
    Self-efficacy around leaner-centric education is indeed the future - in fact, my Master’s thesis was on Data-Driven Learner Dashboards to support this self-learning pathway.
    Great video - it speaks to truth.

    I earned my bachelor's degree in statistics (also thanks to videos on TH-cam) and I had already noticed the tendency of professors to follow a standard, automatic pattern: Theoretical lessons almost entirely taken from books, programming sessions and tests. I subsequently enrolled in the master's in Statistics, with the desire to continue with a doctorate. What I had seen in the triennial has sharpened more and more. Lectures as if they were the dictations of books, programming in R or Sas with codes already written and without any desire to dig deep. The result of all this was the loss of motivation for the PhD and the disappointment of the lack of innovation and dynamism. There is a need for change, there is a need to constantly improve the quality of teaching and the relationship with professors.

    College is not about learning required topics. For students, it's about the degree that gets you the job interview, making connections, and learning about life. For schools, it's about money, money, and more money. My retrospective view looking back at my 2012 UC Davis grad.

    • @Akash.Chopra
      @Akash.Chopra 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had to take a health class at Davis to satisfy a GE requirement and one of professors had a great scam running. Her class was basic and monotonous, with the exact same tests every year. Everyone knows it's a guaranteed A+ for students that want to boost their GPA. The trade-off was that you were required to buy the text book that she authored, no copies or sharing allowed. You could not use a copy because you were required to rip certain pages out for a lab, that could not be photocopied, and that was worth 25% of your overall grade. Her textbook was $300 and her classes had 250 people per class x 5-6 sessions per day. She was making close to $500,000 per quarter (and we had 5 quarters with summer school, which she taught as well). She must've made over 2 million per year on that scam, and as far as I know, still does it to this day. Personally, I was happy to pay to money to boost my GPA, but that doesn't make it right or okay.

    Tyler, is that you??? I've used Tyler DeWitt videos for years with my middle school chem students. You have such a gift for reaching students. Thank you thank you! As an educator who is just returning to the classroom this week after a year of remote learning, I have a much greater appreciation for the connections I make in person with my students. I feel like I did OK without actually being in a school building, yet I cannot wait to return!!!

    Parents often have their own plan about how they want their kids to live their life. Your dad had his own, rigid ideas about life and he wanted you to be and think exactly like him because you were his own small project and you were supposed to succeed so he could brag about you. If the child runs off and does his own thing in a different, unknown environment because he can't brag about you anymore. Children need to be courageous enough to do what they want and not what their parents want, to go their own path which fits the ideas of their peers and not those of their parents. That's how progress happens.

    I love that Professor DeWitt is thinking about and acting on innovative ideas that can accelerate and improve our educational models. I believe it is wise, as often as possible, to allow the provider and the consumer to collaborate on defining standards and measures of success. Education is one of the few fields that currently provides very little input from the consumer to define success. I believe the model must change to enable the innovation we must achieve.

    There is a workaround, though it's insufficient: CLEP testing. Depending on the college and the course, many schools will allow students to test out of subjects via the CLEP program. Learn the subject however you like, even on TH-cam, and take the test when you're ready.

      We had different types of courses at my home universities, but for those that were purely lecture + exam you could basically always just take the exam without ever going to the lecture. Often there wasn't even a registration for visiting the lecture, just for the specific exam date you want to go to.

      I imagine you would still be charged for the course you didn’t take if you want credit. Is that right? If so, appalling and not surprising. Even if they give a half-rate, they’d still be dragging in money they didn’t earn.

    I'm taking organic chemistry and my high grade is attributed to your videos. My professor is great but her thick accent combined by her broken English makes really difficult to grasp any content. I'm grateful I can rely on your teachings and learn the material. You're fabulous! Thank you for what you do.
