    Thanks Michelle,I will think to use my watercolour pencils more than I have been. One thing I do know, this is beyond basic but it is great to have an electric or battery sharpener. You waste much less pencil and get a really good point if you wish. You can buy a good battery sharpener for about $17 in Canada, so it will not break the bank. Regular pencil sharpeners screw up your pencils In my experience.

    You may not see this, but I just had to comment that I am finding "new" treasures on your channel daily. I have only worked in watercolor, but so many were banging on about Derwent Graphitint water soluble pencils, I treated myself and gave them a try. Since I know nothing about pencils, after I looked at some reviews/demos of the product, I checked out your channel and you did not disappoint! One of the videos you mentioned the difficulty of using a very fine brush for watercolor. I have a 3-0 I rarely use, and the pencils are a great alternative for animal hair. So, as you might say, cheers for that. Paul Hopkinson ("the Devon artist") does incredibly detailed animal paintings. He is great, but my personal preference is a more painterly approach. Anyhoo, to get the very fine lines he uses "two hairs and air", which is quite a laborious process.

    What about Derwent Inktense watercolor pencils? PS THANK YOU for your videos. As I’ve said in past comments; I actually started “real” painting by learning traditional Chinese Brush Painting. My eldest, a graphic artist, has done mainly Western style watercolors. We are both TRYING to find a happy mix of the two..but frequently find the Chinese pigment rocks and powders; as well as Xuan paper and even the brushes..very, VERY different. The Inktense pencils seem to have much more in common with the Chinese pigments..or even my ink sticks.

    Hello from Japan Michelle! I’m starting to learn watercolor and I have a set of watercolor pencils and a small watercolor half pan set so your tutorial was Very helpful. Thank you so much!
    One question, in the last mini demo on fur, you used a hard acrylic brush on watercolor paper, wouldn’t that brush damage the paper? I would appreciate your help on understanding this as I always have heard Never use non watercolor brushes on watercolor paper.❤

    • @IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber
      @IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As long as your paper is good quality, watercolor paper is very sturdy. You can even scratch with a knife or sand paper to get various effects. The thicker the paper the tougher, and cotton paper is more resiliant than wood pulp paper.

    Wow that’s lots of interesting intense details and textures to add to my arsenal. Great tips & tricks to keep in handy. So if I use watercolor pencils with my watercolors, do I label my painting as a watercolor or a mix media painting? I am never sure about that. With colored pencils, mixed media is sure for listing. Thanks for sharing this wonderful informational video with us.

    • @IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber
      @IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's no correct answer, I have known watercolor societies accept acrylics on paper as watercolor. If the majority of the painting is watercolor, that's what I would call it. I feel it needs a significant amount of another media to count as mixed, and watercolor pencils are watercolor in any case :-)

    This is a really helpful video, thank you! And the result is awesome! The only thing I was a bit disappointed in was that we didn‘t see what colors you put in on the rest of the petals. The picture is really beautiful and I’d love to recreate it (or try to 😬)… but with the multiple colours on the lower Petals it is a bit guesswork.

    Thank you so much….loved this tutorial….new to watercolour. Can you use watercolour pencils over a pen and ink drawing?

    • @IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber
      @IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, absolutely, ink can block colour though, if you are just using line drawing it won't matter too much but if you were to spread the ink over large areas with a brush (bottle ink as opposed to a liner pen) it might resist the watercolour.

  • @ann-or6ev

    Michele can we mix watercolour paint with Acrylic paint? I.e. using Acrylic white to lighten a watercolour paint? It's easy to purchase large Acrylic titanium white but not so easy to purchase it in watercolour.

    • @IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber
      @IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Probably not. You can certainly use acrylic on top of dried watercolour. Or white acrylic ink. But they have quite different binder compositions and you may compromise the structure of the acrylic paint if you mix it with watercolour. Titanium white is usually quite easy to find, you may see it labelled Gouache, which can be mixed with watercolour. As long as it isn't Acrylic Gouache (which is acrylic).

    • @kristinamariaarts
      @kristinamariaarts 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber Thank you Michelle that's most helpful. I use quite a lot of white to mix different tones, so go through small tubes quite quickly. Large tubes are quite hard to find in the UK but Acrylics are plenty. I didn't know Gouache was watercolour based. Though I take your point as long as it's not Acrylic based. I will look for this instead. Thank you so much. Xx

      Ps, things are still sketchy wonky here in ny you have to literally make a appt for a updated drivers license if you want to have one to cross the border, before you'd used to walk in to dmv..(dept of motor vehicle) and get in line take a picture, fill out sheet paper of questions pay some money, two wks later get drivers license. Now apts only which limits people getting advanced licenses, and that's even if the postmaster general( 45's personal dismantler of p.o.) doesnt shut down our mail service to a few days a week mail, like covid isn't bad enough now people cant get food delivered, goods and medicine. Birthday cards and condolences cards. Its a completely dystopia world here in usa. When you cant find lysol and other goods to knock down germs your going old school with vinger and baking soda..lol thank you for the kind words,where my husband works his company today hes union has to tell 100 people they are getting permanent layoff I'm praying that Biden gets elected to right america so people can keep their roofs over their heads and health ins and food and cleaning supplies...

    Hello Michele, I'm wondering what kind of board are you using? I assume it is a kind watercolor board, but what brand is it? As first look, it doesn't look like it would allow wc to absorb or move. Also, will your new formulated colors be distributed in the US? Thank you, Sherry

      Yes they will be for sale from Jackman's UK, and they ship worldwide :-) If I am working on loose paper, it's just on a ply or mdf board, nothing special, I cut them myself. For my own work I stretch watercolour paper onto the same type of board with gummed tape.

    I just started really playing with the watercolor pencils and charcoals, incorporating them into my watercolor paintings. I am from a mixed media background and now I am obsessed with watercolors which I had not really used for the last 30 years. My favorite trick is the daisy center, I am currently trying it out on a miniature sunflower painting I am doing to mount on a card. I'm doing it on 300 lb cold press and it is the size of a playing card (ATC). Thank you for all you do.

    Ohh how I’d love to see some of your paintings. I can only imagine how beautiful they must be. Is there a way we ca see your art work?

    Very informative. I haven't tried watercolour yet - but these are awesome hacks.

    I really learned a lot watching this video. I have done realistic colored pencil drawings and a few oil paintings. I am new to watercolor and watercolor pencils. This is exciting new territory for me. Thanks again👍😊

    Love all these techniques, thankyou. Can you tell me how you get such a lovely sharp point on your pencils? I was told the best way was with a razor, but it's not easy!

      I actually just use one of those turn handle sharpeners made by Helix. It can be hard with some brands and razors don't work if the lead is too soft.
