So nice to see rational, mostly knowledgeable, EV opinions about the state of the industry. (Tesla run rate currently 2M/year) As a western Canadian: way to go AVRO! I can't afford a $60K or $40K car but a Canadian based EV would make me proud.
The conversation with John Voelcker was the best part. John V’s understanding of battery production and electric utilities is absolutely top-notch. C&D editors do tend to know their stuff, but it is surprising to me how well this editor knows these industries that are new to Car & Driver’s world.
we had a similar show car in australia over 30yrs ago. Nothing big ever came of it. Suppliers showcasing their skills i guess. Car manufactures all gone from this part of the woods. After the tesla phenomenon, i have serious long term doubts about many of the suppliers. Mind you that doesnt preclude them from being bought out by OEMs for specific skills.
46:37 The Cybertruck was unveiled in Nov 2019 with a then expected production date of "late 2021". So at this point, it's just over a year behind schedule. But, as you might have noticed, tooling is indeed happening at full speed in Austin. So expect them to hit their production start of summer time.
Prototypes are easy, production is hard. He's calling this car Canadian, but what he really means is Ontario's Secret EV Project. There is no content in this project from anyone west of Winnipeg. Still good to see.
43:13 Model 3 dates back to mid 2017. And they've made significant changes not only "under the hood" (more than software), but to the interior as well. The only exterior changes were wheels and chrome delete. So yes, exterior is largely the same.
If without Government subsidies, how do they plan to compete in scale against established, much larger auto manufactures? If this whole exercise is just to say it's Canadian made, are they not a bit too late?
John needs to add a 3rd option at @47:00 - people who always wanted a pickup truck but wouldn't buy one because they were too hick and rural and they polluted too much and were too expensive to own. The CT will change all that. It's not the same as a gas powered pickup truck.
Great segment! I've been scratching my head for a long time on this topic. Between Ontario and Quebec. We have the mineral resources, the technical know how, skilled work force, a once thriving manufacturing sector which just needs a jump start and for the icing on the cake an abundance of hydro electricity to power them. What are our governments waiting for ?...let's get those shovels in the ground and those manufacturing wheels turning already.
Why are you looking to the government at this time? Design a compelling car then go the governments for tax concessions. Convince investors and build the plant. Start production.
Put me on the reservation list, Made in Canada EV, I want. Make sure you adopt NACS plug in system , to be able to charge at Tesla Supercharger when they open up👍
I am a Canadian and I remember the Avro Arrow flying over what is now Mississauga. All Canadians were proud of that plane and we knew that the decision to scrap the plane was based on prevailing politics Enough said. I want to say that the cybertruck basically provides form following function. Just like the VW beetle which was laughed at at the time for it’s unconventional design, it fulfilled a need for inexpensive basic transportation. When compared to the real and proposed legacy auto trucks in terms of efficiency, load carrying, towing ability, comfort(air suspension) the superior supercharger capability, dent and rust resistance, and low maintenance cost the Cybertruck will be the choice of plumbers, electricians as well as municipal governments etc. Tesla will sell a ****house full of them.
Every year we get a new iPhone with the latest and greatest developments. The Arrow may be a great test bed to apply the latest and greatest developments coming from the hundreds of parts manufacturers in Canada
Read Andrew Carnegie's autobiography. He states, repeatedly, that the way he became one of the richest people in the world 150 years ago by being the lowest cost steel provider, which will always mean his company survives during downturns and thrives during good times. Drive down costs and put everyone else out of business or struggling to compete. That is Tesla today.
Tesla has worked with other auto makers, they provided the drivetrain for the Toyota 2nd gen RAV4EV, and the drivetrain for the first Smart EV as well. Tesla might be willing to join this joint venture, and even build a manufacturing plant in Canada for production. Tesla has expertise in all areas of EV production, they could fill in any areas that might currently be lacking.
The Avro Arrow, great interceptor. Would have been a mach 2.5 fighter if they had installed the Iroquois engine. Even the 1.9 mach with a placeholder engine was awesome.
Ford's deal with CATL is a smart move to get a technology transfer for market leading technology for the largest battery manufacturer and the pioneer in cell-to-pack , LFP and hybrid LFP-Sodium technology.
Arrow? That name has a lot of history in the history of Canadian-derived technology. The Avro Arrow turned out to be a white elephant, hopefully this project doesn't end up with a similar fate.
On the use of Magnesium, doesn't it burn like a Match? That doesn't seem like a good combination with batteries that are already prone to start a fire.
Are you guys retired, you seem out of touch with what is happening. Tesla has four built and paid for auto plants and a battery plant at production level. Now that they are not battery constrained they have ramped power wall, mega packs, started production of semi truck and are finishing production line for pickup to start production about June. As a side business they have forty thousand charging stations and have ramped production and installation to hundreds per month.
I am not convinced by Eleap, charging a battery fast currently has as adverse affect, hence manufacturers have a charging curve. PV roof is a waste of money.
Good 1 AUTOLINE ! Canadian automaker needs a good name ! Naming after a cancelled project it's not a good look. Probably anything that sounds too much like Chevy Aveo it's not great, also Plymouth Arrow, Pierce-Arrow. Call it Molson's, get a sponsorship. 5 seat please.
Dear JESUS God Almighty THANK YOU !!! i am so sick and tired of Canadians who say "WE CAN'T DO IT" because whatever,... Please just STFU and let the Canadians That CAN DO it get on with making Canada A WORLD LEADER,......
Too bad GM owns rights yo "Arcadia"--perfect name. FCA could have avoided Stellantis with a deal like this using the platform and technology across the line up for organic growth. In 2023 EV is no longer a mechanical mystery like in early Fisker Karma days
It’s a cute idea but manufacturing is complicated. Nothing complicated is getting done under an embarrassment like trudeau. At most it will be an excuse to fund liberal connected companies and consultants. If it is as successful as the Bricklin it will be a miracle.
Tesla will be dealing with the fleet sales issue with the semi. Expect that to be solved. I think the toughness and general longevity of the cyberTruck over modern aluminum bodied electric pickups is going to be huge. Add the appeal to the people in the rust belt who junk cars years ahead of the rest of the country. When Tesla lowers the price of the CyberTruck and produce lower trim levels it will go though the roof. I expect them to milk it for a while. In the end these trucks will be prized like the old VW cars. Only we will not be chasing rust. Huge aftermarket. Start with wraps to provide color. Suspension upgrades. Interiors. It will be huge. Could be wrong but this is how I see it. As for being late Tesla was battery constrained. This held back the Semi and CyberTruck. The delay enabled Tesla to go with the 9000 ton GigaPress and developments which will make CyberTruck a better product. I don't get the people who criticize Tesla for being late. Tesla is simply prioritizing what it has available to maximize production.
Mr . McElory ,Take this comment with a tongue in cheek perspective !! I am a 65 year old "Tesla Fanboy" who has followed Tesla for 6 years and was lucky enough to buy their stock at that time . I think you "old farts" and John, who is a really an older fart (haha)!! are so far off the mark with your delusional opinions and quasi facts about TESLA , that this presentation will not age well !! As Sandy would say , " can you say "mega disruption of the entire OEM universe" boys and girls !!? Always enjoy your show John. Greetings from Canada!! GIDDYUP!!
Sorry, *Mr. Volpe,* but it looks like its father was a *Chevy Bolt.* You could have bought an hour of *Franz von Holzhausen's* time and ended up with something much sleeker, much more aerodynamic, and more *salable.*
Tesla is not concerned about EV competition. Why do you think that they have opened up all their patents to "competitors". They are also in the process of opening their reliable and extensive charging network to all of their "competitors". These actions show that Tesla is actually trying to assist these so called "competitors". Herbert Diess former CEO of Volkswagen was given a tour of the Tesla factory without restrictions. Do you know of any other major company that would allow their competitors to use their patents and tour their factory. Tesla considers it's only competitors to be ICE vehicles. They only adjust their prices according to demand and not to harm the other EV manufacturers. If delivery times become too long they will increase their prices or lower them if demand slows down. Tesla will continue to ramp up their production and will sell every vehicle they manufacture even if they have to sell at, or below cost. They will do everything they can to meet their average 50% rate of increase in vehicles delivered per year. They have a well laid strategy to deliver 20 Million vehicles by 2030 and it is very probable that they will meet this target.
So nice to see rational, mostly knowledgeable, EV opinions about the state of the industry. (Tesla run rate currently 2M/year)
As a western Canadian: way to go AVRO! I can't afford a $60K or $40K car but a Canadian based EV would make me proud.
I really liked both the guests for different reasons. Lots of really really good information.
Agree
Enjoyed John V’s insight. Great guest, please have him on again.
Yes! He is really good. Low-key, knows his material, very likable guy
The conversation with John Voelcker was the best part. John V’s understanding of battery production and electric utilities is absolutely top-notch. C&D editors do tend to know their stuff, but it is surprising to me how well this editor knows these industries that are new to Car & Driver’s world.
Great reporting. I love how AN has embraced the EV movement.
John Voelcker was excellent. Very factual and knowledgeable. 👍🏻
I enjoyed the show and Flavio’s passion. I hope someone brings the Canadian car to market.
we had a similar show car in australia over 30yrs ago.
I would bet there’s a great chance that this car has a future. Flavio Volpe is the right guy for this project.

Late 2021. Yep. Late 2023 is my guess now. I just hope Tesla hits a lot of the specs they promised.
John Volker. Now that is a guest who knows his stuff.
You got that right, I learned a lot
Prototypes are easy, production is hard.

Woohoo John Voelcker!! He’s amazing…
President of the American Eye Blinking Association
Gary, John , good show. It is time to look down the tunnel and hope to see what is coming and where it could go.
If without Government subsidies, how do they plan to compete in scale against established, much larger auto manufactures? If this whole exercise is just to say it's Canadian made, are they not a bit too late?
Great show guys

Informative post, good to see.

Nice to see Canadian content! That car did catch my eye

Go Canada!! A great program… thanks!
Every year we get a new iPhone with the latest and greatest developments. The Arrow may be a great test bed to apply the latest and greatest developments coming from the hundreds of parts manufacturers in Canada
Good that they were looking at the practicalities of range and charging in todays living environment.
John Voelcker was so excited about the Aero he was speechless.
Always thumbs up here from me

Lower cost by firing workers and cutting the pay an increasing hours for the ones left. No overtime either. That's Carnegies way
Great show.
Designing cars is easy, producing cars is hard.

would be even more fun if Tesla would go bankrupt.
driving is life .
Go Canada!
The Avro Arrow, great interceptor. Would have been a mach 2.5 fighter if they had installed the Iroquois engine. Even the 1.9 mach with a placeholder engine was awesome.
Maybe a continental interceptor was not needed. You noticed it was never replaced. Missile technology made that concept obsolete decades ago.
Interesting concept but what is the plan to put it all together?
Ford's deal with CATL is a smart move to get a technology transfer for market leading technology for the largest battery manufacturer and the pioneer in cell-to-pack , LFP and hybrid LFP-Sodium technology.
Arrow? That name has a lot of history in the history of Canadian-derived technology. The Avro Arrow turned out to be a white elephant, hopefully this project doesn't end up with a similar fate.
Interesting to hear how the banking industry talks about Canada.
48:02 maybe more accurate to call it brutalist (as in brutalism in architecture) than dystopian.
On the use of Magnesium, doesn't it burn like a Match? That doesn't seem like a good combination with batteries that are already prone to start a fire.
Sounds like you need a Lawrence Stroll (Aston Martin/F1) or the Stronachs (Magna) to champion this
53:10 GM’s “lead” lol 😂.
What about a two speed gearbox to increase range??
Are you guys retired, you seem out of touch with what is happening. Tesla has four built and paid for auto plants and a battery plant at production level. Now that they are not battery constrained they have ramped power wall, mega packs, started production of semi truck and are finishing production line for pickup to start production about June. 57:38 It took them 5 years to get to full speed largely because until the Model 3, it didn't need to run at full speed.
Patriotic vs Logic ah yes old friend, we meet again to do battle.
I am not convinced by Eleap, charging a battery fast currently has as adverse affect, hence manufacturers have a charging curve. PV roof is a waste of money.
How about the management shakeups at Toyota and Honda, how much of this is EV related.
Solar roof is important in Canada! Really, getting less than 50% solar efficiency in Canada makes sense for who?
None had experience selling cars when horses were in.
GM sold Lyriqs, they can't deliver them. It's crazy.
Dear JESUS God Almighty THANK YOU !!!
i am so sick and tired of Canadians who say "WE CAN'T DO IT" because whatever,...
Please just STFU and let the Canadians That CAN DO it get on with making Canada
A WORLD LEADER,......
2wd or 4wd?
Wouldn’t it be poetic if Canada builds the worlds best EV, beating Tesla in every metric including price…then the project gets cancelled?
yeswery good hapy now canaadatesla
John - Please explain to me why is Corvette coming out with an SUV? Another "does not make sense" from GM.
Should license all base tech from Tesla
I predict Tesla will open a plant in Quebec soon.
The Bolt is only producing 120k per year. That's nothing
Damn i feel bad for the other John to have to sit through that Flavio guy 😂
Too bad GM owns rights yo "Arcadia"--perfect name. FCA could have avoided Stellantis with a deal like this using the platform and technology across the line up for organic growth. In 2023 EV is no longer a mechanical mystery like in early Fisker Karma days

Magnesium is flammable and it warps...ask BMW.
Tesla will be dealing with the fleet sales issue with the semi. Expect that to be solved.

Send the kids to their bedroom, it's after hours

Canadians are all talk and little else. That car ain't gonna happen..
It all stars with talk… set an objective, discuss how to achieve it.. and implement. The proof is “in the pudding”. Let’s see how it evolves.
Prototypes are easy
The forgien auto makers are not communists spending money on nukes pointed at the USA. Do you have any reason we should try to feed our enemies?
The vehicle is nice but dosen’t really introduce anything new.
The Cybertruck is starting to smell like the Tucker - all hype, no deliveries.
My estro? Mice-throw.
