The best tip for me, which could be told to me each time I paint is to use very little blue into yellow at a time. Have you tried cadmium yellow and Payne’s gray? You get a very deep shadow green, or a realistic green for nature. I have pages of charts mixing greens in my sketchbook. I have even used mars black to make a granulating green, something like Jadeite from Daniel Smith. Thank you for all your tips, I do follow you.❤️

Rowland Hilder, the late watercolour landscape painter, related a tale about how John Constable achieved the natural greens in his famous paintings. Apparently Constable used a mixture of lamp black and lemon yellow to portray the trees, hedgerows and fields in his wonderful works. This caused Hilder to refer to the mix as "Constable Green" which, in my view, is an apt description of the gorgeous hues provided by this combination. Consequently, I use lamp black instead of any blue hue when reproducing the greens of nature.

WOW ! This tutorial is one that I really needed. It was never explained to me before the differences of mixing before painting on paper versus mixing after putting paint on paper and the different effects, in such a clear manner. I mean innately, I understood it, but having it shown to me in such a thorough way has been fantastic.
I’m definitely saving this tutorial for later review. Because there is so much information about color mixing and the different paints’ inherent qualities, I will need to review this tutorial multiple times.
Did I mention that green is my most favorite color……..now, I can say favorite colorS.

So many good points in this video. I believe that green is the hardest color to get right in a painting. Like you said many landscapes use too similar greens. Not enough difference in value on the kind of greens. Nature is filled with so many.

It's so weird how your technique videos pop up in my recommendations just when I need them. I'm taking a watercolor foundations class, and the painting I'm working on now is a parakeet with lots of lime green, a color I don't have yet. I tried mixing it using the blues and yellows I have, but started with blue and never could get the right color. After watching this, I mixed it right up with no trouble. Thank you!

This is such a great video and is just what I needed! I finally have a professional set of watercolours (12 half pan D.S.) and there is only one green (sap green). I wasn't sure if I needed to buy other greens or blues. Thanks to your mixing suggestions, I'm going to try different combinations of what I have and swatch them out. Two tips were most helpful - one was to consider using colours other than blue and yellow (hadn't thought of Payne's grey, which I have), and the other was how you can get many shades of green just from mixing two colours. Thanks so much!!

Really enjoyed this - you've put things in a slightly different perspective & given great reasons for what your tips. I liked the colour mixing chart of different yellows & greens as my colour chart is a bit less orderly! And also mixing greens on the paper, of course that is what stops a painting looking flat! i shall be doing that from now on :)

Good idea for tutorials! A suggestion for future tutorials, color theory. Explain each of the primary and secondary colors one video at a time. Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. Maybe even variations of black, brown, and white too. With each, explain its place on the wheel, hue, saturation, and what happens as you add adjacent colors on the wheel and complementary colors, making grays, browns, and blacks. Etc. Maybe show the difference in mediums as you mix: Acrylic/oils/pencil, vs. see-through watercolors,. How about light? How white light is all colors, while in paint pigment it's the opposite. I love color! You do a great job and this was a good treatment on green.

So I watched your video a few times and did your green mixes alto I had different yellows I had light hans, and Indian yellow etc....but I had blues and warm gray it was kinda exciting to see the different range of green I could get, do you think you might do another couple of primary color video mixes......I do have your color posters but I do enjoy watching the mixed and it gives me confidence to watch your videos to try to do mixes in the same primary color wheel as you....mikelle New York mom gaining better confidence...🎨👩‍🎨

I recall, many years ago, when I visited England, I was struck by how blue your greenery is compared to ours. Your grass. Your trees. Your shrubbery.
You mentioned previously how your earth is also less red than here in our “exotic” part of the world. 🙂
I wonder if there is something about the light at your latitude that cools off your colours or if we just have a lot more iron in everything here.

I am new to painting with watercolor as I have always struggled using them. I decided about 3 months ago that I was going to put away my acrylics - paint only with watercolor and hopefully get better at using them. I've been painting everyday and I can see some improvement. I am also new to your channel and so far I find your videos to be very educational. This video is one of the best I've seen regarding mixing greens. I always mix my own greens as I don't like the greens available straight from the tube. Your explanation about using other colors that have yellow or blue in them instead of just using your yellows/blues only has me very excited. I am going to go make some green color charts as you suggested. Thank you so much for sharing all of your expert knowledge!
