      Your school should offer "word" for free for students. Ask your main office. I went to a major university and it was free as long as you're a documented student.

    If we export our pages documents to word format, doesn't the formatting get disturbed? I have heard people complaining that formatting done in a pages document gets affected when exported to word format. Kindly clarify a bit.

    Thank you for pointing me to this very helpful video, Gary. Hmmm… the only one I don’t want to do is the paid subscription, so I’ll give this some thought. I use Google docs a lot, so it’s between that and Pages… saving your good advice for reference as always!

      You can actually purchase an 'offline' version of Microsoft Office instead of the Office 365 version. Microsoft makes this really difficult to find, but it is possible. This is actually what I did, as it proved muuuuuch cheaper than the Office 365 subscription-based syste,

    My sister sent me a file of a brochure and form she needed printed out. It was a single page .doc file.
    I first tried Pages because it's supposed to be able to handle Word files. It rendered the page just fine, but the text on the page ran a bit long and spilled onto a second page for just the last line.
    I also tried Nisus Writer Pro and got the very same results.
    LibreOffice rendered the page perfectly all on one page so it is now my go-to for any Word documents I come across.
    I will not pay for a subscription to software (well, except for Backblaze).

    Excellent. Always worked with Pages, but kept MS Office for MAC when people would send Word docs to edit and return. However, with Catalina, lost Office 32-bit. No prob. Been using Pages to edit, save as docs, and send back - plus Numbers to open and edit Xls sheets. Perfect. One thing, use iWork apps, not web-based Pages.

    I have a word document I am using on mac... I have word on mac but there is an embedded PDF and it won't open I get an error message that says the server is not found the company says I really need to be on a PC bc mac changes the formats. • @macmost
      @macmost  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It sounds like that document has something unusual about it. Maybe the PDF was embedded in an odd way. Have you tried opening it in Pages? Or TextEdit? You wouldn't get that PDF inside it, for sure, but you could at least see the rest of the text. Seems like that company that sent you the document really needs to get their act together and not send out documents with such restrictive requirements.

    Apple makes Pages and MS-Excel with multiple tabs for open multiple documents in one window like Safari or Firefox tabs; however, MS-Word does not have this thing for Mac. Why?

    • @macmost

      @@honey4xi That wouldn't be true. Many third-party developers use tabs in their apps. Apple encourages it. Apple doesn't restrict what Word can do like that. It is up to Microsoft, not Apple.

    Gary - just got a 15 inch, 2011 refurbished Mac Book Pro that has upgrade from Lion to High Sierra. It tests out excellent...but NO word processing. I have been using WORD on my old computer and have hundreds of Word files which I must use to complete a writing project. QUESTION: WILL the WORD ap work on this refurbished computer which is running High Sierra. If I purchase an old 2011 Word, I do not think I can still get the upgrade. If I purchase a 2017 version of Mac I'm told it may not work with High Sierra. PLEASE can you advise me. I read that Microsoft will no longer support Word for Mac. I don't want to send back this refurbished computer as it checks out fantastic. But I can't complete my project unless I can use my Word Files. Thank You for any help you can lend on what to do. Word is an app from Microsoft. It has never been "free" or anything like that. They do let you open docs for viewing without subscribing or buying, which is nice. You can also open Word docs in Pages (which is free) and TextEdit, but not all features are the same.
      If you feel you want to buy Word, Microsoft has options for subscriptions and for one-time purchase (which you will eventually need to update since it doesn't include updates).

    Good tips, but I was hoping to learn a simple thing: On a Macbook, in a Word doc, what keyboard shortcut will take me to the top of the page. None of the tips offered by a Google search (i.e. fn left arrow key) work.

    • @macmost
      @macmost  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you look in Word's keyboard settings, there is a listing for the start of a document with Command+Home as the shortcut. So if you have a Home key then Command+Home will do it. Without a Home key, use FN+Left Arrow. So Command+FN+Left Arrow seems to work. But you can also customize it there in the Customize Keyboard controls in Word to whatever you want.

    Good morning Gary. Thanks for this excellent tutorial. I am both an author using MS Word for this work and a videographer using FCPX for preparing my videos. Afraid of my Word documents not being opened in the newer updates of MacOS, I have remained stuck with Mojave till now. I guess it's time for me to embrace Pages and upgrade to Big Sur. When I am in Big Sur, will the old Word documents be opened by Pages? Can you please guide me in this matter?

    • @macmost
      @macmost  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why wouldn't you be able to open your Word documents in Big Sur? And why only go to Big Sur when Monterey has been out for 7 months? Pages will open Word documents, but the two apps have different features. Why not try to open them in Pages right now to see it in action?

    • @paatamaata8888
      @paatamaata8888 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@macmost I am so glad that you have 'cared' to reply. Reports of FCPX's instability in Monterey makes me think that going for Big Sur would be a safer option. I have a new M1 MacBook Air running on Big Sur and I was able to open and save my old Word documents in Pages. However, whereas the Word document was only 200 Kbs, the saved Pages document had an increase of size of nearly 4 times the Word document! The Pages document is of 865 Kbs. From a like question raised in Apple forums, I have learnt that Office 2021 is a one time purchase that works in the latest MacOS.

    Try to get word you'll either end up with a subscription on the stand alone $149 with three years of support Microsoft is definitely heading in the wrong direction with their insistence on the cloud and subscriptions. You can only win with Google Docs which is feeble at best or a third party suite which is antiquated and awkward. The free version brings you back to the cloud again where most people are not comfortable it can be great for collaboration but also very dangerous.

      @@macmost No... it's a general issue and all over the net. No solution found on sites or stack overflow. My frustration comes from being forced into this office suite by the enterprise and then the Mac support in particular is poor. Web is even worse.

      @@leifashley So support isn't able to offer any solution at all? I just tried it and File, Save and File Save As both worked without an issue. I wonder if it is related to whether you use Microsoft OneDrive or not (I don't).

      @@macmost yes, it works for a while. And this will stop working. It might be one drive, but if so, it’s a Microsoft product and when MS sells this junk, this is a bundle they always do.
