Inside America's First Video Game Addiction Rehab (HBO)

  • Inside a spacious home in the suburbs of Seattle, a group of young men are going through a technology detox.
They’re recovering gaming addicts, sent here from across the country for treatment at reSTART, an inpatient rehab for people whose lives have been destroyed by video games.
Earlier this year, the World Health Organization added “gaming disorder” to its International Classification of Diseases. That’s a long-awaited nod from the medical community that Hilarie Cash, founder and chief clinical officer of reSTART, has been hoping for since she opened reSTART nine years ago.
“People tend to think it can't be real, but they are misled,” Cash told VICE News. “Because if you're a gaming addict and you're actively gaming your brain is going to light up the same way someone who's high on cocaine, the same way their brain lights up.”
But despite its new recognition by the WHO, there’s no scientific consensus as to whether gaming addiction is a real disorder, and some academics are pushing back on the WHO’s classification, saying there needs to be further research.
Treatment at reSTART isn’t cheap. The first phase of the program, which includes no contact with the outside world and daily therapy sessions, usually lasts two months and costs $30,000. After that, recovering gaming addicts live in halfway houses - apartments leased by reSTART - with their fellow patients. The second phase costs $7,000 a month. In just about every case, the rehab is paid for by the patient's parents. Patients in the program are typically in their early twenties, but some are as old as 30.
“I mean I may be almost 30 years old but I’ve never actually functioned as a true adult,” Kevin, a patient at reSTART, told VICE News. “Paying my own bills, go to things on time, go make my own food. Things like that. Those are all things that I've never fully accomplished.”
At reSTART, patients learn how to use technology responsibly - and how to function without it. Cash says there’s currently a waiting list to get into the program.
VICE News met with some gaming addicts and the clinicians who treat them as they try to participate in an open world, free of gaming.

It functions like most rehab centers. It costs a lot of money and it's an overall scam with people who often have no qualifications to handle problems of addiction. It's the same scheme with drug addicts and alcoholics. The game addiction is real though since most online games revolve around basic skinner's box principles.

Good point.... except backpacking has to be a voluntary thing. These kids are being sent to rehab by their parents. They are there involuntarily. If it was a voluntary thing, many would leave and go back to gaming, just as they would as soon as they realized the backpacking trip isn't as enjoyable as video games.

I was unfortunately in the adolescent reSTART program and it was a complete joke. After several months I started acting up by refusing to do activities and was accused by Hillary Cash of, "Being the rotten apple spoiling the rest of the group".
I got sent to WinGate wilderness because I was fed up with the way they ran their program and sort of tried to jump out of a car during a parent visit. And wilderness was one of the best things that has ever happened to me, those 2 months in the Grand Staircase absolutely changed my life. So yes, wilderness did so much more for me than any residential ever could

Gaming addiction is a real thing, I'm saying that as someone used to play Dota for 20 hours a day 140 hours a week. But I think gaming addiction is a special kind of addiction that it's rarely a root cause of a problem. Gaming addiction, unlike other addictions, is really easy to give up, and it's usually just a sympton of a much deeper psychological problem, kinda like alchohol addiction. To me, the root cause of my problem is my parents fighting and divorce.

I was an addict before I realized how fun actual adventures are. I played first person shooters like Battlefield 2142 and MMOs like Vanguard, Lotro and Aion. I can't believe how you can slowly get absorbed in the style of thinking it helps create until you feel like anything else is pale in comparison to it. What helped me get off more and more was discovering wild edibles, Bushcraft, wild medicine like Yarrow, and we moved as well and the woods was closer. I now enjoy archery quite a bit. My son is really into games and I just hope he doesn't fall into the trap I found myself in. He is showing signs of it. Just pulling yourself away from the games for awhile helps alleviate some of the grasp that addiction can have. So you can play a bit less without the 'need' to play.

@dantelo88 True, but also everyone has the choice in the end, no matter how limited I make his computer time, to game or not to game. These kids can only get help with their addiction by choosing to allow the help. Otherwise, you just go back to what you were doing. I have a schedule for my son. I just hope he listens to what I try to teach him for his future.

All I'm hearing is how many hours they have spent. You can game for a few hours, and walk away it's called discipline. If they can't fix their own food, wash their clothes, do chores, then that falls on them and their parents, not gaming.

There needs to be some sort of screening to ensure that the clients do actually have an addiction and it isn't someone's parents trying to get them to stop doing something because the parents dislike it.

I don't know how I feel about this. In my early teens I was very "addicted" to video games but the more I think about it I feel like it was the sense of being a part of a community then being addicted to a specific game. My parents were drug addicts and I didn't have many friends so the internet became my only way of socializing. I'm almost 19 now and have tried to get back into gaming but I don't enjoy it like I used to and I'm assuming that's because I'm playing alone. I'm sure everyone situation is different but I wouldn't compare the addiction to drugs like the guy did in the end. I have experience with that kind of addiction as well. You can quit playing video games and go back to playing casually which just isn't the case for most drug addicts. If the use again, just once they'll fall back into their addiction.

There was a time where I used video games to escape far too much and would've considered it a bad habit, not an addiction, but a very poor habit.
Basically from the age of 12 to 18 I played video games for a minimum of 2 hours a day, but in reality it was more like I'd squeeze in every moment possible to play video games from the moment I got home from school til I feel asleep, with watching some youtube in between to take a short break.
However, as I got further into my teen years, I started playing less and less. I was getting burnt out on games. Especially multiplayer games, which were the most addictive. I realized I was getting angry more than I was having fun in competitive online games. So I slowly just stopped playing all together.
Now I primarily play singleplayer games like Skyrim, platformers, etc...
I still play Battlefield, but that's because its a casual shooter.
I spend less than a couple hours gaming each day now, and sometimes I can go for 2 weeks without even thinking about booting up a game.

video game rehab facilitys look like gay conversion camps, because its does a hit and run by people who outright hate videogames and treat it as an honor to "treat" them like addicts like a catholic likes to treat gay people.
Gaming disorder: is no disorder, it can be an addiction but the criteria for gaming addiction tends to so vauge, its to the point where even just a minute of videogames destroy a human being.
Just look at people who are addicted to there jobs. People just like to work. Much like how gamers like to have fun.
TL:DR: addictions are addictions and should be treated the same as any other addiction, and just because someone has a job addiction; doesn't mean they need to quit there job.
Edit: also, you would be surprised with how our current world is adapting to technology to the point of dependency; even to the point where the only way to find a job is thought online applications
and the only way to really play with people is online. even if it does demand a different reward system. changing of the reward system isn't new, like stone age vs. our current age. where one demands to be a good hunter or gather and the other requires you to look for systematic jobs.

Gaming addiction is symptomatic, just like any addiction. It baffles me that she assumes these addicts "come from good, nice middle class homes" when so many aspects of addiction are linked to disconnect and social dysfunction.
Gaming addicts don't game because the games are too addictive. They game because something else is wrong in their lives and they're using games to cope and feel successful.
I played wow endlessly you escape high school bullying. And once I finally wasnt stuck in high school anymore? I quit. Easily. Because my life wasnt a toxic nightmare. Unless rehab centers address the underlying cause of the addiction they're not going to solve anything. Gaming is not the disease, its the symptom.

I know a lot of you guys are saying that paying $30,000 a year is highway robbery, and I honestly agree. However, if it was a lower price and you or your parents thought you were addicted to something (not just video games, possibly drugs, gambling, etc.), wouldn't you try to fix that? A decent chunk of America really tries to avoid getting psychological help from professionals, and instead just kind of wear their mental disabilities on their sleeves. If anything, I applaud these guys for admitting that they were addicted to gaming, and it's probably because they had/have addictive personalities. Now, just going to rehab might be the start of fixing their problems with addiction, or it could be the end of it, but the fact that they've done anything about it at all is awesome to me.
A lot of games nowadays are starting to implement currency systems that take advantage of the brain's dopamine systems, and while this mindset has simmered down since November with the EA Star Wars Battlefront II fiasco (kotaku.com/a-guide-to-the-endless-confusing-star-wars-battlefront-1820623069), companies are still trying to take your money just as much as they were before. A huge example of this would be Take-Two Interactive/Rockstar and GTA V's use of microtransactions. They've made billions of dollars from GTA V alone, and roughly 42% of that comes from microtransactions (www.ign.com/articles/2018/04/09/gta-5-has-made-more-money-than-any-film-book-or-game-says-analyst). While I'm a huge gamer, and I usually tend to stray towards the "video games aren't a bad thing" side, this is a legitimate concern for some people, especially those with addictive personalities.

This is not "trivializing substance addiction". This is expanding science's knowledge and understanding of the human mind and all of its nuances and potentials. Are you an addict? Have you experienced what it's like to be in an addicted brain? If you have, then shame on you for judging another addict. You need to go through your 12 step program again. Have you not? Then shame on you for assuming, judging, and adding your two cents to something you don't and can't possibly understand with your armchair psychology degree.

The South Koreans know more about this problem than anybody. Anyone in the U.S who runs this type of program should look to them for guidance. Our insurance companies won't even recognize it as a disorder? - Hell in South Korea, they have centers run by actual medical doctors where people can even get TMS treatments, for Gods sake! Vice did another show about that. They are so far ahead of any other country on this issue.
