Big help! “If you know Black 23 at the spot, you’ll know black 23 at the table”. Love it! Refereeing my second game tomorrow and this was a big help again!

Nice one Greg. I was told by folks in my group that I was doing the "look back". I started doing the color / number during the initial whistle.

Man alive. I'm nervous. 1st varsity game this Thursday!. Of course it's arguably the best conference to officiate in. I hope I do well. It's the conference all refs aspire to reff in if trying to move up. Here we go!. Thank you for your hard work.

I've been told to slow down many times. I like the idea of calling the color and number at the spot of the foul.

Good Evening Greg, do you have a video on when and how long you should blow your whistle (other than when you are calling a violation or foul).

Hi Troy. I do not. That would be a good topic. Thanks.

New official here! Are there trainings before games, or do you learn as you go once you ref your first game. I just got cleared today after passing my required exams. However, I do not have the signals and rules down. Hoping to gain some great knowledge with your videos. Thanks for sharing.

Congratulations! In regards to signals, don't be afraid to use your voice and your whistle which is an extension of your voice. Your voice is extension of the whistle your whistle and extension of The Voice. Focus on clear communication. The other stuff will come.

Thanks for the quick reply! And that is such great advice. I would have probably been shy and quiet. Now I will be sure to speak my commands even if I forget the signals. Saying the other stuff will come makes me feel a little at ease because I was nervous I would forget things once play begins @@BetterOfficials

I haven't done basketball yet but last year football my biggest issue was being too fast. I assume the game slows down with experience in basketball the same way it eventually does in football?

Yes. Spot of the foul/ violation focus is a super effective way to slow oneself down.

Yesterday, I was looking back as I moved to the table to ensure I knew the number of the player that fouled. The coach said I was staring down the player, which I was not, only to confirm the player number as I walked away. Better, through watching this video, to call the foul and not move to the table until I have "imprinted" the player's number in my mind (and color).
