  • This is a video to compare the SteelSeries Arcits 9 ( • SteelSeries Arctis 9 r... ) with the Astro A50 ( • Astro A50 Gen 4 (2019)... ). These are two fantastic headsets, both fairly premium, both with different connection options. They're both surprisingly good - the Astro A50s are more comfortable but the Arctis 9 has Bluetooth!

Highlights of this headset for me include:

    Comfortable fit
    Decent microphone
    Good sound whatever you're doing
Good looks and versatile enough to use as headphones
    Fantastic features for the price.
    Lowlights:
Earcups might be a tad small for some
Having to plug into charge makes it less convenient than the Arctis Pro Wireless
Specs of the Arctis 9 include:

I bought the Astro A50 in 2019. As my first premium gaming headset, I’m extremely happy with them. I bought the mod kit later as well. I prefer the feel and seal of the mod kit. I plan to keep them around for as long as they last...or if they somehow get outdated.
Thanks for the reviews and comparisons!

@@TheProvokedPrawn I've got the generation one and I've had them for years. The Halo edition. Yeah I had to get an HDMI audio ripper to get them working on my Series X. But they're so hard wearing they still look brand new. That's why I'm here to see if I need an upgrade. I do think the downside of the Astros is having to use a chat cable on the controller. Great video by the way, Prawn. I've subscribed.

I had astros for 2 years and then switched to arctis. I was skeptical about it, but the 7 made me fall in love with it. Then after years of using it I recently upgraded to the Pro wireless and I was SUPER DISAPPOINTED. The quality on PC was completely shit, every EQ was bad, couldn't use the game to voice mixer because setting the game sound as my default device made the audio sound extremely muffled and was terrible for any game I played. I switched back to Astros with the a50 gen 4 and damn I'm sad I left arctis after 5 years, but super happy with the quality. Not sure how the pro and a50 sound on console, but a50 blew my mind when I got it right out the box.

Its a small thing, but thankyou for talking about replacement headband and earcups. I had astro A40 older gen and bought steel series pro because of reviews. I was highly disspointed even when i switched from a40. MT a40 gen 2 tr mixup was so much more comfortable, harder and the sound wasnt all that of an upgrade. The material is uncomparable to astro. Astro imo is just next level. Its like lamborghini of headsets. Yeah it might be a bit overpriced, but it def delivers everything you need.
So i returned the steel series and bought astro a50 gen 4 now without reviews. surprize surprize it delivered. top quality and premium. also the frequency difference betwwen steel and astro is not all that impressive. One of the reasons ive gone for steelseries because i thought 40000 hz would deliver better sound than 20000 by alot. Well on practical use this means nothing i guess. They sound very similar, hardly could tell a difference.

The Astro A50 has a good mic that will break on you if you use it. I have went through 3 Astro A50 headsets in 1.5 years and the mic was the issue each time. The first one was covered by warranty and the second wasn't because they said it was dropped. The mic is flimsy and the internals for the mic is poorly soldered in. The sound is great if you want a headset that doesn't have a mic.

I know lots of people say the Astro is super comfy but imo the earcups are the most comfy of all headsets. They are that good. On the contrary the top of the headset feels really bad on top of my head. It feels as like something is digging in my head. The headset is also very heavy bc of the metal used on the sides and being wireless with the battery built in also makes it super heavy.
The Steelseries wins it for me, has bluetooth, does not weigh a ton like the A50, and the top of your head does not feel like is being crushed. I have both headsets, and the A50 is packed and in very good condition. Haven’t used it in over a year already.

Owned the arctis 9x for about a year. I've had connectivity issues since it came out the box. Sometimes it's fine and other times the audio kicking in and out is so bad I can't play. I've seen where it's allegedly interference if you're close to a high powered router, but it's a terrible issue that's widespread and they should fix it. And SteelSeries customer service is awful. They made me destroy my old headset to abide by their warranty when it didn't work anyway and they wanted a dozen pictures and video proof of them being destroyed. Thinking of switching to the A50, but they seem so bulky. I have a series X xbox now and the arctis 9x is still having the same problem. After owning/using both the pro wireless and A50s (on Xbox one) and pc, I’m gonna have to give it to the A50s. Pro wireless feels cheap compared. That’s not all of course but a $330 headset shouldn’t feel like it’s made of the same plastic they use for dollar store toys

  • @davidc1961utube
    @davidc1961utube 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I was deciding between these two items and picked the Arctis in June. The headset broke at the swivel where the earpiece meets the headband. The return process with Arctis was ridiculously complicated and time consuming, and they were out of stock for weeks.
The replacement unit has all of the performance issues that gave me buyers remorse with the first unit.
The micro USB slot is really tight right out of the box. If you are running low on battery and plug in a cable, it shuts off to charge.
Connectivity on Bluetooth and Xbox is spotty. Xbox is OK if BT is off, but is finicky when BT is on. Turning on the headset BT also turns on the Xbox, so if you want to turn on BT just for music, you need to turn on the headset, turn on BT and then use the button on the front of your Xbox or your controller to turn off the Xbox.
Both of these headsets use the master volume and mix wheels design, which is inherrently awkward. Turning the chat down requires that the mix be adjusted towards game, and then the master turned down, because adjusting the mix towards game makes the game louder as well as making the chat quieter. There shouls be a game volume wheel and a chat volume wheel, operating independantly of each other. I can hear myself talking thru the headset, but that is weak and not adjustable. Much worse than the Turtle Beach 420x headset these are to replace.
Because the heavy steel band is elevated from my head, looking down makes the headset rotate forward, almost slipping off my head. Listening to music while doing dishes for instance, is a bad idea.
Great sound, solid 16+ hour battery life and retractable mic are the positives, but I really wish I had chosen the Astros.

The 9X’s picked my voice up quite nicely and didn’t leave me worrying about weather or not I was inadvertently yelling in the mic. I have terrible issues with my Gen 3 A50s turning off randomly every few minutes. Do you have the same issues with the Gen 4? Also I read that the Astro A50 does NOT work with the new series x or ps5 and is awaiting for a patch.

I don’t mind the none Bluetooth connection if the A50s as they are primarily a gaming headset and Bluetooth increases audio lag which they are trying to minimize.

  • @Dbeastlygamer95

I have bluetooth with the Astro A50, not natively with the headset though. I got a $20 bluetooth receiver on amazon and I plug the usb charging cable into the base station to keep it running, and then the 3.5mm headphone jack coming from the receiver goes into the 3.5mm jack in the base station. So it's like a little dongle hanging off the base station but it does work well. Idk if it is the quality of the receiver I chose but I do hear a very faint noise when my phone is connected but not playing anything.

SteelSeries have really taken a dump on quality. The amount of issues over at r/steelseries along with the absolute lack of care for owners is absolutely appalling. Not to mention the build quality of the Arctis series has a known issue with the joints where if you use it very much and aren't walking on eggshells when you use it, it will break on you.

Steelseries durability is not great. As someone that loves my Arctis pro wireless for 3 or 4 years now. My Bluetooth went out and now recently the joint that connects the headband to the ear cup has broken. It now has me looking at the A50.
That being said an argument can be made about the 3 to 4 years of use being worth it. Still sad about it though 😕
