    Excellent video. One of the best how to's on YT.

    Great video, I think I'll hire this one out. One guy quoted me 1100 bucks for this job and now I'm thinking that he's being pretty reasonable.
    Thanks again. This video gives me the option to tackle the job myself and gives me the education to not get ripped off by a shop.

    This is a pain in the ass. I just swap another same differential on my truck and is back in the road again. Sometimes swaping a differential from junk yard is cheaper. Good video 👍

      Unless it's another junk differential that wasn't taken care of.

    Did the new pinion throw everything off. This is the first time I’ve seen things not go back together using the factory shims and working.

    I'm just replacing the seal in a 95 8.8. The new flange and dust cover have a small space between the seal about 3 mm gap. I have some play in the flange. Could this small amount of gap cause abut .5" play and the truck drag when shifting like it I slow going into gear once clutch is let off. The parts fell out in my hand so I had no original anything to go by. I need some help lol. Tried more and less torque on the pinion nut. Runs smooth for a few hours then drags. Maybe I ruined rhe crush sleeve. I used a ratchet not a gun.

    What size original pinion?

  • @okhotrodder
    @okhotrodder 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The newer 8.8s are super 8.8's. The bearings are larger, and the crush sleeve is taller and much harder to collapse. Not just a good impact is needed. A lot of muscle. You'll get irritated and tired changing the bearings on a super 8.8 with electronic locker.

      Could be a growling or humming noise coming from rear differential area, pinion seal leaking, driveline vibrations.

    Wouldn't it be easier and cleaner to install the pinion flange after the pinion seal, slinger, outer pinion bearing and race and then insert the pinion bearing through the pinion flange so you don't have to hammer at everything?
    You really need to verify preload correctly so mentioning the best way to do it without actually doing it and showing it isn't good enough.
    No U-Joint check? No pinion depth check? No cleaning of rust from the flange yoke and pinion flange before reinstalling the driveshaft? No grease in the slip yoke to prevent bump and knocking?

    Once I get my pinion out, could I just take it to an auto mechanic and have them remove it and install a new one?

    Being that this video was 4 years ago You should of stopped at the point where the inner race was exposed and you could of explained of the damaged - what would cause this damage - and possibly what the sound would be at that point in time. As with most of your video's they are good but like this one but explaining what the result and what might have caused it in the first place, The reason I say this is that repairs of this kind are very time consuming and expensive in repair shop for labor.
