There are so many contenders, this one is too close to call… Will the brand new Volkswagen Polo GTI snatch it thanks to its launch control? Or perhaps the Mini John Cooper Works with its 2.0-litre engine will be first to the chequered flag? But then you can’t rule out the Ford Fiesta ST, Toyota Yaris GRMN or Peugeot 208 GTI either!

I'd have the Mini. It looks unique, sounds epic and as a few owners have told me, its one of the most fun cars to drive around. And after a little bit of tuning, it's very fast as well.

Cutest drag race ever?
In the United States, a few of those cars have MSRPs well over a Mustang Ecoboost 6-speed Premium, which has a very large trunk and even airconditioned seats. That Mustang would not only out-handle the front heavy FWD cars thanks to being able to balance turning and acceleration traction better, while having wider tires for more lateral grip, and close to a 50/50 weight distribution, with superior aerodynamics, but its 14.1 quarter mile would have been best of the bunch, and best at the roll on test as well. And at 32mpg for the ecoboost Mustang, it is identical to say the GTI. Brits need to recognize that performance oriented FWD vehicles are not necessarily more economical to buy or operate than a proper RWD pony car, and their only real advantage is that their shorter length makes them easier to parallel park. Next time include a V6 Camaro and turbo Mustang in the comparison, and see how attractive that Yaris really is.

the mini is on a class of its own. The Mini S is the correct contender for this group. The JCW should have won both by far.

With the same driver, the Mini would blow everything away here, and it should, as it's the dearest. At least though it's a regular performance model though, unlike the Yaris's limited edition, which is completely impractical for everyday use. And how slow was the Fiesta's driver off the mark?! Great video though.
Really impressed with the Ford ... 1.5l 3 cyl keeping up with 2l and 1.8l 4 cylinders... Best fuel consumption as well... What a bargain...

Shuffler131 a VW with a DSG has a bad reliability but how this Ford Engine performs After a few years or how Long it works the way it should that is something you can‘t predict now...
Shuffler131 there's no evidence to support bad reliability, the fact is ford have made an engine with the same performance as bigger engines is an achievement, in todays world where manufacturers are being hammered on emissions ford have been smart and BTW I have a 1.0 Ecoboost with a stage 1 remap running 165bhp and it's done 68k miles and never had a problem
Matt can you review the 208 GTi? i know it's outdated but in my opinion is so underrated...and would love to see your thoughts on it especially on it's handling

Jon Snow it is in EU but you will see huracan or 488gtb more often than 130/400 cars.... My mom works for Toyota and there is one standing in dealership, man who bought it already wants to sell for 20% more
The reason the Yaris GRMN exists is for Toyota to get better suspension geometry on the Yaris WRC. They don't care if you like the price or not. It is also the reason why it is produced in such small numbers.

I believe the 208 limits boost in 1st and 2nd and only allows full torque in 3rd. Having a 2014 model GTI seems to prove this as a driving experience.
208 is fastest car there. But came last lol . I take type rs in it with a remap on mine

Salatiso Mdeni I know right? The fiesta, golf and mini are so well known all over the world and a freaking yaris comes out of nowhere and delivers this insane performance. Toyota has been becoming sporty lately. First the Camry xse v6 and now this..

Definitely the Mini for me! Took one for a test drive once and if I’m honest wasn’t expecting much but was absolutely thrilled after I’d took it for a spin! Would have snapped it right up if I could’ve afforded it! The sounds that came from it too!!! I also like the message displayed when sport mode is activated! 😃 The whole experience of it put a massive smile on my face! Absolutely without a doubt I’d have the Mini out of this list! If you’ve never driven one and have the chance would totally recommend it!!!👌🏻 Cracking piece of kit!

Agreed. I drove the Fiesta and could have started quicker but Mat is an expert at these things, this was my first time in a CarWow drag race and it took a bit of getting used to, better to be a bit slower off the line than jump the start by being too quick and have to get all the cars lined up to try again. I think if everyone started at the same time the result would have been the same anyway. The Fiesta put in a good show considering how much cheaper it was than the Yaris (£10k ish less!)

Ok for a long time I hadn't been surprised in drag races but the Toyota definitely wowed me.
Usually the way with thefrench hot-hatches. Not the fastest in a drag, but the best handlers on winding B - roads.

That Mini is my love! 😍 I have to admit tho the Yaris get's extra points for being supercharged instead of turbocharged. I'd like it so much more if its physical character wasn't so soul crushingly bland, but that's Toyota for you.
Toyota is not bland. It has one of the richest racing histories ever and have made some of the best cars to ever come into existence.

The Toyota and the Mini have the best exhaust sound imo.
Manakuski I agree, and also have my preferred four cylinder engines. Three cylinder is an odd engine in any car. Unbalanced with noticeable lag between shifts affects turbo and non turbo variants. Unusual non linear power delivery which I find tiresome.

I have a 1.0 aygo as 2nd car and believe me the way this little engine accelerates and goes high in revs i have never seen this before! i always wondered what happened if they added a turbo or supercharger.. and here we are :D

Just for information, max torque is limited in 1 and 2 in the 208 :) and alors till the car has 3000 km, it's limited for protecting the engine ;)

Love the Polo, will think about it when the manual comes out. engine can do almost 300hp/ 400+ NN with software only. Best interior and good space too.

The new Polo GTI 2.0 L EA888gen3 engine has the small IS12 and not the more powerful IS20 from Golf 7 GTI. So you cannot get to 300 hp with that small turbo. You'll need the IS20 or IS38 turbo from Golf GTI / R to get to 300+ hp.

The benchmark 0-60 times might have been interesting to see here.
Also be good to throw in less powerful machines like the suzuki swift sport to see how far behind a car with about 60bhp less from a 1400cc is from these 200bhp plus 2.0 and 1.8cc machines
Do the same race with the new 2018 cars for example bmw m140, Mercedes a45 amg, 308 GTI Peugeot, Audi S3, Ford Focus RS, Seat Leon Cupra 300, Honda Civic Type r, Vw 7 golf r ( Automatik DSG), Hyundai i30N, Renault Megane RS. Would be interesting to know the results.

Patrick Lindsay Granny car..... The Yaris sounds like a real sporty rallycar compared to the synthesized sounds the other cars make. In the Yaris you have to be able to drive by yourself instead of putting the car in "Playstation sport mode", put the automatic gearbox in "D" and just hit the gaspedal.
All these cars are granny cars in there base forms

Each to their own. I'm not a VW fan by any means but the previous gen Polo was really smart. Especially the GTi. This new model seems very awkward looking. I think that low roof line does the damage and also the rear end

Sure yaris an mini are the quickest. But not in the same price range of the others. In holland the fiesta is around 33.000 the mini goed easily above the 50k
