Anthony Parraguirre This Song and Kiss the Go-Goat is supposed to have been written by Papa Nihil (Emeritus Zero) in ‘69, according to Ghost’s Chapter 8: Kiss the Go-Goat and the whole TH-cam series they’ve made.
It's the sound and style from the early sixties, like the mersey beat. Tobias created a musical freedom with Papa Nihil as the first Ghost singer from the sixties. The story says the put out a single "Satanic panic" in the sixties and rereleased it in 2019. So funny if you've seen the the video series.
Nah, this 2 songs (from EP) are clearly reference to Fire of Unknown Origin from BOC, its like almost straight taken from this album, and it was early 80. Seriously, go check any song from this album, its straight Ghost.
My favorite song from the '69 vault. I always took Mary On A Cross to be a reference to marijuana and the free love and drug use of the late 60's and early '70's. Plus marijuana can be know to "tickle you internally". Also Ghost had a female back up singer for all of the Prequelle album cycle tours.
I mean....you obviously read that it was exactly what this song was about. It's okay to just say that, and give props to Tobias for such genius wordplay.
You go down, like Mary goes down on a cross. Saying this girl he is with goes down on her knees, like Mary goes down on her knees praying in front of Jesus "on a cross". That's the way it has always come across to me, since the song has these sexual elements to it.
I love you guys so much, you're just the cutest couple 😄 I'm a really big Ghost fan and I've enjoyed all of your song reviews! I can definitely appreciate that you guys are willing to view their music in an artistic sense and not just literally. Keep up the good work, you guys freakin' rock 😄
Nice review guys! Even though I'm not raised a christian (not really) it's always nice to watch your videos to learn new things about where a lot of western beliefs, traditions and thought processes actually came from (of course a lot of it came from the Bible, which I never read but of course inevitably influenced me quite a lot). Did you know Ghost actually has two girls (Ghoulettes) in the band now? They're not on this record (this is only Forge's vocals layered on top of one another) but one of the Ghoulettes sings backing vocals live so go watch some of their recent awesome liveshows with the all new Papa Emeritus IV!
His reaction listening to the song is literally how I feel listening to Ghost. I absolutely love them, but another part of my mind is always hesitant since my parents raised me to be Catholic. If only Ghost wasn’t so damn catchy...
My parents raised me Christian and I don't feel bad at all for liking Ghost because they can't control the way you think and who you like. You do you man
I just love him because he always misinterpret something in the lyrics and goes from there into a completely different direction than it actually was ment to be xD
It's a spoof on 60s music and in the Ghost mythology this is the long lost single of an earlier papa that failed as portrayed in the Kiss the Go Goat video. And the line "Mary on a" is sung just like marijuana in the hippie vibe of the 60s.
One way I can think of how the line "Mary on a cross" could make sense in a Christian context is that Mary was there when Jesus was crucified and had to watch her son be tortured to death. So you could say that she felt such empathy for her child's suffering that she was on the cross with him in spirit.
This was my first interpretation when I first heard the song. Of course it changed after I read the lyrics and got invested in the band, but yeah, I thought it was poetic at first.
I only occasionally watch review/reaction videos, but I just wanna say that I appreciate when people don't constantly pause the videos a million times while watching/listening.
The reason why many reactors do that is cause of copyright. I'm surprised this video hasn't gotten hit by a claim. Since it was the whole son without pause and critique during the actual song.
I'm a Protestant Christian. I'm absolutely in love with Ghost. And I honestly think they're more christ like than most christian churches, let alone Catholicism itself. I find that blasphemy is more apparent in "righteous" peoples because they cant even follow their own strict rules. It evokes perversion and temptation to conform completely to modesty, and creates hateful lust for the pleasures of the flesh. Much like the priest from Disneys Hunchback of Notre Dame
@@obergrupenfuhrer2359 have fun with that mentality. I don't think there is salvation in any church whatsoever. Only through your own personal awakening and humbling. Church can't teach you that. open hands only receive when they stop holding them out to spiritual gatekeepers, and instead bring their hands to their chest and speak to the sky.
The context of the Seven inches of satanic panic release is the imitation of a sixties sound. So yeah, maybe marijuana might be a topic. The lore is - an old papa emeritus character - in his youth - wrote and sang this song and Cardinal Copia revived it.
I would love to see your reaction to the most mysterious song on the internet. Basicly no one knows anything about it besides that it was played on german radio in the 80's
Ghost is such a great band live. I have seen them live 4 times including their first US Tour 13 Dates of Doom where they played the Opus Eponymous album in its entirety.
Such an amazing song!! Have seen it live in Helsinki, Finland last year and they do have two female musicians (keyboards and backup vocals) who make this song sound incredible ❤️

Another Christian here. I’m starting to like this song based off the melody, but I’m very skeptical because of the lyrics (mostly because of the band). If it were written by a different band or had changes to the lyrics, I’d jam to this song repeatedly.
@@garyking3389 is it ok to listen to songs like these as a christian idk cuz i love it but i dont want to listen to it if it has a bad meaning cuz i dont want to disrespect God yk?
@@mathildahernandez7438, That’s where I’m at, too. I’ve asked my pastor through text if it is okay to listen to a song like this even if the band may be satanic, and he advised to listen to other songs. “There are other songs to listen to” he said. But it can be confusing because I’ve listened to Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean (about sex) and he was a man of God. He went to Church and believed in God, too. Edit: And technically this song was written carefully to try and piss off some Christians. I’m not pissed (slightly disappointed), but it’s band members are quite literally dressed up as pastors wearing upside down crosses (which supports the Anti-Christ. And that is something you shouldn’t ever do). One of the few reasons I even bother listening to this is because I can see this as a background song for a fight scene in a movie (and I’m a movie freak).

I absolutely love this song, the lyrics, the music, the vocals.... Every single thing. Im a student of psychology and therefor philosophy and theology and i enjoyed your take on it. But as an ex christian i thoroughly enjoyed your discomfort at times. Youll have to forgive me for that one.
It's interesting that you mention Evangelism and its views on female sexuality, because Ghost in their songs are actually known to be very vocal against this kind of thought-process / religious view. Many of their lyrics are about objecting this kind of suppression of female sexuality, or the views of it being "evil" or "satanic". Their second album, especially, is largely almost themed around this subject.
During the last Ghost show I saw, Tobias was looking straight at a dude puffing on some weed in the crowd during the quiet part of the song at the end, and he goes, "You go down just like Mary on a... Marijuaaaaaaaana crooooooooss!" 😅😅😅😅
I always thought it was about a relationship. Mary on a cross= woman that had something bad happen ( like Mary being crucified) if you think about it like that, the song could make sense that way as well.
Theory: Mary is on the cross in place of Jesus during the Crucification of Jesus. The song (with Cardinal Copia/Papa IV) is also about his mother, Sister Imperator, standing in front of the gun for her child against Nihil. Nihil wanted Cardinal gone, and thought since he wasn't an Emeritus that he wasn't fit for the role... But the Clergy is supposed to be a vote, not Jacksonian passing of office to family and friends. Nihil was draining the power and potential from all of his children. Not to mention the murders of I, II, and III.

I find it kinda interesting how Vin, at least when discussing sexuality and relationships, has no problem with questioning conventional wisdom - but he doesn't ever extend that to questioning his own understanding. He just assumes everyone thinks of the same things as virtuous, as it were. It's almost as if Vin thinks people are autonomous but doesn't conceive of people extending their own autonomy in directions Vin wouldn't. AJJ - Big Bird
While ghost doesn't have female vocalists they have two female band members! One playing they keytar and one playing a piano(I think it's a piano). They're called the Ghoulettes. ALSO the background vocals in this song are done by one of the Ghouls who have a golden high and buttery voice. He is referred to as Aether by fans
AYYYYEE it finally happened after months of suggesting, love you guys ❤❤ Also, the song is based around the late 60s and early 70s. In the Ghost story, Papa Nihil (the original papa emeritus) wrote the two songs from this album. This is just more backstory for the band really. You guys need to watch the "Chapters" videos to better understand it. This song was about getting high off weed
Its funny, because they are satirical in their music. Not true Satanic music. Forge uses symbolism to relate to his affinity to mock the Catholic Church. But, Behemoth would be an example of a Satanic band.
Don’t think they get triggered, almost all their videos, you don’t ever see them cursing on the bands and being mad at the lyrics. Seems like they just give their opinion of what the songs mean, never heard them Talk bad about any bands they hear. I actually love hearing them talk about what they think. It’s very addicting though, I agree lol
Haha it,s all a joke with Ghost music They like to make Christians angry haha 😂 and you fall for it They are Anarcist band and beleve there are no haven or hell.
Since the song is about weed I think the "bloody Mary" just refers to the drink. Like, weed is not just another party substance, it's something "more special" since it's not alcohol which is the legal party substance.
As a Christian myself, I find this song rather really catchy and a banger to listen to, and I find it pretty creative how Ghost uses different techniques to refer to marijuana and whatnot. I swear if I get one more comment of someone telling me how much of an ignorant piece of shit I am, i'm removing my comment lmao

There is a heaven and hell, and God saves! Listening to this music is not a Christian activity. Don't call yourself Christian, you don't follow the book, and I guess, have never read it
Just fot the record, when Ghost are singing that line-Not just another Bloody Mary, they mean the cocktail ,,Bloody Mary,, A Bloody Mary is a cocktail containing vodka, tomato juice, and other spices and flavorings including Worcestershire sauce, hot sauces, garlic, herbs, horseradish, celery, olives, salt, black pepper, lemon juice, lime juice and celery salt...nothing to do with a Queen Mary I of England.
I think this song takes place in the 60’s along with the kiss the go-goat song with the “original” papa and this is the album that he made as the Ghost front man (in a story line perspective) and this is the song he wrote for the sister (what i assume to be his girlfriend or wife in kiss the go-goat) and he’s singing this song go her after she walked out on him when he kissed the girls at the concert of go-goat. And he’s remembering everything that they have gone through
It’s rather ambiguous could be about weed could be about giving head and finger blasting a chick. But weed is the more logical answer given the fact the song “came out” in ‘69.
As a Christian I do not judge anyone or their talent, even if they are using to "piss of Christians" that others are saying. (Know I am not saying that, I read that on others comments.) Cool thing I like about it confirms that the band Ghost and those who are fans are subconsciously confirming they believe that God and His son Jesus is real. Reason is you cant believe in satan without believing in my Christian God, because God created satan, his name was Lucifer and was the most beautiful creature He created. The Bible says Lucifer was covered in diamonds, ruby's, sapphires, onyx, and when he lifted his wings the most beautiful music filled the heavens. Unfortunately he wanted to be as equal as God and was kicked out of heaven and that is why evil exist. Think about it, I don't think God wanted to ban His most beautiful creature but he could not have a rival stirring up division. Why do u think the human race is divided. So saying all that bands like Ghost dont bother me at all and I think they are super talented and can jam out. What I dont get is why they want to "piss of Christians?" I dont want to piss of Ghost or the fans. I love all people and were all created the same and was created with love by the Heavenly Father God, to spread love and show love to everyone. So why do people want to hurt Christians. God doesn't want to hurt you! He loves you and wants to heal your pain and give you hope. Mind blower...God even loves satan, but he has a holy plan for His creation and Lucifer who we know as satan wants to change that. So unfortunately God has to separate Himself from that. Question....if you have a plan and it is going to bring change, love, peace, unity, and make this world a better a place, but someone doesn't want to go along with your plan, what would you do? You would separate your self and move forward with your plan. That's all God and His son Jesus is doing and if you read the bible I think he wanted Lucifer to help carry out that plan, but he decided to make his own. Anyway just my interpretation of the situation, go ahead and marinate on that. To everyone much love and peace from our Father in heaven and His Son Jesus.
I am a man of faith and this band is my favorite. Jesus came for the sinner not for the righteous, and it’s just entertainment people in my mind it’s no different then watching a movie

As a Catholic, and having done basic study of the bible (I don't claim to know it by rote!), it is mentioned that Jesus had siblings, so one could assume that she & Joseph did the deed after Jesus' was born. She remained a virgin until after his birth. I know there's always religious zealots that 'choose' to think she remained a virgin her entire life - but to me, it seems ridiculous. Joseph did abide by God's request to not consummate their marriage until after Jesus came, and he was good to his word, but she was his wife, and likely wished to sire a family by his own making! The song has so many nuances to it, and with the Ghost 'lore' can certainly be taken in so many ways. I love it! This song totally rocks. Saw them live last October, and they absolutely killed this piece!
Catholic here, no she and Joseph didn't have other children. I don't know what kind of bible reading have you been doing, but that's not what the Church has taught since the beginning lol
@@kp9894 both books of Matthew and Mark mention his siblings. Brothers by name, and sisters unnamed. Very well aware of church teachings keeping Mary a virgin before, during & after Jesus' birth. As mentioned in my post, one could assume. It's never explicitly said in the New Testatment either way, we truly don't know.
I found this article in Louder Sound interesting: "Forge himself has been loathe to strip away the mystery, though he admitted one his daughter’s friends had heard the song was “perverted”. Speaking to Mastodon’s Brann Dailor on a recent livestream, the singer explained: “There are multiple layers in the lyrics that it might be important for people to understand. The chorus is written very tongue in cheek of course. ‘Go down’ doesn’t necessarily mean as in a 69 sense of the word… it can also mean go down as in go down in history, your own ascent. “Mary doesn’t necessarily mean Mary, mother of Jesus,” he continued. “It might mean Mary Magdalene, the proclaimed whore who might have been the wife of Jesus - just as a symbol for someone who came off as one thing but actually had other intentions and did something else. Someone who’s miscredited.” He went to reveal that the song was “more about friendship and how, together with someone else, you might have been something at one point and then you ended up just not being like that.”."
I love watching this channel because Vin always likes to go very deep into things even if its completely unnecessary and Sori very much sticks to the surface level of what shes hearing. Usually they're both right in their own way. With certain songs Vin looks too deep into things, and Sori doesnt look deep enough. And with others. They're both at least partially right with what they feel the songwriter is talking about. And in the end we get a very balanced review of whatever song they may have listened to. Its like the critics VS. the audience member. Both opinions are extremely valuable and necessary in the world of reviews/critiques. Also I think a lot of people would say the audiences opinion ( aka Soris opinion) isn't as deep/necessary/thought out as the critics opinion, but I completely disagree with that notion. Vin isn't wrong for the way he approaches analyzing music and Sori isn't wrong for the way she analyzes music.

I agree! That's how I took it.
Yea. That's what I always thought. I don't get the marijuana themes people are commenting about.
Ghost - Witch Image
Definitely!
Awesome song. That chorus pops in my head all the time :D
We've been asking for this one for like a year xd
YES! Probably my favourite Ghost song
My favourite Ghost song (and trust me, it’s hard to pick one)
27:37 they have 2 female band members live, and one of them does amazing backup vocals! :)
The nameless ghouls are awesome
The female ghoulletes, one name is Cirrus and one is Cumulus !!!
well Mad Gallica and Laura Scarborough are talented .. :) kudos to the ghoulets persona
Have been playing this song none stop for the past 48 hours. Beautiful!
I wish they'd listen to Pro Memoria 😂🤦♂️
Dude this song and dance macabre is soo catchy too!
My parents raised me Christian and I don't feel bad at all for liking Ghost because they can't control the way you think and who you like. You do you man
Their songs are meant to be attractive to the ear but corrosive to the soul

Imo more along the lines of early to mid 70s id say...

@@josephdhinojosa yeah i can see that also.
They have it like a story! Like when Papa nihil was young and singing. So Ghost has a story.
@@josephdhinojosa nice!
Him being triggered is kinda funny. I really hope they now know the true meaning of the song.
I just love him because he always misinterpret something in the lyrics and goes from there into a completely different direction than it actually was ment to be xD
@@TheKartoffel101 I've only seen a handful of videos and already picked up on that.
That made actual sense
This was my first interpretation when I first heard the song. Of course it changed after I read the lyrics and got invested in the band, but yeah, I thought it was poetic at first.
I only occasionally watch review/reaction videos, but I just wanna say that I appreciate when people don't constantly pause the videos a million times while watching/listening.
The reason why many reactors do that is cause of copyright. I'm surprised this video hasn't gotten hit by a claim. Since it was the whole son without pause and critique during the actual song.
My favorite Ghost song♥️thank you guys so much🤘
I'm a Protestant Christian.
How do you like He Is?
The song is blasphemous
There is no salvation outside the Catholic Church
@@obergrupenfuhrer2359 have fun with that mentality. I don't think there is salvation in any church whatsoever. Only through your own personal awakening and humbling. Church can't teach you that. open hands only receive when they stop holding them out to spiritual gatekeepers, and instead bring their hands to their chest and speak to the sky.

99% sure the song is about weed. Mary on a = marijuana :) reread the entire song with that in mind

#vinandsorineedweed
The context of the Seven inches of satanic panic release is the imitation of a sixties sound. So yeah, maybe marijuana might be a topic.
The lore is - an old papa emeritus character - in his youth - wrote and sang this song and Cardinal Copia revived it.

Knowing this song got wildly popular this year, I wanted to see some angry people reacting to it for a laugh. BuTtTtTt, what i received was 10x better. You guys are some awesome
This song is so special. It takes you to a place you could never even think off
I'm a Christian but i like the song not for the words but for the melody .. it's so beautiful
Edit:
And technically this song was written carefully to try and piss off some Christians.
@@garyking3389 yeah and i heard that is about marijuana,so they played with the words ..if you think about it "Mary on a" and "marijuana"sound so similar
@@Giulia-om2gl, I’m just very skeptical because some Christians don’t like the sound of it (my pastor for example) and some of them do. And some, like me, is in that grey area in between. I mean no disrespect to any other Christians or to God just by listening to it, but one of the only few reasons I like it is because (like you said) the melody is pretty good (and by that, I mean it’s quite beautiful). I’m okay with the lyrics (not all of them), but that’s it for me.
Marijuaaaaaaaana crooooooooss!"
😅😅😅😅
Ghost can sound like a 60s band and still work. Great band! 🇸🇪
Beatles
It’s about drugs
There absolutely were female vocals. There are now two "Ghoulettes" in the band. They play keyboards and sing live.
Is it wrong if I'm Christian and OBSESSED with the song...?
I see nothing wrong with that
If you felt tempted you probably shouldn’t

i first thought it was some girl's name- Mariana Mariana cross lol

As a Christian I love Ghost. been a fan for 3 years, you should also check out NIGHTWISH they are a Finish Symphonic Metal band.

Been waiting for this one for a long time! Glad you're reacting to some Ghost and glad you enjoyed the song
AYYYYEE it finally happened after months of suggesting, love you guys ❤❤
Also, the song is based around the late 60s and early 70s. In the Ghost story, Papa Nihil (the original papa emeritus) wrote the two songs from this album. This is just more backstory for the band really. You guys need to watch the "Chapters" videos to better understand it. This song was about getting high off weed
Ghost is SUCH an underrated band, their live shows are INCREDIBLE
watching a religious couple getting triggered by satanic band, my new addiction :D
GET TRIGGERED???? WTF DUDE THEY'RE SO CALM ABOUT IT
How are they triggered? They're so calm lol
Yo that documentary review sounds interesting, can’t wait
Since the song is about weed I think the "bloody Mary" just refers to the drink. Like, weed is not just another party substance, it's something "more special" since it's not alcohol which is the legal party substance.
I saw that smile of intrigue on her face when Papa said “tickle you internally.” He is quite the taint tickler, after all.
Lol I'm a Christian too and I understand the lyrics are probably about Marijuana but I listen to it in a different way, thats the fun part about music
Lol what even is Christianity u don't even defend your own religion how weak can your faith be
@@umarahmed1187 You just sound salty that there are Christians that don't take so much offence to a song that was intended to offend the religion lmao. It says alot about society. I'm simply not giving them what they want, is that so hurtful towards people like you? 😂
Tobias said it’s not necessarily about the Virgin Mary
You're a fake Christian, we aren't supposed to have filthy mouths, or love worldly things, especially, sex, music, and blasphemy. Making fun of religious significant things is blasphemy.
I don’t get addicted to songs easily but wow it caught my vocal chords easily and I see nothing wrong that 😂
I think this song takes place in the 60’s along with the kiss the go-goat song with the “original” papa and this is the album that he made as the Ghost front man (in a story line perspective) and this is the song he wrote for the sister (what i assume to be his girlfriend or wife in kiss the go-goat) and he’s singing this song go her after she walked out on him when he kissed the girls at the concert of go-goat. And he’s remembering everything that they have gone through
From what I understand, "virgin" is a mistranslation from original to Greek. Original term meant young woman.
Looking forward to the commentary on the Hail Satan? documentary, TST guys are awesome
It’s double entendre for marijuana grass, Mary on a Cross marijuana grass. That’s what he says at the end of the live version.
Mary went down on her knees before the cross. So she went down like Mary "on'" the cross.
Nah, Mary on A cross is a clever way of saying marijuana cross.

I thought it was about a bad relationship, no matter how much you like one another it’s a toxic relationship that always goes bad
Ghost is my praise music. It gives me the feeling of a church that is all accepting.
I am a man of faith and this band is my favorite. Jesus came for the sinner not for the righteous, and it’s just entertainment people in my mind it’s no different then watching a movie
Masterpiece...🇸🇪
You are 100 percent spot on about the Stranger things soundtrack 80’s Vibes. Should so rock you like a hurricane by the Scorpions since its on there :)
That Mary was a perpetual Virgin is a DOGMA. You are not a Catholic if you reject that
Catholic here, no she and Joseph didn't have other children.
I love her face when it goes " i will tickle you internally"... oh yea, you heard that right. And something tells me you know exactly what thats about
They actually do have female vocalists on the band.
You're gonna LOVE their new video
Ghost -Witch Image. I did a whole analysis of this song and entire album on my channel. Would love to hear your thoughts !
I found this article in Louder Sound interesting:
"Forge himself has been loathe to strip away the mystery, though he admitted one his daughter’s friends had heard the song was “perverted”.
Someone who’s miscredited.”
He went to reveal that the song was “more about friendship and how, together with someone else, you might have been something at one point and then you ended up just not being like that.”."
Please do Pro Memoria next!! A beautiful song by Ghost and I’d love to see your reactions :D
