  • Welcome to Revolutionary Motion! In today's video, we talk about why you should not have a loose grip in tennis during your forehands and backhands. Learn to tighten your grip for more control without losing power in the process. Happy playing,
    Kata and Clemens

    As an advanced player myself, this is a tricky topic.
    As you mentioned top players learn how to keep their arm and wrist loose while;
    I would suggest, their grip is towards a medium, to medium-low pressure.
    This is actually why you even see slow-motion footage of Federer hitting
    (a forehand for example sake) when he hits lower/higher in the hoop,
    his racquet "does twist" at the 3 and 9 position.
    The racquet specs "will" play a small part of that (head-light, thinner beam)
    But, a firmer grip as I feel you are encouraging would not produce that outcome,
    producing a stiffer racquet face.

      Thanks for the feedback! :) We believe that there needs to be a differentiation between pros and amateurs. The wrist will never be stronger than an efficient kinetic chain that works with upper body rotation. Thus, the wrist will remain flexible enough even if we hold on to the racket firmly. The better of a player we become the more efficient we will be at using the perfect amount of strength in our grip but for the start, it will be much easier to keep control over the ball with a firmer grip. Hope, this helps to explain our position ;)

    The thing is, and just in my opinion 70% of the players use the wrong grip size (usually way too small) - “because Rafa”
    With small grip, the player will death grip the racquet causing wrist hand elbow issues and still, not being able to properly manage off center shots (for the reasons you mentioned)

      Agreed on the grip size issue... It also does not help that most players want to hit as hard as the pros but don't do any supporting gym workouts to make the arm and wrist (Obviously also the rest of the body) strong enough to withstand all the force that can be produced if the kinetic chain works efficiently. Thus, arm and wrist injuries are way more common amongst amateurs than they should be unfortunately :(

      Valid point. Unfortunately, most people won't be able to ever hit as many balls in their life as Federer has and most people are also not blessed with nearly as much talent and feel as Federer is so sometimes what the pros do is not necessarily what amateurs should do. Hope this explains our position a bit better :)
