- In 2012, I chose the unconventional route for most high school graduating seniors and enrolled in community college. What ensued was ridicule from family and friends that only “subpar” students enroll in community college. In fact, my best friends told me that I was “pursuing the worst life plan ever.” Flash forward to 2016, where I’m a current student at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education, with a Bachelor’s Degree from Cornell. The kicker? I did this all while saving $100,000 over my first two years of college. More importantly, community college allowed me to stay home, earn money, and clarify my life goals. Whenever we choose a courageous path - to take a road less traveled - we subject ourselves to what seems like unrelenting criticism and ridicule. While facing the ever rising cost of college all high schoolers should have the courage to be different, and give community college a second look.
Joshua Lafazan became one of the youngest elected officials in the history of New York State when at 18 years of age he was elected to the Syosset School Board of Education, receiving 82% of the vote in May of 2012. Joshua was re-elected in 2015. He is the author of "Political Gladiators: How Millennials Can Navigate the 21st Century Political Minefield and WIN!" In 2016, Joshua graduated with a degree in Industrial and Labor Relations from the Cornell University ILR School. Joshua is currently enrolled at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, where he has been accepted to pursue a Master's Degree in Education Policy and Management.

Community colleges always been in the universities shadow for years. Going to a university is great, but it's doesn't guaranteed you will get a job after you graduate or it's doesn't guaranteed you survive for 4 years in an university. Everyone can be a college student, but very few are college graduate

Honestly nowadays unless you get accepted to like harvard idk why you wouldn’t go to CC. You save money taking classes everyone takes, you get experience with college and you actually have a better idea of what you want to do with your life. By the time you transfer some colleges want you even more. Even if I was the valedictorian of my high school I would go to CC these days. I cannot tell you how many people I know settled for the first college to accept them, changed their major 5000 times and by the end had debt to the ceiling. On top of this most had a hard time finding jobs bc they didn’t go to a top 100 school. I envy many of the people who decided to go to CC saved money transferred to like UC Berkley and end up with less debt a great education and a job almost out of the gates.

unusual coconut a childhood friend of mine sucked in high school. He barely graduated. Because no university would take him he did CC for two years. Now he just got accepted to Cambridge in the UK. Apparently they are upping their international student body in anticipation of brexit. Goes to show how CC is no longer frowned upon. They are real options not just glorified trade schools. Ofcourse there will be snobby schools like Stanford and the top Ivies. But who cares? You can’t say there’s a huge dip in reputation between Berkeley, Northwestern, Michigan, UCLA, Vanderbilt or in his case Cambridge. Especially when you only pay for two years. The Harvard kids can spend their $300,000 all they want. The true smart people find a marketable skill or go to CC and transfer to a good university. Either option leaves little to no real debt.

Kostas Antes before you start community college look at the transfer requirements for that college you want to transfer to. Be in leadership positions at your community college, very important. Take the honors classes for sure they’ll help you a lot.

This should be shown to every high school senior. I remember some of my friends that took AP courses, had 4.0 GPAs, and tons of community work were literally crying and devastated that they didn't get into their dream school. I'm currently in community college and I'm so glad I watched this video.

I did really good in school and I didn't get into my dream school. I got into one which I would really like to but I am not sure we could afford it. I am probably going into cc and then transfer a year or 2 in.

I'm a senior in hs rn and I'm going to community college while all my friends are going to a 4-year uni. It's mentally exhausting thinking I'm the only one in the group not going to a 4-year uni and I feel like I don't know what I'm doing. Honestly, I'm so scared that I'll be doing all this and taking the community route just to end up unmotivated and probably homeless- but my hope is strong enough. I want to go to UCLA or UC Berkeley and study behavioral psychology.. just hope I get there.
Hey girly, I was in your position last year right before the pandemic hit. It gets exhausting trying to break the stigma of going to community college to people, even if it is a great option as well. No one will ever understand your vision as much as you do. You got this and good for you for having the courage to be different than them. CC is amazing though, I promise (even in a pandemic). You save so much money because the first two years at a CC/university are all about taking GE classes that everyone has to take. You can do everything they can do except live there. I hope you get to follow your dream and get to transfer to either of those schools! Do what's best for you at the end of the day, that's all that matters. Sending love, I hope it works out!
I don't know if you are still in a CC but if you are. Keep your grades up take all your GEs/IGETCs and maybe get an AA (not required), do some extracurriculars and you'll do great. I went to a CA CC and got into UCLA and UCSD. I know a group of people who got into UCLA and/or UCB. The UC system has a program to accept CC transfers. What really matters is GPA and ECs, show some leadership skills and you'll flourish. I know a lot of people who went to UCLA who spoke to professor before going, you can find their faculty email online and start a conversation with them, that can help quell some fears. Also, find a strong group of friends at your CC, take an art/preforming art class and make friends doing things. And really looking into student organizations, I did / was an officer in Phi Theta Kappa at my school which is an honor society that doesn't require honors classes but does require a 3.5+ GPA.
The admissions office at UCLA or UC Berkeley could be your greatest cheerleaders. If you are patient, eager, and persistent, you will get on their radar. But you have to perform in the classroom first.

I watched this in 2018 and went the CC route because of it. I barely graduated HS, but I flourished in CC, eventually got into UCLA because I did so well at CC. I think CCs really are the way to go. Also I have emailed Josh Lafazan and he seems really nice and loved to hear that because of his TEDx talk I chose to go to a CC rather than try to get into Uni right after HS. This video helped me so much in HS. It made me happy/confident in my choice to go to a CC instead of Uni.
As someone who's a semester away from graduation at a community college, I loved watching this video. It hurt to see all my friends go to 4-year schools while i was in community college because I didn't have the grades, nor could I afford a 4-year institution. Here I am today, an honors student, in a meaningful major, with so many wonderful resources, knowledge, and peer experiences that I'd never trade for any other experience.
Community college for two years and work then transfer to a public in state school and live at home with no need for a meal plan or a room = no debt
Call it what u will unemployment rate for college grads is 2.5% even if u take out a loan with a small interest rate won’t have any problem paying back in 2018. If u complain about college cost and didn’t go this no sympathy

My neighbor's 2 granddaughters both got degrees at CC with honors. One transferred into Drexel U. and the other got a partial ride to Cornell U.
In my experience, core and introductory courses are better taken at community college than at a university. At universities basic courses are usually taught by Teaching Fellows or Teaching Assistants who frankly would rather be doing anything else. The same courses at community college are usually taught by instructors who are dedicated educators. I worked for a university for 7 years but I've always recommended students take every course they can at community college.
Al Dente community colleges fail at the colleges they later attend because it's so easy to obtain good grades at community college. They learn that it's okay to put stuff off for later and still end up fine. Not all of them, but most.
@@revl6151 I'm going to have to look it up and get back to you or you can..I read a research article not long ago that most students that transfer from a CC have a higher graduation rate from a university than those that go straight to a university. Something to do with classes being to expensive as well as classes to large.
As a student graduating from a community college in a semester, I have to say that this speakers points relating to the benefits community college are spot on. There is so much stipulation between community college and four year universities for little to no reason. I have had friends who went straght to four year college not feeling prepared at all and having the feeling of not getting taught anything. While my time at community college has been beyond amazing. There is so many interesting students/staff you will meet and will learn a variety of subjects without the harassment of declaring a major. Never feel like you are throwing your money away if you are attending a community college.
Community college is becoming more and more appealing. Honestly the way it is set up in California for UC schools it’s actually the smartest choice to make going to CC. I can’t wait I’m applying to 4 UC schools this fall!

@@pinnacle6322 Got accepted to UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara and UC Davis. I ultimately went with UC Davis as I loved the small town vibe and cost of living was cheaper. I owed back 1800 dollars my whole time getting my degree because I decided to take a loan that year. Don’t regret my decision at all and had a fulfilling college experience.

Community college seems like a very good option for me. I screwed up my first two years of hs and as a soon to be junior, I'm scared as my grades are not as good as they can be. I want to be a doctor and starting out at cc seems like a great option.

Definitely. My high grades were poor--lots of F's and unsatisfactory marks; school was just lame and not challenging so I assumed school just wasn't for me.
I went back to school in my late 20s starting at community college. I finished with a 3.7 GPA and went to a 4 year school (3.8) and am completing a master's in Public Policy in two months with equally high marks (the goal is a 3.9 since it would signify school got easier for me the more I advanced)
But even a high school person with subpar grades should apply to community college if they are dedicated to treating it as a clean slate. High school grades matter so little, it's ridiculous. Mostly because education in the U.S is joke overall
I go to a JC and I cannot recommend it enough. To take 12 units (full time) it costs $552 at my jc while at the 4-year CSU I'm transferring to it cost somewhere around $285 a unit. So taking 12 units cost about $3,420. That's just one semester of classes, not the books, not extra fees, dorms or transportation or anything else. Besides that there are so many different people there. There's stay-at-home moms, people taking extra classes for certifications, brand new students, 70 year olds who retired and wanted to learn more. It's amazing how diverse jcs are.
I went to a pretty well off highschool but I wasn't as well off financially as a lot of my classmates so I never entertained the idea of going to an elite school. I debated my entire senior year about JC versus CSU and ultimately decided that JC would be so much better, so much easier, and is the smart option. For a few months I felt left behind almost and there were definitely people who made snide remarks or middle faces when I told him where I was going but I just decided that I wasn't going to put myself or my family in debt for a name.
Yesss!!! Lovely talk Josh, thank you for addressing this topic! I'm all for community college and since I have a close relationship with my family I'm going to commute to cut out dorm expenses, pay for it all myself with fafsa/my waitress job (about $188 per shift) while contributing to bills or groceries; the stigma behind it is illogical and often is spread through genuine ignorance so I never really take it to heart. Older friends/relatives of mine decided to take this route and they are already set career wise with a stable job and enjoyed their experience. You're spot on concerning the various pros; as for the major portion 75% end up changing majors at least once before graduation during university because they discover what they thought they wanted wasn't really what they wanted so its a safety net for many, diversity is as well expected to be heavily prevalent, and of course financially it's a gem- the average tuition for community college being $3,335 (with fafsa its essentially free) while private being $32,405! Facts are facts and they're pretty sweet. From CC I'm going to transfer to a public university near by (only about $8,000 but fafsa helps with $5,000 so more like $2,000-$3,000) so win-win. Not that others shouldn't attend a private university, but for some reason the "prestige" label behind the matter never really appealed to me; college is ultimately what you make of it and in the end I still get my desired degree while saving/not wasting money :)

just took a tour at Capital Community College in Hartford. I'm all in! I think it's pretty much going to be free because I'm poor, then if I ace everything, which I plan to, I will get into whatever school I want to finish my bachelors. Then who knows what! I'm excited about my future for the first time in my life at age 31

To answer your question I am doing great and happy with my decision of going to a community college. I revisited the ideas from this video and I found that they reflect my current view and opinion of CCs. My current viewpoint is something that has evolved over the past four years. The savings in tuition, the ability to explore subjects and classes, and truthfully the "experience" is something that is made by what you are doing with your time. For that matter, CCs are a great choice and something that many should at least consider if they are unsure about their major or mindful of not accumulating so much debt.
I personally had the opportunity to explore other majors, and while this did add semesters to my overall graduation time, there is no need to rush academics. Being able to solidfy your major choice by process of elimination allows for a more confident pick about your future. Furthermore, if you already know what it is you want to study you can breeze past the transfer requirements with the aid of counselors and making sure you're maxing out units/semester to ensure a timely graduation.
Those who dorm, are more likely to make more long-time friends than commuters (at both a CC or university), but at what cost? Personally, I have only made two friends during the past 4 years of college. Friends that I would occassinaly talk to semsesters past our initial meeting. The notion of making friends at college isn't as idealistic as one would imagine. Many students go to class and go home (myself included). Those who dorm have the luxury of having roomates (which is the important point here) who can then introduce to other friend groups and thus your networking increases. Joining clubs is a way to emulate what those who dorm have, or even simpler, forming study groups within your class can pave the way for a friendship with your classmates.

When I know that I am not mentally in a good space to attend a 4 year college and still want to give myself a try and go to school at a community college, I believe that I am still giving myself a chance and letting myself go at my own pace and increase the pace when the time is right for me.

I messed up in highschool and didn't try. By the time I realized I wanted to apply myself in classes I was in 11th grade. So, I go to a community college and, I'm not gonna lie, I'm embarrassed about it. But, then I remembered that I would never be able to afford uni if I got in. My family struggles with money as it is.

I’ve got hundreds of examples of students that have transferred to universities around the country including MIT, Northwestern, Stanford, Naval Academy, West Point and UCLA in the past 6 months! And honestly I’ll take it a step further if you don’t think college is right for you at the moment or don’t want to dive in yet go to the military and earn your degree with one class or two classes at a time online for 4 years then go back to school enroll full time with your GI bill with the right mind set.

I know this is late but anyways . I remember I’m high school some classmates were devastated about college essays, money and ect to apply for their dream school . Me being a first gen college student did not know nothing about anything until my school said hey we need you to apply to community college and I was like ok I guess . Little did I know that Rn I am working on my basics at half the cost of attending a regular university and next year I will be applying to the university most of my classmates applied since the very beginning. I am saving money and learning with non traditional students. It’s not about where you start but where you end or accomplish.

I know professionals that started at community college, transferred, and ended up doing well, some becoming self-made millionaires. I know students that graduated with 3.0s from a mediocre college and went on to places like Georgetown University for graduate school. It's possible.

@apxmachit I really needed to hear this even thought it was not intended for me thank you. I am currently a junior in high school and mainly got Cs and Bs first 2 years. I have been considering law school since the middle of my junior year. As of right now my goal for the rest of junior and senior year is to get all A’s i know i can do it if i work hard and manage my time wisely. As for college i am going to attend community college and my goal is to get a 4.0 (anything else i should consider?). After cc i want to transfer to law school, specifically im gravitating towards constitutional, and personal injury law, i know it might be way to early to start thinking about it all and things may change but am now starting to have high standards for myself and my future. I understand a big part that law schools look into is your LSAT and overall GPA. do you or ur mom have any advice? would really appreciate it, have a wonderful rest of your week!
She shouldn't say "All students regardless of their GPA, social academic stand point should consider community college." There's no way that you go accepted to Top university in the nation and then hand it down to attend community college. It's impossible. Community college is considerably cheaper than 4-year university, but most of students there aren't doing well in high school. So, they may take it as a second chance. I don't want to say this, but some of them are dump.

i have a 4.33 gpa and in the top 5 percentile of my school but cannot afford to go straight to university so i’m going to community college, i’m just bummed bc i feel like i worked so hard for nothing and additionally i won’t get the whole college experience :(

I strongly relate! I’m going to cc though. At first I felt disappointed because I worked so hard to not even get accepted to my top school, but then realized it’s a blessing in disguise. God has a plan for everyone. With cc you can be in smaller classes, save money, join clubs, and work. These are all helpful. I was also sad when I thought about losing the college experience, but realized that regardless I would have a fun time in college when I transfer. The best days are ahead of us and don’t feel ashamed for missing out. Because you aren’t missing out. If you want to party just crash the closest state school parties and all. Hope this helps! Yeah, this is a great idea if you live in New York. If you're attending a tech program in a lesser known city, you are more likely to end up in a class of mostly teenage white boys, while being lectured at by mostly teachers who couldn't get a better job (bar a few gems), while the college tries to rip you off and neglects its own HR problems.
If it's not working for you, go ahead and do what I did: leave. Leave before they suck away your money and time.

You should try Golden West community college. In state tuition is pretty cheap and you get automatic admission into one of the University of California or up to 23 different California state Universities after 2 years. If you don't live in California, the school can help with applying for California resident and you can get in state tuition your second year.

I have a question? Can a person really take online classes from home with out ever stepping foot in college? A former friend of mine said she's taking photography classes online to be photography i was like how you gonna gonna graduate with out stepping food in college kinda like a home school deal. Not sure if that's possible in the college world.

This is pointless if you want to be an engineer. Most community colleges don't have engineering programs, so you you have to pay tuition for 4 year engineering program at a different school, on top of the loans from community collage
You DON'T need to pay student loans at a community college silly YOU can pay for that with a simple JOB at Mcdonalds DUH smh.
So you take your electives at the community college then TRANSFER to a school with the engineering.

Not true. You can complete all of your prerequisites at community college. Both my boyfriend and I went to community college and transferred to UC Berkeley (EECS and Political Science).
That is growing field. The CC I attended is building a multi million dollar facility for engineering students and have teamed with NASA to help students with internships.

All the math, physics and GE classes will transfer. As an engineering major you have to take a lot of Math Physics and GE courses.

StarWarsNerdy02 Not true. I got accepted to tons of great schools but I will most likely attend a community college, with the hopes of transferring to an elite school. I’m sure it’s that way for many people but there are increasing number of people who view community college an an easier, more feasible way to reach their goals.
Sometimes it’s a monetary issue or a home life issue
