Out of experimenting I have found that the most ambient warm sounding open C tuning I have discovered for myself was to use 14-60 gauge strings and tuning to CGCGCD at 433Hz/cents! 🤘😎
Great video. I like to change my tuning quite a bit. Open C to play Question of Balance, G for the Stones, D for Stephen Stills and for other fingerpicking songs.
I have just watched this on TH-cam for the first time. This was one of the tunings I experimented with when playing the guitar. I also have used the Drop D, C, G, tuning as well as Open D, D7, A7 & Open G tuning :-).
This tuning was used extensively and to great effect by John Fahey. As far as I can tell he invented the tuning, recording songs with it as early as 1958. If anybody has an example of earlier use I would be interested to know. I played in this tuning almost exclusively for about a year. Anybody wishing to get into this tuning should learn sunflower river blues by Fahey as a rite of passage in my opinion. It was the first song I ever learned in an open tuning and I never turned back. Robbie Basho played open c and it’s many variants with the most versatility, that’s not even up for debate. I just can’t get into the techniques of the contemporary fingerstyle players, very boring. Great tuning for 12 String too. Try CGCGCC.
Wow! Love it!!!!! I have arthritis that's bending my fingers and the pain is unbearible at times so I have been doing a lot of slide stuff, and this tuning is great!!! Thanx so much for posting and I have subscribed to you and look forward to more of your videos. Love the sound of your guitar too!

I first learned about the open C by learning Jimmy Paige's Bron 'y' Aur- and it sounds beautiful and easy to make some of your own songs if you're into playing ambient, pretty sounds. Love doing harmonics on open C
Thank you. You're a great teacher. I think one of the best ways of dealing with alternative tuning is to have--if you can afford it--an extra guitar just for experimentation. That way you have one in standard tuning at all times.
Been following yor channel for quite some time. Your content is always so original and detailed, I've learned a lot from you throughout the years. Thank you and cheers from Brazil.
If you use the 7th string(which is the B below E) from a seven string guitar as your 6th string, then when you tune it to C, you actually are pulling the string up 1/2-step. This will give you a brighter, crisp tone. 5th string goes up a whole step to G. 4th string stays on D. 3rd string stays on G. 2nd String stays on B. 1st string can stay on E, or drop it down to D. using the 5th string as your bass, strum all open strings for a nice fat G chord, then hammer on the 2nd fret of the 4th string with your middle finger and the 1st fret of the 2nd string with your forefinger. This will give you an awesome plagal cadence.
I recorded an intrumental piece in open tunning, 1-5-1-1-5-1. I mixed the Applause guitar signal half natural and half through effects and added dumbek also mixed 50-50. You can hear it searching John St. Pierre Traveling Light CD Song to Arjuna. Drone on! Peace John
You can see this tuning as a different instrument. You can play basslines. You can play chords on the lower three strings. You can play chords on the higher three strings. You can combine it.
Love the chord progression towards the end....it's easy to add a few variations all up and down the neck and get a truly haunting melody. Thank you for this inspiring lesson.
I just wanted to thank you for the very useful lesson. It's great to be able to get good information quickly and you, sir do that well. I'm not unfamiliar with various tunings but I had yet to really check out open C. I have a nice little home studio and am writing a song and I needed to break a huge sounding section down and the key of C major just screamed to be in there. SO I tuned my guitar to open C but didn't know where to go. Thanks for showing me a few quick things. We be rockin' now, baby!
Nice ! A good idea with Open C, is to dedicate a cheap old guitar (like a Stella) to this tuning: the unique sound of this ole piece of wood goes so well with it. Try "Texas Lemon Flavor" (very old Stefan Grossman piece) in open C, with a small guitar, it's a treat...
I got into open tunings a few years ago, i did and open E but i left the A string standard.... Got some pretty cool sounds from that, it became my signature tuning of the band i was in at the time
John Faneuil said C was a great tuning because there was such a wide range from the lowest note to the highest note. Most piano like. I’ve used a long time but you showed me some chords I don’t know. I’ve already started writing a song with what I learned from your video. And I appreciate it very much You have to realize that when you say “harmonize” and intervals“ a lot of us don’t know what you’re talking about Also you said you were going to show us some licks and then you didn’t
I am a lefty. I play bass, but I was always too poor to buy a left handed guitar or bass. So I taught myself to play upside down. Open tunings have made my playing more versatile. Bass I can play in standard. I'm a metal player so I can get away with a lot of crazy techniques normal players can't. The only issue is my band mates often get confused and cant follow by watching. I love open C though.
Is it possible to do a lesson about arpeggios in open c. I am figuring it out myself but it is quite a hard puzzle. I must say open c is easier to understand than standard tuning.
My favorite open tunings are D major and DADGAD...they have a certain, haunting and mesmerizing quality to them. The open C is interesting, also. Very warm and cello-like.
