The way I interpreted Bojack’s struggle with acting, and his “new outlook” in this episode was, he was already playing a role. His cheery overly positive way of talking, and even his inflection was reminiscent of his role in Horsin’ Around. He did the same thing in beginning of Sarah Lynn’s introduction episode. He wasn’t making any meaningful positive changes in his behavior or lifestyle, he was just acting the part. He doesn’t make the effort to change or improve, he puts his effort into appearance of change. It’s a show. It’s a performance. Wether he realizes it or not.
The guy with the braids moving the couch at the beginning was the prisoner who stabbed the guy in the episode where Todd went to jail (1x6) and he was sitting in the audience at the ghostwriter convention at the end of Downer Ending (1x11). What a redemption arc.
such a good episode this and love that it lead to a full on 10 minute Normie discussion. really get an insight into Bojack's troubled upbringing and that a lot of his behaviour comes from crippling insecurity. Plus the goofy humour mix of the show's world is spot on.

People say that the hardest part of changing is admitting you need to, but the real hardest part is actually going through with it especially when everyone tells you that there is no point while also progressively hating you more and more because now you don't change your actions. Yes, Bojack does horrible things but the people around him aren't so amazing influences either.

Honestly, rewatching the bit at 9:40 is put in an *entirely* different light given what we learn about Beatrice in Season 4. She likely *was* genuinely proud of him, but couldn't express it.
