  • The Ford Fiesta ST is undoubtedly the kind of the hot supermini segment, but is there anyone out there who can truly rival it? Well, the 208 GTI by Peugeot Sport may just have the ingredients for a good match - but can it really hold a candle to the sublime Ford?

I want to share my experience, in 2016 I bought the 208 GTi 30th in the same two tone paint that you mentioned here. Bought it as a daily driver. 2020 and still have it as my only car. And i can say it just reminds me why i love driving, every single day...i just love the way it sounds, the way it grips, you throw it on a corner and it just goes, and when you think it can't take more foot on the pedal it kind of tells you: just bring it on!! Haha and it just hangs on, it feels so light, the little steering wheel that invites you to do something fun, everything is so inmediate about it, i mean like his reactions to your commands...it's hard to write it down exactly but to me it just feels so alive and it puts a smile on my face even when im feeling down. Like i have a bond with it know lol. It's not perfect by any means, but that just adds to the charm for me. It has character. Maybe all of this sounds cheesy or hard to believe, maybe you will laugh or disagree but im really not exaggerating, just sharing my personal experience. Would i recommend it? Hell y e s!!

I have a 208gti prestige honestly an underrated car, especially for younger drivers I'm 21 and insurance is only £560. Its also got more power than the fiesta st and is a discreet little car that doesn't pull attention to itself it just looks like a Peugeot. I u understand the whole "uhgh its a Peugeot" and I thought the same until I test drove one. Fun, cheap and economical for a 208hp sub 6.5s to 60mph car would highly recommend.

Me too, I had a JCW for a long time and it was harsh on the road. Brilliant to drive, just like the ST and the PeugeotSport. At some point you think, can't I have both? A zippy drive and ride but with a comfortable edge? The standard GTI THP is that, a fast car with a little refinement, firm without being uncomfortable. I'm probably going to get the wheels sprayed black and add a small red detail but apart from that my only gripe is a slightly indistinct gear change that has a clunky sound.

Chris Baxter - Correction, the first release of the 205GTI was v.v.good, but then they ruined it by removing the brilliant oversteery rear end and precise front end feel. I owned two, one in 1984-87 and one around 1989-1993, and they were like totally different cars. I’ve never driven a FWD car anywhere near as good as the original 205GTI, even if it was relatively underpowered compared to modern hot hatches.

106Gti was a better car if people are honest with themselves, I owned the 205gti 1.9 130hp, 309Gti as well. The 205 is the better looking car as time goes on but that is it. The 106 handles easily as well and is more fun with it, it revs to the fuel cut which is only just past peak HP, it's safer by miles, the dash doesn't rattle and it is faster in a straight line. Of course my opinion goes against the legend of the 205Gti, but I'm telling you straight up, all day every day the 106Gti is the better car, prices are low, get one now and avoid paying mad dollars for a 205Gti as prices are in full blown nostalgia trip time. Peugeot have a weird habit of doing this. I own a 206 Gti 180, and it's the same as the 208 Peugeot Sport in that it's a complete overhaul of the Gti that is almost irrelvant.
It's almost like the Gti comes out, people complain that it's not a great car, then they build a Gti version of the Gti and it's incredible, but because the original isn't spectacularly received, and they're released later in the cycle, they're forgotten about.

Had to do that choice years ago and went with the Fiesta ST.
The 208 BPS was more expensive, have a LSD but you can't switch off the ESP totally, have a better exhaust note, and is too comfy for my taste.
I have more fun with the FiST and I enjoy it every single time I drive it, it has never disapointed me. (35000Km in 2 years).

Me living in Paris... I don't have the "St everywhere" syndrome... Here the Peugeot is a lot more common and the fiesta is very very very rarely seen.
So factoring everything I chose the Fiesta ... I owned it for a year then the super reactive and puppy like driving got a bit tiresome for me.
I finally replaced the fiesta for a Nissan 350z ( more of a GT kind of car)

    • @jorgemarques8944

@Retro CollectedI can't speak for the world salles ... But over here in France the Peugeot 208 GTI being a French car ... And having the 205 GTI as a relative... It outsold the fiesta for a big margin .
In 2016 when I bought my Fiesta thé Peugeot was a moderate success in France.
But nowadays everything changed and the market shined away from the small pocket rocket kind of car.
The used car market is full of this kind of car and nobody is buying. My fiesta stayed on sell where I traded it in for almost 4 months and they had many Clio RS and 208 GTI there as well.
Even the Mégane RS ... They had 5 or 6 of them...

I’ve had my 208 gti for just under 2 years now and it’s brilliant! I had a stage 1 re-map 3 months ago and it’s the best value for money you can get this car. Seeing as it’s the same engine in the 308 GTi the engine is capable of much more as they put it out under powered. My power has gone up to 225bhp (which ain’t much) but the torque has gone from 275nm to 360nm!!! It’s a super pocket rocket on no mods besides a ECU map.

The Prestige was the eventual replacement for the standard GTI, giving you heated front half-leather seats, sat nav and a panoramic roof with ambient lighting. It has the same power as the BPS. The 3-door XY was the next model down - not quite as fast, but more plush and offered some interesting paint colours - but this was replaced by the GT Line (I believe Peugeot dumped the 3-door variant in 2017). No GTI was 5-door.

The main issue I have with the car is that every dickhead wannabe boy racer in their old vtr or whatever see the car and wanna test you. I don't know what it is about this car, it's just a magnet for idiots. Even when I'm driving steady with my girlfriend and her son in the car there'll always be someone get as close as possible before overtaking then cut me up. The next Vauxhall/Opel Corsa coming out next year is very closely based (basically a re skinned version from the videos I’ve seen on you tube) the Peugeot 208 as Peugeot bought Vauxhall/Opel from GM last year.
Peugeot has dropped all the vxr/opc models so it should be interesting to see what hot version of the corsa they bring out hopefully it will be made in Germany I’ve had Renault and Peugeot in the past and the build quality and reliability just isn’t so good as Vauxhall most of which are built at the German Opel factory
I currently own a 2017 corsa e vxr with performance pack which has a drexler limited slip diff as part of this I’m surprised you haven’t road tested or mentioned these in your review thought I’ve seen your review of the vxr d corsa the e version is a very different car and much rarer than the Fiesta St

  • @andylebandy
    @andylebandy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Frankly, I'm still doubtful of the 208's quality. Planned on buying one a few years back and decided not to because the 1.6 THP engine had SO MUCH problems and all the owners on forums were complaining about he build quality. Hoped into a standard 208 for a trip and I was disturbed about how the interior was built :steering wheel hiding the speedo, strange windows opening switches placement and so.
To be checked that may be the problems have been solved like the timing chain. Then it would be a really great car to own.

Somehow, they've taken the Mini JCW engine which sounded mega and was a peach of an engine and in the 208 BPS I drove made it sound like a vacuum cleaner and sucked all the character out of the engine. As good as the 208 BPS is, the mk7 ST is better in almost every way; and the latest mk8 ST Performance pack just spanks the pair of them.
